  1. On the M13, if you hit the tap button once, it restarts the pattern for those effects (well for the Pattern Trem, at least. I don't remember if it does for the Seeker, too. I think it probably does.), so I don't know they brought that behavior over to the HD or not.

I'm guessing you already have the MIDI out/thru jack set to thru on page 6 of the setup menu?

Yep, I have the PODs set to midi through. Whacky thing is one POD won't work when daisy chained to Axe output either. Though that Axe sends along midi in to a second Axe with no problems. Weird.

It looks like the sixy will send a tap command every measure. If I put a sixy in line before each POD that should theoretically solve my issues. I realize that trying to sync 2 PODS, 2 Axes, Adrenalinn III, Mobius, Big Sky and Echolution 2 all at once will never work. . . lol. As long as I can beat sync two or more devices at once for some interesting combinations, this expensive experiment will be worth it!

  2. Well, all that Sixy device is doing is taking the MIDI clock signal from whatever source you're using (I assume one of Axe FX's) and converting it so it spits out the correct CC (#64 if I remember correctly). So, there's no reason it shouldn't work. But, the HD Pros should respond to MIDI clock. Are you saying they won't at all? I've never really used MIDI clock with a POD, but I've used it with the M13 and gotten it to work.

I do wonder how often that Molten Voltage device is sending the CC, though. I would think that if it sent it continuously, it would mess with the way effects sound. Perhaps it just sends it when it receives a change in tempo on the MIDI clock signal. I bring that up because even if two devices are synced, they will still drift over time. It's probably not a big deal if we're just talking about delays and modulations, but if you get into more complicated things that go out for several measure, I could see running into issues.

From what I understand the Sixy sends repeated tap tempo CCs in sync with the clock coming in. I think the issue is that each POD "start" command is not at the same time. The patch is a whacky combo of seeker and pattern trem. It seems both play the sequence correctly if I just use one or the other, but if they are both on that patch they are not in sync. On the two axes with somewhat similar patches they maintained sync at least for the minute or so I tried it.

I also had zero luck getting the second pod to respond to PC commands when connected to midi through of first POD. Had to run a cable direct from midi solutions T8. Whacky.

  3. In my rrack from hell monster rig, I have tow POD HD Pros, one X one normal. Two Axe FX XL and a bunch of other cool stuff. Starting out programming this I loaded same presets into both PODS and same presets into both Axes. I have a few patches that are beat synced type stuff. Playing patches where the synced stuff is on both Axes, all seems to be in sync. Patches that use the PODs for the synced FX never seem to sync up?

I am using RJM Mastermind GT midi controller set to master and PODs and Axes all hooked up to midi which is split with midi solutions T8.

I see a box called sixy from molten voltage which apparently fixes the weakness in Line 6 midi clock sync. Has anyone even tried synicng two line 6 devices let alone get it to work?

  4. Currently have 3.5 xplants. Tele, les paul, explorer, all flame tops, double bound in pearloid with duncan custom shop pearloid p rails.

The above mentioned refinished body with warmoth neck counts as .5.

Monday should be picking up purple metallic firebird, with tele neck, tele, strat and firebird pickups.

Really want to build a purple flame warmoth starcaster with pearloid and bigsby.

  5. That would be a good guess. Lol. I had a LPB 69, but bought a black body only off of ebay. Had the black one refinished metallic purple, and put on a warmoth strat neck.

So I have LPB body and neck, plus pickups and guard. Just need bridge and pots.

Just ordered a bridge off of ebay. If it works, i may sell that guitar for 350-400.

I have a sunburst 69 that will be gutted and either put in a flying V with TV Jones pickups, tele neck and bigsby, or a billy bo body with lap steel conversion neck.

Hmmm, i have old variax guts laying around. Maybe I can cram them into the 69. . .lol

  6. There are some real pieces of work on ideascale. I think it would be hard to foresee a feature request I would vote down unless it changed the way the JTVs work now. Anything that is an option is good in my eyes, whether I use it or not.

I really dig the ability to use volume and tone pots to control POD parameters via midi CC I assume. I asked for the ability to assign the volume and tone to CCs on external devices. Same as we can with expression pedals and any of the FS1-FS8 buttons. Using tone pot to dial up or down drive in Axe Fx amp blocks would be killer. Or feedback on Echolution 2, or speed on leslie on Mobius etc etc etc.

