  1. Are you using the full amp models or the amp "pre" models?

If it is the full, try the "pre" versions in stead since your combo amp is providing the power amp model and the real speaker...

And when using the pre versions you still can select a cab on the amp page, it doesn't give you the same effect as the full amp with a cab which can be kind of dull when playing through a real power amp and guitar speaker/cab but it does give a bit of an EQ curve to the output to give the sound a touch of the flavor of whichever cab you selected.

So, for example, A Blackface 'Lux Vib "pre" will sound a bit more like the Fender it is modeled after if you also select the 1x12 Blackface 'Lux cab.

And instead of using the loop output try using the regular output and in the set up menu select Combo Power Amp as the output setting (on page 4/10 of the set up menu).

And the most powerful tone shaping tool that is often overlooked: EQ! Put a studio eq just after the amp block and dial in a touch what ever frequency (or dial out) that might be too weak (or too strong)...experiment a bit and you will find you can really bring some life into it.

  2. Don't be surprised no-one says anything.... these guys seem to think the launch codes are in their "sauce" or something..... just know that it makes guitar noises, cause that's all you're getting out L6.

I know having them divulge all the details would be helpful to those of you who can make good use of the data/science that they could provide....but...I also have empathy for the company that knows too well that releasing the recipe will help only a relative few but spawn a whole feces storm of deeper confusion and mostly undeserved bad press for them from the multitudes who won't understand what they read but still use it to "prove L6 sucks"....

Not releasing only stirs up a small storm from the few....

  3. You can have two completely separate paths all the way through the device. One can be a Variax on VDI cable. You can have an acoustic guitar plugged into the HD500 at the same time and you can have presets designed to keep one path or the other from producing any output...ie muted.

You have to choose what output settings you want the PodHD to use and the one choice applies to both paths. So if you want to send your Variax guitar through the Pod for effects and amp modeling and on to the house PA you would be best served by using the Studio Direct output setting. This would also be best for an acoustic guitar running through the PodHD and on to the house PA.

If, however you want to send the Variax through the Pod and then out to a guitar amp then either the Variax or the acoustic guitar will have to be sent through an output setting that isn't optimal for the amplification system you have chosen since the setting choice is global and that applies to both paths.

You also have to be careful where you put stereo and mono effects in either signal path because the paths are both stereo....two parallel stereo paths that can be summed by mono blocks....and stereo effects can span both paths depending on where you put them...

The routing of the paths is very flexible so for the most part you can keep things apart and still have effects for both instruments.

There is also an effects loop with 1/4" jacks that you can assign to anywhere in the signal chain that you can use as an output for either path so you can, for example, send the acoustic off to its channel in the house mix after it passes through some effects blocks but before it even runs through the mixer block in the PodHD signal chain...

I know this is the way the HD 500 x works, not sure about the previous model but my best guess is that is the way it works as well.

  4. Using a single amp pre in the presets. L6 link to DT25. Pan to center or each path hard left/right?

Obviously center increases the output volume but which is 'better', as in 'optimal' for the end result?

Panned either way I can use channel volume to get the overall output the way I want it and also to balance output levels between presets.

I avoid moving the Mixer Levels off of 0.0 db...is that 'best'?

So, are there any consequences to getting the over all volume you like with the panning centered vs. panned l/r?

I have been trying to keep my PodHD master at least at 12 o'Clock and the Master on the DT above 1 o'Clock for normal use. I'll back both of those down a little for 'quiet' practice...or else just the PodHD Master....not sure which is 'better' there either.

So many options, I'm trying to nail down my methodology so I can clean up my set lists and end up with 'the list' of presets.

  5.

    ...

I built my own IOS inteface to control both my DT amp and HD500 but only POD HD500 reacts to MIDI messages when both devices are in use...

    very cool.

does your midi designer app allow you to control the DT by itself and have presets that include the outside parameters like drive volume, bass, middle, treble, etc. etc.?

So I could switch between my favorite presets just like when I'm paired with the HD 500 (minus the effects obviously)?

Or does the current position of the actual knobs on the DT potentially interfere with those settings, as they are in the 'preset', from being called up when loading the 'preset'?

  6. You haven't been missing anything! The two signal paths are the same as two stereo tracks in a real world mixer or a DAW with unity gain at Zero. If both are centered and each is outputting zero decibels, there will be clipping. ...

