  1. I had my amp in my car which was blown away in the May 20th tornado so I'm starting from scratch. I hope this makes sense, I have read that when using your PODxt Live through an amp you get the amps tone a little bit and that you can adjust the amps EQ setting to make it so the amps tone doesn't show as much. Is there a Line 6 amp or any other brand of amp or speaker cab that you can just have the PODxt Live's tone be 100% pure?

  4. Hey guys! New to the forums. I have one simple question. I just ordered a new set of knobs for the spider valve and noticed that the knobs braking are quite common. Just connect the MIDI OUT from the POD HD500/HD500x to the MIDI IN on the DT amplifier with a MIDI cable. Then, go in the POD HD500/HD500x's MIDI assign screen (by holding the MOVE button for a few seconds) to assign a footswitch to send the desired MIDI parameters to change the settings on the DT amplifier. From here, you need to reference the DT amplifier's MIDI CC reference charts above to assign the proper MIDI CC to a footswitch on the POD HD500/HD500x. For example, on the DT50 amplifiers, sending MIDI CC# 11 with a value of 0-30 will change the assigned HD amp model set to any one of the voicings on Channel A of the DT50. So, if you want to change Voicing I of Channel A on the DT50 amp from the original Fender Blackface to be a Hiway 100 amp model instead, do the following: On any preset (blank or not) on the POD, go to the POD's MIDI Assign screen by holding the MOVE button for a few seconds. We suggest doing this on a blank new preset so that you can use this preset to send these MIDI messages to your DT amplifier. Let's assign Footswitch 1 (FS1) to send MIDI CC# 11 with a value of 003. Press on FS1 so that the arrow is pointing to it in the POD's screen. Turn Knob 1 to select MIDI CH: Base. Turn Knob 2 to select Message: CC. Turn Knob 3 to select CC# 011. Turn Knob 4 to select Value: 003. You can exit the MIDI Assign screen by pressing the View button once. Now, by simply pressing the FS1 footswitch, you will be sending MIDI CC# 11 value 003 to the DT50 amp which will change the Voicing I of Channel A on the DT50 amp from the original Fender Blackface to be a Hiway 100 amp model. Press the Save button once, rename the preset with the knobs below the screen, then press the Save button once again to store these settings to the POD's preset. MIDI CC#11 value 0-30 will change the HD amp model on Channel A of the selected voicing on the DT25/DT50 amp. MIDI CC#12 value 0-30 will change the HD amp model on Channel B of the selected voicing on the DT25/DT50 amp. Here are reference charts for both the DT25 and the DT50 from the MIDI Reference guide to help you set your values when programming MIDI to the switches of the POD HD500/HD500x. MIDI can be assigned to any of the footswitches of the POD HD500/HD500x EXCEPT for the Bank Up and Bank Down switches. Using MIDI OX to send MIDI parameters to the DT amplifiers You can also use MIDI OX software to send the desired MIDI messages to your DT amplifier when using a dedicated MIDI interface connected between your computer set to work with MIDI OX and the DT amplifier's MIDI IN port. In MIDI OX, click on the Send MIDI Controller Messages button to see the following window: You’ll want to use the drop down window to select the desired controller event (as referenced in the documentation above such as MIDI CC# 11 or CC#12, etc.) and then select the value on the right (as in the previous example above, value of 0-30, etc.) then, hit the Send button to send that MIDI message to the DT amplifier. Notice the text by the numbers which are simply part of the standard MIDI spec. These descriptors are irrelevant for the DT amps – again, just look for the number that correlates to the DT parameter you want to send. It also may be confusing that the numbers are not listed sequentially. If you wanted to change the preamp for the current Voicing of channel A you would select number 11 (labeled expression in the MIDI OX drop down) and number 3 (if you wanted to load the Hiway 100 model for example) using the up/down buttons in the field labeled Value. Hit send and the current Voicing on Channel A should be the Hiway 100. If you have more headroom, the amp will feel like it responds to your playing subtleties better and you’ll have more dynamic range for expressive playing. With less headroom, you get into serious distortion without playing as hard. Topology: the layout of a “feedback topology” of the amp circuit referring to the voicing of the global negative feedback of the DT50. Changing circuits will change the voicing of the amplifier. Class A: an amp design where current is flowing through the tubes constantly. Headroom is deceased, so tone becomes distorted sooner. Class