  1. Hey everyone, I've been doing some digging on how to replicate the drive tone that can be found on the TWEEZ setting of the Tube Echo preset on the DL4. I'd like to have the original source pedal for this and Line 6 mentions this is Maestro EP-1 with its tube electronics and tape saturation giving the "drive". Knowing that the EP-1 is more of an echo unit and isn't really a pedal, is there a drive pedal that best represents this tube echo drive? I looked into the Xotic EP Booster but that mimics the tape saturation of the E-3 which doesn't have tubes. Would the BK Butler Tube Driver do the trick?
  2. I know I can copy them to my computer and save them that way. What I'm wondering it has a function like the Boss RC pedals that allow saving many loops at the same time, and to recall them by number.
  3. Brand new mkii, loving all the updates and features. I’m attempting to setup a few presets - writing over the factory presets with different patches. I’m doing this with the expression pedal unplugged and getting the patch dialed in perfectly (have not yet assigned any parameters to the exp yet). I plug in the exp pedal in, follow the instructions in the manual exactly, but the pedal is already changing parameters I didn’t touch (like tweak and tweez, which I don’t want assigned to the exp). What is most frustrating is the exp pedal is resetting my TEMPO to the saved tempo. I can leave the exp pedal parked and tap a new tempo, but as soon as I touch the exp pedal the tempo reverts. Again, this is after dialing in a fresh patch, and trying to start “from scratch.” Any help would be appreciated.
  4. The microSD card must be either the SDHC or SDXC type, 4 GB or larger capacity, and initially formatted by DL4 MkII before it is functional with the Looper. Before using the MicroSD card for longer loops, it will first need to be formatted for the device. Once formatted, your card must include no other existing files on it (other than DL4 MkII’s own Looper- created data). The best idea is to just purchase or dedicate a microSD card exclusively for DL4 MkII use (and, since the Looper will only ever utilize 4 GB, it’s not necessary to use a large capacity card). The process for doing the initial format of your MicroSD card is as follows: WARNING: This process may erase any files you have stored on your MicroSD card. 1. Power on and turn your DL4 MkII’s Selector knob to LOOPER. Be sure the Looper is stopped (not actively recording or playing a loop). 2. Press and hold the ALT/LEGACY button while inserting your MicroSD card into the slot on the back of DL4 MkII. 3. Once the card is fully seated in the slot, release the ALT/LEGACY button when you see its LED start flashing through different colors. DO NOT power off or touch any controls on DL4 MkII while you see the LED flashing, which lasts only a few seconds. 4. When the ALT/LEGACY button’s LED stops flashing, the formatting process is complete. You can then use your microSD card with the Classic Looper or 1 Switch Looper!
  5. DL4 MkII FAQ What’s the deal with DL4 MkII? DL4 MkII is a modern interpretation of our best-selling legendary DL4 delay modeler. If you love(d) your DL4, DL4 MkII can be made to sound and behave the same way with a single button press. Or if you want Line 6’s newest delays and features, we’ve got you covered as well. Okay, but DL4 was a piece of cake to use. Is DL4 MkII much more difficult? If you want to keep it simple, here’s everything you need to know: Press the LEGACY button so it’s lit green. There—DL4 MkII literally becomes DL4 so you can party like it’s 1999. Press LEGACY again so it’s dark. Now you have Line 6’s newest world-class delays: Heliosphere, Transistor Tape, Cosmos Echo, Multi Pass, Adriatic Delay, Elephant Man, Glitch Delay, Vintage Digital, Crisscross, Euclidean, Dual Delay, Pitch Echo, ADT (Automatic Double Tracking), Ducked Delay, and Harmony Delay. Or you could just watch the Quickstart video. But if you’re a power user, there are quite a few surprises lurking inside. Oh, I’m a power user. How is DL4 MkII different from DL4? 