Are there any really good acoustic IR's that work with single coils? Free or not, I don't care.

Hey again guys, I need a bit of help. Is there any way to take cab packs from the .sysex file format and perhaps put them through a converter to make them into .wav files. A friend of mine loaded a few of his AxeFX IR files into a thumb drive for me to try and they are in SysEx format. Shouldn't I be able to convert these to .wav for the Helix to read them? ...ALSO is there any news of the Helix possibly supporting this type of file for IRs soon?

This afternoon I finally got around to loading up Helix with a bunch of free IRs. (Big thanks to roscoe5 and Chris Beaver for their freebies!) Some things happened that bug me, want to check if I'm Doing It Right. - I collected all the IRs I wanted to load in a few directories on my PC, then used Bulk Rename Utility to rename them with a 2-digit sequential prefix, to make it easy to keep track of what's what when they get to Helix. First thing I did was drag them all into the editor, 80-something files. It made it only a little ways through before I got an error that Helix had disconnected, had to reboot Helix to reconnect. Tried again, same thing. Tried doing batches of 10 at a time, worked much better, but still not consistently successful. Is that "normal"? Is there some other approach to make that work better? Any signs L6 is working on that? - I eventually got all the files I wanted onto the Helix, however, Helix stripped my numeric prefixes off all the first 40 IRs, and none of the rest. I went back and tried dragging those files into the editor again, same thing. I ended up copying and pasting individual names from the file system into the editor, for all of those first 40 IRs. Is that a known bug? A "feature" of some sort? It seems like a bizarre bug for Helix to have, but well, all software has bugs... - Once I got everything loaded, I wanted to back them all up in Helix's native format, with the names how it left them. However, I didn't see a way to back them all up at once. Is it really true you have to export each one individually? Ouch. In any case, it's good to get those resources on board to play with. Had to stop before I could do a whole lot with them, but I did pull up a preset built around an IR roscoe5 made a while ago from an Amplitube dual cab rig I had, tweaked it some, and it really was was pretty cool. As folks have said in that other thread, it's a pretty great time to be an electric musician. So anyway, feedback on those IR questions would be much appreciated.

I screwed up. I was auditioning a bunch of the free Redwire Marshall IRs. I came across a couple that together really have the sound that I was going for in a preset. However, I failed to realize that the long descriptive names in the Redwire IR file names got truncated to a length (25) that typically makes these descriptive names meaningless when they are imported into the Helix. I took a look in the .hlx file but the original file name is not there (didn't expect to be ... but). I assume that there's no way now to determine the files that I loaded? Also I posted this issue on Ideascale as a 25 length name limit is a bit of a usability issue. Any remedies or suggestions on how to determine the files or how to name the IRs in the future are appreciated.

Attention all you two-voice-at-the-same-time-junkies. Here are some alternatives for you. They are derived from Mama Bear. I used Logic Pro's Impulse Response Utility, they are all 32-bit (recorded at 24 and converted) 48K (recorded that way NOT converted) 2048 (a couple are 2047 or 2046, they work the same, it's just really hard to crop exactly 2048 in that clunky program) IRs. All of them work in Helix. I tested them. Here's the thing. Mama Bear makes you not only choose the model, but the input device. I chose the setting that matched my PowerBridge, with EQ flat, captured all the IRs 100% wet (of course), and named them in a manner that should make total sense (ros means rosewood, mah means mahogany, etc. let me know if you can't figure the name of one of them or just download the Mama Bear manual). The number at the front is the number of the model in that manual. A few really cool and different ones are the Gypsy Jazz, Archtop Jazz and resonator models. Very surprising. What surprises me even more is that even though they were made with the "wrong" input selected for a "real" acoustic guitar, they seem to work great in that way! I tried some with my Crowdster and they worked really well. More subtle, I think, than the Fishman Aura ones floating around, and you may like those Fishman ones better (for certain things I think I still do). I will make a sample video when I can, and will probably capture another set with the under-saddle input circuitry selected to see if it works better with acoustic guitars. This week i am posting a couple of IR's of an Acoustic Sim designed for humbucker or single coil pickups. It seemed all of the other available acoustic IR's didn't work well with my electric mag pickups. I set these first few up for some settings that I liked with my Les Paul (HB) and Strat (SC), but there are more settings on the sim if you guys like them. I will probably do more later with the different settings, but would like to test these live and maybe get a little feedback from you guys too first. I had a request on the FB group to do a comparison of IR vs Helix cabs. I'm not here to try and say one is better than the other or suggest what anyone should use, as there are people here on this forum that enjoy both. I just wanted to do a quick A/B. Definitely not trying to knock IR's. For this test I used a Vox Fawn normal channel and compared the stock 2x12 Silver Bell vs a Redwirez 2x12 silver, both with 121 mic 1" off the grill. To my ears they were pretty close. I know that comparing one Helix cab to one IR is VERY far from an exhaustive comparison, which wasn't my intent. My conclusion with THIS test is that the cabs were very similar. Which is to say IR's aren't always superior so whichever one makes you the happiest, go for it. Just trust your ears :)