AB: an amp design where a pair of tubes work together by “trading” duties (one is conducting current while the other is in cutoff). Sometimes the term “push-pull” operation is used to describe this mode. Provides greater headroom and tone remains clearer as a result. Bias: the voltage value between the control grid (grid #1) and the cathode, which dictates the power tube’s behavior in terms of distortion cutoff/saturation. There are two types of biasing methods: fixed-bias and cathode-bias (sometimes called self-biasing or auto-biasing). The DT50 operates in fixed-bias when in Class AB. It switches to cathode-bias when in Class A. Pentode: the power output tube is a 5-electrode object (cathode, control grid, screen grid, suppressor grid and anode/plate). In the DT50, when you select “Pentode” mode, you’re operating the EL34’s as pentode tubes. Triode: a mode of operation where the power tube has 3 active elements (cathode, control grid and the anode/plate). Setting the front panel control switch of the DT50 to “Triode” alters the behavior of the EL34’s to act more like a triode, which reduces the power output and affects the high end as well. Negative Feedback Loop (NFL): a certain amount of the amplifier’s output is fed back into the amp to reduce distortion and increase headroom. A higher amount of NFL results in a tighter response overall, which some guitarists may be seeking in their tone. A lesser amount of NFL can make the amp feel more “wild” and “unruly”, which can be also desirable to many guitarists. It depends on what you’re after and the context of what you’re after, musically-speaking. Tonestack: the EQ-region inside of an amp where the Bass, Mid and Treble controls live. Sag: the response of the amp to what is being played on the electric guitar, usually heard at the beginning of playing a note or chord that follows a rest. Sag will cause the amp to get a bit quieter, while also causing more distortion.   8. This document explains how to update the flash memory of the Spider Valve Mk II using the FBV Mk II and Line 6 Monkey on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Mac OSX 10.4.11, 10.5.8 and 10.6.x. Before you get started, you will need to have your Spider Valve Mk II connected to the FBV Mk II (Express or Shortboard) using a CAT-5 cable, and you will need to have your FBV Mk II unit connected to an open USB port on the back of your computer (do not use a USB hub). Be sure that your computer is connected to the internet. 1) Run Line 6 Monkey and you will be asked which unit you want to work with. Highlight the Spider Valve Mk II unit and select 'OK'. 2) Highlight 'flash memory' (it will turn blue), then select 'update selection'. 3) Select 'Yes' to continue. 4) Select "I Accept" for the software agreement and select 'continue'. 5) Select 'Yes' to update the Flash memory. Do not run any other programs or disconnect the cables while performing the update. 6) Allow the unit to go through the update process. This can take 5-10 minutes. 7) Select 'OK' when the update is finished. 8) You will see a green check mark in front of flash memory to show it is now up to date. Note: If you are having difficulty getting the Spider Valve Mk II to update, you can start the amp in "boot mode" by powering the unit up while holding the "Manual" and "B" buttons.

If you are having trouble with your Line 6 amplifier, please check the following points before taking your amplifier to your local Authorized Service Center: Q: I am noticing that I am getting volume/tone changes when playing at a high volume? A: Try "parking" the knobs (except master volume) at 100% to ensure that the knobs are not moving to the "current" location rather than the preset location. Recall a preset once the knobs are parked to ensure the tone you are working with is a preset rather than the current knob position. Q: My master volume has almost no change past 6? A: This is due to the volume pot installed on all Line 6 amplifiers. A solution to this would be to replace it with an "audio" pot, but this modification wouldn't make it louder - just smoother. Line 6 originally installed audio pots on the AXSYS, but players didn't like them because they made the amp feel "wimpy". Players also did not like the fact that they had to turn the amp up to about 4-5 before it would start "happening" and 7-8 on the gig. Even though there was still a good amount of headroom, player feedback was that they preferred the amplifier with the traditional volume pot, so that is the style used with Line 6 amplifiers. - Perform a factory reset of the unit: Factory Reset Procedures Volume and Signal Troubleshooting - turn off other volume controls not being used (i.e. volume trim pots) - Ensure there is no debris in the CAT-5 or input jacks. - Unplug