  1. Does anyone know of a successful way to route the USB Channels to Helix's sends for backtrack use? From ableton I'm trying to send click out 1, bass out 2, guitars/production out 3/4, and BG vocals out 5/6. I can't seem to get any of the routing to happen without manually creating a path on the second open chain in each patch. This only results in two active outputs. Is it not possible to make this happen?
  2. Working up an instrumental version of Little Wing to perform for an upcoming open mic night. Thought I'd lay down a version for practice and see how it's coming along. First few sections I play like the SRV version and then deviate. A lot of improv so I never play a "perfect" version, but it is what it is :) Signal chain was JTV Variax Strat neck position pickup into Line 6 Helix recorded directly over USB into Ableton Live. No processing done in Ableton whatsoever. I'd love to hear any feedback. https://soundcloud.com/chuskey/little-wing-with-line-6-helix
  3. Hello all, This is my first post in the community, and I'm wondering where I can learn how to automate my Helix Rack to properly and effectively change presets as well as manipulate the values of individual chain loaded effects. Here is what I'm looking to accomplish with Helix (for live use) and as of right now I know nothing of where to start: I'm running my show with Ableton live 9 lite. I want to use MIDI tracks (envelope automation) in Ableton to change my patches throughout the songs and set, as well as automate the toggling the on/off of stompboxes and delay/reverb swells & ramp-ups of the mix percentage within each patch. All I know is that I need to assign the parameters in which I want to control to the open MIDI CC channels in Helix, but I do not know how to technically achieve this the most effective and proper way. Any input or direction to reading materials on this subject is greatly appreciated. Like i said, I know nothing about this process. Thanks! 4. My first Post. Just got my helix 2 days ago and I have hooked up my Mission EP1 L6 to try and control the univibe speed (trying to sort of use it like a Leslie). even though I have assigned EP2 to control the vibe speed it seems that both EPs are controlling the speed. I have the Uvibe on off control assigned to FS4 The same goes for the Wah which I have assigned to EP1 but again both pedals are controlling the sweep. Any advice?
  5. Just picked up a helix this weekend and so far I'm loving it! First order of business was to recreate my main patch that I've been using for years on my HD500X. It's based on a Dr. Z model and I've been really happy tone wise. Quite honestly it was the additional features, routing, options, etc that drew me to Helix. I wasn't unhappy with my tone at all. So anyway I built the patch in Helix and thought it would be fun to A/B them. Here's a link to it on Soundcloud. Dr.Z amp and cab, some reverb, delay, and a couple of tube screamers. I'll take a few guesses on which is which before I say what's what, just for fun :) https://soundcloud.com/chuskey/helix-vs-hd500 Technical bits: Used a Variax via the VDI. Captured the dry signal via USB and reamped, so it's the same performance for both tracks.
  6. This seems like a good place for us to ask for certain patches to be created by the whizz kids..,, I have a few I'd like but can't quite get : Nuno Bettencourt Tom morello Rammstein (rank)
  7. I was hoping people who owned the Helix could answer a few questions about it for me. I'm sorry, there's a bunch...thanks in advance for your patience: - Will I have any issues going direct into a venue's PA (assuming it's a decent PA of course), using the XLR-out of the Helix? I currently use a Laney IRT studio amp with an XLR output for live gigs, so I understand the ups and downs of going direct...but most of the time my studio amp sounds exactly like when I used to travel with a Laney IRT half-stack! As much as I love that studio amp, I was hoping for something more versatile...as long as it can still perform as well. - Can I use the "EXT Amp" output to plug the Helix into a half stack and essentially treat the Helix like "just" an effects pedal? Almost every practice studio we use has a terrible PA, so going direct isn't an option. We often just end up using whatever house amps they have, which are usually terrible. It would be much easier if we can use the Helix as an effects pedal and just set the half stack's to clean and let the pedal do all the work. I guess the same with small venue's with bad PA's / house amps. - Can I get a decent "metal" sound from it? I like the sound of almost any good tube amp: Marshall, Laney, etc. Can this emulate that type of "modern metal" sound well? - Does it have a noise gate pedal? I looked at the owners manual and this wasn't clear. I currently use an ISP Decimator II and it's amazing; There's lots of stops in our songs and without this pedal I get feedback every time I stop playing. Is there something like that built into the Helix, or will I have to keep my Decimator? - Will it work with Pro Tools 12, recording in 24-bit, 96k? I currently use a Focusrite Solo and a Focusrite 18i20, both of which work perfect for my guitar / vocal recording needs. It would be awesome if this pedal could do that too, both for recording clean, recording with the sounds I program into the Helix and for re-amping. - Can I use the mic input to record just vocals in Pro Tools? I'll keep my 18i20 for when I need to record multiple tracks at the same time, but it would be cool if this could replace the solo. - I'm not sure I understand the purpose of the mic input for live use. Is this just for people playing acoustic gigs that want both their guitar and vocals coming through a PA? Are there any advantages to using this is a hard rock / metal environment? Basically, I want to replace my studio amp and pedal board with the Helix and possibly replace my Focusrite Solo for tracking guitars in ProTools. I'd also like to find any creative ways to utilize the mic input.
