  1.

Couldn't manage to upload the presets to CustomTone so far. Will try it later ...

CustomTone still does not provide support for sharing the Variax Workbench Patches

See this thread for info on where to post Workbench patches (all versions)

  6.

The problem with my guitar is that it goes out of tune if I do bends, and I hate that, so I stretch the strings until bends don't detune the guitar, but then if I use the tremelo, it goes out of tune. It's a lose-lose situation, so I just use bends for now.

I mounted  a SuperVee Mag-lok on my  floating "strat type" bridge guitars (Variax 600, JTV-69, and also works on old Variax 700 )  and now experience more stability, better tone,

  8. Up until recently i had the Tremol-No on my JTV-69 -

    (I explain it here)

    JTV-69 Tremolo Setup

    http://line6.com/support/message/323936#323936:

However I'm playing the JTV-69 more in a band situation and in my case - i found the Tremol-no just did not hold up  - and was way too fiddly - missing set screws and actually falling right off the guitar at a gig once.

So I removed it - and now rely on a SuperVee Maglok on my JTV-69  - WHICH I LOVE!!

  9. Its a bummer - because the old variax's had less pops and less PU change latency

We'll have to compare and see if the Tyler Variax can accomplish this

    http://www.vettaville.nl/vvworkbench5.htm

In April 2005 Vettaville.nl posted a video with a Whammy like effect using the tone selector switch on the Variax. The demo was performed by Ron Huisen; Product Specialist for Line 6.

There have been several requests to explain how to do this. Here are the patches (tones) for Variax Workbench that you should place in order and upload to your Variax accordingly. Then you're ready to do the trick.

Please note that these are only tones for your Variax and no 'amp' tones. This is something you can choose yourself. The tones will work if you have the Variax Workbench program. Just click the links to view the video and download the tones. Have fun

  10. I use Fender Bullets as my preferred strings on all my guitars with Strat type tremolos, including the JTV-69.

The Fender Bullet end is definitely superior to regular strings. I've been using Fender Bullet strings for decades and when a string breaks, its never at the bullet end.

    Normal String Ball ends

    bullets2.jpg

    Fender Bullet Ends

    bullets1.jpg

These strings have several benefits for Variax JTV-69  users.

The Bullets "sit snug " in the Tremolo Block and are more stable  - which means the guitar is far more stable and stays in tune after whammy bar use.

    * If a string does break, the possible Loose Bullet end is sufficiently large enough that it would not migrate thru  MY piezo bridge cable pass thru hole and end up in the DSP PC board cavity. (BUT SEE BELOW FOR EXPLANATION WHY)

    * The other benefit is the fact that Fender Bullet strings are a "polished" round wound string that allows lower action with less buzz on frets, which improves Alt Tunings and yields fewer sonic anomalies compared to standard round wound strings  - as a MIDI Guitarist, i also prefer Fender Bullets as the polishing yields much less sonic squeaks from my fingers as a change fast jazz chord changes.

    * Fender Bullet Strings are on all of  Larry Carlton's guitars, and many session players in LA rely on them for cleaner "no finger squeak / no fret buzz " guitar recordings

    ====================

But back to the topic of this thread - how to prevent ball ends migrating into the JTV-69's  DSP cavity and making sparks and smoke -

I suggest all JTV-69 Owners re-visit my old thread on the old forum here:

    JTV-69 Tremolo Setup

    (for the JTV-69 "Gen II" models  - Summer 2011 version)          Oct.30, 2011

    http://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=9371.msg67477#msg67477

Ask Line 6, and its apparent there remains several opinions on the correct location for the cable ties used on the Variax Piezo Cable Harness.

In the pic below  - See the cable "pass thru hole" in the JTV-69 body for the two grey piezo bridge cables to pass from the rear tremolo spring cavity to the DSP Board cavity.

    IMG_3113.jpg

    HIDDEN CABLE TIE

What is NOT readily apparent is the "HIDDEN CABLE TIE" on my JTV-69 - LOCATED INSIDE the cable "pass thru hole".

In the pic below, observe the hidden internal cable tie located out of sight, inside the cable feed thru hole to the DSP board inside the body. Securing these cables properly is mandatory for proper Tremolo operation. If the Piezo bridge cables are not properly managed with tie wraps placed at specific locations, they WILL  create friction as the cables rub against the body and become a constant source of tremolo instability.

    P1020019.jpg

and another pic of this "hidden"  black cable tie!

    P1020037.jpg

This cable tie located inside the cable pass thru hole help minimizes the chance of broken Fender Bullet  ends migrating into the DSP board and causing an electrical short on the Variax DSP board..

But there are no guarantees - if you break a string at the ball end during a gig - and cant immediately change it or find the loose ball end  - I advise unplug the guitar and remove the Variax Battery,  until you can inspect the guitar's DSP board cavity for loose ball ends and replace the string

  11. I finally have down loaded and installed The 2.0 HD update to one of my Tylers.
Probably going to revert to 1.9.
Line6 has placed this odd ADSR Envelope on the Strat tones (always been there even on JTV Firmware 1.9) , but the new HD 2.0 Strats are just plain lifeless with no sustain - by design. something is VERY wrong when you can dial up a Mesa Dual Treadplate  Amp Patch on the HD500X and then use the new Tyler HD 2.0 Strat, yet  have zero sustain. I've heard more sustain on a Ukelele.