all other units from the audio chain, as well as any CAT-5 cables and controllers. - Use a high-quality cable you know is functional (i.e. works in a different application) directly into the instrument input, bypassing all other effect units. - Ensure that the guitar/bass is outputting signal. Try the amplifier with another instrument you know is functional (if possible).Make sure all the input and output jacks are tight. Check the instrument with different pickup settings to make sure it is not a bad pickup connection. - Ensure that both the positive (white) and negative (black or red) wires are fully connected to the speaker, and that the speaker output from the amplifier is plugged into the correct jack (when applicable). - Check the effects loop (if the amp has one). If you're not getting any signal, try plugging into the RETURN side of the loop to see if there is any output. Likewise, with a source feeding the input, plug the SEND into another line level device to see if you're getting signal. Tone and Rattle Troubleshooting - Check the make sure all buttons on the unit are not stuck - Be sure that all screws on the unit (handle, corners, baffle boards, speakers) are snug. - Ensure that there are no foreign objects (i.e. silicon packs) stuck in the speaker enclosures Q: Are the tone controls on the on a Line 6 amplifier passive or active, and where is the "flat" level? A: Each amp model is different, and the controls behaves like the target amp. Most tube amplifiers will have a passive tone stack with makeup gain. Line 6 tone stacks are designed to behave just like the modeled amp (both the good and the not so good). Some amplifier tone stacks are the closest to flat when set B-0, M-10, T-0, but it is different for each model. Power Troubleshooting - Ensure that there is sufficient power coming from the power outlet into the amplifier. Try a different circuit to ensure there is not a power issue at the outlet. - Make sure that the both ends of the power cable are snug in their sockets. Tube Amplifiers Troubleshooting - Make sure the tube is firmly seated in the tube socket. - If the tube(s) make a popping sound accompanied by intermittent light from tubes, the tube is failing and needs to be replaced. - If there is "white frost" inside the tube, the tube has cracked and it must be replaced. - If there is a "tube" ringing (not due to loose screws), there may be a failing tube. Replace the 12AX7s individually and the matched 6L6 pairs to determine if a tube has failed. Replacing Tubes - Always replace power amp tubes with matched set(s) every 12-24 months depending on the amount of use, and have the bias checked and/or adjusted by an authorized Line 6 Service Center. - Preamp tubes (such as the two 12AX7s) only need to be replaced when they are microphonic (ringing sound from tubes when tapped), noisy, or damaged. Replacing tubes should be done a Line 6 authorized service center. The digital stage and analog tube stages communicate with one another, and so are not like the all analog tube (valve) amps from the 1960's and 70's. As a result, one cannot swap tubes out like in the old days. So please use the following specified tubes (valves) when the amp is taken to a service center. For Spider Valve series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7B China for pre-amps. 5881WXT Sovtek (matched pair), with the base cup bottom. 5881WXT Sovtek (matched quartet), with the base cup bottom for the HD-100 and HD100 MkII. For the Alchemist series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7EH Electro-Harmonix low microphonic for V1-3 pre-amp positions. 12AX7AC5HG Ruby Tube HG-High Gain for V4. 12AX7B China for V5. 6L6GCMSTR Ruby Tube (matched pair) power amp. For the DT50 series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7EH Electro-Harmonix approved for the DT50 pre-amps. EL34EH Electro-Harmonix (matched pairs) for the power amps. For the DT25 series amps use the following specified tubes, 12AX7EH Electro-Harmonix approved for the DT25 pre-amps. EL84EH Electro-Harmonix (matched pairs) for the power amps. Visit your local Line 6 Service Center for servicing a tube amp, as these have High Voltage Shock Hazards. There are several parameters of the AX2 User preset that must be adjusted properly for this to be implemented. Here are the settings: Reverb row / reverb level set to 0 Main row / Delay/reverb knob set to 90. Wah row / wah type set to 5.18. Wah row / wah depth set to 99. Increasing the Reverb row / reverb level setting will adjust the wah pedal minimum reverb level. Decreasing the Wah row / wah depth setting will adjust the wah pedal maximum reverb level. Q: How can I make my own personal patches? A: To make a custom set up of factory patches, simply call up the patch you want, hit "save" (the display will flash), then use the "Bank up/Down" and "Channel select" buttons to choose the location you want that patch to be in. There is also an AX2 MIDI sysex document that details all of the functions that can be controlled using external MIDI controllers. Q: How can I get a good direct output from my AX2/Axsys? A: Unlike the Flextone, where the speaker compensation is done in the analog world, the AX2/Axsys cabinet emulation is done in the digital world. Because of this, when the speaker emualtion is on, it is going to be present in the direct outs as well as the speaker outs. For AX2/Axsys users, one solution can be to use a pair of analog boxes (like a Hughes & Kettner Red Box or a Digital Music Cab Tone Dual) to feed the PA in live situations and then use the AX2/Axsys compensated direct out for recording purposes only. There is another inexpensive and simple solution to the line out/speaker compensation issue. Many users find that when the speaker compensation is activated, the sound of the AX2/Axsys speaker is not objectionable but simply too dark (there needs to be more treble in the sound) while the amps direct out sounds great through the PA. It is possible to simply feed a little of the direct sound through your vocal monitor and then have some of the low end rolled off. You can achieve this by "Y'ing" the AX2/Axsys direct output into two mixer channel line inputs and using the second channel to EQ your personal monitor feed. This allows you to use the first mixer channel to send the full range AX2/Axsys direct sound through the main house sound system. Then, send the separately EQ'ed sound from the second mixer channel to your vocal monitor. The sound that comes through your vocal monitor is "tinny", but when it gets mixed in with the "bassy" sound of the AX2/Axsys speakers, the resulting sound is pretty well balanced. You may also find that there is also an added depth to the sound similar to running a bi-amped bass guitar rig. You can also apply this concept of Y'ing the direct out to connect to another amplifier other than your vocal monitor. You can use another combo amp or a "Hot Spot" type monitor. You may also find that adding external effects to the "monitor" feed gives you some extra sound processing possibilities. Q: It is possible to control the delay level of the AX2 with the wah pedal of the Line6 floorboard? A: There are several parameters of the AX2 User preset that must be adjusted properly for this to be implemented. Here are the settings: Delay row / delay level set to 0 Main row / Delay/reverb knob set to 90. Wah row / wah type set to 5.12. Wah row / wah depth set to 99. Increasing the Delay row / delay level setting will adjust the wah pedal minimum delay level. Decreasing the Wah row / wah depth setting will adjust the wah pedal maximum delay level. Set up Q: If I only run one speaker on the amp (AX2 212 upgrade) Will I still get the full stereo signal (i.e. the rhythm of the delay will be the same)? If I DI the AX with a mono cable into the PA will I also get stereo delay in a mono? A: You will get only 1/2 of the signal from the amp if you run one speaker. You will still get stereo out of the direct output. You will get mono out of the amp if you use a mono cable. It can be a complicated matter to run a direct output from an amplifier to a live sound system and simultaneously monitor that amplifier's internal speakers on stage. The issue of the cabinet emulation on the AX2 is somewhat more complex than it looks at first glance, since unlike the Flextone, where the speaker compensation is actually done in the analog world, on the AX2 it's done in the digital world and, because of hardware limitations, can't be both present (at the direct out) and not present (at the speakers) at the same time. To do so would require adding additional A/D conversion and a divergent data path, neither of which is a software solution, or an inexpensive, ungradable hardware change. The AX2 design was never intended to have both in simultaneous use. Was it a bad design decision? Maybe, but hindsight is always 20/20, and all of our products are being used in ways that transcend their original design, for good or ill. For AX2 users, one solution can be to use a pair of analog boxes (For example, I have a H&K Red Box and a Digital Music CabTone Dual-lok'd to the inside of my AX2 cabinet) to feed the PA in live situations and use the compensated direct out only for recording purposes. Not the most elegant solution, but a very usable and portable one. There is another cheap and simple solution to the line out/speaker compensation issue. Many users find that the sound of the AX2 speakers, when speaker compensation is activated, is not objectionable, but is simply too dark. There needs