I keep my Pod HD 500x mixer block set panned center and set at 0. Does this mean all my presets are clipping? I didn't think they were based on what I hear but I'm no expert.

I use the XLR outputs into a Tascam USB mixer for direct recording and I have to turn up the Input Trim on the two channels the Pod's XLR's are plugged into quite a bit just to get the meters on the Tascam mixer to rise up to 50%. (Not sure if the meters that far 'downstream' are telling me anything about clipping in the Pod's signal chain...)

  7. The DT only uses the topology choice etc of whichever amp is in path A. Also it uses the other settings from path A like drive treble etc.

I don't know if having a dual amp path has any effect on a DT, good or bad.

I've found that even when running into monitors or headphones I can use a single amp and get everything I was getting from having dual preamps with the exception of using two very different preamps in a dual path, I have a Dr Z and :13 dual amp that is really nice edge of breakup with nice thickness to it, although I'm not sure even those sounds can't be replicated with a single preamp choice with enough experimentation.

The DT is going to be such an improvement over headphones I think you won't miss dual amps at all.

  8. I have the HD500x with the DT25 and it can get a loud clean sound going. But loud in my home studio room and loud in your bands environment may be quite a different thing. I never have pushed a really clean tone to the max to see how much headroom I have.

In spite of how much I love the DT I find myself using the PodHD500 direct into my studio monitors at least half the time because I'm using a TwoNotes Torpedo CAB in the HD500's loop just after the mixer as the speaker cab and it sounds incredibly good. So I think if I was in your place I would go with the FRFR solution. It gives you so much more flexibility with massive headroom and the ability to mix in other channels from your bands mix.

The one caveat is I never spent much time with the PodHD's speaker cabs since the Torpedo CAB sounded so much better right away so I may not love the FRFR over the DT if I wasn't able to get the PodHD's speaker cabs to fulfill my needs...

I know a lot of people are just fine with the factory speaker cab sims so it probably is a better choice to go FRFR in your band situation. Clean headroom isn't something you can fake. You either have enough or you are doomed.

  9. Is there anyway the output settings could be made to store on a per preset basis?

I have the PodHD500x hooked up via L6 Link to a DT head and the XLR's into my mixer and change between presets that use one or the other for output.

Trying to remember change it manually is a problem. I find my self starting to adjust the parameters on the amp model because it sounds off only to realize too late I forgot to switch Output Settings....

If not per preset then per set list?

If not that then via an external midi controller?

  10. ...Just my amp rig alone would fill my car, so that left no room for the 6 or 7 guitars I nedd for this gig. This is going to make my life much simpler.

Just wait until you get the full dream rig. You will be able to fit a groupie in the car after the show!

  11. Yea, I have the DT25, and although I think it does the guitar amp better than anything else out there I wouldn't send acoustics to it. If you like using FRFR amplification for guitar amp models then there is no good reason to use the DT amps...but if you are like me and need that real amp sound you will need both, a FRFR for acoustic, etc. and a real amp for real amp sounds.

  12. The five way switch is always available in a 'normal' fashion for the magnetic pickups on the JTV when you use them. When you use the models you can 'lock out' the switch, volume and tone knobs...or just the knobs.... from changing the models' sounds so that you can control the magnetic pickups without changing the models sounds and control them separately either mixed with the models from the same outputs or from separate outputs having magnetics going to the guitar amp and the modeled sound going to another amp or PA so the acoustic sounds are better amplified cleanly.

When the five way switch is allowed to controll the Variax models it is actually calling up different models within the Bank of models that are called up by the modeling switch. For example, dial up the Lester bank on the Model switch and on the five way switch position 1, 3 and 5 are set to give you a two pick up Les Paul guitar with the appropriate bridge, combination of both or neck pick ups selected depending on the position chosen. The in between positions, 2 and 4 when using the Lester bank, are actually a bridge P90 and a neck P90 on a different Les Paul body. Of course you can assign any guitar model with any pickup to any of the switch positions so when you use the switch to control the Variax guitars/instruments it may be relatively predictable or it may be five different bridge pickups on five different guitars....

Another cool twist is you can assign the tone and/or volume knobs to control parameters in the effects (multiple if you choose) instead of tone and volume....so... You could, for example, make pitch glide of a whammy effect on the tone and put delay mix and repeats to increase and at the same time have reverb level decrease all with a single twist of the volume!
