So, is buffered line level or instrument level signal?

Edited- Nvm I looked it up- Its instrument level with very hi input impedance and low output impedance. Improves high freq response over the pedal chain. Like Hamm said- you can run a long cable without Hi end losses.

Again: You're talking about Helix RACK... Anyway, it's always better to check before you plug ;-)

Yes, I am.  Since the OP didn't state which he had, and it wasn't mentioned yet that I can find that these ports were the same ON the RACK unit, and since the floor unit doesn't have a controller connection so "obviously" I was speaking about the Rack unit, I thought Id warn others about this. Just as I stated above... I assume thats ok?  ;)

If you would goto the "Sweetwater" site, they show a Helix Rack unit from the back side. On the top right side in the back of the Helix Rack, you will see a 1/4" out called Guitar Thru "Buffered".

I am hoping this is a dry guitar signal output.

 

 

 

The perception of loudness difference occurs between these two extremes since the amps behave differently when they distort.

What exactly does "Buffered" mean on this output?

Is this output designed to go right into an amp's guitar input, or is it at line level?

Just started up Workbench and I can't believe it doesn't work with the Helix!

 

What were they thinking of, every Line 6 video of the helix has someone playing a variax!

It was the same thing with the Pod XT Pro rack when it 1st came out too. They eventually (theres that word again) fixed it.

But one thing I did notice on the RACK UNIT- is that the Helix Control port and the Variax port are "right next to one another". And from the looks of the ports, they both appear to be using an RJ45 connector.

Be careful what plugs into what or damage might occur!

 

I actually think people might complain that the editor is HARDER to use for Helix (except perhaps on touch-screens, which, alas, Apple is too stupid to implement).

Im getting the rack unit so the back support problem is less of an issue for me (but I can see its worth with the floor units). The reason I do want that editor is because Im used to using it (because of the wonderful Axe FX II editor) sitting right next to my DAW software on the 2nd monitor screen. Makes the workflow so much easier because I hardly ever need to remove my eyes from the two monitor displays ! 

Yesterday's tones are often copied and seldom achieved , for good reason.  ;)

I run a Kemper (and soon a Helix) into an Art SLA-II amp bridged, and then mono out into a 1960a cab. Sounds good to me.

If that were the case, wouldn't it show up in pretty much any system with any OS? I've been recording with my Helix via USB on Windows 10 for a good 8 or 9 months now, and I've never had any issues.

Yea yer right, he did mention a 60 Watt keyboard amp at first.  :P  But that fender twin is loud lol. Maybe there is just something wrong with the Keyboard amp perhaps? I also used a Peavey (TnT I think)  keyboard amp- had a 15" in it. Had tilt back and was loud as well. The only other way to spread the noise on stage besides volume and separate monitor feeds, is in ear monitoring. Thats usually too expensive, or was when I was doing this stuff.

Hi! The amp was behind me a the correct hight. No monitor sends around the stage as we were playing in a regular size pub and would never normally need to do that. My regular set up is a Fender Twin with effects and an MXR Micro Amp to boost the solos. The Helix sounded amazing (tone and effects wise) but on stage the 60 watt amp lacked head room and just wasn't filling-out the sound of the band. We are not a super loud metal band or anything like that, but we do have a bit of ooommmph! I need a slightly louder solution, I think??

A fender Twin? That amp is awesome and loud. Arn't those amps 85 watts? Uncle Ted used to use those on stage ( 4 or 6 of um IIRC) but that was a while back.

We also used to play in a regular sized bars and always used individual sends to each persons monitor (there were 6 of us), and the reason for that  (we all had amps on stage too) was we mixed other amps/ drums as needed (toward us individually) from way crossed the stage. The out side people didn't need to turn up to hear each other. In this way, our amp stage volumes did not need to be so loud because of dispersion. It made us play at a nice stage volume level while also allowing us to hear one another without killing the guy next to you. We also had a sound guy and he was a part of the group. Just wanted you too understand the reasons why this might be a solution for you.  :)

Thinking out loud here- a full 60 watts thru a good amp/speakers should be loud enough the sterilize herds of elephants at 30 yards. Was the stage amp pointed at your head or your knees? Were there any monitor sends from your amp to the other band members on stage? Maybe the stage volume overall was just too loud? 

There is always many other audio Interface choices out there with mature drivers available. MOTU, UA Apollo, RME, etc etc... Just use the Helix for what it is, a kickass guitar processor. :)

From what Ive used and purchased for my Kemper, profiling your amp is a great idea, if you have the right mic's and know how to profile the amp correctly. Some do, but for many its more hit or miss. Go Listen to some purchased professional profile sites 1st to get a better idea. Just goto the Kemper forum for the links as there are many.

I hate text sometimes... Im not upset. Im calm. No bickering here. Really. Just my opinion. Just calling a spade a spade. And Just because we all know a few people in the industry means very little as to what Yamaha tells Line 6 to do, or not do. Piano or used car salesman, its still pure speculation from all of us here me included. In other words we know nothing John Snow. I just brought the point up because its a valid opinion to assume that Yamaha can add resources when and where they are needed, as they see fit. Its their rodeo. To dismiss that line of reasoning is foolish. To assume my assumption is more than speculation is also foolish. I know that... But my opinion is Line 6 will do what their boss tells um to, and if Yamaha  (their boss as far as I see it) tells them to add more people/resources for the Helix editor, they will... And I personally think that would be a good thing ;)

Yamaha does not micro-manage or "run" companies that they own, historically. You can't just put a bunch of Yamaha software engineers on a plane for California. I really doubt it works anything remotely like that.

And just how "historically" do you know that? Are you kin to the CEO at Yamaha Hamm?  ;)

Im only saying that "if" Yamaha thought there was a shortage of resources at Line-6, they would do something about it.

Read into what you want with that, as I will.

Ultimately I just wish L6 either had the resources or the margin to throw more programmers and resources at things like firmware updates,  features, amps, and effects, bug fixes, and yes, the editor. They have to decide where the balance between profit and customer satisfaction lies and I would imagine there are a bunch of marketing and sales guys in weekly meetings with graphs and numbers doing just that. As a customer I definitely would prefer to see them lean heavily towards customer satisfaction and take the long view on profits.

I will be getting my Helix rack and control in about 6 days from Sweetwater after about a month of wait.  Really excited...

That's why God invented stage monitors.

Ive used the passive stage PA monitors with separate sends blah blah before. Im just not liking the normal passive PA stage monitor tone as much as lets say a a 500 watt CLR FRFR, or for that matter a 12" guitar speaker cab powered up with a tube head. Those are the real guitar stage monitors.
