    I respond to this so often that I'm beginning to annoy myself.  It's all about axis !!!!  The helix cabs do not provide any ability to change the axis/mic position other than distance.  If you happen to like the sound of the helix cabs, it's probably because you like whatever axis (my guess is just off center, or maybe multi-mic).   This is a common spot that live sound guys use, so it's a familiar sound.   Easy to love it.   If however, you like the sound of certain cabs with the mic near the middle or edge of the cone...  or a combination of axis' and mics then really the only way to get there is with 3rd party IR's.     It's really that simple.  They all sound great.  But do they sound "right" for you?

    You do realize that I (OP) posted my question nearly 3 years ago?

    But thanks anyway.

  2. I believe this Yogi quote applies to the OP.

    "You’ve got to be very careful if you don’t know where you are going, because you might not get there."

    I just think it's sad that no one here seems to be able to reproduce Yogi's tone.  Sure, you can quote him but...

  3. The auto-volume echo isn't as usable/pad-like as it was on the Echo Pro, or the DL4. I never could recreate the same sound on an M-series pedal with identical settings, or even with generous tweaking. My conclusion was that they must've changed the algorithm, and the 2.50 legacy version appears to be the M-series version...

    With respect, I disagree.  I loved the auto-volume echo on the DL4 and the M-series.  I've been waiting for a year and a half for it to appear on the Helix.

    And I'm real happy with the results.  It works exactly as I want it to.  I haven't even messed with the settings.

    I haven't even really explored the rest of 2.5 - I'm transfixed by the auto-volume echo.

  4. With honest respect, I disagree:

    > Tuner works fine.

    No it doesn't. Checkmate!

    Hmmm...I'm guessing you've never been on a debate team:

    Them:  The Earth revolves around the sun.

    You:  No it doesn't.  Checkmate.

    <wink>

  5. As suggested above and on the forum about wireless... use a magnetic micro USB cable. Any significant pressure and the magnetic link disconnects meaning no damage to the receiver.

    Thanks for the reply.  I've tried those magnetic connectors - they're flaky.  Some work, some don't at all.

    But we shouldn't have to resort to "solutions".  If you look inside the receiver (G10), you'll see that the connection was designed and installed by a chimpanzee with very small hands.

  6. I'm on my third G10.

    It's a great unit EXCEPT if your bass player has a drunken girlfriend.  Mine does.

    The connection between the receiver and the USB/power connector is terrible.  All it takes is one bass player's drunken girlfriend to step on it and it's toast.

    So now I have tons of tape and foam around the connection and I scream at her (and others) anytime they get within a 5 foot radius of the unit.

    If Line 6 would redesign the receiver with a professionally-executed connection, the G10 would be perfect.

  7. That's Jerry Garcia playing pedal steel on "Teach Your Children".  Sublime.

    It would be easier to achieve a pedal steel sound on the Helix if the "volume swell" worked as well as it does on, for example, the Line 6 DL-4.  But it doesn't.  Not for me, anyway.

  8. I bet my house. I bet my car. I bet everything.

    Great news!  I've exactly replicated that tone using my Helix and a guitar!!!

    Thing is, I don't trust you not to steal it.

    Accordingly, please send me your mailing address (no P.O. Box).  I will mail you a NON-DISCLOSURE agreement.  Please sign it, have your signature notarized and mail it back to me.  Upon receipt, I will send you the audio file.

    You will be amazed and will finally be able to put your quest to rest.

    Thanks, but I don't want your car or your house.

  9. I tried really hard to not click this thread....When we bought the thing, I don't think there was a quantifiable / guaranteed update feature of  "XX amps and XX effects every quarter until the product is discontinued". I've got to think most of us have really only scratched the surface of what it can do as-is. Especially if you are gigging. I've had one since it basically came out and one of the earliest if not the release firmware. Its stable, dynamic, and versatile. Those that are needy for an update, did the unit not satisfy when you got it? If not, why'd you keep it? Or are you just bored? Which is OK-Its not a judgement, I'm just curious.

    Like any computer, part of the excitement of the Helix is its expandability, its future possibilities and capabilities.  It's not like buying an echo pedal or something that will be the same in 2 years as it is today.

    Wanting firmware upgrades is the opposite of being bored - I love what my Helix does today and I'm eager to see what else these people can come up with.

