1. Helix/HX 3.80 (released November 19, 2024) includes 6 new amps, 4 new cabs, 1 new effect, and bug fixes and is strongly recommended for all users of Helix and HX. How do I update to 3.80? (except HX One) Updating Helix/HX Hardware With Helix/HX connected to your computer, launch HX Edit 3.82 (3.01 or higher), and make sure you're signed in. HX Edit knows when a new update is available and will walk you through the entire update procedure for both hardware and software, including backing up everything to your computer. IMPORTANT! If you're running HX Edit 3.00 or older, download HX Edit 3.82 and repeat step 1. HX Edit 3.82 (macOS): https://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=12926 HX Edit 3.82 (Windows): https://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=12927 If your Helix Floor/Rack/LT is currently running firmware 3.15 or older, halfway through the update to 3.80, Helix's LCD reads "Boot Failure. Entered Update Mode!" THIS IS NORMAL. Breathe deep, everything is fine. You're almost there. HX Edit will display a message indicating the device must be reset. Click resume and wait for the second part of the update to complete. Perform a factory reset. IMPORTANT! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP FIRST, AS A FACTORY RESET WILL ERASE ALL YOUR WORK! Helix Floor/LT: While holding footswitches 9 & 10 (bottom row, 2 middle switches), turn on Helix Floor/LT Helix Rack: While holding knobs 5 & 6 (2 furthest right knobs below the screen), turn on Helix Rack HX Effects: While holding footswitches 6 & TAP (2 farthest right switches on the bottom row), turn on HX Effects HX Stomp: While holding footswitches 2 & 3, turn on HX Stomp HX Stomp XL: While holding footswitches C & D, turn on HX Stomp OPTIONAL: Performing a factory reset loads the new 3.80 Factory Presets, but restoring from your backup will overwrite these. Spend some time exploring these and export the factory presets you want to keep (or drag them to your desktop). If you have unused setlists in Helix Floor/Rack/LT, you can also export the entire FACTORY 1 bundle for loading into an unused setlist later. From the top File menu, select Restore From Backup... If you don't have any important presets in Setlist 1, click the disclosure triangle next to Presets and uncheck the first setlist's box; this will retain 3.80's FACTORY 1 setlist. Select the backup file created in Step 1 and click Restore Backup. If you run into trouble, check out this link. Updating Helix Native Before updating Helix Native, it is highly recommended that you export a preset/setlist bundle. Click the gear icon in the lower left, select the Presets/IRs tab, and then click Export Bundle. Some hardware compatibility modes (HX Stomp, HX Stomp XL, HX Effects) do not have this feature as they have only one setlist. In these cases, at the top of the preset list, click the yellow EXPORT to export the setlist. Quit your DAW and download and install Helix Native 3.82: Helix Native 3.82 (macOS): https://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=12929 Helix Native 3.82 (Windows): https://line6.com/software/readeula.html?rid=12928 Open your DAW and open an instance of Helix Native. OPTIONAL: The only way to hear 3.80's new factory presets is to restore them. IMPORTANT! MAKE SURE YOU'VE EXPORTED A BUNDLE (OR ANY IMPORTANT SETLISTS) FIRST, AS RESTORING FACTORY SETLISTS WILL ERASE ALL YOUR WORK! Click the gear icon in the lower left, select the Presets/IRs tab, and then click Restore Factory Setlists. Click Yes. I updated but why don't I see [Model X] in HX Edit? HX Edit can't magically pull new model names and graphics from your Helix/HX hardware; you must update HX Edit as well (which you would've done had you followed "How do I update to 3.80?" above). My Helix/HX is at version X.XX. Can I go straight to 3.80? Yes, but note that if you're starting from 2.80 or lower, the update may appear to happen three times and will take notably longer than 30 minutes. This is normal. 2. Hi everyone, I’m part of a duo (guitar and drums), and I use my Helix to play both guitar and bass parts simultaneously. Here’s my current setup: 1. I connect my guitar to the Guitar In on the Helix. 2. One output goes to my Marshall JCM 800 amp for the guitar signal. 3. Another output processes the low frequencies and sends them to an Orange Dual Terror amp. This setup works great and allows us to create a full sound. However, I’d like to add a new feature to expand our creative possibilities: using the Looper. The issue I’m facing is: • The Looper only works on one signal path (either guitar or bass). • When I start a loop with the Looper, I lose the live bass or guitar signal, which limits our options. My goal is to find a solution or a routing setup that allows me to record a loop with both the guitar and bass parts at the same time, while still being able to play live over the loop with a riff or melody. Do you have any advice on how to configure this, ideas to optimize my setup, or examples of routing that would work for this configuration? I’m open to any suggestions, even if additional gear is required. Thank you in advance for your help!