Since I think i have about exhausted my physical Recto 212, I went back to the Amplitube 4 cabs again this weekend to explore some nice open back 212 sounds. Working with AT4 instead of physical gear also lets me experiment a bit more easily and test some concepts before executing physically. I remembered that a batch of open back Orange 212 cab IR's I previously made sounded boxy, as they did even in AT4. But that Orange AT3 pack was last gen from 2013. The newest and flagship 2015 Amplitube 4 packs are the Mesa and new AT4 British collection, which utilize their newer modelling methods/processes i believe. A cab that I think is close to the Orange open back 212 is a Mesa TA30 212, which is a newer pack for AT4. So with an ear fresh off of some physical IR's I made a couple of weeks ago, I shot a few of AT4 IR's of it with different mics and liked what I was getting. IR life is getting better. I acquired a Line 6 Spider Valve MKII HD100 6L6 tube head this weekend. It was a pawn shop special that needed some love, clean up, and biasing, but it is up and running perfectly now! I have to say this must be one of the most neutral tube amps I have ever heard. It's just a step more coloration than solid state and not nearly as much coloration as my Mesa amps. It has even less coloration than my Randall RM100 head (Egnater designed for different preamp modules), which I thought was really neutral. It must be the Bogner amp design to work well with Line 6 modelers...and it sounds FANTASTIC with Helix. Helix amp-only models>Helix 1/4" out >1/4" SV power amp in>Recto 212 is now my main rig, even over all of my other Mesa amps. I dropped about $40 on on 7 packs of 3 Sigma IR's today. I really liked the online sound clips and comparisons and their site info. But when I got them into Helix, I was still pretty uninspired from the tones, similar vibes to other IR's like the Ownhammer and Redwire demos, as well as Helix cabs. I actually was able to get sounds I liked better with the Helix cabs. I think they would probably be really good if i were to run my physical amps into them. Regardless, I went into the sound cave with new inspiration, determined to make IR's that I liked better with Helix amps. The Audix D1 has stays stronger in the low to low-mid frequency range than the SM57. This results in a little more low end, and boosted midrange. The SM57 has a bit of scoop to it. The Audix D1 does have more highs to it as well. Actually, i think the Audix D1 makes a good guitar cab mic. You can Google the frequency response curves of each and see for yourself. The off-axis (oa) 2 positions of each seem to be closest to amp/cab in room sound. The L6SV_R212_oa2D57 will probably be my new front of house PA XLR path block now, and I will send Helix amp-only to the power amp of my SV amp/Recto 212. These IR's made with the L6 SVMKII HD100 power section are very neutral, especially for a tube amp. These IR's work really well with all Helix amp models with little coloration. I think they really let the nuances and fine controls of the Helix amp models shine through and give more control of sound back to Helix. As I have done with previous v3 IRs, mics were positioned and oriented for the best Helix amp model into power amp/cab tones. Not just typical generic positions. A little early this week since I will be tied up tomorrow. I made a few IR's for those who don't have the Ownhammer ones in sminchk67's Purple Rain video and preset. You should request the preset from him if you haven't already. This script is to help make backing up and restoring IRs to the same slot a little easier. For anyone looking for a quick way to add an incremented prefix number to all their IRs. Still an imperfect solution for IR backups but I hope this helps. I wrote a DOS script inspired by some suggestions on the web for adding an incremented numbered prefix to all of your IRs at once. I considered doing it in PowerShell but I thought more people might be comfortable with a DOS script. It can be run from a Windows directory or any Command window (DOS prompt) As of right now numbered prefixes are the only way I know of to be able to dependably restore IRs after a firmware update and global restore in the same order so that your presets don't point to the wrong IR. I pasted the script here so you can create your own batch file rather than uploading code which always has the possibility of a virus. Cut and paste from this post and just name the file something like IncrementedPrefixIR.bat and run it from the command prompt on a Windows computer. My apologies to Mac users, I am not a Mac person but I am sure it could easily be adapted by someone who is, or run from a Mac DOS emulator. The script is totally non-destructive, only does a copy, and seems to work perfectly but I make no guarantees implied or otherwise. The safest way to test this script will be to copy your IRs and the script to a new directory and run it from there. If anyone has any issues please let me know and I will attempt to fix them. Thanks! Instructions for .bat file use Cut and paste the script into Notepad and save and name the script, e.g IncrementedPrefixIR.bat Make sure you have a .bat extension for the file name. Place it in the directory with your IR files. It will only copy IRs (*.wav) files You can run the script by double-clicking it or using "Open" on the .bat file from the Windows directory, or, alternatively you can open a dos/command prompt and navigate to your IR directory with the script. Then type .\ IncrementedPrefixIR.bat All IRs in the directory will be copied with a prefixed incremented number and underscore. For example, the files "MarshallGreenback.wav" and "MesaBlackWidow.wav" will now have copies named "1_MarshallGreenback.wav" and "2_MesaBlackWidow.wav". You may need to refresh your directory to see the new files. If you run the script twice you will end up with two sets of copies. You can now either move your prefixed copies to a new directory or delete the old files without prefixes (make sure you have a backup of them somewhere else first). You can now order the Windows directory on name and all your IRs can be imported into the Helix in the same order every time. Please feel free to enhance the script, I can think of a couple of ways it could be better. So I went back to the very first Mesa Recto IR and tried to figure out why it sounded SO different than the newer ones I was making. Turns out that I made the beginner "mistake" of not turning off the Mesa Dual Rectifier amp in Amplitube when I was just trying to IR the cab! So I have made a newer version of that first Mesa Cab+Amp IR applying some lessons learned since the first one. I think this clearer