  1. While in 'Global' any change you've made (Variax wize) will not be save into the preset.


    If you open a preset file, there is a section Global for each preset where Variax settings are stored:

    For instance, while in 'Per preset' mode, select Lester on your Variax, save the preset you're in.

    Now switch to 'Global' mode, select any other model other than Lester, save your preset again. 

    Switch to 'Per preset' once more, the Lester model will still be there again.


    'Global' just means than anything you do with Variax settings won't be saved within the preset, in fact

    it will be saved somewhere in the Helix, but will never be saved in any presets/setlist/bundle.  Being

    in this mode, only, override anything specified in the Vaxiax settings for each preset.  So if you select

    Semi, it will stay on Semi model for the entire 1024 presets available.


    Thanks for the in depth analysis. This is a poor implementation of Variax control. The HD500 had it right: the current Variax model ON THE GUITAR did not change unless the selector switch is moved, or forced by the HD500 preset if you choose to. So if you have a series of HD presets, say Deluxe Reverb, and you want to use a Strat for some songs and Les Paul for others, you just select the guitar model and change HD presets. AND, if you change any of the HD effects, the Variax guitar model isn't stored on the HD.


    With the Helix,

    - in Variax Preset mode if you change any of the effects, it automatically stores the Variax model when the HD preset is saved. That's really a pain, because you have to navigate to he input block of the Helix and de-select the stored Variax model every time!

    - In Variax Global mode what ever Variax model is stored at the time Global mode is entered, that Variax model is now the default for all 1028 presets! Ouch!


    I hope they rectify this soon, it makes using the Variax with the Helix very difficult. Combine that with the lack of DT amp control (not Topology, Class, or Tri/Pentode functions without midi commands, and the "Dream Rig" concept just isn't there for the Helix.

  2. When I tweak a Helix preset, it automatically loads the current Variax model when I save the preset. This did not happen with the HD500. The Variax model is not saved with the Helix preset

    Am I doing something wrong, or can this not be changed? When I want to use several different variax guitar models with a Helix amp model, I don't want the Helix to save the currently loaded one.

  3. I'm using the FX Send as a stereo output into my CPS Space Station as a feed for my JTV acoustic tones. When I tweak it with HD Edit, it sounds great in gorgeous stereo and I save it the the HD500x. BUT, when I disconnect the HD from my computer, load another preset, then go back to the acoustic preset, it's in mono. I've played with the mixer, the FX Send setting, but nothing seems to help.


    I save the preset from HD Edit, and on the HD500x itself. Any ideas? Is this a bug in the FX Send?


    Update- if I move the EFX loop block, it restores the stereo output of the send. Still, if I load another preset and reload the acoustic preset, the FX send reverts to being mono.

    Update 2- I opened a support ticket. I believe this is a software bug.

  4. You do make a good point!

    Line 6 wants to get as much of the guitar playing market as possible and this is probably a good move for them. NAMM is a very exciting time. We all wait eagerly to see the new goodies. To have a certain amount of pomp and circumstance surround an entry level guitar is just…meh! But I get it!


    Line 6 has a history of producing beginners/bedroom player kind of low budget not very well made gear. When they introduced the DT series amps and the new Pod HD line along with the partnership with boutique guitar builder James Tyler, they sent a signal that they are going to make a strong move to shake off this low budget perception and cater to the Pros with high quality gear. I mean, so far so good. I love my Dream Rig (past issues notwithstanding).


    Amplifi sort of took them back to the bedroom. Now this budget guitar. Not sure what Firehawk is. Sounds like great stuff to rock out with you headphones but not really intended for the stage. (I'm being very general here) I fear that this is the direction that is most important to Line 6 and us Pro players…well…No Soup For You! Unnecessary fear maybe, but it crosses my mind now and then.


    Who goes to NAMM to check out budget stuff? I want to see the best of the best! 


    So you are right! What's the gripe? The gripe is I am not a beginner guitarist and I wanted something a bit more "WOW" from Line 6. Basically, Line 6 didn't please ME! Can you believe that Sugar Honey Ice T?


    I take my rig to gigs and people are blown away by my tone, blown away at how I effortlessly go from electric to acoustic and altered tunings. Then they are especially blown away that it is from Line 6! I love it and I want to keep blowing them away! But no one is going to be blown away by me showing up with no Pacifica! Nor am I going to pay $4000 for a Korean guitar that happens to be assembled in the US and painted Orange!

    Who goes to NAAM to see budget stuff? Probably the majority of the music equipment retailers that attend the show and sell to the vast majority of players who don't gig... sorry that they didn't please you. BTW, you've already got their current top of the line, so I don't know what you expected. The next generation? I guess we'll all have to wait. I'm looking forward to it too.

  5. It would have been nice to see a Variax in one of Yamahas signature line guitars as opposed to one of their budget lines. This is supposed to be the guitar that changes the game for guitarists. One that even the Pro's are considering. Seems like a step backwards to me. But this is the first offering. I hope there is a more "Pro" version on the horizon.