3. Hi guys. So, my old Helix from 2017 fried. I mainly used it for a bit of FX, and as a backup for my Engl Powerball 2. It would control all 4 channels via the ext amp out, and in the command center I could assign whatever channel I wanted to any button. The options then were tip, ring, 1 and 2, or None, which equated to each of the 4 channels. I hadn't updated it since ver. 3.0 or something, because I got what I needed from it. So, I finally bought a new one. I updated it immediately. Now, the "None" option is gone from the Control Center Amp Cntrl, and it won't let me switch channels the same way, or at all in Preset nor Snapshot mode. The upper right button (FS6) now reads PRESET/STOMP. I toggle to stomp, then it allows me to toggle through the amp channels. I'm hoping it's a simple fix and user error, but, I'm not a happy camper. Can anyone help? My old one did this with ease. Thanks. I
4. I have made 50 Helix patches, free to download, I thought I'd share: Demo: https://youtu.be/rdeUEojxK_A?si=LVJcx4liah111HC9&t=160 Download here: https://giannichiarello.com/product/modellers-patches/
5. I am trying to get my Helix to use the setup I have tweaked in Powercab edit but I'm not sure how to tell the Helix that there are more than the basic Powercab settings. I suppose I have to link the Helix edit and Powercab edit but I can't seem to find a way to do that. Any help?
6. Hello guys I just built some new tones that took months of work. I think that the Periphery fans are going to enjoy them. This Bass preset is meant to emulate exactly each parallel signal on the Neural DSP Parallax plugin. It also features a custom Impulse Response. Let me know what you think! P.S: I am saying "exactly", because I literally tested every single amp sim on the Fractal and Helix arsenal, until I found the single amp sim that fitted perfectly. https://www.sbtones.com/product-category/helix/
7. Dears, I use Helix with a bass guitar the way I send a signal from Helix to my Ampeg combo (via 6,3 mm jacks; just for a stage - to not depend on the monitors) and to PA (via XLR, cabinet simulation included) and I would like to ask for your suggestions: I would like to purchase a bass amp so I could go for a gig only with the head and use the local cabinet (simply to save some space in a van). I need it only for the power, not to work with sound since it is created directly in Helix and I connect the Helix to the FX loop return so I basically by-pass the EQ etc. I would start on 400 W power. So my idea is some simple (simplier = better) but powerful amp. Would you have any recommendations please? Thank you in advance for your feedback. BR, Kurt Strohschneider
8. Hello. For the last year I've been on and off trying to fix my HX effects unit. I bought it second hand from my guitar tutor and used it for gigs. It was working great, no water damage, no bad sockets or anything. It lost signal during a show and came back, and then did the same thing again. After that it would boot and play completely normal for maybe 30 seconds and then freeze. It did this for a week or so. Then, it got to the point where it won't boot at all. It lights up and the panels shine but no text, no sound, nothing. I tried changing power supplies, all the software. It won't recognize the USB device. So it's essentially bricked. I've watched a ton of videos and tried all the power up combinations. I'm at a loss to be honest. I'd be happy to send it for repair if it was a reasonable price but just some clarity on what else I can do would be great, because I loved playing with this unit. Thanks, Padraic.
