  1. Does anyone have a suggestion for getting an MXR Distortion+ sound? I have always loved this distortion pedal. It was never very popular and I have never seen anyone else using it but I have always loved the sound. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks
  2. Hi all, I'm hoping someone can give me some guidance on how I can use my Helix with an external looper (Boss RC-3, for example)? I am not using an amp. My Helix goes to my studio monitors. Where in the chain do I put the RC-3? I just got my Helix and am really loving it. I just don't know how to use my RC-3 with it. Thanks! -Michael
  3. Can I copy a tone into a snapshot? So if it on another patch can I copy it into a particular snapshot? If so, how can this be done? Thanks
  4. I asked this over in the Blackstar forum also, no response yet. The manual says to be careful when hooking up to ext amps, making sure they're "short to sleeve". The BS HT40 I have does this so I should be okay. "Should" because I measure 3.3v from tip to sleeve (OD channel) & ring to sleeve (reverb) coming from the amp sw jack when both are turned on. When the switches are toggled on the amp footswitch the 3.3v shorts to ground turning off the LEDs & deactivating either one or both. I think using a TRS cable should work fine to switch both from the LT. Can someone please let me know if you've done this & it's no problem, and/or that the LT uses relay switching and therefore the 3.3v won't hurt it. I don't mean to make a big deal out of nothing but also don't want to screw up my new Helix. As always, any responses appreciated.
  5. I have my Helix set up to show the songs on the top row and the snapshots for each song below. So I can have a song chosen and below I can have one snapshot as the intro, One as the verse, One as the chorus. etc. My problem is that when I change the 2nd snapshot it changes the tone universally. So each snapshot changes to the new sounds. What I am trying to do is make every snapshot a different part. Is there something that I have set incorrectly? Thanks
  6. Hey Everyone, First off I am new to these forums so I am sorry if this question has already been answered. I had a hard time finding an answer for it so I figured I would ask. I just recently bought a Line 6 Helix LT and it is on its way to me. I know you can use Helix as just a pedal board with effects through a tube amp via the "4CM" (Four Cable Method), and that would work for me when I jam with buddy's. But with my Fender Hot Rod Deville it is hard to play that in my bedroom and sound good. SO, finally to the question. I was just wondering if this is even possible I don't know? Can I take my Fender amp "head" and unplug it from the 4-10 speakers and use the amp "head" as an amp in Helix and combine that with a 4x10 cab model? then I could just output that through a nice pair of headphones and I could play my nice tube amp in the middle of the night and not bother anyone? It almost sounds too good to be true. But in my head I think it could work! Let me know what you think!
  7. Hi, Just got a Helix rack and I'm new to this forum, but since Helix is so new to the world, I couldn't find any suggestions on Google. So far I've been very pleased, but *I think* I've discovered quite a limitation. Am I right in thinking there is not a MIDI command that can bypass or engage an effect block? I know there are CC49-58 which act like the footswitches, but they toggle the bypassed state, not set it explicitly. Every other effects processor I've used (inc the M13) was able set an effect "on" or "off" using MIDI. For example, on the M13, setting CC11 to 127 turned the bottom left effect "on", setting CC11 to 0, turned the effect "off". Am I right in thinking that with the Helix, we can only toggle effects? This means if I'm doing a song and an effect is toggled accidentally, or a MIDI command is missed, then that effect will be in the wrong state for the rest of the song, not just until it is next bypassed/activated. This just seems kind of crazy to me!? I've tried setting the footswitch assignment to momentary instead of latching, but then CC49-58 have no effect (which I believe is by design). I also know you can use controller assignment on the "mix" of an effect, then dial it down to 0% when you want it off and 100% when you want it on. But that's a workaround at best, and many of the effect blocks don't have a "mix" parameter (amps, cabs, EQ...). I was kind of disappointed with the MIDI implementation on the M13, which was a fabulous piece of hardware, but lacking thorough MIDI control. When I looked through the manual of the Helix, I thought "Oh man, this thing can do it all!". But if I'm now going to find you can't reliably turn effect on and off with MIDI, I'm going to feel a bit robbed :( Cheers, David
  8. Hey guys, Guess what? Another Metal Tone! This was inspired by some of you asking if my Helix tones would work on HX Stomp. This tone uses only 5 FX blocks within Helix including a reverb block used for the ambiance that can easily be discarded bringing it down to only 4 blocks! For reference, HX Stomp is capable of handling up to 6 blocks. I am using my Solar Guitars A1.6 Artist with the Evertune bridge. This thing slays! 9. What do you guys and gals think about this unit for doing bass and guitar? I don’t have any experience with any of thier other products but I often hear good things. I have been wanting a powered cab solution for running both; so, this seems like a winner. http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/powerengine/deucedeluxe.html
  10. Does anyone use the Helix through a Katana 212 Amp? Do they sound good together? I am currently using a Boss GT100 and I hate the sound I'm getting. Just wanted to know your opinion of matching up the two. Thanks
  11. 1. Launch Helix Native inside your DAW. 2. Click on the icon for Helix Native in the lower middle of the app. 3. In the new floating window for the app's Settings, click on Restore Factory Setlists. 4. Confirm that you want to restore the factory defaults and you're done.
  12. I have a setup where the Helix LT controls a Beatbuddy (drummachine) and a Boomrang looper through midi. When I change presets on the Helix the Beatbuddy automatically changes to the right song. It works really well, until today. I would like to be able to change guitars during a song. Playing the acoustic while singing, and then change to the electric for a solo. The problem is that when I change preset during a song, the Helix sends out a midi command that changes the drum beat on the Beatbuddy. I have removed all midi messages from command center. When I change to an empty preset I have the same problem. So my question is this. How do I make sure that the Helix does not send any midi messages, when I change presets?
  13. I'm planning pretty far ahead here (10-12 months) to buy a powercab plus. I like using cables in cable looms to make one big cable running in between things, so I want to run a l6 link cable and a long iec cable together. I know that generally it can cause interference to run data or audio cables next to power cables but has anyone tried this and have issues? Or are aes or l6 link cables pretty resistant to interference?
  14. Hi, I haven't owned a Line 6 Product for a long time, It was a Guitar pod. I currently own a Boss GT100 Multi Effects board. I'm not too happy with it it's very muddy. I have heard great things about the Helix but the price, Yikes! So what are the major difference between the Helix and Helix LT? Are there ever any sales on these items. Thanks in advance.
  15. Hello, I’m need to the helix and I’m struggling a bit. I’ve upgrade from an amplifi to the helix and I really liked how I could edit tones on my iPad. So naturally when I purchased the helix, I wanted similar functionality and purchased the helix native as a plugin in Cubase 10 since I was given a free copy. When I launched Cubase 10, create a track and add helix native, I select d a factory tone, but it doesn’t sync with the helix peddle. Am am I out of luck or is there a way to use both the helix and helix native together beyond syncing patches?

