I made a discovery this weekend whis was important for me, but which was probably painfully obvious to everyone else. Apologies, for the rambling that's about to follow. When I get excited my ability to communicate is . . . compromised I know that the Helix/DT combo is a completely different animal than the HD/DT one. But I've been trying to make my Helix and DT50 interact as similarly as I can. The first step, of course is to use DTEdit to blank the preamp modeling for all four voicings on Channels A & B. Then blank the mic/cab modelling for the direct output. What that leaves you with is basically a DT power amp section. Some have success picking a Voicing, Operating Class, and Tube Configuration and just leaving it. Then running all of their presets through that. I'm sure that sounds amazing, but i knew there had to be more. Pretty much every parameter of the DT can be controlled via midi. The aforementioned three, Channel Selection, EQ, Reverb, And the "hidden" parameters unique to the DT50; 12AX7 Boost, Phase Inverter Voltage, Topology, and Feedback Capacitor Type. So my goal became to use midi to make the Helix/DT sound and behave as much like the real thing as possible. In an earlier thread, I discovered how to use the midi instant commands. So I tried to figure out how to set it up so that when I selected a preset, the commands would fire to set up the DT50 to mimic the power section of whatever preamp I was using. So which parameters to assign to the Instant Commands? Well the EQ and channel volume controls are disabled when you clear out the preamp models, so I can forget those. I have reverb in my patch if I need it, so cross that off. Which leaves me with seven: 1) Channel/Voicing 2)Operating class 3) Pentode/Triode, 4) 12AX7 boost, 5) Phase Inverter B+ voltage, 6) Phase Inverter type, 7) Topology It's a bit of a hassle to program all those midi commands at the start, but worth it I hope. There's just one problem. There are only six instant command slots available. So which parameter can I leave out? So I used DarrellM5's spreadsheet, which contains all of the default power amp settings from the HD500 So I hooked my DT up to HDEdit and starting with those, Then I began to set the rest to see which were most important to getting my the sound I was looking for and which I could leave out. Which leads me to the discovery that is the inspiration for this post. ALL of those settings can be saved can be saved to a voicing slot in DT Edit - Channel A: I, II, III, IV or Channel B: I, II, III, IV For example, I have a Plexi patch which calls up Channel A, Voicing II. When I load it up I can, using only one Instant Command, change the DT settings to Class AB, Pentode, 12AX7 Boost on, Topology II, Phase Inverter B+ voltage to High, and Feedback Capacitor to X. All to match the way Line 6 sets them up (which I assume are the settings they settled on after examining all the gear they modeled) Or I can change it to anything I want. All with only one midi instant command. A couple down sides. One, you're limited to the 8 Voicing slots available. Two, at least with the Plexi, which is the only one I've really worked with so far, the DT Master works in the same way, the volume control would on the real amp. You have to get pretty loud to get any sort of distortion happening. But when you do, it's glorious! Then back off the volume on your guitar, ease up on your attack and you can get those beautiful "clean, but on the verge of breaking up" tones. I love it with my MIM strat with CS '69s.

Speakers, Aux, PA?)Need Advice on what to play my Helix Through
mattodonohue posted a topic in Helix
Hey all, I have had my Helix for about two months and have just been playing it through an aux chord hooked up to my old guitar amplifier. I would like to get a much better sound because I feel like the aux chord + cheap guitar amp isnt doing it. I talked to one guy that played his Helix directly through a PA. What do you all think? What can I play my helix through that will give me a good sound? Any specific suggestions? Thanks! -
Hi folks, I have had the floorboard model for a couple of weeks, just for practising at home and really enjoyed it but I'm finding it awkward to position the floorboard model so it is easy to tweak and see the screen, etc. I think the rack model would suit me better because I can have the rack unit high enough to see and tweak, and have the Helix Control on the floor where it belongs. I'm thinking if I get a nice solid-wood rack it will look like a piece of furniture and the wife won't notice :-) The shop I bought it from has agreed that I can still return my Helix and buy the rack + controller instead. Before I do that I have a few questions for anyone with rack experience, as I have never used or bought one before: 1) Weight - seems like a lot of rack gear is very light, but things like Helix rack and Kemper rack are a lot heavier. Are the front rack screws enough to take that weight, or do I need some extra rails or something inside the rack itself to support the rear of the Helix rack unit? 2) I'm guessing the Helix Controller comes with a really long cable for stage use, I will only need around 3m, is there a recommended type of shorter replacement cable for the Helix Rack + Controller? I think it's just a network cable isn't it? 3) I thought it might be handy if possible to bring some of the Helix rear inputs into a front rack panel, I have seen some pre-cut panels but not sure where or what type of sockets I would need to put into the pre-cut holes. Can anyone point me to some parts to extend USB and audio sockets into a front rack panel? Thanks for the help folks, Charlie

