    Importing IRs

Hi All, I'm new to using Amp models and IRs. I own a HX Stomp and i'm crazy about it. I've purchased some IRs from Celestion and Own Hammer and have used them with the amp sims that come with HX Stomp. They sound amazing. I'm very happy. My question is regarding the settings when importing IRs. I see there are two slots one labeled 1024 and the other for 2048. Also, the IR files that I have come in a variety of kHz, ms and Bit rate formats. For example, in my Celestion pack there is a choice of importing 200 ms files vs 500 ms files and within those folders, there are several options for kHz and Bit rates. I read page 27 of the HX Stomp Users Manual that states: "HX Edit updates the HX Stomp hardware's IR list automatically. HX Stomp can load and store up to 128 IRs at a time. 48kHz, 16-bit, mono, .WAV type IRs of up to 2,048 samples are natively supported; however, HX Edit lets you import IR .WAV files of different sample rate, bit depth, length and stereo format, and the app will convert these attributes automatically before sending to HX Stomp". -and- "The imported IR is automatically shortened (or lengthened) to 2,048 samples. You may optionally choose a 1,024-sample version from the model list to save DSP, which fades out the IR halfway through". Ok so, this may sound like stupid questions but like I said earlier, I'm new to all this and don't quite understand what Line 6 is saying. Can someone school me on what all this means and how I should select the IR files for importing to my HX Stomp and how it could effect my tone? Thank you.

    Hx fx- impulse response questions

Im new to the hx fx and could really use some recommendations and help regarding impulse responses. I run my guitar through a bbe sonic maximizer and then through a vox Ac50 ( with upgaded tubes, and V30’s :) ) I run the hx fx in 4cm. My band rehearses D.I. Into the mixer ( drummer plays a roland TD30, so its really nice) but its still important for me to use the AC50 as the tone is incredible and regardless of the fact we all use “ in ears” live and in rehearsal im using a moderate amount of amp volume on stage and blending it with my D.I. Signal into the P.A./monitors. Thats why i was really excited to use impulse responses. Heres where i can use some help/recommendations and opinions. 1. Ive played around with placing the IR block before and after the Fx loop 1 block. so far I prefer it placed after, but i cant really tell much of a difference. Anyone have any info or experience with this? what is your preference? 2. I downloaded a bunch of IRs . I have some “speaker” ones (the allure pack) and those all seem pretty useable. One of the best results ive had so far is the V30 IR (from allure) I have the mix set to 100 and the volume somewhere around -6.5 -8.0 db I also find it totally necessary to use the low cut feature as the bass frequencies easily start to overdrive. Changing IR,s the confusion/frustration/doubt starts to set in. Heres some examples- Acoustic guitar resonace ir’s i have , including this hollowbody ir i have sound absolutely funky. Maybe they are crappy idk but its led me to believe that IR’s work best emulating something similar to your sound. I mean i run v30s out of my cab. So running a V30 IR after my effects loop block seems to make my D.I. Signal sound alot more like my amp and that is a wonderful result. but trying to make it sound like a jazz box, or a hummingbird acoustic, is experimental and probably wont yield good results. However, i did load a gods cab (its like a 6505 with a mesa cab and a sm7b mic) it needed a ton of low cut. And it really overdrove my signal easily. But at -8.0 db lvl with 100mix and a low cut, when i added a distortion, i got a killer sound. I mean awesome metal tone. some feedback or personal experience on this would be a godsend. 3. So to some it up into some more direct questions. whats with the overdriving? are some of these ir,s supposed to be distorted? where as some are just clean cabinet/mic “simulations” (or moments in time whatever you wanna call it) -8db seems awful low for a level setting should i be looking elsewhere? what kind of mix and level do you guys use? Is 2048 samples always better? Anything pertaining to using impulse responses with hx fx in 4cm especially settings would help alot. If in the end i can properly add an IR to all my presets resulting in my DI sounding more realistic and just having better tone altogether i would be very happy. just dont know if im doing it right.

    HX Stomp Question

Hello, I was wonderwing if with the HX Stomp i can get 1 signal chain with effects/amp modeling/IR impulse to go to the FOH, and a second signal with just effects/amp modeling to my power amp and cab (so without IR impulse). Thanks in advance!! Greetz Wouter
  5. Hey Guys, I get a lot of question about IR's (impulse responses) and how to use them or how I use them. So today I hit on 3 key topics to help explain a bit about it. We touch briefly on what an IR is, where I prefer to get the ones I use and 1. Loading and Organizing 2. Mixing Mic's / Stacking of IR's and checking phase 3. IR overload (Having TOO MANY options) If you guys have any questions, drop a comment and I will do my best to answer them. Thanks so much for all the support. nickhillmakesmusic@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/nickhillmakesmusic
  6. I just purchased a helix like a week ago and I’m starting to get the hang of it. I’ve been watching tutorials and and reading forums. My question was, does it matter where in the signal path I place the amp or cabs? Does it make a difference? Everything I’ve read or watched, people just seem to place it somewhere in the middle. Or do you have to think of it like a real pedal board, where the amp comes last? Please help.

