  1. Hey guys, Here is a new Helix video for you! It's an alternative rock song using my Fender American Special Stratocaster. I'm running that into the Helix using the new wonderful OwnHammer Class-A Duo IR's. I'm using a couple of different amps but for the main tones I chose the Mandarin 80 model. It sounds pretty nice with my strat and those OH IR's. After the song I also demonstrate the presets. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A40IbRkB1Ys
  2. Hey, I connected Helix via USB+camera connection kit to my ipad and the Quantiloop (ver 2) looper app. When doing that, the buffer size parameter on quantiloop is stuck at buffer size 128 (not a problem to change to 256, 512, 1024 while not connected to helix). When I record a track in quantiloop like this, I can send the midi commands from helix to the app on the ipad without any problems, but I get the recorded sound back with clicks/pops... and I think it has to do with the buffer size... This is annoying, but except for that quantiloop looks like a cool app! (BTW - no problem when using Loopy HD in a similar way...)
  3. Hey guys, I just got the Helix for my project studio yesterday. I have the flooorboard model for now, as there was a mix up with my order. Next week I will be returning the floorboard model when the rack version gets here. I have been doing a ton of research on it, and I have several years experience with recording bands. I built my on pc for it, and I am pretty tech savvy. I purchased the Helix to upgrade from Podfarm plugin for guitar tracking. First, please allow me to explain my setup so you will understand better what I am asking. Because I do not have a properly treated room for live mic recording (mainly solid drum recording), I use electronic drums connected to my PC through midi to trigger VSTi plugins like Superior Drummer 2.0 and I do a lot of direct recording for guitars. For a while now, I would record guitars direct/dry and use Podfarm plug-in to generate the guitar tones. My main audio interface is a Focusrite 18i20, and I have 4 main JBL monitors connected to that for playback/monitoring. I also have a 6 channel headphone amp routed from the Focusrite interface for monitoring as well. I run Reaper as my recording DAW. I know the Helix is actually a recording interface as well when connected through USB, and I know it can be used to record guitar tracks through the USB port by switch to it in Reaper. I also know that if I switch to Helix as an interface, my guitar players will have to use the Helix headphone jack for monitoring during tracking, because the Helix will take over the Daw and NOT send the audio through my Focusrite which has the monitors and headphone amp connected to it. However, here is where I am not sure what I should do... Like I said, in the past I have used Podfarm plug-in after recording guitars direct/dry so we can change the guitar tones on the fly during the mix after the guitar tracks have been finished. I know there is the Helix Native plug-in coming out soon, and I am assuming I can use the same approach as I have in the past where I would be able to use it to change a tone on the fly after it has been tracked. But, until Helix Native comes out, or until I decide to buy it or not, I was wondering what I should do for tracking. Does the Helix have the option to send a processed tone to my daw as well as an unprocessed tone at the same time? And if so, how would we take the un-processed tone and send back to Helix to change the tone? Should we use the interface options in Helix to do this? Or should we send Helix to my Focusrite via XLR? I am sorry if I have confused anyone. Any help/feedback will be appreciated!
  4. I've got a couple of 4x12 cabs with Celestion v30s that I love - one is a Marshall 1960AV the other a Line6 spider valve A cab with v30s. I'm running them with a Marshall JVM 410 and JCM2000 TSL 100 - using some 1960s long plate Sylvania 12AX7 tubes in V1. Both sound remarkable with the Marshall preamp sections, but I have been running my Firehawk FX into the power amp section for both when I want to use other amplifier tones. I want to buy a Helix, but I don't want to run them into the power amp section of the Marshall Amps, but rather to have a power amp that will drive one of the 4x12 cabs at 16ohms or both sides of a stereo cab at 8ohms each side. What would be the ideal amp for this setup - I'm thinking that 2x50 would be more than sufficient for my purposes.
