well Im obviousy a bit different!
I start by listening to it. I noodle a bit to get a sense of what sort of sound this is. Is it good for snappy parts?...thick chords? fast runs, big sustain?...
Once I feel I have the gist of the amp Ill start teaking the knobs a bit to maximies the potential within the parameters that the amps has suggested.
I never pick a model on the basis of having a predetermined sound in my head.
I do, obviously go to the general gain range...so if Im looking for a bick overdriven tome I know not to start with the Jazz Rivet!Yup. Pretty similar to what I do. The main difference might be that I go for the sounds I’ve heard on recordings. I’ve always taken this approach to guitar sound which is why most amps disappoint me.

Or, not sure this is feasible, ability to disable or enable 'stock' settings when selecting different amps. I dislike when I'm trying to do a slight breakup sound and trying amps out, and everytime I shift the amp type, have to redial in a lower gain/eq/master settings. instead of just changing amp type and keeping the current settings to make minor adjustments to.
They have that feature in Adobe Lightroom where you can select which parameters to copy. Not sure why it can’t be done for HX Edit. -

It is remarkable how flexible this gear is. I'm 4 years in and there's not a month that goes by that I don't discover new approaches and ideas for improving my sound, and I have NO interest at all in any new equipment. I've got everything I need and I use everything I've got....for the first time in my life!!!
Yup. I feel dat! Oh sure, there are pedals such as those made by Strymon that intrigue me but there's nothing out there that keeps me from gigging.

It's the same amount of computing either way. Since this is all real-time execution there's really no CPU overhead in managing these blocks. The only downside to me is that if you do decide later to break the amp and cab apart you have to rebuild them each by hand.
We could really use a "Copy Block Settings" as well as "Paste Block Settings" feature in the editor. Just like they do in photo editing apps. Obviously, this would only be applicable to the amp and cab blocks.

Still amazing. Still consistently sounding great. Still don't need anything else for gigging.

2.82 Update
in Helix
8 hours ago, Peter said:I instinctively tried this but had no success. What did work was to delete a few effects blocks and then hit the "Undo" button until they're all back and then hit "Save".
I had not tried it but maybe just deleting one block and then undoing it would have worked just as well.

2.82 Update
in Helix

This section of the update notes are are aimed at anyone updating from v2.71 or earlier. If you are already using v2.80 or 2.81, then your update should “go without a hitch”, as you noted that yours did. Although, you didn’t mention which version of the firmware you were upgrading from. If it was earlier than 2.80 then it is important and even though it is there in the notes, in big black block capitals, many, many people did “freak out” with cries of “firmware bricked my Helix” and all the usual “user error” nonsense through simply disregarding or not bothering to read the notes correctly.
The comment about “Turn off or disconnect any connected Helix or HX hardware”, is probably to avoid driver installation issues, as noted by Peter in his post, above. It’s also probably a Line 6 “get out of jail free” card, because there is bound to be somebody, somewhere who will scream - “firmware bricked my Helix!” - There’s always has been and always will be one!
I was going from 2.70 to 2.82.-

2.82 Update
in Helix
This should be the first thing mentioned when reading about this update. I was updating from 2.70 to 2.82.
Quote-
halfway through the update process, Line 6 Updater displays a second dialog and Helix's LCD reads "Boot Failure. Entered Update Mode!" THIS IS NORMAL. DO NOT FREAK OUT, TAKE A PHOTO, AND THEN POST IT ONLINE BECAUSE EVERYONE WILL MAKE FUN OF YOU FOR NOT READING THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
-
- Click "OK" again. When finished, Helix restarts automatically and begins rebuilding your presets. Let it finish.
My update experience went through with out a hitch!
I don't really understand the need for this instruction before you download the update though -
QuoteTurn off or disconnect any connected Helix or HX hardware.
I actually forgot to do it but that didn't seem to be a problem.

The sound quality Helix Native is subject to the quality of your audio interface's A/D converter.

I still wish they'd implemented my idea of Two Phase Snapshots.

Just my 2 cents, but I think a little perspective might be in order. Nothing involved here is permanent. You're not donating a kidney... if you do the update and all hell breaks loose with the LA comp, roll it back to 2.71. Problem solved. The most "apocalyptic" result might be that you'll waste 40 minutes bouncing back and forth.
I just don’t want to have to roll back. Life keeps me pretty busy so I want to upgrade and stay there. I’m sure a stable version will come. And as I like to say, for me, there’s nothing missing in 2.70. I just don’t want to be too far back in the firmware versions.

It's not like it's a foregone conclusion...I have no random volume fluctuation issues, and I use the LA Comp all over the place.
Not taking any chances

Unfortunately, I can say that I am having issues with random drops in patch volume associated with patches with the LA Comp at the end of the chain.
Well, I don't need that.

Hi,
Not really, other than a small glitch with the Joystick and because of a recent repair it made me regress to v.2.71 just to confirm it wasn’t a hardware thing. Reloaded 2.8 - glitch gone and the whole thing of going back and forth took less than an hour, if that.
File under - mostly harmless!
Thank you, sir.

As a Mac user, I am very curious to see if other Mac users have had issues with the update. I’m admittedly quite nervous about doing it and at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I’m quite happy with my Helix at 2.7.
Actually, I was quite content with the previous version and not in any way taken advantage of or used any of the additions in 2.7.

Well, I may only gig on weekends now but there's no way I could do it without the Helix. I live on an island and getting off and back again, especially in the summertime, just to get the Helix fixed is not an option. The update and the Helix can get borked by a simple USB cable or USB port? Nooo thank you.
It ain't broke and I'm still very happy with it the way it is at 2.7... no update for me.
-
Now, I am definitely waiting for the next maintenance update as I'm still happy with 2.70. Do not need the headache.
-
Has these updating issues been mainly on PCs or are they happening on Macs too?
-
Any Mac users running Sierra having these same issues here?
-
I wonder if this update is taking so long because... it's the last one or is, at least, the last iteration of the firmware because this last version will be squeezing the most out of the Helix. We might get a patch or two afterwards but nothing major because the next major revision will require newer hardware - the next iteration of the Helix. Think about it. The Helix was release June 11 2015. That was 4 years ago and that's a long time in tech years.
I mean, I'd be ok with it. I just can't help but wonder.

Hmm, did anyone else see the whole L6 site go down for a few beats there? Not to start any rumors or false hopes but I have seen this happen before right before they drop the new firmware...
Well... they are a little late according to their announcement here in this forum... not that I really care. Still pretty happy with my Helix the way it is.

Meh. Amps are way too limiting for my tonal palette needs. I just sold my Quilter Aviator 8, which I dearly loved but it always left me needing more sounds. I had a pedalboard but have pretty much gotten rid of all the individual pedals that I depended on. Still, when I had it it wasn’t as satisfying as what the Helix gives me.
Fender mustang foot switch compatibility

What kind of connector do they use? They might be but only partially. If they use a TRS connector, I think the Helix considers those to be an expression pedal. Not sure how the Helix would deal with a Foot switch connected via TRS. I believe those foot switches are also latching and not momentary contact. That might be a problem too.
