  1. Can anyone tell me how to calibrate an external expression pedal? I don't see this in the manual anywhere; from a post on TGP I was under the impression this is possible. Thanks
  2. So, I was thinking this morning, I am super happy that there is an editor for the Helix for Mac/PC but it lacks a little bit in the ways of portability. An iPad/Android version would really take the cake. We need more portability and a touch interface. Here's the idea if you wanna up vote it: http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/Helix-editor-for-iPad/826675-23508
  3. Hey everyone, I was leading a rehearsal last night and was having some weird problems with my JTV. I use a Helix currently and earlier in the day had tweaked a couple patches and tried a few different guitar models, all with good results. I was however just using a 1/4 cable in my office. At rehearsal I switched over to the VDI to make sure my battery wouldn't die from playing a lot during the day and noticed a few different things: - Tuning - With the VDI cable, I was unable to get the guitar in tune. The tuner on the Helix looked fine, even just listening with my ears and the volume down sounded fine. But with the volume on (models and mags I think) the tuning was all over the place. Couldn't play a chord without sounding strange - EQ/Frequency/Phasing? - With the VDI I was also noticing that none of the sounds I had programmed were anywhere close to what I had worked on. I'm used to this a little bit with going from headphones to a floor wedge (through PA) but I could not believe how awfully different it was last night. It sounded as if I had no lows, extremely bright highs and a thin sound. After about a half an hour, I got fed up and grabbed a 1/4 in. cable (should've done sooner). All the problems were gone! I had my sounds back that I had been happy with. Has anyone had a similar issue? Upon a quick visual inspection, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the VDI and it shouldn't be the guitar if it all works well through the 1/4 in jack. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
  4. Hi everyone, first time here. I just bought Helix and got their USB flash drive. However, the drive seems corrupt, I couldn’t open it neither on Mac OS X nor in Windows. Is there any way I can get the contents from the drive? I don’t want to go back to the store for such a small thing. By the way, this thing is awesome.
  5. Previously I had been using an eleven rack into pro tools 11. Monitoring my input was painless and I was able to adjust the volume in the pro tools mix window and use the 11r editor to adjust the output volume to adjust the input level if that makes sense. The fader in the pro tools mix window did not affect the actual input level, only the volume. This was nice. When I switched to helix everything is monitored through the helix. Now when adjusting the fader, volume isn't affected since I'm monitoring through the helix. I'm confused. It would be great to have the same setup I had with the 11r or some alternative, which is why I brought the Scarlett into the mix. Any suggestions so I am able to easily adjust the volume of things I am monitoring? I don't even hear a change Even when I mute the track after record enable.
  6. Hi All, Has anybody had any experience with the Whammy effect drastically altering the tone on a patch. I have it set up just to do dive bombs with the expression pedal, but when it's engaged, the tone completely changes. It becomes more treble and thin and it doesn't cut through as good. I never had this issue with the Whammy on the HD 500 so i'm not sure what the story is. The only thing it's displacing is the Wah in my effects chain. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any way around it barring setting up an EQ to counteract it(not too convenient :-/) Thanks
  7. I just purchased the asm-12 frfr to go with the helix. I am working towards making the jump to play live with the helix to frfr to FOH combo. I have always used modelers in the studio only, so I am nervous of this venture away from my traditional amp and pedalboard. I'd like to anticipate any issues ahead of time and be realistic. I play in an original hard rock band and we usually play out with 3-5 other bands on the bill and changeovers are quick. I don't always know what the FOH situation is so this makes me nervous since I've never sent anything other than a mic'ed cab from my rig to PA. Here are my thoughts on what I plan to do. Right now I'm planning on XLR out of helix to XLR input to Friedman then XLR out of the Friedman to FOH (Set to line output). I was initially concerned after reading about controlling my monitoring volume and it affecting FOH but there is a volume control on the Friedman. It's not very convenient in the back of the unit so if there is another way to independently control my volume without affecting FOH then please chime in. My other concerns are EQ. I will have my patches setup and EQ'ed to my liking only to have the house guy tell me it sounds terrible out front. Since I'm giving him an out from the frfr he's getting my EQ. Please educate me since this is new territory for me. If there is another preferred setup then I'm all for suggestions.
  8. http://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/One-Tap-press-to-reset-mod-FX-cycle/824525-23508 One press on the Tap switch restarts the modulation fx cycle without changing the tempo itself. Works on POD HD and I've been missing it since upgrading to Helix as our drummer uses click and I have the same tempo saved in my (per song) Helix presets but need to sync the start of the mod cycle (tremolo, flanger...) with the drums...