A quick setup, I have the Helix Rack and am using it with other devices like the Eventide H9. I know that via midi I can send a PC to the H9 from Helix via the Command Center. My question is if I have an expression pedal connected to the Helix, in my case it would be via the Helix Control, would I be able to use that expression pedal to send a CC via midi to the H9 so that I can adjust (as an example) the delay feedback of a particular H9 preset? Thanks

Sometime ago I watched a video on Periphery's live set rig and I learned that they used a DAW to send MIDI signals to their Axe-Fx to switch patches during their performance. I was curious if the Helix is capable of this and if there is a good tutorial to set it up.

Greetings! To preface the below, I have searched high and low for a real answer for my issue. I hope that I am able to find what I'm looking for here! Problem: I have 4 snapshots in Preset "001" that I am trying to integrate MIDI with to switch channels on my Carvin Legacy 3. Snapshot 1: "Clean" - I'd like the Helix to send CC #81 over Channel 1 (MIDI talk, of course) Snapshot 2: "Crunch/Dry" - I'd like the Helix to send CC #82 over Channel 1 Snapshot 3: "Crunch/Wet" - I'd like the Helix to send CC #82 over Channel 1 Snapshot 4: "Lead" - I'd like the Helix to send CC #83 over Channel 1 CC parameters #84 and #85 control Legacy 3 boost and reverb functions respectively. I do not intend to use these at this time. I have tried going into the Global Settings and was successful in assigning CC #81-83 to my Helix Floor unit. I can find the toggles grayed out in "Stomp Mode" and can switch the amp channels in stomp mode. I CAN'T trigger the changes in Snapshot mode, however....I'm perplexed. Super perplexed. Can someone walk me through the steps that I need to take to set this up? I want to have this as a guide to take with me in the event something happens. I play in a band that travels internationally and due to time constraints, I'm basically freaking out inside. We are going from Michigan to New York and then on a cruise ship to Bermuda in literally less than 30 days now. Any assistance will be super appreciated! Disclaimer: I'm new to the Helix and this forum. Save me pls.

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and Line 6 products as well. I have a new Helix and I'm having trouble getting it set up how I want. I have some very nice Category 5 and PRS amps that I currently use live so I'm wanting to use the Helix to replace my large pedalboard. I'm not going to need the amp models live. I've seen videos/tutorials where people have it set up with effects all across the board, I believe 10 of them since the bank up/down where not present. I was thinking that's the stompbox mode but trying that last night I couldn't get the lights to stop flashing to engage the effects or get it to save. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I figured out how to save a board as a patch but that limits my pedals to eight. Thanks for the help in advance! Jon

I've had the Helix for about 3 months now. Totally happy with all the stuff it can do and it's an integral part of my live/studio rig. I'm near fanatical about how I maintain my gear (still have an all-plastic Boss ME-8 from 1996 that works perfectly) so I'm a bit miffed by this problem I'm seeing with one of the 'Scribble Strip' LCD screens on my Helix - that vertical line of dead, black pixels on the left, with another one developing as well. Anyone else having a similar problem? I live in Bangalore, India and seeing how few distributors/retailers around the country even stock the Helix, I'm understandably very unsure of having it fixed (which would simply mean replacing that screen I assume?). From my experience with old PC LCD screens developing this issue, it's also likely that it 'spreads' - i.e. that particular screen is soon going to be covered with these vertical lines of dead pixels. Line6 - what do you suggest? Bruce

Hi, I’ve had this problem of missing scrollbars with the Helix application program since day 1, and I’d like to ask if anyone has a solution, or maybe I'm overlooking something obvious. How do I get the scroll bars to show up and stay showing? In the preset window it only shows up briefly when I down arrow passed the bottom preset and then quickly disappears - before I can get to it! In the editor window it will not show at all – so I can only get at the first 3 effect parametersÂÂÂÂÂ. Everything under that is hidden and I can’t find a way to get at them to adjust. I run the editor app from a Win7 PC in my studio and a Win10 laptop – same problem on both. I'm attaching a screen shot. Thanks!