  8. Hi there, I've ordered a pair of StageSource L2m speakers. My initial intension was to connect them via L6 link to the Helix. However I still want to include my Boss RC-300 in the setup. So I think I have to ditch L6-link and go from the Helix with 2x 1/4" out into the RC-300 L/R instrument ins and from the 1/4" outs into the L2m 1/4" (or XLR) in, right? Or am I missing some cabling option here? Maybe connecting the RC-300 in a send/return loop of the Helix instead? Is anybody using a similar setup with Helix, RC-300 and StageSource FRFRs? Best regards, Ace
  9. Hi all, help please!!!! I want to setup helix on a pedalboard for easy of use obviously with the added expression pedals now setup and the extra pedals coming in from the effects loops. I had planned on getting 1 of the larger pedaltrains but im now worring about the issue of helix obviously being angled as per any other multi effects pedal chassis layout but the pedaltrain will be on an angle as well, so is there any other good options or has anyone already set this up on a pedaltrain and found that its not an issue??? Thanks
  10. Hello, Any option to command the Reverb/Vibrarto of my Fender Twin Reverb with the Helix within the patches and forget about the 2-button footswitch? All the best!
  11. I want a preset to always be saved with the Preset Variax Model set to Don't Force, even after using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model. I usually test preset changes with several Variax models, but I don't want the Variax model saved with the preset. I am using a Variax guitar and Variax cable with a Helix preset that has the Input, Per Preset, Variax Settings all set to Don't Force and the Global Variax settings all set to Don't Force. Using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model also changes the Helix Input, Per Preset, Preset Variax Model to the same model. Then when I save the preset, the Per Peset Variax model is saved with it, and any time I load that preset, the Variax guitar is forced by the Helix to use that Variax model. I don't want this; I want the preset to always be saved with the Preset Variax Model set to Don't Force, even after using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model. My work-around is to change the Preset Variax Model back to Don't Force every time I save a preset, but that is very tedious when I'm saving often. Is there a way to make the Helix always saving the Preset Variax Model as Don't Force after using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model? Thanks. P.S. I love the Helix! Great job, Line 6, and thanks for an excellent support forum and for continuing development even though you are probably already working on the successor to the Helix that we'll see five years from now.
  12. We discovered that there is a serial number mismatch on a group of Helix Rack units that will affect their ability to be registered. If your unit's serial number includes 6603-6607, please register the serial number label that is attached on the unit, not the serial number label attached to the box. If you run into further registration issues, please contact our support team with a support ticket at www.Line6.com/support/tickets. We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience.
  13. I am looking to use a one of the Helix footswitch to call a certain guitar model stored in my JTV Variax? Thanks.
  14. I have a strange problem. I made a preset as seen on the picture: The signal paths are as follows: Path 1A is a seperate path to be usaed for a microphone so I can put some effects on my voice. Path 1B is for guitar and continues to path 2A. Pathe 2A splits after the amp to path 2B with a Y-split. Path 2B Contains some post amp effects. I do this to have a signal without the delays going to the output as wel as a singnal with delays. This makes my guitar playing more articulate, not completely being delayed. Both 2A and 2B ar set to Digital output because I send to my DT25 through Line6 Link. The problem (bug?): If I change the output to something else I can't return to Digital. Somehow the digital output is not available, eventhough it's selected allready. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong? Is it a bug?