    Maybe I'm not understanding the gripe. L6 is trying to establish the Variax in the lower price points with the same modeling as their $3500 guitars, so they can sell more and create a market for higher end models in the future.


    So they have:

    1. The $700 Variax Standard built in a decent quality lower end guitar(compare it to the 300/ 600- it's MUCH better)

    2. The Korean JTV69/59/89 Variax for those who want a mid-range quality guitar(on par with $800-1500 guitars)

    3. The JTV59/69/89 US for those who want a boutique quality, custom built quality guitar with the Variax option.


    I think this gives the potential Variax buyer a range of products that would appeal to most. Honestly, I just bought a Chinese Epiphone G-400 Pro where the fit, finish, hardware and tone are easily the equal of most Gibsons that cost $1000-$1500. I would imagine the the Yamaha Variax when set up properly should be a reasonably good playing and sounding guitar. Time will tell.

  6. IMHO, there really nothing "custom" about most custom guitars. 99.97% of the time they are little more than production models with a few aesthetic bells and whistles to justify what is usually a comical price tag.


    That said, I love my Korean JTV, and never played the US custom...but for nearly $4k, I'd be buying a scratch 'n' dent Korean JTV from Sweetwater for $800, take the other $3K or so and find someone who builds genuine custom axes, where you can get exactly what you want, and cannibalize the other JTV for the electronics.

    I think you're making a generalization that usually isn't true. For a guitar to be custom, you go to a luthier like Tyler and pick out the neck profile, frets, fingerboard material, pickups, tuners, body finish, neck finish, color, other hardware etc. Maybe if you order from the Fender "custom" shop it's more true, but even there you can specify many of the options you'd like for your instrument.

  7. I would like to know the lifetime most are seeing with the JJ tubes in the DT25. Mine lasted about 3 months before blowing out and taking the fuse with them.


    I did really like to tone of the amp with the JJ's, but have refrained from using them after they blew.

    I've had JJ's in other amps before, and never had a problem with reliability. Any brand or quality of tubes can fail, so I would buy them from a reputable dealer which usually comes with a warranty.

  8. I have a DT25 and want to be ready to change the tubes when the time comes. Thanks for the recommendation. Did you rebias the amp at all when you fitted the new tubes? (I would need a repair technician to help me with that)



    I always rebias power tubes when changing. It can make a big difference on how the amp sounds and tube life.

  9. I'd been having a few volume and tone issues with my DT25, the volume seems to had dropped a bit, and the tone had sounded a bit weak, and not as punchy, so I figured t was time to retube,,


    I've had JJ's before and they were a good sounding, not excessively expensive tube, so I bought a set from Eurotubes. They were delivered quickly and I highly recommend them.


    The verdict- huge improvement in tone! The volume is back- headroom has increased markedly.The tone is tight and focused, and the low end isn't flabbly at all. I can crank a high gain tone to pretty high volume and not get mushy.


    The balanced 12ax7 in the phase inverter section might be responsible for the improved headroom.


    If you're looking for replacements, you might try these out.

  10. I view the complaints about the "lack" of updates as a symptom of today's entitlement society. We are "entitled" to updates because we want them, and sure as hell, don't want to pay for them.. Wahh! I want to download music for free, and don't want to pay for it.(which has ruined the music business) Wahh! I'll pirate movies, because I deserve to watch it without paying for it, screw the people who spent millions to create it. Wahh!


    I own a business, and you can't believe how many people want stuff for free, just because they feel entitled to it. I have to explain that we can't stay in business, and deliver quality if we give stuff away for free. But they don't care- they just want it.


    Get a grip, dudes! If the HD500x or other digital device doesn't do the job for you for the price you paid, return it or sell it or do a work-a-round. And stop complaining, make some music...

  11. Actually, there is something wrong with the Line 6 "haters" that are dismiss L6 products out of ignorance. Don't be swayed by group think- make your own decision. I have a DT25 and 50 using the dream rig and get a huge variety of great tones, that get compliments from many of my guitar playing friends. In a cover band playing a wide variety of material, it's a godsend. BTW, I have Fender, Marshall,(had) Matchless, and Groove Tubes amps which I use to record, but my go-to live rig is the DT25/50.

  12. This happens to me sometimes if I don't press the footswitch cleanly. Also make sure none of the physical knobs aren't either at 0 or 100% on the pod or amp. The vibration can cause the encoders to engage and cut the sound. I'm assuming you don't have the pod connected to a computer.

  13. I used to love the 335 model in 1.9, to me the 335 in 2.1 iw useless. I have a real 335, and the 2.1 doesn't soiund like my 335 or any that I've ever played- real nasal sounding in all 3 pickup positions. I've tried it with the Casino body(which I like), but it sounds too close the the Casino with the original P90's.


    Anybody have a good one?