9. How do I set up the HX effects signal chain/fx block/mixer for 7cm? I'm struggling! What are the mixer and effects loops settings in the HX effects? Stereo? Dual mono? I'm using two amps, and want to set up so drives go into the front of the amp, and delays/reverbs in the fx loops. Main problems: - I don't know how the signal chain should be configured to set up 7 cable method into the fx loops of two amps. - Because the setup isn't correct, I currently get a lot of noise as both amps are sending the preamp to the other amp! Basically both preamps are blended on each amp. - How do I ensure delays and other effects are stereo - as in ping-pong delay etc. What are the mixer and effects loops settings in the HX effects? Stereo? Dual mono?
10. One of the channels in the headphone output is peaking. Ive tried updating, restarting, different headsets. Still overdrives. Ive tried to use the send output as well.. this does not distort. Similar experience? What can I do? Cheers! Robert
11. Title says: Make FX loop great again. They should! Here is how: Having experiented a bit with the FX loop and trying a lot of things. There is so much wrong with it. You wanna have a FXloop for on of your Gainpedals infront of your digital amp? Noise You wanna have a OD Pedal before your digital Distortion Pedal which also is in front of your digital Amp? Even more Noise You wanna extend your HX (Stomp or Effekts probally) with hardware Pedals cause your preset its allready packed full? wakwaaaak Your FXloop also requiers Blocks which takes space from your overall preset. Sadly, if you think you can "upgrade" the capabilitys of your effects of stomp your mistaken. Idk what it is with Send/return or Loop blocks. pretty sure it wont take much DSP away from anything. We have come so far. Since Update 3.0 we enjoy 8 instead of 6 Block in HX Stomp and Effects. Fix to get more out of the HX: Whouldnt it be great to get Send/Return or Loop Blocks there own sort of thing? Like the Signal Split. We can allready to it, it takes no block. I whould love to see Line6 implement 1 free FXLoop or 1 free set of Send/Return in non Helix hardware with limited Blocks. Just like the Signal Split. --- And that noise.... Its pretty much unusable if you plan on using an Amp within HX and use Hardware OD oder SD. Digital OD and SD are fine. And thats really a shame. Not even the best Gate Pedal with 4cm will help you with that. Since it only takes to block with no hardware signal chain attached to throw white noise at you like nothing else. Can we talk also about FXLoop in Stereo. If you plan on using the Stereo Loop with a Splitter cable to get FX L and R at the same time... yea, you get that. But one Signal chain will be left, the other right. Giving terrible phasing problems. Pretty much unusable that way. Fix for phasing?: Why is it that you dont have a option to make both inputs Mono instead of one R one L stereo. So you can have both of your signalchains but the just produce mono sound. Ofc you want that stereo stuff for delays or something like that. But the raw signal with OD. we dont need stereo for that. Point 1 and 2 combined "Fix": Imagin not having a Send/Return/Loop Right and Left in the first place. Why not having just Send/Return/Loop and let us choose L/R in the setting of the block. That whould mean if you want to create a Preset with 2 different loops, Left and right, you can change them via Snapshot or Button. you have your X Pedal active and wanna switch snapshots and get your X Pedal off the Signalchain and add your Y Pedal. If its an option to select which Channel you wanna have its an instand win. Leave the Trials in peace and you can have 2 signal chains for the price of one. Overall i love my Stomp. But im just so disapointed of the FXloop. Its just a hassle and you litterly gain nothing from it. You actually loose more then you gain, since you cant adress normal pedals via Midi and can only have 1 loop at a time despite having the capabilitys for having 2. I know this phasing issue is discussed for years. And i know that nobody from Line6 will even read this thread. but damn i wish they whould cause i feel like after making such great upgrades to the software, this whould turn the HX from 10 to 11. If you have workarrounds for that. feel free to tell me. I have my setup working now, but again, i have to delete Blocks to get Room for FXloop which doesnt really do a lot. I simply cannot have stacks ODs or SD in a chain even with a Gate cause of the all present whitenoise which comes even when you dont have a pedal plugged in. And i cant use the Stereo send and L/R return to its fullest cause of the phasing and Stereo issues. PS: All that stuff whould also make extremly good sense considering the new ishly HX One. If you want to expand HX Stomp or Effects via HX One, you encounter the exact problems. Noise - FXloop blocks ... Fixing them or just adjusting the function of FXloops/Send/Return means HX One becomes actually more viable as an upgrade option. listen to me Line6 :P