15 of our newest, best-sounding delays, plus Echo Platter from the Line 6 Echo Pro rackmount studio modeler Better-quality converters and op amps, and improved dynamic range Analog dry path (or DSP mix, like the original) Multiple bypass modes: DSP bypass, true analog bypass, buffered analog bypass, or dry kill Twice the max delay time for MkII delays XLR mic in with preamp for processing/looping vocals or mic’ed amps MicroSD card slot for expanding looper memory and maintaining the loop across power cycles Eight times the built-in looper memory (4 minutes mono half-speed vs. DL4’s 28 seconds) The looper can be set mono or stereo and pre or post-effects Each delay’s Time parameter can be set to subdivisions without fancy rhythmic tapping Selecting a different delay no longer stops the looper. In fact, if you’ve assigned the 1 Switch Looper to TAP, you can switch to the 4 Switch Looper (or any delay or any preset) and recording/playback isn’t interrupted Up to 6 presets (128 blank user presets via MIDI) vs. DL4’s 3 Globally switchable bypass trails (echoes repeat when bypassing the delay) Two additional footswitches can be connected and assigned to external tap tempo, one-touch parameter morph, looper on/off, or feedback squeals. TAP can be repurposed as many of the above, plus preset bank toggle and a 1 Switch Looper available alongside any of the delays Tap can be set per preset or global Tap can now be engaged while DL4 is bypassed MIDI In and Out/Thru—presets can be selected via PC and functions via CC or even MIDI notes from your keyboard/pad controller/electronic drum kit Delays sync to incoming MIDI Clock USB C for MIDI and potential firmware updates DC In requires less than 300mA power, making it much easier to integrate pedalboard power distribution (we ditched the batteries) Chassis is notably lighter, smaller, and sleeker. See below for a size comparison Weren't some of these new features available for DL4 via the mod community? Yes. How much smaller is it compared to DL4? DL4 MkII is about 1” narrower and about 1.5” less deep (9.25"w x 4.5"d x 2"h/23.5 x 11.4 x 5.1 cm; 2.03 lb/0.92 kg). Switch and knob spacing is virtually identical, however, so muscle memory shouldn’t fail you. Here’s a size comparison: Why didn’t you make it even smaller, like with two or three switches? Because then it’d be a DL2 or DL3—not a DL4. Nor is it an “HX Delay” or something; it’s very purposely a MkII. Besides, unless you wear ballerina slippers on stage, a 4-switch pedal can only be so narrow. How reliable are the footswitches? They’re the same ones found in POD Go and POD Go Wireless and have been extensively stress tested. How long can I loop? Without a memory card, 4 minutes mono (half-speed), which disappears when you turn DL4 MkII off. With an optional microSD memory card, however, the loop remains in memory across power cycles. 4GB or larger cards let you record for hours. What’s the USB for? Duplicate MIDI control, syncing tempo to a DAW, potential bug fixes, and maybe new future stuff. We don’t know yet. Is there an editor? Not currently, no, but there are only 9 parameters, so… What is the sample rate/fidelity for the looper? 16-bit/48kHz Man, the power user stuff sounds pretty deep, and I don’t see a screen. What gives? While in Global Settings, you turn the model select knob to select the parameter and press ALT/Legacy repeatedly to select the desired value by color. These are all pretty much set-and-forget type settings, so they only need to be set once—or never, if you trust our defaults. The end of this video walks you through a few examples. How deep is the MIDI implementation? On top of recalling 128 blank user presets via PC messages, all effect selection, preset parameters, and looper functions can be controlled via CC. If you’re a keyboard player, you can even trigger looper functions from key presses or pad strikes on your MIDI controller. Here’s the manual; MIDI implementation starts on page 49. Can DL4 MkII run on batteries? No. DL4 MkII is powered by a DC-1g power supply (included). Can I power DL4 MkII from my DC power block? Most likely. DL4 MkII requires at least 300mA of clean 9VDC. How do I reset the DL4 MkII? Should you ever wish to restore the factory presets—and erase the sounds you might have saved in any of the 128 preset locations—you can perform a Factory Restore. 