and more usable version of it. Try it with just a Cali Rectifier Preamp block too! Sounds killer. Be sure to experiment with the IR samples, low cut, and high cut. Again, a happy mistake leads to new IR possibilities. I don't know where the heck to go with this now. Helix preamps and AT power amp/cab IR's? Waters=muddied! Note that playing the IR by itself does not sound like a full amp at all. Maybe closer to a power amp and cab. It is really is its own beast. I posted a new IR per a member request for a good clean Strat sound. Immediately I think Fender Twin. I setup a Helix preset and loaded the stock US Double Norm (Fender Twin) amp block and separate US Double C12N cab block. I then copied the preset, deleted the cab, and changed the output to USB 5/6, opened AT4 and setup its Fender Twin Model, turned off the AT4 amp, then tweaked the speakers and mics to what I liked. Processed the AT4 cab model per my post http://line6.com/support/topic/19604-irs-from-amplitube-4-cab-room/ Copied the Helix preset again and put in the new AT4 IR block, then I ABC'd the presets. Again, the resulting IR directly in Helix is slightly different than Helix Amp into AT4 cab plug in. I actually think it sounds more open than the AT4 plug in and less nasally than the Helix cab (sorry to use that term again L6, i'll try to find a better one). I'm also noticing that 1024 sample settings on the IR's are a bit more mid-rangy than the 2048 sample setting. Setting them to 2048 samples is almost like throwing a deep switch on an amp. The IR's I have posted on this forum and on Dropbox are made from the Amplitube 4, Fruity Loops, and Voxengo Deconvolver, along with my own tweaks to taste. I asked around this forum and the IK Multimedia forum, Sonar forum, and more and no one had experience or direction. After a lot of research and trial and (lots of) error on my own, I finally got some working pieces in place. The simplest way to do it that I found was with Voxengo Deconvolver and Fruity Loops Fruity Convolver (FLC herein). I'm sure there are other more pro ways to do it. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/amplitube4/ (I highly recommend the Amplitube 4 + Mesa pack for $159) http://www.voxengo.com/product/deconvolver/ http://www.image-line.com/downloads/flstudiodownload.html You can completely create and save IR *.wav files that will import into Helix with the demo versions of FL and Voxengo. But you wont be able to save and reopen the FL session, and you cant do more than 3 conversions at a time with the Voxengo demo. Follow the Fruity Convolver "plug-in sandwich" method for creating an plug-in IR in Making impulse responses from plugin effects , which is based on a reverb plug-in. Except use a 20 sec (20Hz-20kHz) sine sweep signal exported from Voxengo in FLC slot 1 instead of the FLC "clap" impulse (which is good for reverbs). I found that although Helix converts IR's to 16 bit, the 24 bit Voxengo IR sine sweep made a better sounding Cab IR. I couldn't tell a difference between 24 bit and 32 bit. Use Voxengo Deconvolver (VDC) to generate the 20 sec sine sweep impulse *.wav file for an input signal to the DAW plug in (Amplitube) In Fruity Loops, make the Fruity Loops Convolver (FLC)-Amplitube-Fruity Loops Convolver plug in sandwich Turn of the 1st and 3rd slot FLC's and tweak an Amplitube Cab and Mic to taste to a Helix amp Turn on the 1st FLC slot and import and play the Voxengo sine sweep through Amplitube and adjust the Amplitube inputs and outputs below clip (red). Turn on the 3rd FLC slot (all 3 are on now) and record the output (response) of the 1st FLC through Amplitube 2nd slot. In the 3rd FLC slot, add a little silence to the end of the recorded response as for some reason it is slightly shorter than 20 sec. In the 3rd FLC slot, export the response as a *.wav In VDC, load the original VDC-generated 20 sec sine sweep *.wav file and the FLC exported response *.wav file, In VDC, set the magic settings in the pic above (experiment to taste), and click Process In Helix App, drag your new IR it into one of the Impulses slot, put it on a preset, and enjoy. To maybe alleviate any concerns about pirating Amplitube, all new IRs I post will be exported from Helix impulse library after they have been processed by Helix import. This adds another layer of processing that makes them a little further from the Amplitube originals, but the same to Helix users. Recall that Helix converts IRs to 16 bit on import. I also think there may be some other processing by Helix as the 9kb 16bit Helix-exported IRs sound different in a DAW than the pre-import 24 bit 50-150kb IRs I get with the process I use. Update 4/7/2016 I have added equivalent Power Amp + Cab IR's on Dropbox. These have a lot thicker sound and I believe have captured more of the tube power amp + cab interaction and vibe. These can be use with Helix preamp blocks as well as amp blocks. Using them with preamp blocks will allow you to split the signal after the preamp for virtual effects loop or to send preamp signal to your real tube power amp or amp effects return, the run the Amp +Cab IR to the Helix XLR for front of house sound. Mesa Recto Pwr Amp +Cab Marshall 70 80 Pwr Amp + Cab Fender Twin 212 Pwr Amp + Cab Fender Deluxe 410 Pwr Amp + Cab Mesa Mark III V30 412 Pwr Amp + Cab New! These IR's should give you completely different sounds than available from within Helix or from any cab IR company (Ownhamer or Redwirez). Update 4/8/2016 I have archived all previous trial IR's and files and did some housekeeping. The old stuff should still be there in the !Archive folder if there is something you think you need. All files are now at the IR folder level with a naming convention to organize them. There is generally one cab IR and one (power) Amp + Cab for each amp/cab type. I have refreshed previous cab IR's and new amp + cab IR's with updated naming so that the name in Helix is the same as the file name. It was a file title issue. New tested workflows below!!! These IR's work great with outboard physical gear and Helix as the IR processor, signal router, and controller, including preamps, amps effects sends, and amps though reactive loads. Feel free to experiment as always, but the the physical components do seem to work intuitively as you would traditionally route them in the real world. preamps sound good through Amp + Cab IR's and the amp effects sends, slaves, & reactive load outs sound good through the Cab IR's Things I have tested that work well: Helix preamps & amps (of course!) Mesa Triaxis preamp Marshall JMP-1 preamp Mesa V Twin pedal preamp Mesa Stiletto Duece II (effects send & reactive load) Mesa Mark V (effects send, slave out, & reactive load)