    IR Names Shortened in Helix?

Hi - i got the Celestion pack of Suhr IRs... when i put them in helix, i can't see the full name in helix or in helix edit. for example the Suhr Badger V30 112 C Hi-Gn 421+121 Celestion shows up in the list, but only as Suhr Badger V30 112 C Hi-Gn. the problem is there are 4 or 5 versions of this (different mic/room combos) and it makes it impossible to know which is which when adding to a patch. I could shorten the name before importing, but it's nice to be able to refer to the original names. Any suggestions? Thanks!

HX FX & Stereo Use of IR's...Help!

Hello!, Relatively new HX user here. I am going to try this setup for an ampless rig: HX FX with Vox Stomplab used in the loop for Amp sims. I think it will work pretty well, but I have a question. How would I use 1 or 2 IR's for a stereo output, to the FOH mixer? I want to run stereo through the PA and don't want to sum it to mono.
  9. Hi all, Sorry for the question as i'm sure its been asked. So apologies. Long time L6 user first time Helix user..rack version, love it. Impulse Responses...my question: If I use an impulse response block, I assume I don't add it to a patch with a Amp & Cab block in use, or a patch which has separate Amp and Cab block...just use an Amp (amp on its own) block and then an impulse response block? Going into studio monitors and will go direct into house PA. Just wanted to get a handle on how to use them in a very simple basic set up ie wha>eq>Amp>IR>delay>reverb...NOT wha>eq>AMP+Cab>IR>delay>reverb. Sorry for thick question, any basic help much appreciated. # Thanks guys/gals.

    Helix cab sim without microphone

Hi, I was wondering if Helix offers a way to have a cabinet emulation but without any microphone coloration added to it? I am running a frfr scenario and the sound I get is much like what I would get from a monitor as it is "micked" (microphone algorythm in helix's cab block). The problem is that I wan't to be able to put a microphone in front of my frfr speaker in order to send this signal to FOH. I wanna do so because I mainly play small venues as opening act and most often, old school soundmen don't like this "d.i." thing. The problem is if i get a microphone to pick up a sound that is already sort of micked, then the actual mic coloration will add up to the simulated one and enhance some frequencies in an unpleasant way (high mids). Basically, I want my frfr to sound more like a real amp rather than like a micked amp through a monitor. I know I can bypass the cabinet block altogether but then I only have the preamp through the frfr and it sound's like s*** also, would the line 6 powercab remedy this situation? Thank you guys!

    HX effect and IR -

Hi there ! I know about IR as a mean to create cabinet simulation. I can't see how it applies to the HX effect. Is acoustic IR way to simulate typical acoustic guitar response ? For example, is an acoustic IR intended to simulate an acoustic guitar response from an electric ? Do you use acoustic IR ? what kind of usage ?

    HX Effects - IR doubt

Hi guys... I am trying to record some songs using an audio interface and that's what I am doing: Interface input A -> Vox AC15C2 mic'd with Shure SM57 Interface input B -> comes from the R (out) from HX effects I would like to use an IR just in the R channel, not in both. In Helix floor and LT I could do it easily but in HX Effects, seems that the L+R outs are mixed. Is there a way to use a IR just for the R channel, insteade both at the same time? Thanks !
  13. Hey guys, Today I have a “Dimebag” Darrel / Pantera inspired guitar tone. I threw together some fun Pantera riffs to demo the tone. It’s more of a hybrid of Dime’s tone as it evolved through Reinventing the Steel. This was a lot of fun. I used Ownhammer impulses on this one. Their stuff is the best. I used a blend of: OH 412 ENG V30 421-FRED OH 412 ENG V30 421-EDGE FRED for cutting through and the EDGE for the chunk and low end. I used the LINE 6 Fatality model. CHAIN: PRS Tremonti SE loaded with Fishman Fluence Moderns Line 6 Helix Rack using the Line 6 Fatality amp model and Ownhammer Impulses Into the Universal Audio Apollo Twin which feeds Persons Studio One 3 Drums are Toontrack Superior Drummer 3

  15. Hi All, I recently purchased the new HX FX and was doing some test using the 4CM with my amp (EVH 5150 III). I would like to get 4CM together with IR cab loader, in order to have a parallel path on the HX to feed my DAW or PA with cab simulation. Right now, to achieve this, what I came with is: - Set the OUTPUT L/R as line level and connect these to my DAW - Set the S/R Loop 2 to instrument level and connect the send 2 to my amplifier - In path A, put the IR loader - In path B, put the SEND2 Loop block But in this way, I am using ad additional block (the SEND2 loop block), I cannot use the 2nd loop anymore, and I have to change the global settings (and also the patch construction chain) in the case I need to return back to the standard 4CM. I wonder if there is better way to achieve 4CM together with IR cab simulation. Thanks for your help!