  5. First about me. I played for thirty five years. Owned almost every Marshall, Mesa, Fender + a lot of boutique amps ( Matchless, Bad Cat +++) Liked most of them, but Guitarist always want something new, right? Also worked for over 15 year selling guitars and amps. Now the Helix. While the Helix is my favorite toy and more than satisfying in my studio, I only used it as a pedalboard in live situations. It´s by far my best and most versatile pedalboard ever :-) Let me also mention that i do not use stereo setup live. My Problem: While some of you like it the FRFR thing does not work for me. Tried Line6, EV, Yamaha and other brands but i dont like the "miked" sound. My Solution: I stumbled over a old forgotten Mesa Boogie. The Simul Satellite. Made in the early 90´s for use with the Mesa Mark IV for a stereo setup. It´s like having a 112 cab with a built in power amp. And you can use it as a singel channel amp as well. It is Perfect for my needs. While most tube amps bypass the tonestack when using the effect return the Mesa Simul Satellite have a 5 band footswitchable eq + presence and a master volume. Switchable from 90w down to 15w The one i got also have the EV12L speaker. IMHO the best speaker ever..200w and clean no matter what i put in to it. To my ears it does not color the sound like my V30, Greenback ++ This is of course a matter of taste. Cons: With the 8.6 kg EV12L speaker it is a bit on the heavy side.( Not more than a quality 12" PA speaker) Have to choose between 6L6, EL34 or 6V6 tubes.( Can also mix 6L6 and EL34) Pros: It´s a tube amp made for the use of the effect loops!! Amp sounds good alone, and take pedals were well. Compact size. 15w to 90w . The EV12L sounds good from bedroom level to stage level. Can gig with only one amp, using different preamps in the Helix. Now i have the Helix amp simulations as a Backup for the Mesa, and my Tech 21 fly rig 5 as a backup for the backup. Hope this can help others "old school" BluesRock players like me out there searching...
  6. Hi everyone, I think the ultimate way to test any modeler is in the context of a full band mix. That is why I recorded this song and made a video for you guys. This song covers some clean tones, heavy distorted riffs and little things in between. For all the guitar and bass parts I used the Helix combined with the wonderful OwnHammer Impulse Responses. I think the Helix holds up very well in the mix, what do you think? I'd also like to add that the Helix is an outstanding unit for bass! If you have any questions about this mix I'd be happy to answer them here. I'm also planning on doing a mix tutorial series on my channel that will cover every single aspect of the mix, including mixing and processing the guitar and bass parts. If you're interested in that stay tuned and subscribe. I hope you enjoy this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVs8I8-mKgs

    HD Edit software

So I sold my pod hd500x recently because I'm saving up for a Helix. However the buyer said he couldn't get the HD Edit software to work on it. I had no problem with it when I owned it. I checked and it is no longer registered as one of my devices however it was still authorized in license manager. I attempted to de-authorize it but it just says de-authorization pending... I've also deleted the hd edit software from my computer. What else can I do to help my buyer with this problem?
  8. I'm using the Multi-output to USB and I notice that my dry signal is always coming through on the right channel. Even when my volume pedal is at 0% and my XLR outs are quiet, the dry signal still comes in over USB. Has anyone else observed this on their Macs? I've tried both custom and factory patches, and they both have this issue.
  9. Hello, Has anybody any experiences with power amp and FRFR active speakers with helix ? I´ve been thinking to buy Palmer Macht 402 from thomann cause its kind of cheap comparing to premium models like matrix amplification GT1000FX-1U. They are promising tube sound but is that just a market mens sales talk ? :) -lax
  10. Help needed! Firmware 2.11. Brand new unit. Reason for posting is that I can't find this problem described anywhere else on the internet. Been programming on helix (using out of the box 2.01) for an upcoming tour and tech rehearsal for the last few days. Solid 8 hour sessions of tone finding, each day. Zero problems. I had my guitar in the Guitar In, L/Mono 1/4" to amp, Send 1 to Powered Monitors. Pretty standard, nothing too strenuous. Randomly, this clicking starts coming through my amp. Very quietly. Then disappears. About 10 minutes later it has overtaken the entire output board and no signal is heard from the guitar. [uPDATE: even through the USB outs... which have not been an issue for me as I only need the unit for live mainly, but worth seeing if the problem was there, too... which it is!] I've tried every combination of things to find a solution - every jack cable in every jack in and out... every xlr cable in each output... this click is everywhere and no sound is coming through from the signal chain that's loaded. I even tried updating to 2.11, which didnt work. So I tried a rollback to 2.01, 2.00... but to no avail. The click starts during the loading screen, about halfway through (time wise). It sounds like a digital sample rate mess up somewhere in the deep dark internals... Any help I would be so unbelievably grateful for!!! Thank you!
  11. Hi everyone, Just released a new video. This one focuses on (modern) Metal sounds with the Cali IV amp model. I tried to make it as heavy as possible... After the song I also explain the preset and OH IR's I used. If you have any questions I'd be more than happy to answer them! Note that the bass parts were also done with the Helix. Enjoy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN6hIRc9nv8
  12. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I'm on a patch and then change to another patch and the unit hangs. The sound still works but all of the buttons are inoperable and the helix control floor unit does nothing. I had the same problem in 2.10 but now it's worse. Not Going to take this thing live with this kind of stuff happening. I had heard that Pete Thorn went back to his pedal board setup alone without the Helix. I wonder if it was because of little issues like this. Anyone else experiencing the same problems?