    Comparison Day!

Today I compared two amps with the corresponding models on the Helix Rack. My 1978 Marshall JMP 50w MkII non master volume (bridged), and my BRBS Vintage Class 50watt (https://www.brbsamplification.com/vintage-class-mk2) an Italian boutique amplifier, that is a 50 watt JCM800 clone (with some personal mods). I linked the cab output of the amplifiers to a palmer PDI 03, a load box/speaker emulator, bypassing the speaker emulation and put the real "amp block" in the first helix fx loop. Then I created a preset with the corresponding models (for the Marshall a Brit Trem Jumped, for the BRBS a Brit 2204) and a FX loop block with the true amplifiers, after that i put a cab block (a mandarin cab with a sm57 and a Royer 121, and then i created two snapshots: one with the model active, and another with the true amp. After some tweaking I really managed to match the true and the model amplifiers, and they are really really close, also If I have to dial pretty different values on the modeled amplifiers. In general, the amp models sound really really bright compared to the true amplifiers, but it's pretty simple to match the two without an EQ block. I really recommend this experience, is an eye opener! The helix is fantastitc! On saturday I will have my first gig with the Helix, and I'm prette excited!
  17. Hi! I really miss PC Bank Toggle / PC toggle hold / CC toggle hold midi capability. Other midi controllers have these message types - would be such a nice and helpful update to the Helix. I have my drives in a Voodoo Labs Hex loop switch - hooked up to one of the fx loops on my Helix HX FX. Changing presets on the Hex using PC bank toggle would make it a lot easier using the Hxfx as the center of my rig. Others with the same need?

    L6 link and the Helix

How does L6 LINK work in Helix? It's drastically different from POD HD. If you have one StageSource speaker or DT25/50 amp, Helix will send a mono signal to it. If you have two StageSource speakers or DT25/50 amps, Helix will send the first one in the chain the left signal and the second one the right signal. We have a template that has L6 LINK set up and ready to go, and you can switch topologies with the footswitches.