to be much more treble in the sound. The direct out sounds great through the PA. You can simply feed a little of the direct sound through your vocal monitor. Have the low end rolled off my personal monitor sound. (you can achieve this EQ setting by "Y'ing" the AX2 direct output into two mixer channel line inputs and using this second channel only to EQ your personal monitor feed). This allows you to use the first mixer channel to send the full range AX2 direct sound through the main house sound system and to other players' vocal monitors. We realize that this solution is not superior to having separate control of all AX2 amp outputs, but it works without having to spend the extra money on external speaker emulation devices. We hope this solution gives you one more option that may help you get a better monitor sound, in some situations. You may also be able to apply this concept of Y'ing the direct out to others amplifiers than your vocal monitor. You might be able to use another combo amp or a "Hot Spot" type monitor. You may also find that adding external effects to "monitor" feed gives some extra sound processing possibilities. Q: Can the AX2/Axsys power an external speaker cabinet? A: Yes, an external cabinet can be connected to the AX2/Axsys by disconnecting the existing Axsys speakers and connecting the extension cabinet. The speaker outputs of the AX2/Axsys must be connected to an 8ohm or 16ohm load. Do not use a 4ohm load, as it will cause the amp to overheat. Q: How do I record with the AX2/Axsys line out? A: The LINE OUT/HEADPHONE jack of the AX2/Axsys is a stereo output so we suggest that you use a "Stereo TRS" (Tip/Ring/Sleeve) jack to take advantage of the stereo output. A TRS jack is basically a stereo jack much like the jack on the end of your stereo headphones. You can use a mono or guitar cable in the LINE OUT/HEADPHONE output but you will only get one side of the stereo field. Set the Master Volume at 2-1/2 or lower to get a line level output that won't overdrive your mixer input. Remember that you can unplug the AX2 speakers when recording so that you don't have to have the amp playing in the room. If you need to have the amp playing in the room at a higher volume than 2-1/2, you may need to use an external 20 dB pad to bring the level of the signal going to the mixer back down to a usable level. See page 5*15 in the AX2 manual for more details Q: Can I adjust the STEREO LINE OUT/HEADPHONE level of my AX2/Axsys? A: In order to have the desired AX2/Axsys stage volume but not overdrive the input of the mixer, an external 20dB pad can be placed between the LINEOUT of the AX2/Axsys and the input of the mixer. Most mixing consoles already have a 20dB pad built in, but if necessary, an inexpensive outboard unit can be purchased. Rolls manufactures one called the DB25 Matchbox. It doubles as a direct box and a pad and should work great in this situation. Specifications Q: Is the Aux input on the AX2 unbalanced mono or stereo? A: The Aux input of the AX2 is unbalanced mono. The mono sound will be sent to both sides of the stereo output. Troubleshooting Q: How do I reset the Axsys/AX2? A: The factory reset for the Axsys 212 or AX2 is to hold down the USER PRESET and the SAVE (or STORE SOUND) buttons. Q: I have been getting a loud noise when switching from preset 01 on channel "A"? A: Please try a hard reset of your AX2/Axsys. Q: I am receiving a "lo batt" error message. What should I do? A: This message is an indication that the battery is not going to be with us much longer. We use lithium batteries in the AX2/Axsys in order to store the user presets, a common replacement is the Panasonic BR2325-1HG. The current battery will need to be de-soldered and replaced with a new battery. If you are not confident in doing this replacement, it should be performed by an authorized Line 6 Service Center. Q: I'm having a hard time getting my clean sounds really clean on my AxSys/AX2. Is there something that I can try? A: Always remember that there are many different places where you can increase or decrease gain on the AX2/AxSys. If you've chosen to increase it in all (or even most) of these places, you could be causing clipping after the TubeTone modeling. One of the most likely places for this to happen is in the Graphic EQ. A quick test is to turn the EQ off and see if your sound cleans up. If it does, move your whole EQ curve down so that your highest frequency boosts are no higher than +6. A general troubleshooting procedure to find where you might be getting unwanted clipping is to turn off all the effects, make sure that the sound is clean, then turn the effects back on, one at a time, checking for clipping after turning on each one. Q: I just upgraded to AX2 and my presets are changing radically