12. Hello, I tried connecting my Helix Stomp XL to the return of my Marshall Valvestate VS65R during a rehearsal with the idea of using the speaker of the amp to utilize the amp and cab simulations that I have in the snapshots of my Helix. The configuration I used was as follows: 1. A cable from the Helix’s L/Mono Output to the return of the Marshall. 2. In global settings, I selected the output as ‘instrument.’ The problem is that with the volume control of the Helix at maximum, the Marshall sounds too quiet (almost imperceptible). Increasing the volume on the Marshall (neither the overdrive nor the clean channel volume) doesn’t work either. I also tried increasing the decibels of the output in the signal chain in the helix, but that didn’t work either. I’ve tried this with two Valvestate amplifiers from the 2000 series, and the same thing happens. So, during the rehearsal, I ended up connecting the Helix to a PA, but I’d like the option to use a cab instead of going directly to the PA. What could be causing this? Would I need to connect the Helix output to a physical preamp and then to the cab? Thank you very much.
13. Check out this video where I show how to setup the Helix to control Loopy HD on your iPad. This is an amazing looper and the Helix finally makes me excited to get into a looper again.
14. I practice with apps on my iPhone. I just bought a new Helix floor in April and can't figure out how to run my iPhone through it. In my old POD HD500xl there was an input. Not so with Helix. I've tried the AUX in but all the effects are added on top. I tried the returns but nothing sounds. Please help. Tired of double headphones!
15. Hello, How can we retrieve the presets, snapshots, bank names or list using MIDI ? (SysEx,CC, PC, Note or else ?) Is this possible ? Thank you very much for any help on it. Best regards.
16. Oddball question: Is there a way to use an expression pedal connected to helix as a way to rapidly switch between a series of entirely different presets or snapshots? Say, using the 0-10% or a single expression pedal for a Van Halen inspired preset, the 11-20% for a Djent-inspired preset, the 21-30% for a jazz fusion preset, the 31-40% for a polysynth, etc.? I'm reasonably familiar with presets, and snapshots, but what I'm asking about isn't using an expression pedal as a switch to turn on and off individual effects within a preset, but having the exp pedal serve like an additional set of toeswitches in preset mode that are quickly rotatable, whether using one of the EXP inputs or MIDI. A basic use case might be holding down a single note or chord and rocking the exp back and forth to create a swirling series of entirely different, independent guitar tones. Is it possible? If so, how?
17. I'm using a Helix for all my live sounds and I've recently started experimenting with setting up my pan in the Helix itself so I don't have to rely on the sound guys to do it. I'm using two cabinets on all my presets and I pan them hard left and right and then I use the output block for my overall panning. So based on parts of the songs, I've got my main output from the Helix going either fully to the right for harmony & doubled parts, dead center for lead, and hard left-right for when I'm the rhythm guitar and the other guy is doin lead. Is there a way to achieve this on the other guitarist's rig? He uses a POD Go and I've been able to set up the centered lead and the full left for harmony and doubled parts, but I can't figure out if it's possible to split his signal left-right the way I do with the Helix? On my rig it's different from keeping both cabs centered and lowering the volume, since if they're hard left-right they don't mix together, but since he has only one cab would a centered sound with a volume cut be the way to go? Ideally I want to be able to push his sound very wide and in the background so there is space for it but it doesn't fight with my lead in the center.
