Make Your Variax Sound 100% Better
katiekerry replied to katiekerry's topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Well I am glad it helped.. did you have to use the velcro on the bridge. I didn't get the string buzz across the bridge. But I felt there was allot of vibrations from the tail piece.. I thought it sounded better than the wrap around setup but not as perfect as it did with the velcro.. Just wondering... your take -

Actually if its the same place on ebay you should get it in about a week or so.. It was relatively quick delivery.. but you will need to use the velcro dampening still, cause there is even more vibrating string past the bridge saddles much like the tuning pegs and the nut on the headstock.. but you won't get the vibrations against the wrap around bridge.. its kinda like the wildness of a old bigsby hollow body you need to tame the beast a little.. good luck though -

here are the pics and by the way I make certain you drill that dead center other wise it will throw off the string alignment..( I am sure you know that I just wanted to remind you).. I also curved the bracket to match the curve of the guitar so that it would fit snug.. -

Yeah I drilled my own hole for the strap button. I also used a couple of layers of painters tape on the side that faced the body so it wouldn't scuff my finish.. I didn't bother cutting off the edge though you could it doesn't affect me at all having it stick out a 1/4 of a inch.. I will post a close up pick.. -

Yeah I am with you on that something got changed when adding the tail piece for me it turned out positive, I have gone through and made sure the intonation was right and the way the bridge was sitting was up to par.. Thanks for the info Its funny how little things affect sound and playability. before I purchased the variax I had tried many different guitars and modded them in different ways. (adding hi mass tremblocks, using brass vs steel, wrapping strings around the tail stops, using different pickups and capasitors) they all added playability and improved tone. I would actually like to try one of those xtrem settups ( no modding my 59 body to use it).. -

I am totally with you on that, But all that I am saying is that prior to adding the tail piece I could not adjust the JTV bridge as low as I could after adding it. (I would get fret buzz in certain frets, and would get dead frets). I even tried it after I had the action set with the tail piece but just used the bridge alone buzzed on certain frets, when I put it back on no buzzing at all.. It shouldn't affect it at all but for some reason it does.. I agree 100% it should make no difference but it does ( maybe the longer strings make a difference I do not know). -

I think possible the angle that the strings originally wrapped around the bridge was allot sharper of an angle than when using a tail piece that allows the strings to be more parallel with the fret board right from the get go..( I know after it hits the bridge saddles it is parallel with or without the wrap around bridge) All that I know is that after I installed the tail piece I was able to lower my string height significantly with out getting buzz from the frets.. I always set up my guitars with the lowest possible action after I purchase them.. -

I am so jazzed that helped you, Its so much more inspiring playing a instrument that sounds the way its supposed too.. when you install the tailpiece you will be able to lower the action allot also ( without any fret buzzing). Good luck though I like to here good things like that.. And just a heads up I use the soft half of the velcro not the harse plastic side but it may work also... -

Yeah it reasonated a little but it feels way more comfortable playing compaired to the wrap around bridge only. Biggest issue (with just the wrap around bridge) was the noise from the string ends vibrating againts the bridge it rang through the bridge piezo like crazy.. And more often than not my palm would get cut from the bures on the string ends... I like the shrink tube Idea also.. The velcro just feels really good on your palm and it mutes it also so double wammy... -

yeah for a while I was wrapping the ends with plumbers tape, now I have switched back to a velcro strip again.. Both methods seem to work well.. I like the added comfort palm muting with the velcro strip.. -

I had tried plumbers tape with good results, using the 59 wrap around bridge. It should also work well on the 69 bridge.. I think part of the issue is some of the manufacturers wrap too far up the string and it vibrates against part of the bridge( then the piezo picks it up as a artifact)... with the tape or velcro it mutes the vibrations.. -
I actually had issues where the new HDedit tanked my laptop. Had to reinstall the os x yosemite.. But the second time around I used line 6 monkey to update it instead of Download area.. I was able to get it all updated.. I did the flash and firmware first this time around.. Unfortunatley though it caused me to have to install the current version of yosemite 10.3 which I did not want but I guess I will have to get used to it.. I wish I could go back to mavericks or even older I hate yosemite... anyways enough rambling

As far as a hard tail Standard variax goes ( you could just block it) thats what i did with my Fender Strat.. The thing holds true no matter how nuts you go with the string bends and rock solid tuning also.. they do have the tremelo no devise but I have never had much luck with those.. besides a couple of solid pieces of wood does wonders..

This looks interesting for a trem conversion no need to drill extra holes or anything,, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-Fri_jPIUo

Just a follow up, The tuning is rock solid so I am happy its actuall kinda easy to stretch the strings by just pressing down the tailpiece.. And I no longer need the velcro on the bridge or to wrap the strings (no more vibrations transfering through the bridge).. It feels allot more comfortable to play now also has much lower action than before win win.... -

Yeah I did that but thank you, It still tends to stretch for a week or so.. very subtle but still it changes.. I do the method of fretting the 3rd fret and pull to my hearts content, then retuning until it stops shifting.. -

Well got my new tailpiece and I think it turned out awesome.. added Strap locks also. for some reason after I added the tailpiece I was able to lower the action allot with out any buzzing so I am happy with that. Just waiting for the strings to stretch enough to know how stable my tuning is. but so far so good.. -

yeah as soon as I get it I will post pics, I just didn't want to modify the 59, I think this way it fixes the bridge issues with out drilling holes for a tail stop..