  13. Hey guys, I recently bought my Helix and so far I'm really happy with it. The song is the first I wrote with the Helix. Every guitar and bass you hear comes directly from the Helix with some Ownhammer IRs. For the drums I used Superior Drummer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQD5-HzWnLw Hope you enjoy it :) I'm glad about any kind of feedback. And happy new year of course!!
  14. Hi everyone! I'm new here but definitely not new to Line 6 as I have used their gear extensively for the past 15 years or so. I got my brand new Helix a few days ago and I am very happy with it! I made a video for my YouTube channel in which I give my initial impressions, show off some sounds (in a full mix, bass included) and I also talk a bit about using IR's with the Helix. I hope you enjoy this video, I sure had a blast making it. I'll be doing way more Helix videos in the future so if you are interested in seeing more please hit subscribe. If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them all. Cheers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYv_oCBCQ2M
  15. Having a possible brain fart here, back when 2.01 came out I successfully updated my Helix. But now I have a new PC and am attempting to download the 2.11 editor first before the actual update. I have my presets and IRs backed up on my mac already, So the download page is a head-scratcher for me, no Editor link anywhere. Anyone? Thanks in advance!
  16. Hi Guys, anybody tried synchronizing tempo on Helix with MIDI CC from DAW? I used to this with POD HD and it worked fine but doesn't seem to work with Helix. Here is what I do: Helix manual says Tap Tempo is MIDI CC #64 with values 64-127. So I assume any value in this range is fine. As DAWs often don't send the same CC value repeatedly, I send values 127-126-127-126 etc. in sequence. Nothing happens, preset tempo stays the same. Just to check on something more obvious I change the CC to 57 (FS10) and voila, now the footswitch diode blinks rhytmically. So my setup seems fine, sending CCs works fine for #CC 57 but #CC 64 doesn't seem to affect Helix. Anybody tried and succeeded or has any hints? I'm on the latest firmware 1.10 and drivers (coming with Helix app 1.11). Helix is connected via USB to my Win 8.1 laptop. I tried sending the MIDI CC messages from FL Studio and Cubase, the same result (i.e. nothing...). Thanks for any help. I think I'm gonna raise a support ticket now...
  17. I bought helix, but I get an error in updating. Moreover helix can not start. And the following message is now displayed. â€Boot failur.enterd update mode!†I did it all as instructed on the homepage. But somehow I can not update it. I have not heard any sound yet. I'm sad...
  18. I've seen a lot of people mentioning to connect their ipad/iphone through the USB on their Helix to use Loopy, metronomes, etc. just curious how, and what you need, to actually set this up. Thanks in advanced!
  19. Just picked up a helix this weekend and so far I'm loving it! First order of business was to recreate my main patch that I've been using for years on my HD500X. It's based on a Dr. Z model and I've been really happy tone wise. Quite honestly it was the additional features, routing, options, etc that drew me to Helix. I wasn't unhappy with my tone at all. So anyway I built the patch in Helix and thought it would be fun to A/B them. Here's a link to it on Soundcloud. Dr.Z amp and cab, some reverb, delay, and a couple of tube screamers. I'll take a few guesses on which is which before I say what's what, just for fun :) https://soundcloud.com/chuskey/helix-vs-hd500 Technical bits: Used a Variax via the VDI. Captured the dry signal via USB and reamped, so it's the same performance for both tracks.
  20. Does anyone know if there is an archive anywhere of all the previous firmware updates, including the original factory firmware for the Helix? Also, I'm guessing it is necessary to pre-install whatever Helix editor goes along with the respective firmware, so is there also an archive of all previous versions of the Helix editor? Thanks in advance for any help.
  21. Hi Guys , After being frustrated with being asked to pay for help/ advice on other Helix Facebook groups, I've decided to start one for all of us! The goal here is to create a positive atmosphere where people are genuinely helpful to each other, and not hoping to make money off of "helping" others. As usual, the things I'm hoping will get done on this group are: 1. Preset sharing and improvement 2. Free IR sharing 3. Links to really great/ the best tone packs/ IRs (as voted on by members) 4. General help and advice 5. Troubleshooting Please join and share the word. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1730763273911707/ Let's make this a success...:)

    Helix question

I'm jonesin' for a Helix but am selling off some gear to raise funds for it. Anyhow, I have the POD HD500X and I'm thinking of selling it but was just wondering how the Helix compares in size to the POD HD500X. I have a nice carrying case for it and wondered if the Helix would fit because I like the case...