every time I touch a knob. What's going on? A: The AX2 defaults to an 'immediate' editing mode in which the sound will instantly reflect the knob settings (i.e. when you change a knob, the sound changes immediately). You're used to the older 'capture' mode editing of the AxSys 212, where you had to move a knob to the position of its stored setting before you could change the setting. You can put the AX2 into the older editing mode by holding down the Main Row Edit Select button while powering up the amp. This setting is stored with the other Global settings, and you'll never have to think about it again unless you do a reset of the amp. (See page 2-2 of the manual) Q: I turned up the Delay/Reverb level in the Main Row, but I don't hear any reverb or delay? A: Make sure that the Delay and/or Reverb is turned on in the FX On/Off Edit Row or at the Floor Board. Still nothing? Remember that the individual Delay and Reverb Level controls in their respective Edit Rows have to be turned up as well. Q: The Axsys amplifier may make a crashing noise when switching between two presets that have Reverb or Delay on them? A: The Axsys amplifier may make a crashing noise when switching between two presets that have Reverb or Delay on them. The Axsys may also make a crashing noise when switching from a preset that uses the Acoustic Simulator to a preset that uses a non-Acoustic Simulator amp model with Reverb or Delay. There are several things that can be done to eliminate or minimize this noise. If the presets that are selected do not have any Reverb or Delay on them, the noise will be eliminated. It is possible to have Reverb or Delay pre-programmed into a preset but have the effects turned off. Then, after the preset has been selected using the EFFECTS ON/OFF foot switch function to activate the Reverb or Delay. This will eliminate switching noises at the time of the preset change. It is also possible to program the presets to minimize any noises that may occur during switching. The "SPRING" reverb model is the most likely to cause noises. Using another reverb model such as "DARK HALL" will lower the level of the noise. Maintaining a similar "reverb level" on the presets that are selected will also help to minimize this switching noise. There are three parameters that adjust the "reverb level" on the Axsys. The REVERB ON/OFF setting in the FX ON/OFF row, the REVERB LEVEL setting in the REVERB row and the REVERB/DELAY setting in the MAIN row. Q: Why is it that when the Axsys receives "MIDI program change messages", it will remain in the PRESET BANK or USER BANK it is set to at the time that the message is received? A: The Axsys will receive "MIDI program changes" via its MIDI IN jack and then follow with the preset changes outlined on page 10.4 of the Axsys owners manual. When the Axsys receives a "MIDI program change message" it will remain in the PRESET BANK or USER BANK it is set to at the time that the message is received. The Axsys will need to receive a "MIDI bank change message" in order to scroll to a different BANK. To toggle between the USER and PRESET BANKs, the user must press the USER/PRESET button on the front panel of the Axsys. Many MIDI foot controllers proceed their program change commands with bank change information. This is especially common in Roland controllers. This function will need to be defeated for these controllers to work properly with a Line6 product. Q: My amp seems to be malfunctioning and I have done the factory reset and checked the amp trouble shooting document. What can I do as an end user? Line 6 Amp Trouble Shooting Q: When I change to my acoustic simulator sound from a distortion I get a loud sound? A: That noise that you're hearing is the sound of the Reverb and/or Delay trailing off from the electric guitar amp model and being amplified by the acoustic model at the time you're making the switch. The acoustic models have a lot more gain applied to them than the electric models. This is done so that the level between the acoustic modeler and the electric modeler are more closely matched. To avoid that frying pan sound, you may need to compromise the Reverb and/or Delay on the electric sound; basically turn it off. You can either program the electric sound with no Reverb or Delay, or you can turn the Reverb and/or Delay off via the Floor Board a few seconds before you switch to the acoustic sound. You may have to experiment to see how long it takes for the Reverb/Delay to "finish" before it's safe to switch to acoustic. The "discharging" time will be different for different lengths of Reverbs and Delays. Q: Can I still get the AXSys/AX2 EPROM upgrade? A: No, as the AXsys/AX2 EPROM is no longer readily available on the commercial market. Q: Can I still get the AXSys/AX2 Line 6 cover?