18. Hello everyone. I really want to enjoy the HELIX world, but I’m struggling with an issue I can't seem to resolve. I've read countless posts on similar problems and tried every possible solution, but to no avail. In short, my problem is that on any amplifier, as soon as I increase the gain slightly (even with low gain and adding pedals like the Klon or TS808), I get an awful sound. I would describe it as a "buzzing, dark, grey noising, clipping". Especially on low frequencies, it sounds like a fuzz. It's as if a synthesizer is playing alongside my guitar, dirtying the sound. It is impossible to achieve "definition". The issue occurs across all amplifiers and is particularly noticeable in edge-of-breakup tones. While it might also be present in high-gain settings, it tends to be masked. Some amplifiers exhibit this effect more prominently than others. To illustrate the problem, I have exaggerated the effect in a sample recorded on a VOX AC15 with only the amp and cab. The first part features the bridge pickup, followed by the neck pickup, with both volume knobs fully open. Despite varying the settings, I cannot achieve a "defined" sound unless I remove all the gain, which is not the desired tone. Another sample with MATCHLESS amp is provided (maybe on this it's much more evident). Please listen carefully to the samples before you comment. My setup: Epiphone Les Paul Standard (standard pickups, correct height, open tone pots) Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (gain at 0, input set to “instrument” – input level is okay, never in the red) HELIX Native in REAPER (please notice, in recent past I owned Pod Go and Helix LT and faced the same problem) ALTO MS8A speakers on proper stands in the correct position (I also tried with Edifier R1280T studio monitors and headphones, but the result is the same) 1st Sample - AC15 AUDIO SAMPLE VOX AC15 2st Sample - MATCHLESS AUDIO SAMPLE MATCHLESS I have tried everything: Cutting low and high frequencies in the cabs Trying different combinations of cab, amp, and microphone positions Equalizing before and/or after the amplifier Lowering the input (though I was already below -18db, so that's not the issue, even at very low levels I face the issue; the output volume is also low) Gain at zero on my audio interface Different buffers on the audio interface Different cables Different DAWs Lowering the bass in the amp’s EQ Lowering the gain and/or master on the amps Nothing has solved the problem. Listen to this at 08:28: Yes, I know… different guitar, amp, cab, but I've also tried with a Stratocaster and a Telecaster which I own, and the issue is still there, even if it's more evident with the Les Paul since it's a "darker" guitar. The key concept to me is that I find it impossible to get that “clarity” with only an AMP plus CAP (like my samples are made, and yet like the video from Whorship Tutorials). I really hope you can help me! Thanks in advance to all of you.
19. Hello. I do a lot of cover-gigs using the helix for my guitar, but usually I cannot hear myself singing. This is a constant point of frustration for me because it really limits my ability to sing the way I'd like to. I'd love to get in-ears, but given the nature of these gigs, I don't think I can swing it. I was wondering if I could use the Helix to accomplish the same thing without mucking up the front-of-house mix by plugging the mic directly into the Helix and then running the front-of-house cable into one of the XLR outs. My thinking was that I'd run the signal unaltered to the house mix, but also run it with some processing to headphones along with my guitar. This set up wouldn't manage to include the rest of the band, but I think I can probably experiment with the volume settings until I find a setting that (A) allows me to hear the band and (B) gives me more vocal feedback so that I can actually... sing. Would that work?
20. Hey everyone. I recently noticed that my Helix is outputting different levels through the left and right channels. I've always run a stereo setup so I thought maybe it was the way the amp settings were so I compensated with adjusting their individual volumes. I usually run 2 amps which are hard panned. However, I recently had to setup and run a mono system so that I could have 1 signal go to the mixing desk and another signal go to my own foldback. It was here that I found the signal from the left channel is far quieter than the right channel. I had the two xlr's plugged into the helix but only plugged one into the foldback at a time. This way I could check that the signal was just being doubled onto the other channel and ready for the gig. It was here that I realised that the signal level was different. To make sure it wasn't an effect on a patch I loaded a blank patch and tested the dry signal going straight through the helix and into the foldback. This had the same result. This has me kind of stumped. I can compensate it to make do however left and right channel should be the same. I want to avoid backing everything up and doing a factory reset. I always find doing this stuffs up with my midi programming and snapshots. Has anyone experienced this before?