  15. Hey All, I'm really digging my month-old Helix and have enjoyed experimenting with the plentiful Helix CustomTone patches. As you you soon discover with the patches, the audio input vs output levels are all over the place, which makes them difficult to use right out of the box in band practice and performance. I;d like to tweak them to get them all into some usable range, but I need a plan. Does anyone have a good strategy for normalizing the volume of the patches - bring them to a relatively equal level? Is "unity gain" a good starting point for determining an output volume? It seems clear to me that some patches will warrant higher gain to get the desired effect. Is there a technical standard somewhere? Should tweaking be done before the amps and cabs or after? So many questions! Mike in Maryland
  16. Doing some tests I found out the audio with the VDI cable is just awful. With the regular pickups it sounds bright as hell, and at a lesser level it will dull the variax models. Using a regular cable makes the Variax experience much better IMO, witch is frustrating, because I got the Variax with the Helix because I wanted to be able to change my Variax settings through Helix, as well as the benefit of not having to worry about the battery. Is there a work around or am I stuck?
  17. Since my Helix has been away since the 11th of Feb and since I have been unable to get an update from the service centre I've had to put together my G2 board You know what It sounds bloody amazing I'm so utterly pissed off at Line6 just now I might just relegate the Helix to backup duties They supply a faulty product and the working musician has to take it in the shorts while they fan you about trying to fix it Without even the basic manners of simple communication Received your helix investigating Found a fault with X Ordering spare component Etc It wouldn't kill someone to have simple common decency to let me know what the status is Instead you tip it into a black hole and hope it doesn't come out the other end with new faults you have to raise tickets for Total pish boys Total pish Anyway here's my own pedalboard https://flic.kr/p/DrmW8Y
  18. Has anyone had success with their Helix communicating with their mac (for anything)? I am using 10.9.5. I have tried both Helix app 1.0.3 and the new line 6 updater and neither are showing a unit connected (via USB). I think this is a line 6 issue because under 'about this mac/more info/system report/USB/' it clearly shows a Helix unit connected to the 'USB hi-speed bus'---so it's not a bad cord or an Apple issue. Consequently I haven't upgraded to the newest firmware (still on 1.0.4) or checked out you alls tones.
  19. Recently I hooked up the Helix to a DT25 amp using the L6 Link, and I've lost the ability to select topology in Channel A, thus rendering it useless. It currently has no topology light on it to select. No matter what preset I select on the Helix (template, factory or user), I can't get Channel A to activate. Any suggestions on how to recover?
  20. Hey guys, I wanted a place to visit that listed all of the models inside the Helix as well as the product each of them were based on. I couldn't find anything on the web so I made something: http://helixhelp.com The site is current with firmware 1.06.0 and I'll continue to update it and add features as time progresses. I'm not affiliated or associated with Line 6 or any of the products modeled by them. This is just a fan site. I hope you find it convenient and useful.
  21. Helix/HX Firmware 2.80 and Helix 1.80 "The Missed Connections Update" Full update instructions, details, and links here.
  22. I have two quick questions: 1. Is there a typical firmware/software release schedule for Helix? 2. Is there a mailing list that we can sign up for that will let us know when a new software update is available? Thanks!
  23. Hey guys! I am contemplating selling my DT25 combo and HD500x for a Helix, thoughts? I also have a JTV 59, if that influences the decision.
  24. I'm looking to change the layout of the footswitches on the Helix. More specifically, i'd like the bank up and down to be located along the right side of the pedal and vice versa. Is this possible? A couple of issues i've run into I've run into an issue when setting the whammy pitch, where it defaults to +24 toe and -24 heel. No matter what i did editing wise, it would keep going back to that like it was a default setting. I'm not sure what i did to trigger it, but it's happened multiple times and i've had to leave the patch and start over to get it working properly. The unit produces a mid pitched hum, much like a grounding issue. It changes in volume and tone when switching between different menu settings. I have a separate pedalboard with an M13 and 4 other pedals, and have never had this issue. I've plugged it into other outlets but to no avail.
  25. I made it with the new matchstick amp on path 1 and put all the same FX on each path and have a toggle control the same FX on each path. I put a toggle called High Gian that swaps paths, the path 2 amp is supposed to be clean and you can hit the Timmy distortion to get a little overdriven sound and you can hit the High Gain for more of a hard rock/metal sound. Also setup a lead boost toggle. Kind of like a 3 channel amp. Let me know if you think it sounds good, I don't know how good my ear for tone is. I am using a charvel with an emg 81 to make it. https://www.dropbox.com/s/txuw9vlyhg4iwoy/DUDE%27S%20MATCHLESS.hlx?dl=0