I am pretty sure that got more down votes than up.

WTF,  for anyone that doesn't need that or even a clue of what I was talking about, cool, but it would not cause any negative issues on JTV and any uninterested would not even know how to do it, so I fail to see what the downside was.

  7. Uhh - I'll resist the urge....  Responsively A) because when engaging a model (which do seem to be more "in the park" tonally) I'd then have to roll it back up to avoid them being muddy, and B) I prefer my instruments to default to the desired tonality.

If this were a standard passive guitar (or even an active type like my Steiny) I wouldn't be asking this - I'd have already modded the electronics to my desired effect.  But there is effectively a computer inside this thing - so I'm asking questions before grabbin' the knife.  If it's possible to achieve the desired goal without spending money on p/u's I'd give it a go.....

edit - that smiley shoulda been a "B )" - this board does seem to have a mind of it's lollipoppin' own....

If need be, you can lock the tone pot for the modeled sounds. That way if you roll off tone or volume on magnetics side, the modes are not effected. Not saying that is the solution for your issue, but just in case.

  8. Okay, I had a chance to play with this a little and it works the way I would want it which is this: Let's say I save a high gain patch with Lester-1 selected (Lester with Bridge Pickup Selected). I then save a clean sounding patch with the Spank-3 selected. Now when I select my high gain patch on the HD500X, the Lester-1 patch is automatically selected for me. (regardless of the guitar's current model or toggle position.) While on that patch, I can use the toggle to go between Lester pickups. When I then switch to the clean sound, Spank-3 is selected and the toggle now changes between Spank pickups.

This is how I prefer it, but your opinion may vary.

For this to work, make sure that in HD Edit, in the Mixer section, look for the Variax Section. Make sure Local Control is "Unlocked", Variax Control is set to "Preset" and that the Model is the Model you want as the default guitar model for the patch. Then make sure you send the patch to the HD500X. You also have to be using a VDI cable.

It can be a little confusing when switching between patches, because the guitar may not always have it's toggle in the position you are hearing. I quick flip up or down and then back on the toggle fixes that.

This works well when your POD patch plays well with all of the models assigned to one toggle bank, but for example, if you have a 12 string, then an acoustic, then a lead tone set up on your toggle, they all run through the same POD patch.

Killer! I was the one asking for this since way back. Adds another killer option to the JTV!

  9. Was considering the idea of a 7 string JTV transplant ast night and realized something -

We all know there is currently no way to do the modeling over 7 strings, BUT why would I want to?

I don't need a 7 string simulated acoustic 12 string (14 string?), or a 7 string banjo, or a 7 string Strat, or a 7 string 59 Les Paul etc. All of those instruments are fine and accurate to the original as 6 strings (5 strings for the banjo).

The only time I ever need a 7 or 8 string is when i am doing heavy or Djenty bits and even if I could make the JTV modeling work on 7 or 8 strings it will mostly sound like poo anyway due to the JTV's inherent palm mute issues.

So my idea is to transplant my JTV 89 electronics into a nice 7 or 8 string Ibanez or similar, using a 7 or 8 string bridge with 6 Graphtech piezo saddles connected to the modeling inputs and the guitars magnetic pickups running through the JTV mag input.

This will give me the ultimate Djent-Djent-Djent on the heavy strings and with the touch of a footswitch the standard JTV modeling on the 1-6 strings and muted 7th and 8th string.

Line 6 or Toasterdude, feel free to take this idea and run with it  :)  I might do it and I might not, depends on how I feel about things when I get around to pursuing the idea.

Looks like cool idea but I have enough problems with 6. Strings!

  10. Higher gain piezos does not mean more crosstalk. It means hotter signal, yes but if you reduce the gain, the crosstalk is reduced also. Crosstalk is much more a function of the mechanical design. (I do this for a living too but for Hard Disk Drives) I have used piezo elements for measuring acceleration disturbances. I would feel comfortable modifying the input gain stage if I had to. I would first put a scope on the analog signals going into the A/D and see what they look like when I strum hard. If they are clipping there or exceeding the input parameters for the A/D, then the gain is too high and there is no way adjusting the string volume in Workbench will fix that. I have no idea how much headroom Line 6 designed into this circuit. That is always a Signal / Noise and resolution tradeoff.