  20. Hello everyone, after several months of use I can say that for me learning to use this combo Shuriken + Helix, you can create any kind of sound and be inspired for your music! Surely you have to understand its operation and try not to get lost in the thousand parameters, but in my opinion once everything is set correctly and learned the operation the benefits will be far greater than the doubts
  21. Hello, I have been using Helix for 7-8 months and have listened to myself primarily through headphones. I have also been recording stuff using Helix. Now I want to start using it in studios and gigs and I am unsure whether to plug in Helix directly into speakers or to go into the guitar amp input? I also don't know how does this affect the presets I've been using. My presets all use a combo amp + cab block, which I guess I should change if I actually use a real amp? Thanks in advance :)
  22. The Helix is designed for the user to set up a number of signal flow combinations. It allows for unique situations that would normally be extremely difficult to set up in real life. They can now be easily arranged within the unit. For further reading, make you also check out the Helix manual section on Serial vs. Parallel Routing and Moving Split & Merge Blocks. View the Helix manual here Having said that, you can also get some un desirable results if you're not careful with how you set up your routing. These can include phasing issues, volume drop, or noise floor increase. *Notes about Inputs and outputs · 1/4" Returns are unbalanced. · All Helix outputs (main outs and Sends) are impedance balanced, so you can plug a TRS cable and go to another device balanced input and profit from some common-mode noise cancellation. . When the Helix outputs are set to line level, they are +4dBU nominal with approximately 15dB of headroom. When set to instrument level, they -10bBu. Or more simply, they are 20Vpp max input/output. Noise floor increase due to the introduction of Sends and Returns When using the Helix sends and returns the noise floor can be increased. This is due to the number of A/D converters now used in the signal chain. Most of the increase is negligible. However, it can become more noticeable if the sends/returns are placed in front of a high gain amp model such as the PV Panama (Peavy 5150) due to its inherent high noise floor. This phenomenon occurs on the Pod HD series as well. . Potential latency issues due to the introduction of Sends and Returns This is another one that you won't notice in most situations, but could arise given certain circumstances. The tiny amount of latency introduced from another set of A/D converters is impossible to hear on it's own. An issue could occur if you merge that pathway back with another serial pathway that wasn't going through that send/return. The millisecond delay may cause some undesirable phasing. Below I have pictured a signal path that might yield poor results. If you move the merge block before the Send/Return, then it would eliminate any potential phasing issues. Using Helix Hardware as an interface to record When using the Helix as an interface with a DAW, the signal routing can get a little confusing and it might become difficult to balance levels for monitoring. The typical set up would be guitar into Helix, then Helix to computer via USB. You would then monitor from the headphones, 1/4" or XLR outputs. Given that setup, the guitar and the DAW's playback are sharing the same monitoring. If you have the guitar going into the DAW and then back out, you will hear your guitar twice. You can mute the DAW's return of the guitar track to avoid this. Also, in this case the volume knob will control the total output making it tougher to balance the sound of the guitar and the DAW's playback. Try setting the volume knob to only control the feed you're monitoring, and it will no longer control the USB feed to your computer. You can also try making the playback volume adjustment from the DAW. Using Helix Hardware as an interface to record with Helix Native The above signal flow still applies, but a new level of complexity is added. Since the hardware is no longer processing the guitar, you can't mute your guitar tracks return feed, because you'll want to hear it. What works best is the set up the Helix with a blank preset, and then change the output block to your desired USB output. That way, the only thing you're hearing from the Helix is your DAW's return. Auto Impedance Switching With the Helix family, the default setting for the guitar input is auto impedance. The impedance will be determined by the first block in the signal chain. Even if the first block is bypassed, the impedance setting from that effect block will determine the input signal level. This automatic impedance will change the input volume and tone, this is most apparent with guitars that have passive pickups and are directly connected to the guitar in of Helix. Distortion Pedal Volume Drop Sometimes when adding a distortion/fuzz pedal, your signal volume drops. Here's a link to a great article written by our sound designer Ben Adrian that can explain in detail what's occurring. Although the article is written to describe what happens in the analogue world, it's affect can be experienced within the Helix and it's digital models. Distortion Pedal Volume Drop (and how hard diode clipping works)
  23. Trying to change the Helix from stomp mode to snapshot mode. However, changing the "Preset Mode Switches" mode doesn't change the button modes. They continue in stomp mode. All the other button changes are reflected as you change the value (like Up/down or Stomp Mode Switches). Is this a bug? Seems like I am missing something.
  24. Hi ! . I just got my Helix 3 days ago and have been fighting with it in order to recreate my "signature" Lead tone I have been playing with for over 6 years with my Zoom G3X.(playing direct into active speakers and foh). No matter what I ve tried with the Helix so far (I play into 2 DXR10's ) or into my studio monitors) it sounds harsh, is missing warmth and sounds cheap compared to my Zoom tone..(iv e made recordings to A/B the sounds) and my Zoom tone is just so much better..) The tone on the Zoom is just a tube screamer into a marshall with delay and reverb) but saying that its really the delay and the reverb that have a warmth I cannot get from Helix sofar.. Here are 2 short youtue clips with my Zoom tone.. If anyone could give me any advice on how to create a similar tone with Helix ..that would be awesome The closest I ve gotten was with the Marshall JT45 model but again..on the recordings it's just harsh and cold compared to the Zoom sofar.. I want to get this right and love the possibilities of the Helix..but I cant go for a worsened tone Thanks cheers and happy new year..