1. Press and hold both the A and TAP footswitches while connecting the power adapter to the DC IN. 2. Continue to hold the switches for approximately 8 seconds, until you see the green LEDs light up. Your DL4 MkII device is restored with all factory presets and original default global settings. WAIT. You said it has every delay from DL4. What happened to the Rhythmic Delay? Nice catch. Rhythmic Delay was always identical to Digital Delay w/ Mod, except with the ability to set note subdivisions. Since DL4 MkII lets you apply note subdivisions to any delay, Rhythmic Delay was completely redundant, so we swapped it for Echo Platter (based on the Binson EchoRec) from our rackmount Echo Pro. Anything else? You may or may not discover 15 hidden reverbs, one of which can run before, after, or in parallel with the delay. We may or may not have hidden them because you sort of need the Cheat Sheet to know how to access and tweak them. Can I still do that cool thing where an expression pedal automatically morphs the 5 knobs? Of course, but it now morphs the reverb knobs as well. Or if you don't have an expression pedal, you can reassign TAP (or an external footswitch) to toggle between heel-down and toe-down. My DL4 MkII is a little noisy. Anything I should check for? It's probably that the mic trim knob is turned up. If you turn it down and there's still noise, try different patches and settings. If it's still noisy across all patches, reduce your chain to the bare minimum for testing: instrument>DL4 MkII>amp. If the noise is still present, try to isolate the noise source by substituting cables, instruments and amp. Is the classic DL4 going away then? <Pours one out> Sadly, some of DL4’s parts have been discontinued, so yes, when they’re gone, they’re gone. 23 years is an eternity for any single product in this industry. I mean, DL4 is old enough to get into bars. Price and availability? $299.99 US street, shipping now.
  6. Hi - I expect this has already been answered somewhere but I have been unable to locate the answer. I recently reset my DL4 back to factory defaults. Then I dialed in a delay that I wanted. I only want to use that delay on one phrase in the performance, so most of the time, I have pressed the A pedal to bypass the delay (i.e. turn it off - indicator light is out). When I click the A pedal again to turn on the delay I dialed in, the DL4 goes to a tap tempo that I did not set, and I have to turn the delay time knob or something else to get what I dialed in back. This happens every time - I don't recall this happening before. What might I be doing wrong?

    DL4 or HD500?

Hi guys - any that are still using these dinosaurs! :) I have two HD500 modellers, and haven't been using either of them with any regularity for quite a while now. I'm considering buying a DL4 (delay modeller), and after watching Bill Frisell showing how he still gets great use out of that piece of gear after years of going through other failing pedals, I wonder if the Pod HD500 can be set up to loop, etc in the same way that the DL4 does, to be brought in and out of play. I'm sure I could do hours of research, and still not really know what I want to know, without actually buying a DL4, to ascertain whether I actually need it or not, to do that kind of usage of time/pitch change, loop reversal kind of stuff. I love it, but wouldn't know how to go about it on the HD500. Does anybody use their HD500 in the same kind of way that Bill Frisell does here? Is it possible, or does DL4 have different capabilities?
  8. My DL4 has developed a strange issue on the ping pong setting only. It sounds like the repeats have a super saturated wow/flutter/trem distortion sort of sound on them. I've cleaned all the pots and switches, all solder joints seem fine. could it be the firmware eprom? It's very strange that every other setting is working perfectly. Cheers.
  9. Q: How come my DL4 pedal says “9V AC” for Power Requirements, but the DC-DL4’s output is rated 12V DC? A: The DL4 was originally designed to be battery powered, or to optionally be powered by the Line 6 PX-2G power supply (which was a 9V AC output). Due to Level VI power supply efficiency requirements in North America, the PX-2G was discontinued in North America. However, the DL4, as well as the DM4, MM4, FM4 and AM4 stompboxes, can also work with a center-positive 12V DC supply, such as the DC-DL4 power supply.