  9. Hello guys. I do not use USB recording so often, but when I tried yesterday Everything hooked up perfectly and Windows 7 recognized everything. All set! I used the software Audacity, whiuch is very simple to use just to be able to 'hear' the sound coming from Helix. But there was the problem: If I pickd a string, I didnot hear it immediately ... just about 0.5sec later, which is really disturbing! Anyway, anyone here had similar issue? Any tip is highly welcome! Cheers Leo
  10. Are my ears being strange, or is there a ringing at the end of each little riff in this clip? It's only present in the Les Paul (first half) not the PRS (second half). PRS starts at 25 seconds. Pier Murru on the Facebook group for Helix thinks it's resonant peak of the first pup is way stronger than the second pup... which is making sense. The pickup is a DiMarzio PAF Pro (bridge). Guitar is an Epi Les Paul Standard. Curious what other ears think of it. https://soundcloud.com/aepoc/lp-prs-test-4

    Helix Cab vs IR

I had a request on the FB group to do a comparison of IR vs Helix cabs. I'm not here to try and say one is better than the other or suggest what anyone should use, as there are people here on this forum that enjoy both. I just wanted to do a quick A/B. Definitely not trying to knock IR's. For this test I used a Vox Fawn normal channel and compared the stock 2x12 Silver Bell vs a Redwirez 2x12 silver, both with 121 mic 1" off the grill. To my ears they were pretty close. I know that comparing one Helix cab to one IR is VERY far from an exhaustive comparison, which wasn't my intent. My conclusion with THIS test is that the cabs were very similar. Which is to say IR's aren't always superior so whichever one makes you the happiest, go for it. Just trust your ears :)
  13. This info will probably be 101 type stuff for a lot of regulars on this forum in particular, but I had gotten some questions on my other patch videos about dual paths and stereo setups. So I made a video building a patch showing how to do this. If anyone has any questions about setting up dual paths this might be helpful.
  14. Ok so im new to this forum but ive been on the search for some versatile equipment that packs a mean punch both live and for practicing at lower volumes at home. Im in love with the helix based on what of seen and heard so far but what i hate is that in order to really experience its prowess I need to get a quality frfr solution. so then here comes the fh1500 and it seems that paired with the helix its an amazing setup and even l6 staff and endorses such a connection. I just wish that there was a helix1500, i mean why put inferior modeling in a frfr amp? when the helix tech is already available? so my big question is should I go FH1500 and dial in my settings? or do i go helix? or do i wait until l6 wises up and puts the helix in an amp cab?
  15. I've been working on Metallica tones for their first five albums. The goal was to get as accurate as possible. Here's where I ended up! The video quality varies quite a bit but all the guitar playing is recorded direct to the computer via USB with no mixing or any kind of extra processing added. It's straight Helix. Seek & Destroy for that gnarly, old-school metal Kill 'Em All tone Fade To Black with Hetfield's revamped and modded Marshall tone
  16. Bear with me here...there is a question further down I promise. For years I have been running a Bogner Ecstasy for live performance. In the last couple of years I have beefed up the setup with a head and rack combo case, ground control pro, voodoo labs control switcher, and a voodoo labs GCX audio switcher. I have a few stomp boxes on a rack shelf and everything is controlled via the ground controller to work the control switcher for amp channel selecting and GCX (Turning loops on and off). This setup sounds great, so there isn't anything broken here. I just purchased the Helix rack for studio mainly, to possibly replace my eleven rack I have had since its initial release. Now, for my question: To have some versatility, I was wondering the best way to run the helix into the ecstasy (which still feels wrong to think about doing it, although I am still waiting to get the helix shipped this week so I have never played one). Other option is to purchase a separate rack power amp and leave the Bogner head and effects rack at home. For now, what would be the best way to run this through the ecstasy head? I have tried to run the 11R in the past into the head and I could never get a good sound...but I am sure it was the way I was doing it. Thanks, G

    Midi Notes

I noticed something odd as was setting up some Ableton triggers this weekend. In order to trigger note D1, I had to set the Helix MIDI note to D2. Is this intentional? It just seemed unusual to myself.
  18. Hi, I'm interested in the G10 and own a Helix. I'm wondering about the cumulative latency of using both in my signal chain. That is, based on testing, is it perceptable at all in typical playing conditions? It's ok if you don't have a direct answer, but on the other hand if you can say with certainty I wouldn't be able to perceive it, that would be great information to consider as I look at buying one.
  19. I am wondering if you can run the helix four cable method into a kemper and also change kemper patches through midi? To be able to program different presets into the helix that change helix effects and kemper presets at the same time?????