On the graphtec site they have verbage about their piezos compressing so as not to produce clipping. I will have to investigate to see if that is only with ghost system in addition to piezos.

  11. Tell me a bout it! ;)

I'm willing to share more Variax circuit tips  - but I want to avoid getting in hot water with Line6 / Yamaha  - but physics and electronics is my day gig and most of the circuits for A/D>D/A and piezo preamps are already out there  - just a google image search away.

Wait a second. You know all this cool info on the JTVs. . . .AND . . . have a variax with bigsby? damn. . . .

  12. Well I got my problem sorted out.  The fix was a bit of a duh moment, and I'm almost embarrassed that it took me as long as it did to figure out how to correct it.

What I had to do is change the global string volume settings from the edit menu.  I searched the forums and heard people talking about how this acts as a type of pre gain.  Lowering it by 5-6db did the trick.

I didn't even know that setting was there.  I don't use workbench all that much, probably because I can't connect through my HD500 and have get out a separate interface, and just never noticed that setting in the edit menu.

I had been adjusting the the string volume on the patch, but that didn't do anything to help the problem.

As to why the signal was so hot and clipping I couldn't say.  My JTV-59 never had that issue.

So all is well again thankfully!

Hmmm in another thread someone asked about tapping off the ghost system and if a buffer was required. Maybe the fact that the models seem 6db hot, would allow just tapping off and the possible signal loss could be handled by lowering by less than 5-6db in worbench?

    Above is a JTV-69

Actually each Piezo saddle signal feeds a fixed gain op amp that feeds an AKM5386 Stereo A/D There are three U2,U3,U5 - to cover all 6 strings.

    http://www.akm.com/akm/en/file/datasheet/AK5386VT.pdf

There is no "adjustable Gain" block in the AKM5386

The Variax String Gain is accomplished post A/D inside the Freescale DSPB56725F DSP

(trivia : The Mag PUs use a separate AK4556 Stereo CODEC (U6) - (for A/D for the VDI interface) and D/A for the 1/4" out

You seem to know quite a bit about JTV guts. I have a whacky question for you, if you know the answer. Lets say I was building a guitar and didn't want model selector and alt tune knobs on it. If the knobs are physically not there, can I still select model and tuning via VDI?

  14. 7??? 8??? 9???

    Why so many!?!?!?

    Well:

    tele xplant

    les paul x plant

    explorer x plant

69 with refinish and warmoth neck

firebird xplant coming in 2-4 weeks

billy bo lapsteel xplant next in the pipeline

another 59 that may go into a warmoth flying V, warmoth LP Special body I already have or maybe I get a warmoth starcaster for this one.

I also have a 69 main board I got off ebay. Would love it if I could just use that for the billy bo lap steel, so I would have another 69 ready for a project.

  15. The widest, whackiest 12 string I ever heard ;-) Basically normal tuned strings panned one side and the octave or "nashville" tuned strings to the other.

JTV magnetic pickups panned hard to one side and set to p rails middle position rails setting.

JTV modeled "nashville tuned tele with mini hum neck pickup panned hard to the other side.

Two clean fender amps, 20 ms delay on the nashville tuned side plus an enhancer on the Axe II.

Stereo track, then just mags, then just modeled nashville, then stereo again.

PLaying is sloppier and crappier than usual. Didn't think that possible!

  16. I am away from home for a month once again. I go home for 2 days and leave for 3 weeks. Once I get more than two days down time I will order one and have it installed on my LP transplant. If it works and improves the guitar I will buy more and install on all my transplants. The great news with that is the old bridges can go back on the donor bodies. I still have all the original pickups so all I need are pots and a plastic cover to convert the variax output to standard 1/4 inch and I will have 4 decent LP type guitars.

What I will do with them I have no idea. . . . .. lol. Maybe hold onto them so if in a few years gen 3 variax comes out, I stick the gen 2 parts back in these suckers to sell em, and then buy 7 gen 3 guitars to update transplants? lol Doubtful.
