  1. I was reading on the Fractal forums that they have some special High Def versions of some of their amp models but they run into the DSP limit when using them with certain intensive effects. Hmmm, sounds familiar... My understanding of the way these DSP chips work in the PODHD is there is no compromise of quality depending on DSP load. It either works or says DSP limit reached. I would think it's the same way for Fractal or Kemper or anyone else.
  2. You may get an extra effect in your signal chain that you may not have been able to do before. It's not much of an increase in power.
  3. It's anyone's guess at this point. I personally don't see anything new coming out for a few years but it depends on what the competition does. Which right now I don't see anything in the price point of PODHDs that's any better and I don't see that changing anytime soon. As far as upgrading to the Pro X from the HD500, I guess there's some I/O stuff you really need that makes it worth it for you. I'm sure you're aware that they will sound the same otherwise. Maybe you can get an extra effect in your signal chain that you can't get now. I haven't seen where the newer DSP is that much of an increase.
  4. To ext1jdh, Line6 has a dev kit for pedals. Maybe if enough people like what you did then Line6 would put it into the next update. http://line6.com/tcddk/
  5. Over 20 years ago I bought a Roland GP-8, which is much simpler than the PODHD, and it took me more than an hour. I spent about 5 hours getting the PODHD in the ball park and probably another 20 hours getting it just right. But that's not a lot more than other devices I've worked with over the years, and they were no where near as flexible as the PODHD.
  6. I use the PODHD with the Amp Pre models and cab/mic simulation into a power amp and cab. But that doesn't mean it's the best way for you. Some experimentation is required. Your second question: I'd suggest making a seperate preset with cab and mic sim turned on. It's easier and if you do forget to turn them on you can quickly switch to the differant preset.
  7. Tried Thump and Decay instead of Low Freq Cutoff and couldn't tell where Thump and Decay were doing anything and it was way too bassy. Maybe it's more pronounced with differant amps, mics and cabs. I'm using the Angel Pre with the 4x12 XXL cab and 4038 ribbon mic. Oh well, I'm real happy with what I have with the LF Cutoff at 140hz and Resonance at 40%. Those two things really helped me dial in the tone I was looking for. Always happy to hear and try suggestions though.
  8. To gckelloch, I'll try your suggestions with Thump and Decay versus Low Frequency Cutoff. You never know what may work better when you move few knobs. Thanks...
  9. Two of the DEP controls I use the most is Low Freq Cutoff and Resonance. The first one if obvious and I usually set it to around 140hz. Resonance seems to be more of a High Frequency adjustment. It combined with Presence seems to really help me dial in a tone.
  10. I just looked it up and it said the Spider 3 has a CD/MP3 input. Connect your PODHD there and that's about the best your going to get out of that amp.
  11. I run my PODHD through the Effects return of a pair or Marshall JCM900s when I play live. Sure it'll color the tone some, but it'll be close enough for a monitor and won't sound like crap.
  12. Not good. Yep it'll sound bad. You may be able to help it by turning down your pre-amp or channel volume on the amp but it won't sound like what you get through the PA.
  13. If your guitar amp has an Effects Return, you can plug the PODHD into that. That bypasses the preamp of your guitar amp and just uses the power amp section. Basically giving you a full range amp. I do this all the time.
  14. What is your output setting ? Is it Studio Direct ?
  15. Connect the PODHD using Studio Direct as your output setting into the FX Return of your amp. However, your may want to consider using the 4 Cable Method on the 5150 amp you have. That's a nice amp and is worth trying. I have a PODHD Desktop and bought a used FBV pedal on eBay and saved a few dollars. It connects via Ethernet. With the HDPro you can also use a midi pedal. I wish I had bought the Pro and used my existing midi pedal - just because I already had one, not that it's better. For me the HD500 wasn't an option. I don't like having my electronics on the floor and it was too many cables running all over the place.
  16. I prefer a tube power amp but I'm mostly into high gain stuff. The tubes just give it that in-your-face-punch that I've never been able to get from solid state. FX Loop is a requirement if you get a standard guitar amp. Either way, it still sounds good. It comes down to what best fits your needs and wallet. Maybe a better way to phrase your question about amps is: I have X amount of money, I play these types of songs, I play live in small/medium/large venues, what's some amps that may fit my needs and why ?
  17. Do you have the PODHD set to Studio/Direct for the output ?
  18. That's exactly what I do too but I didn't know how he had his PODHD setup. I set low cut to 140 and reduce Resonance to 40% when using ANGEL Pre through 4x12 XXL cab and 4038 ribbon mic. Then I have it going studio direct into the effect return of a Marshall amp into a 4x12 cab.
  19. Are you using Cab modeling in the PODHD ? Are you using the Pre or Full amp modeling ? Are you running Studio Direct into the Effects return of your amp ? Need a little more info before making a suggestion.
  20. What I do is create a Default tone/patch that has all the things I always use into a location such as 5A. Then anytime I create a new tone/patch I copy my Default into the new location and finish tweaking whatever differances I need into it.
  21. Yep they're in the cab block. That's something that can work for you and against you at the same time. Atleast for me I found the 4x12 XXL V-30 and 4038 Ribbon Mic worked for me once I tamed it with Low Cut, Resonance, and a little Presence. Not recommending you change what you have by any means. There's so many ways to setup the PODHD and depending on your guitar, pickups, amps, speakers, etc., whatever way works is the right way. I think that's why people get frustrated sometimes. There's soooo many ways to configure, setup, route, and tweak everything that it can be a little overwhelming. I guess that's the trade off for versatility.
  22. Sounds like we both do the exact same thing. Except I use Marshall amps and cabs. A couple tricks I picked up is the Resonance, Low Cut, and Presence can really help with the final polishing of the tone. Atleast for me, they made a significant differance in getting the tone just the way I wanted. I usually had a problem with too much low frequencies and getting the mids to come through clearly without having that biting treble that hurts. Those three knobs made a big differance. It's been a looooong road but, I think, I might, maybe, possibly, not sure, almost be 100% happy with my tone. There I said it...
  23. Nope, it either has to be a midi pedal or one of the Line6 pedals. Used Line6 pedals can also be found on eBay just make sure they come with the cable. I bought one that way and the guy selling it to me tried to stiff me out of the $20 cable. There's differant Line6 pedals available. I'm sure someone here can explain the differances. If you decide to get a generic midi pedal board, double check that it'll work and how much of a hassle it might be versus how much you save. I bought a used one for $10 and used it for years when I had my POD Bean 2.0. Then when I bought the PODHD Desktop they dropped midi support - damnit.
  24. Hehe good luck with that. That's like asking someone to trade you their Ferrari for your Honda Civic and Toyota Camry.

    Opinions...

Duncann, I have to give you a lot of credit for putting yourself out there and asking for critisicm then taking it for the way it was meant - which is only to be helpful. That's not an easy thing to do.