21. Hi Helixists Being already aware of this post which contradicts the manual on the 1/4" outs What is the official info on Helix's Outputs? XLRs: This ones clearly Balanced! Mic or Line Level switchable, but when in Line level -10dBV or + 4dBU? 1/4": Manual says unbalanced... but are they really? Again confusion comes from the aforementioned post. Instrument or line Switchable , but when in Line level -10dBV or + 4dBU? Sends: Same as 1/4" Would be sooo nice for the manual to be clear on this. :- ) Guix the Helixist standing by.
22. Is there a way to import to an HX Stomp XL my M9 settings? And even my Atomic Firebox (at least the IRs)? I have relied on my M9 for countless tours and shows, and always had a backup board all set... Atomic Firebox direct to PA, Line 6 M9, a v1.1 OCD, and a couple others. I LOVE the sounds I get from that setup, but I needed to size down to fit as carry-on for fly-dates. NOW, I'm trying to make this happen. Is there ANY WAY to get the settings for some of the effects on my presets off of my M9 and into the HX Edit? AND, how about the Atomic (at least the IRs I bought for it, as transferring the amp models doesn't seem to be a logical option. If anyone can please help, it would be greatly appreciated!!!!
23. Help with Helix and studio monitor setup I recently got my HS5 studio monitors and have connected them to my helix floor with the 1/4” to 1/4” cables. In the global preferences on helix I’ve set the 1/4” setting to Line and the level knob on the back of the monitors in the centre position which is +4dB. My main usage is to use Helix as an audio interface to record. I’ve been watching YouTube videos and reading the line 6 forums but I’m having a bit of trouble understanding some things. - The big volume knob on the Helix and Unity gain I see a lot of people saying that they turn this knob up fully and leave it there? Do I need to do this for my setup? Will it affect my tones in any way if I don’t do this? - Calibrating studio monitors for loudness with pink noise and SPL app for mixing purposes When I was looking into this one what I seen people doing was using the level control on the back of their monitors to achieve the desired SPL but this has me confused. My understanding from Helix manual was that going from 1/4” to 1/4” on the studio monitors would need a setting of Line level in global settings. Also the setting for Line level on my monitors is the +4dB one, so if I use the level knobs on the monitors to calibrate won’t that mess things up? Why can’t I calibrate the SPL with the Helix volume knob instead? I apologise if this is a bit of a word salad, but I am new to this stuff and just trying my best to learn. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
24. I have some gigs coming up where I'm playing in a duo. The other guy is playing bass and a drumpad through a Boss RC-505 looper. This is all going right to FOH. We'll have floor monitors. Since his signal is going straight to FOH, do I need to use my FRFR on stage? I would have left main out to FOH and right to FRFR. What should my volume knob be set to? I've seen some people say 6, but I've seen others say 10. Anything else I should be aware of settings wise? I've been searching this forum and reddit and finding a lot of contradicting info. Just want to make sure I have all my ducks in a row before the shows.
25. Good day folks. I Finally upgraded to a Helix LT from (HD500X). It is a mind blowing incredible pedal. I do have to sort out an issue that me and a friend, whom both have the same (Older) Marshall amp and same Helix pedal. We both are using this pedal with the 4CM and using a modeled clean tone. Now that we have the Helix and the ability to use snapshot mode we also want to utilize the clean channel of the Marshall by changing amp channel with the helix using the EXP pedal 2 jack. It works no problem changing the Channels but when plugging in the cable you instantly get a loud hum. We tried everything and googled it extensively. As far as we can tell it is also a problem with both the Helix and the (Axe FX units) with older amps. We tried a new DSL combo, it does not hum when using the Helix to switch channels. Talking to my amp tech he needs to meter the Helix jack for continuity and he thinks its either a ground loop or something affecting the switching matrix in the Head. Each jack on the DSL is a standard tip to sleeve short. But it is referenced to the chassis. When he comes into town this weekend he is going to trouble shoot it for me. I'm just curious if anyone else is having this issue on older amps? Has anyone had an amp tech fix the humming issue? Any help or incite will be greatly appreciated. Cheers Rick