    Powercab FAQ

LINE 6 POWERCAB 112 / POWERCAB 112 PLUS So are these the Helix FRFR speakers we’ve been requesting for, like, years? Nope—Powercab is waaay beyond your bog standard FRFR speaker. When paired with any modeler, it’s an active speaker system that can deliver a much more authentic “amp-in-the-room” playing experience. However, when set to Flat mode (and whether you load IRs into Powercab or your modeler), Powercab amplifies the sound of your presets as they are, similar to a traditional FRFR speaker system—but with the response and feel closer to that of an actual guitar amp. Powercab works as both a backline amp and a wedge speaker, thanks to its integrated kickstands. Oh, and it looks like a guitar amp instead of a PA speaker. So that’s cool. What’s going on under the hood? Powercab doesn’t utilize cab modeling; it has true speaker modeling. Speaker Modeling is Line 6’s proprietary method of duplicating the frequency and behavior of speaker drivers by themselves, independently of the cabinets in which they happen to be loaded. Imagine having an empty 1x12 speaker cabinet where you can swap out the Greenback for a Creamback or a Swamp Thang or an Alnico Blue—instantly—and you’re close. I don’t own Helix. Will Powercab work with my Kemper, Atomic, or Fractal box? Absolutely! And any other modeler as well, including POD HD500X. In fact, if your modeler has a 48kHz AES/EBU out (or S/PDIF out with RCA-to-XLR M adapter), with Powercab 112 Plus you can run everything digitally, with no additional D/A/D conversion or latency. And if your modeler sends MIDI messages, you can even sync Powercab 112 Plus’s presets and user IRs with your modeler or profiler’s presets. Which six speakers are the models based on? Celestion® Vintage 30 Celestion® Greenback 25 Celestion® G12M-65 Jensen® P12Q Eminence® Swamp Thang Patriot Series Celestion® “Blue Bell” Alnico What’s the difference between Powercab 112 and Powercab 112 Plus? Powercab 112 Plus adds the following: 2-inch, 128 x 32-pixel LCD display 128 user preset locations 128 user IR locations MIDI In and Out for recalling presets, IRs, and most parameters (can also be recalled via USB) AES/EBU | L6 LINKTM digital In and Out Additional input for use as an FOH monitor (post-DSP) Powercab Edit connectivity USB audio interface for jamming along with or monitoring backing tracks from your Mac/PC/iOS* device User-selectable mic modeling and distance on the XLR output (Powercab 112’s output uses an SM58 model only) Powercab 112 Plus is about 2 lb (1 kg) heavier *iOS interfacing requires the Apple Camera Connection Kit How loud do they get? 250 watts total. That's 200 watts to the woofer and 50 watts to the compression driver. Wait. 250 watts doesn’t sound like much. Aren’t there other speakers that are thousands of watts? 250 real watts, not marketing watts. The operative spec here is SPL (Sound Pressure Level). Powercab reaches 125dB SPL handily. You should have no problems playing next to the drummer. What’s the reference speaker used? Powercab features a custom designed 8Ω, 12" coaxial speaker that uses a guitar-style cone as opposed to a PA-style cone with a 2” high-temperature voice coil loosely based on the Eminence Beta 12CX format. The 1” compression driver is a Celestion CDX 1-1010, which is used only for Flat mode, monitor feeds, and user IR modes; it’s not utilized at all for speaker models. How do I load IRs into Powercab 112 Plus? From the free Powercab Edit software (Mac/PC) via USB. So I can edit presets via Mac or PC? Yes. Powercab Edit (Mac/PC, available this May from http://line6.com/software/) is used to manage, reorder, backup, import, and export your Powercab 112 Plus presets and IR files (2048-point, 48 kHz .WAV). This allows you to easily create an unlimited collection of presets and IRs stored on your computer, and transfer them as needed to Powercab 112 Plus. Can I get a cover for Powercab? Yes, Powercab covers will be available from select retailers and the Line 6 Store; expected US street price is $69.99. Dimensions/weight? Am I gonna break my back? Powercab 112—22.3”w x 18.2”h x 12”d (33.25 lbs), Powercab 112 Plus—22.3”w x 18.2”h x 12”d (35.5 lbs) What’s the price? Powercab 112—$599.99 US street, Powercab 112 Plus—$799.99 US street When are they shipping? May 2018.