  10. Does anyone know how to determine the date of manufacture with Line 6 DL4's? I have two that I'm looking to find out about.
  11. The labels are sold in the US on our web shop. Otherwise, your area's distributor can order them under part number 40-25-0044. The enclosed file can be used to print them.
  12. I recently sold my old DL4, and the guy who bought is is starting to have issues with it. I wanted to see if anyone here had any input on what may be going on, as some of the power requirements for it are a little odd. I always used mine with a Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2+. So, the red connector, which I think is positive center. Voodoo says those outlets are rated at 9V DC @ 250ma, or 12v DC @ 200ma with the dip switch on. The L6 PSU is 9v AC @ 2000ma, with the back of the pedal having a 9V AC @ 1200ma minimum printed on it. Now, I never had a SINGLE problem with it. It always worked flawlessly. I can't remember whether I had the PP2 in 9v or 12v, though. However, with batteries, wouldn't that only produce a 6V DC current? 4x C cell batteries, right? So, does anyone have any idea of the overall power tolerances for these things? I'm seeing a lot of different numbers here, and that pedal always served me well (I'd still have it if I didn't have a Helix now). So, I want to see if I can give the guy who bought it some advice. I've already reached out to a couple of guys that work with Line 6, but figured the community would also have some good input. (You guys usually do!)
  13. I own a Line 6 Dl4 that I run in front of my amplifier with some other effects such as a noise gate, tubescreamer, reverb. I use a couple delays on each preset of the Dl4. I'm running into a problem where when I turn off these delays I use as presets on the Dl4, they won't turn OFF. The delays hang around and create unwanted feedback and hiss when I turned the preset OFF and want to continue playing the guitar without an effect. Does anyone know of a potential fix for this? I'm going to bring it into Guitar Center today but due to the price of this pedal, I'm not sure if the repair costs would be worth it. Thoughts?
  14. Hi. I just bought the DL4 delay modeller and I have to say I am pretty happy with the quality of the sound. It sounds so great with my Marshal Valve Amp and either my Les Paul or my PRS SE with active pickups. The tonal qualities are awesome. I've read the manual and looked at some youtube vids. I have a pretty good idea how it works. I know you can save any setting into one of the three switches (A,B and C) by holding the switch down and I know how to reset it back to the factory setting but it doesn't tell you in the manual what they come set to as default. What are A, B and C (and D?) set to in the factory default? Can switch D also be used to save a preset? Thanks, Dave
  15. Hi, I'm trying to use a DL4 with my clavia nord electro keyboards. The DL4 sits on my keys and I'm adjusting the effect settings and the tap tempo with one hand while playing the keys with the other hand (while let's say switch "A" is activated). Next I want to play something "clean" (i.e. without delay effect) and simply hit switch "A" to >True Bypass< the device. Now after some time I want to reactivate the DL4 again and want to resume with the effect settings that were in place before going to bypass (i.e. delay time, repeats etc. as I had set them while playing before going to clean sound). Could anyone tell me how this can possibly be done (i.e. simply deactivate the "bypass" mode)? Hitting "A" again simply re-calls the preset stored under that button which obviously now is completely different from the current knob settings ... (overwriting the user preset with the current knob settings everytime before going to clean does not make sense for me...) Or is this simply not possible with the DL4? Thanks! Gunnar
  16. I own a DL4...I am looking into new power supplies for my board. Will the Strymon Zuma power supply be able to handle the DL4? (Each port on the Zuma is capable of producing 500mA 9V and two ports with 9V, 12V, and 18V options all at 500mA.) Here is the link for the Zuma: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Zuma
  17. Hello forum I am looking for help on issues with my DL4. I know this is for the JM4, but if someone can help or offer advice where to seek help it would be appreciated. I recently got my DL4. After experimenting with the loop sampler using my micro korg - i realized after recording a loop, the sampled loop will slowly fade out... eventually to no sound at all. This cant be normal for this device?/ What is there to do about this? Thanks- kk
  18. Hey all, I recently purchased a DL4 but it doesen't have any of the stickers or decals on it- the knobs are unaccompanied by the names of their functions nor does the preset knob have any labelled presets. I was wondering if there was a way to obtain these stickers or decals. Thank you!
