The only thing that affects my bottom line is whether or not I'm paying sales tax.
Exactly, and I'd rather "keep" my hard-earned money if possible. That's not cheating anyone out of anything if I am legally able to do that.

Realistically though, most of everyone's tax dollars are frittered away on pointless, feel-good endeavors, given away to any and every special interest with a good enough sob-story, or just outright stolen.
That last part you mentioned is covered over in a "I can sell this for this much and write it up for this much" slimeball.

My question is should IRs sound the same as the sound files out of the box or do I have to alter settings on the Helix?
Yes, you need to alter the settings, but also learn how to do this to please your ears. IR's are different as some are done well, and others are not. The cabs in Helix are mostly what I use, along with those in the Power Cab +. It is a process but once you learn how to do this it will pay off. Keep reading here and elsewhere, listening and watching tutorials. Youtube is your friend. And welcome!

LOL yea I guess your right, about mostly all of us in here including you.

Without getting into a whole nother reason I strongly disagree with those statements, the simple fact is getting the best deal you can is not stealing. Nope, I don't steal a thing when saving money on a sweet deal. Hey, you like GC that's kewl, as lots of people do. I don't "dislike" them either, just one manager that works there is a jerk, but he (and maybe you) probably thinks the same about me. LOL and thats OK too. Peace Brother ; )

If you play the game like Sweetwater and Musicians Friend do, you then can compete. If you choose not to then you can more than likely live off of the Sears crowd for a while, but you will eventually fold. It's not personal, but it is cut throat business where only the ones with the best products at the most competitive (cheapest) price survives. And now with the "0" interest monthly payment plan Zzounds and others offer, I think the local Music stores may go the way of the dinosaur sooner rather than later.

At the risk of stating the obvious, the problem really isn't solved. There is an underlying problem with the way the hardware is communicating with a computer system over usb, and may be manifesting in ways other than the update process.
He said it completed the process. Isn't that part then solved and wasnt the update then completely installed? Or did I misunderstand that part?

Also, I didn't know you were a socialist who believes that he has the right to determine someone else's profit margin.
I'm not a socialist. Never been one either. Unlike some, I'm just not stupid with my money. ; ) You see, I'm only concerned about what I spend, not what they make. If that's your idea of socialism then so be it. Perhaps you are a bit naive if you think they don't make a huge profit one everything they sell, as they are in the business of making money (what businesses do) and can not do so without charging YOU waaayyyyy more than they paid for it, and THEN, telling you they must also charge tax too because the state makes them. They just don't have any choice... LOL, what a load of BS. They can and do manipulate that register in any way they see fit because I've seen them do it for "me". I personally don't have a problem with paying what something is worth to me, but I also know you can trust them about as far as you can throw them money-wise, and they are NOT there to make you rich. Other way around, and that's ok as "long as you know it". But hey If you want to pay them more please be my guest. No skin off my nose and more power to ya. I'm sure GC and the like will thank you all the way to the bank. Also, notice that I didn't call you pretentious for quickly assuming and judging me. ; )

Welp, I'm not paying tax on music gear unless I have to. And since I don't have to I save that money otherwise spent at the local GC. If they don't want to eat that tax money by cutting into their item for sale that priced 3 times what they paid for it, that's on them. ; )

Further lowering the price by eating the tax gives you a BETTER price than online.
No, it doesn't. It gives me the same price as online. He just loses the tax dollars as his profit because he can claim he sold it for "what-ever" he rings into the register. ; )

Large brick & mortar stores like GC will almost always price match an online dealer. However, you stlll have to add sales tax which, depending on your state, you're legally required to pay at tax time anyway if you buy online.
What the Manager of GC here does not like to do is lower the items price with the sales tax cost "included" on the unit/item to the matched price. I ordered the same thing out of state and because of those few 10s of dollars and GC (the manager) lost a sale. I'm sure he didn't go home and lose sleep over it (neither did I), but money is still money and that was still a stupid move on his part IMHO (and you just can't fix that). ; )

2.81- Tap Tempo is ok- changed tempos ok. All lights on Controller seem OK too.

Line-6 Updater file for a Mac is marked 1.18, but when run.... says it's Version 1.17 ?
Is this ok to use for updating to 2.81 on Helix?
EDITED: Even thou the file and info are different, HX Edit 2.81 updated the updater to 1.18 so all is ok. I think...

GOD BLESS YOU!!!
It worked out! The rack wasn't recognized anymore after the reboot, so after a while the updater was stopping the installation with an error.
This time I kept the helix where it was, as I've seen that after restarting the updater the helix was recognized as hosting a 2.8 firmware (even if failed at 50%).
Kept the rack as it was, in its previous state and started the update again. The updater after a bit installed the remaining 50% and completed the process!
Hey Bud, could you please add the word "Solved" to your opening post? Thanks and I'm glad its working now for you.

Conceptually, the steps for doing the update aren't really all the complex. I think DI's instructions are very detailed simply because he's trying to cover all the bases. They are so long and wordy because he's outlining every single step along the way - like to the point of telling people how to sign into Line 6 Updater.
You have to do that, and not assume that everyone knows what you do. I wish "all" Doc writers and Engineers had that kind of thought process. And yet, I read here from many who did NOT read what they should have read and got caught in the "failed" part of the update procedure. If I had not read that beforehand (the KEY to most of this) I woulda freaked out too.

I "just" ordered and received a Line-6 HX from Amazon. They push out stuff pretty fast over there, but my unit was dated 12/18 and had the version 2.5 OS in it. So the point I'm making is Cru is correct in that you will eventually see a Helix shipped with 2.8 in it yes, but it may not be very soon.
-
I "did" get a very short momentary volume increase (kinda like a blast/pop) on some snapshot switching in 2.71, so it's not just started from 2.8, at least for me. I never did figure it out, I learned to be mindful of when I switched snapshots and that helped some.
-
If you are able to register it with Line-6 and get the factory warranty, and you can't find anything wrong with it, I'd keep it. But be sure that you return to Guitar Center and tell the MANAGER what you found when you opened the box. Not that he really cares, but tell him anyway. I've had the same experience when ordering a "new" (Clarification -NEW means unopened to me) item from a major "Friend" chain (and it was not Sweetwater FYI).

You didn't quote what I stated. What I said was... "Could it have been done better? Yes, just like nearly everything else after the fact."
There is a huge difference, but thanks for playing.

Wait! Do you mean that this install makes me have to READ SOMETHING and the FOLLOW DIRECTIONS?!?
Baring the actual hardware failures, If following directions (non-software automation) makes me a fanboy then so be it.
Could it have been done better? Yes, just like nearly everything else after the fact.

When you offer an update - no matter it' s free or not - you MUST to give " easy life" to the customers, especially to the ones that have a professional use of Helix.
This update isn' t an easy update. This is a real fact.
And on the "other" side of that fence, had they waited until everything worked in every possible configuration with every cable tested and with every known OS available to mankind, you might have seen this patch around 3132.

Way to "just say no". I just could not shy away from trying Helix 2.8 with my PC+ pair.

So you are saying simple step by step instructions for some doesn't mean its easy for others?
I agree. They "could" have made it easier, but it "is" what it "is". What we have is what we have.
And, really the steps were not that hard to follow for me, because I read them 1st before starting the update.
That said, there are also some hardware issues that arise at times even after reading everything before you start.
I work around/with many very smart Engineers and Programmers from time to time, who can't remember where their car is parked at Walmart.
Good luck with a better install manual. ; )