Amazing repair work. I sent my Helix to Line 6 So. Cal. on a RMA. They received it early on the 12th of August and I just got it back this morning around 9:30am Pacific. I then uploaded 25 IRs and 4 User setlists; not all the setlists are at 100% so maybe 120 presets all together. And I did install the setlists not the individual presets just for the heck of it. Then I overwrote several of the presets with other presets as a test. Before I sent it in I could recreate my issue repeatedly. After stress testing it and doing everything I could to recreate the issue there was not one hiccup other then the rebuilding presets the first time I restarted the unit after loading my presets. Other than that I have had several hours of trouble free performance. But there is more! The reverb and echo FX blocks I use are ... "WOW" ... crystal, more pronounced, and almost sound like higher then high fidelity components got installed. I am now toning down my reverb and echo FX blocks as well as reducing the gain to below 0.0 on my normal global EQ setting. Playing a Fair this Thursday. Can't wait Thank you to Line 6 repair Dennis

Hey guys, I'm about a week away from receiving my Helix floor unit - and I can't wait! Having been a Fractal user for the last 2 years, I've become quite accustomed to how the Axe FXii works, what it's limitations are, and to be fair, just how damn good that thing really is. I guess this is more of a question for the guys who have come across from Fractal to the Helix.. as the title suggests, what pro's/con's have you discovered? Where does one lack where the other one is superior? Any do's and don't's? Amp sim options? I know it's all very personal and preferential, it could be a simple thing that the Fractal FX8 or AX8 do not have an expression pedal built in. Or, the fact the Helix is completely colour whereas the Axe FX looks like, as one of my friends have recently said, a 1986 Casio calculator! Apologies if this question has already been asked! Cheers George

So I started the update for 2.01. Unit rebooted and started rebuilding presets. It is now hung up on rebuilding preset 495. Should I just let it sit or power off and hard reset (Holding buttons 9 and 10)

Hello all, I got my Helix yesterday, and needless to say I've had nothing but issues so far. I plugged it in and plugged my headphones in, and started playing. I noticed the signal would cut in and out every few seconds or so, so I unplugged the headphones... only to notice the tip of the headphone connector was still stuck inside the unit (which I do not blame on the Helix at all!). I was able to remove it luckily. Today, I just can't get any kind of signal into or out of the Helix. I've done numerous resets, and reinstalled the newest version of Helix firmware. Nothing. I have everything (headphones, guitar, USB to computer) plugged in exactly like I did yesterday when I got the unit and had sound, but nothing. Also yesterday, I connected the unit through USB to my Windows 10 desktop, and I was able to hear my computers sound through the headphone jack on the Helix. I can't even get that to work today. Any tips? I really wanna mess with the unit, but not in the fashion of repeated troubleshooting and the like. Thanks! CBpunk16

Has anyone tried the Firehawk 1500 as a FRFR monitor for Helix using the XLR i/o? Is there a consensus on tone quality? Does the Firehawk 1500 standup against the usual suspect in the market?

I've got a new Helix and bought a Variax 700 to try out some of the features. When I set a patch to a "per patch" input setting for the Variax to always select that guitar sound, the guitar seems to change to the desired sound initially but then keep that setting on any other patch selected after. Also, when I try to select an alternate tuning, it has no effect at all. Has anyone else had this and does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it as I can't find a global or patch related setting that might be causing it?

So the way I've been recording is I use the Helix into an interface which then goes into my Mac. On the Helix I have the guitar patch EQ'd and Compressed. I was wondering if I would get better mixing results by bypassing the EQ and Compression on the guitar patch for when I record, and then do the EQ'ing and Compression on my DAW.

Yes I know there's another thread on this but it's dead and I wanted to ask some more questions. I write most patches to be used in house of worship to the board scenario - so I have to control volume increases. The Helix doesn't have an internal VU meter and my cheap mixer at home only shows the signal is clipping - so I'm trying to understand the volume jumps of a parallel path. If I have a pretty simple setup - amp > delay > reverb and I pull the delay or reverb down into a parallel path (creates y split and merge block automatically) - how much is the volume actually increasing? To compensate for that increase, should you lower the volume at the merge block? Any other advise or recommendations for someone setting up patches and trying to limit volume like I do?

Hi, I've been using a POD X3 for my live sound for many years now and although I'm very happy with it, I've always wanted to upgrade, even more so now with the release of Helix. The trouble is, a few of my bands songs extensively use the X3's 'Synth Strings' effect, so much so that we cannot live without it. I bought an HD Pro a year or two back to replace the X3, seeing it had a 'Synth String' effect, however I had to return it as the HD's 'Synth String' sounded nothing like the X3's Synth String, plus it seemed the HD couldn't do half the the stuff the X3 could do in Dual Tone mode without reaching DSP processing limits? Are there plans to patch the Synth String effect into the Helix? If not, can there be? This will be the Synth String effect modelled on 'ARPSolina / Elka® Strings'. Also, for recording, I like to record the dry signal, and use POD Farm VST, so that I can tweak settings further down the line. Are there plans to make a VST Helix plugin, so that I can have Helix tones within my DAW, rather than one-shot recording?