  20. IR life is getting better. I acquired a Line 6 Spider Valve MKII HD100 6L6 tube head this weekend. It was a pawn shop special that needed some love, clean up, and biasing, but it is up and running perfectly now! I have to say this must be one of the most neutral tube amps I have ever heard. It's just a step more coloration than solid state and not nearly as much coloration as my Mesa amps. It has even less coloration than my Randall RM100 head (Egnater designed for different preamp modules), which I thought was really neutral. It must be the Bogner amp design to work well with Line 6 modelers...and it sounds FANTASTIC with Helix. Helix amp-only models>Helix 1/4" out >1/4" SV power amp in>Recto 212 is now my main rig, even over all of my other Mesa amps. I dropped about $40 on on 7 packs of 3 Sigma IR's today. I really liked the online sound clips and comparisons and their site info. But when I got them into Helix, I was still pretty uninspired from the tones, similar vibes to other IR's like the Ownhammer and Redwire demos, as well as Helix cabs. I actually was able to get sounds I liked better with the Helix cabs. I think they would probably be really good if i were to run my physical amps into them. Regardless, I went into the sound cave with new inspiration, determined to make IR's that I liked better with Helix amps. Anyway...blah, blah, blah, gimme the IR's fool......okay!!! https://www.dropbox.com/sh/lstuzn05tdpin9v/AAALqjD9kW55RArTaY6MtTUEa/v3/L6SVMII%20Recto212?dl=0 Two mics this time: Shure SM57 and Audix D1. The Audix D1 has stays stronger in the low to low-mid frequency range than the SM57. This results in a little more low end, and boosted midrange. The SM57 has a bit of scoop to it. The Audix D1 does have more highs to it as well. Actually, i think the Audix D1 makes a good guitar cab mic. You can Google the frequency response curves of each and see for yourself. The off-axis (oa) 2 positions of each seem to be closest to amp/cab in room sound. The L6SV_R212_oa2D57 will probably be my new front of house PA XLR path block now, and I will send Helix amp-only to the power amp of my SV amp/Recto 212. These IR's made with the L6 SVMKII HD100 power section are very neutral, especially for a tube amp. These IR's work really well with all Helix amp models with little coloration. I think they really let the nuances and fine controls of the Helix amp models shine through and give more control of sound back to Helix. As I have done with previous v3 IRs, mics were positioned and oriented for the best Helix amp model into power amp/cab tones. Not just typical generic positions. Next week we'll get back to colored IR's. My new Mesa Triple Recto Multiwatt will be up to bat. Have a great weekend!!! 21. Did I miss something in 1.11 or is the tuner improved? I noticed cents, offsets, a tuner, a few other items. Or was I just blind to these features before? :o Dennis
  22. Hello all I play my Helix on a Variax guitar, the JTV89F. I play classic rock covers and have the Helix set up with 2, 3 or 4 presets per song. I'm currently using the built in expression pedal as an output volume control and everything works fine. What I would like to do is free up the expression for other things (I know that the expression pedal is really 2 pedals in one but it is problematic when using the toe switch as it can affect the volume before and after the change). I have experimented with using the volume control on the Variax to control the volume block output but can't find a way to do that in a global way like you can with the built in expression pedal. I currently have the Variax tone and volume controls saved in each preset as I try to keep on stage adjustments to a minimum. The question is, is there a way to control the output volume of the Helix with the Variax volume knob that carries over from patch to patch?
  23. This post mainly comes from a question/idea I had... It seems like the profiling has already been done for the mics and the power amps from the cabs and the amps sections in the helix. If all the profiling has been done already I think it would be really cool to have the power amp sections of the amps and the microphones available as a effects blocks. If they have not already been profiled then I'm sure there are cooler things to be looking into, but if all the data has already been collected it would be super awesome to get these in. I may be wrong but I would imagine that all of the amps power amp sections are already profiled and would just be [amp]-[preamp] of existing blocks. I think It would be really interesting to be able to mix and match different power and pre amps to get different sounds. Also I have found the helix to be really great with recording guitar, bass, and vocals I do not know if the microphones on the cabs were profiled by themselves or if they were profiled as a cab/mic combo. But if the mics were individually profiled It would be really cool to be able to have these available as separate blocks. This could be really awesome for vocals or when using the helix as an interface for recording a live amp.
  24. Hello guys. I was playing always with backing tracks and didnot realize that until I played only using helix. I will give you my signal path: 1A: MultiGuitarInput ---> Drive---> Essex30--->EQ---->Loop1(Korg A2)--->Reverb------------>Output 1B: ----->MultDly4----->EQ--->Reverb (Octo)-->Output *After the EQ block (after the amp) the signal is split to path 1B, into MultiDly. The Patch 1B is all assigned to one footswitch labeled "shimmer". I start playing with this path 1B turned off. When I turn it on, works great, really smooth shimmer - really beautiful. But the problem is when I turn this path off. When I press the footswitch to turn off the path 1B, I get a really loud peak of sound. Yesterday I tried to use a volume pedal block to play with 100% and 0%, thinking that maybe I got that loud peak because of the blocks being disabled and the signal going through directly to the output. Anyway, tested but still getting this loud peak sound when turning the path off. Does anyone have an idea of what it can be? I will post a video showing this problem. Any help/tip is welcome! Tks! Cheers! Leo
  25. Is it possible to set the Guitar Thru Out in the back of the Helix Rack to send the tone from the Variax? I've got an external tuner that I like and can't figure out how send the Variax tone to it when I use the digital cable. It works like normal when I use a ¼ inch cable but then I don't get the automatic variax switching. How can I send the tone? Also, all of my effects loops are full...