  10. I can. It's hard to claim self defense after you've thrown the first punch...plus, the relentless obsession is just plain weird.

    But either way I'm out, because I guarantee he's getting off on this back and forth too...because even if we're not talking directly to him, it's still ABOUT him.

    Not to be rude, oh no, oh no, but you said that in the previous thread.  Please don't drop out - I enjoy your snark.

    In the absence of a firmware upgrade, I find this to be the most fun thread on this board.  It's fascinating to me how some people (the Doofus OP, in this case) have no pride and no shame and are willing to make total lollipops of themselves in public.

    Then we have his defenders, like "45-year old", who earnestly attempt to address OP's non-existent point.

    Then we have anarchists like me who just enjoy textbook examples of fallacious logic and poor behavior.

    Please don't stop.  I don't want to read another thread about the tuner.

  11. Hey everyone, Line6Will here.  I'm the CS rep who was dealing with gbakerjr.  We really like transparency here, so I'm going to jump in on this.  Everything OP said is true, and I already let him know I slipped up.  There was a stock issue and it forced a delay.  The issue was I didn't let him know about the delay, his accommodation replacement just shipped out much later than expected, my bad on that one.  The timing of the weekend made it all worse.  When the Helix came out we really had to step up our support, and we started doing things we normally wouldn't do. Unfortunately the quality of support didn't match the product.

    Wow!  You guys are great.  Well done.

  12. Yikes.

    The OP has a perfectly valid complaint - L6 made a commitment; they didn't follow through.  It's simple.

    You just don't DO that in business.  It doesn't matter whether he needed the Helix for a gig or because it completes the room.

    No way I could live without my Helix for 6 days - how about you?

    Maybe he should own a second Helix, just in case.  But that's wholly irrelevant.  L6 made a promise; they broke it.

    To add insult to (albeit mild) injury, the mob here - ordinarily an exceedingly pleasant bunch - jumped down his throat.

    If I were Joe Yamaha, that customer service guy at L6 would be having a very bad day.

  13. I'm continually surprised at people joining a forum who start spouting without getting a read on the vibe of the joint.  When I join a new online community, I'll read a buttload of threads before making my first post. Keeps me from asking stupid questions or pissing in anyone's Cheerios.

    Buttload?

    Ewwww.

    Surely, you meant "boatload"?

  14. Not pointing at anyone in particular, because it isn't anyone in particular, or this thread in particular, but it seems like the overall tone around here has gotten more confrontational and abrasive lately, don't know why. Much of the net is like that, but this forum really wasn't, with fairly rare exceptions. Liked that better, personally.

    It's not more confrontational and abrasive.

    Just more granular.

  15. not sure what the problem is here but this is my "Swell advice"

    using the adriatic swell, set the following:

    Time =0

    Feedback = 0

    Noise = 0

    BBD size = 8192

    Mix = 0

    Rate = 0

    Depth = 0

    Level = 0dB

    Headroom  = 0dB

    Which leaves you with a standard 2 knob swell effect...I use about -65 for threshold and about 2.5 seconds for attack.

    This didn't work for me at all, alas.  Different pickups, different output, different touch on the strings, who knows?

    At any rate, we're inquiring about the AUTO-SWELL.

  16. Well, I was one of the people who gave feedback on the new Auto-Swell during beta, and they did refine it based on those sorts of comments. I don't thinks it's nearly as unusable as people are making it out to be. It just takes some patience when setting it. The old auto swell on the POD wasn't perfect, either. These things can be tricky, because it's a balance of having it be responsive so it swells when you want to and doesn't trigger when you don't want it (which happened sometimes pretty easily with the earlier Line 6 auto swell).

    I mean, there will always be things to correct in the firmware - that happens. I think it if people want changes in the effect they should send Line 6 examples of what they're looking for. I sent them A/B samples comparing the new effect to the Autoswell on my Strymon Möbius, for example. I was actually able to get them pretty close (actually thought the Helix was a bit smoother in some respects).

    Phil...

    Would you please post some settings for the auto swell that you've had success with?

    I understand that different guitars, picking techniques and all will make a big difference.

    But there are so many variables that even a patient person - which I'm decidedly not - will have trouble dialing it in.

    Thanks!

  17. Do you have all your streaming software turned off?  Itunes, youtube, daw, etc?

    Andreluis: you're right about hubs for firmware updates.  I use one for all other Helix interactions though.