Does anyone at line6 beta test this stuff before its released? I find it hard any company would release this and call it a "Strat"

  12. There's also an iOS app for editing the DT series of Line 6 amps. It, too, works with the MIDI Mobilizer.

    Please tell me more!

    I'm only aware of this

A MIDI Controller for Line 6 DT50 Amplifier Series

    title-in-ipad-vert.png

Guitarist François Desnoyers has been one of the most influential people in the MIDI Designer Community. Features from his suggestion list are still being implemented in every MIDI Designer release, and his international French is behind the French App Store text. But as you can see from his layouts, he’s serious about making MIDI Controllers, like this one for the Line 6 DT50 Series Amplifiers.

The DT50 series comes as a head (with a separate cabinet) or as a head-cab combo with two options (1×12 or 2×12). It’s gotten some great reviews, too.

But most users of the DT50, like any amp, use “set and forget.†You might switch channels with a footswitch, but that’s about it. François’ MIDI controller for the DT50 brings control to a new level. And the best part? You can mix and match your amp control pages with the author’s control pages for the Pod X3 Live or any other FX unit.

This is a convenient and practical way to get control of your DT50. If you own a DT50 and an iPad, you owe it to yourself to check this MIDI controller out.

  13. I think the hot setup for me on the JTV89 is going to be a Ghost T-O-M with a Bigsby, yeah the Bigsby is going to look out of place on the 89 BUT 1. no one else is ever going to see the guitar, I only use it for recording and 2. I don't care

I have much experience in setting up all types of tremolos

Many have already pointed out the "slop" in the Tyler Variax HardTail Bridge employed on JTV-59 and JTV-89 - but this "saddle slop" works to my advantage on my JTV-59 with Bigsby

No "Creak" or wound Strings getting stuck at a fixed Saddle. ( I have added GFS locking tuners and a Graphtech self lubricated "Trem Nut" )

    20130523_022535_zps2a602406.jpg

Its false common assumption that having a rock solid tone pros style locked down bridge is the best for every guitarist's situation. I'm here to say the old 1950's and 1960's Gibsons with Bigsby's  and Vibrola Tremolos only worked for working professional musicians back then because the T.O.M. Bridge was designed to be "sloppy" and float and rock and pivot on Convex domed shaped height adjust thumb screws move right along with the strings as the Tremolo use changed the strings tension.

    Details here:

    http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/13160-looking-for-written-detailed-app-info-for-bigsby/

As a test to "see" this movement - get a Sharpie permanent marker and place small marks on your strings right at at bridge saddles - move the wammy bar and watch as the G string moves quite a lot during trem bar use.

If you clamp down the Bridge and all the saddles - the Strings will get stuck in the saddles (even Graphtech TUSC T.O.M. Saddles) and never stay in tune.

    --

The stock 1960s era ES-355s' and SG Standards with factory Maestro Vibrola used a special ABR-1 bridge

"Originally, in the early 1960's Gibson designed an ABR-1 just to be used with trems back in the 60's. Just about all Vibrola SG's were equipped with them as well as a lot of other models (ES's) that received factory Vibrolas. The thumbwheels were also domed so the bridge could rock back and forth with the trem movement. Unfortunately, gibson has failed to reissue these bridges for their new guitars. Check it out:"

    SGABR-1.jpg

    Compare:

    Standard ABR-1 Thumbscrew:

    thumbwheeldome2a.jpg

    vs

"Dome" shaped ABR-1 Thumbscrew 0 used on Gibson ES-345 with Bigsby in 1963

    thumbwheeldome1.jpg

In the 1960's Gibson used two special "domed" shape height adjustment thumbscrews under the ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge - with rounded tops - specifically so the bridge would rock and pivot with the strings during trem arm bends.

More about all Bigsby models here:

IMHO - If you use a clamped and locked Tonepros type bridge with a Bigsby - you are asking for trouble.

  14. taoubt - thanks for the good report on your experience

The only issue I have is not being able to use my Pod as an interface in conjunction with the Workbench HD.

Line 6 needs to revisit using an  iPad / iPhone as an interface in conjunction with the Workbench HD asap IMHO - they already showed a prototype of this concept using the Line6 MIDI Mobilizer  back in 2009

  15. After some noodling around I discovered what was causing the KLUNK/KLACKing noises, the Piezos do not fit snugly into the slots on the bridge and when they move from side to side they strike the side of the slot causing a big KLACK!. I will be shoving something in there to hold them in place (already tried but haven't found anything small enough to fit into the space, the point of a toothpick is just barely too thick, a staple is too thick...

Adding string dampers to the "non speaking" string length past the Nut and the Bridge saddles WILL help tame the warbles that occur when you engage DSP Alt Tunings.