  19. What's the component value of the R32 resistor right about SW4? Had a bit of a boo-boo when replacing a footswitch. Thanks!
  20. Having a problem with a DL4 that I recently purchased. I've attached a recording to this post (the recording is clipping a tiny bit, apologies for that). Basically when I switch any delay on, the guitar signal gets cut very briefly and then comes back with delay, instead of just carrying on with added delay. You can hear it happening 3 times on the recording I've attached, every time I release the switch to trigger the delay. Has that ever happened to any of you ? Any thoughts ? Line 6 - signal cut.mp3 Thanks in advance Greg
  21. Hello, I am trying to get the guitar sound found in the beginning of this video: using a Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler. It seems to be a Reverse Delay sound, but I can't quite seem to get that sound. Mainly I can't seem to control when the sound starts and ends. Is this a sound the DL4 is capable of making? Could someone help me find the right settings to be able to play this? Thanks ahead of time.
  22. Hello Line6 Community. I need help with regards to my Line6 POD 2.0. I'm wondering if I can mimic the "multi-head" effect of the DL4 using my POD. If yes, how to tweak the settings of my POD manually to create that effect. (i dont use the sound editor). To fully-understand what I mean, please refer to the video at 01:48. . . Please advice. Thank you.
  23. Hey, so my DL4 cut out the other day and I've opened it up to find that batteries have exploded and leaked acid all through the pedal. The circuit is pretty burnt and it won't start at all. I've only ever run it off a line 6 official power supply. And am always super careful with the unit. Has anyone else had any problems like this? Also, being based outside of Europe, or the USA. There is no number or emailing address for me to get in contact with line 6 about the issue. If anyone could shed some light on where I can get in communication about customer support, that would be fantastic! Love the DL4, I just want to get it revived :(
  24. I just purchased my DL4 delay pedal and every time I turn it on my tone dies, my volume drops and my high end gets dull as can be. I spent $275 on this pedal and adapter so I would really like some suggestions on how to make it not suck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a really nice handmade tube amp and every other pedal sounds amazing through it. thanks for your time.
  25. I am currently using my second DL4, it is the best delay pedal I have come across when it actually works. My first one was fine for about a year then (just after my warranty was up) it started to behave oddly. Often the sound would cut out mid song (it would work on bypass, or the power would just cut out. sometimes it would come straight back on other times it didn't come back on, but often it would work again then next time I tried to use it (a few days later). Since it was out of warranty I bought another one, this one was fine for a while, then it started having similar problems, I took it back to where I bought it and they sent it to line6 for repair, I got it back a couple of weeks ago with a note stating the repair work they did - which seemed to be only cleaning an eprom socket. It took over a month to get this done and sent back to me and it has already started going wrong again. I have been using an official line6 power supply with it, so the power isn't an issue. I can't afford to have this die on me in the middle of a gig again, the loop and delay functions are important parts of our sound. Is this a problem I can expect to have with all line6 delays? I see a lot of professional musicians using them so I can only assume they must actually work for some people. I don't want this to continue happening as I have already spent close to £400 on these pedals and currently have 2 which are very unreliable. I am worried that it will continue to happen and cause me further issues. Does anyone have any advice, or is it just send it back to them (which I have already tried). It's really quite frustrating, a pedal that costs that much money should be much more reliable. I have several much cheaper pedals (including a very cheap digital delay) which have never gone wrong following several years of gigging. Any help would be appreciated!