    Big Muff Tone

Hey Everyone, I was running my Black Russian Big Muff (chicken head knobs) through the effects loop of the helix, as this is a big part of my sound, and was comparing/trying to get a similar tone out of the helix triangle fuzz. I noticed a couple big differences and was hoping some of you might be able to steer me in the right direction. The biggest difference and one that bugged me the most is how much more bottom end and punch the Russian BM had, I attempted at running a compressor and then an EQ(firstly by themselves, then together) before/after the Triangle Fuzz and didn't seem to be able to get it to do what I wanted at all. I also noticed that the sustain on the Russian at about 2 O'clock seemed to be hotter than the Triangle Fuzz at 10. This might be slightly due to the low end loss though. I tried out my rat in the effects loop against the Vermin Dist and noticed very similar results, losing that low end grit to it. Just curious if you lovely people have any suggestions for beefing those up! Thanks in advanced!
  24. I will create a new patch, give it a name, build it exactly as I want, then hit the save button, but the patch reverts to the empty default setting. I can hunch over the Helix, create it and save it and the Editor accepts the new patch. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it? Frankly, it's a lot easier to create patches on the computer and you don't have to put the Helix on the desk and then hunch and hold your forearms up in the air while trying not to touch the touch-sensitive foot switches.
  25. We guitarists have grown up with stomp boxes and FX of various types. The oldest among us remember the day when reverb and tremolo were the only thing available. The idea of overdriving an amp was not even dreamed of (I'm admitting my age). When Electric Ladyland came out people had simply never heard sounds like that. Period. No modulation or time distortion. We had absolutely no concept of how they heck they did this. Frankly, for rock musicians at the time the world stopped on a dime. Holy ___! What was that? One can't describe the experience of turning out the lights, stretching out between the stereo speakers and listening for the very first time to And the Gods Made Love - the manual flanging and the Echoplex - nobody had any idea how they did this. After Woodstock I heard about the UniVibe and got one, repairing it over and over until it died. Later, when the very first Tascam Portastudio came out (another stunning advance) I figured out how to gently tweak the speed up and down when recording a second track to achieve the flanging and it was mind-blowing (manually hitting the phase right on a cymbal hit was like a drug). I recorded a track with a plastic recorder (flute), manually bending notes by rolling the finger tips. Flanging that track beat the pants off of the flute part on If Six Was Nine (young musicians need to hear that song). No stomp box could duplicate that. But now with modern gear such as Helix you can time-mod a loop and play on top of it to get the effect live without a stomp box simulation. As for overdrive, in the early 80's I had my 50W Marshall half-stack modded with a master in order to create overdrive at club volumes and when I received my Boogie MkII it was truly fantastic. Today we are used to all this stuff and I would imagine that there are around 500 stomp boxes to choose from. Helix, its predecessors, and its competitors can offer a ton of stomp FX in a single package, plus modeling, which has redefined the world of live and recorded music. Frankly, the idea of paying $1,500 for such a great device is a bargain. A few years back I saw a posting looking for a guitarist that stated that the applicant "must have a real amp". It sounded funny at the time, but that was when I thought that making two trips to haul my gear to a rehearsal was normal. Now, as long as you have a Helix and a FRFR that can push some air, that's all that really matters. It makes me think that I could make a mint by creating a fake Marshall half-stack that weighs 20 pounds and has a shelf for mounting a FRFR inside. I apologize for using a forum for airing such thoughts, but young musicians are used to being in a world of great FX and in which guitarists didn't grow up learning the licks from Gimme Shelter and thinking they were guitar heroes, but learning the licks of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. (There are way too many gunslingers these days and too few artists.) Perhaps the budding guitar gods of today might not realize that musicians born before 1957 were here when there was not anything whatsoever orbiting the earth but the moon, when the coolest gizmo in town was a 2.5 inch square portable AM radio with a wrist strap, and where the only sound you could get from an amp was a clean one with no breakup whatsoever. The Helix, along with its competitors, is a godsend and it's nice to be living in a world where older musicians do not have to retire simply because their backs are shot from years of loading and unloading a a couple of hundred pounds of gear three to five times a week. (The Boogie combo was heavy enough, not to mention the Marshall, plus my rack, Strat and Paul.) A Helix, a L3t and a guitar case will do it for me, all on one lightweight hand truck – plus it keeps me in the game.