I have a general question for users more expert on using IRs. Where do you generally set the "Mix" and "Level" parameters? In particular I am interested in where you set the Level. I would have thought that generally the Level should be set at "unity" at 0db, but I have found that particularly on the acoustic IRs, this can result in a fizzy kind of unpleasant sound. Setting the Level lower usually sounds better to my ears. So where do you set the Mix and Level parameters for both electric and acoustic IRs? Please specify whether you are using electric or acoustic. Thanks!

As long as firmware updates involve doing global resets (9&10 footswitch reboot) which also clears out the IRs I have found I am presented with a bit of a problem. I export all my IRs at one time in a mass export before a firmware update to a fresh directory with nothing else in it, but when I use the Helix App and return to that directory to import them, they are stored in alphabetical order in the save directory in Windows. This means that when you go to do a mass import to reload them into the Helix after a global reset they appear by default in the import window in alphabetical order. This probably is not the order the IRs were loaded on your Helix. If you import them this way (alphabetical order) they will probably no longer correspond to the IRs you set up in your presets. This means your custom presets come up with the wrong IR loaded. The way to deal with this is when you open the IR import browse window in the Helix App, sort the IRs on date. Then select them all. This will allow you to import them all at one time in the same order you exported them (even though Windows may not display the time in milliseconds in the browse window, each successive IR saved in a mass export actually has a slightly later timestamp and Windows can sort on it). Perhaps other folks have a better solution but this one is working well for me. It would be great to have an "Export Setlist" in the IR section of the Helix App so this workaround wasn't necessary. However this method seems to work pretty well when you are dealing with a lot of IRs and don't want to have to re-import them one by one, and you also want them to go back into the same IR "slot"/position on the Helix that you exported from. Note: If the Helix app import browse window is not showing "Date" as one of the columns (this is the column you need to sort on), you can do the following. Right click on the directory with your IRs, choose "Properties", select the "Customize" tab, and then select "Documents" in the "Optimize this folder for" pulldown menu. This is the process for Windows 10, it should be similar in earlier Windows versions or even on the Mac.

Looking for links to freeware, promotional, basically any IR that is legal to share and download including Helix user created IRs that you are willing to share. THANKS!!! Here is one to get things started: http://www.openairlib.net This is kind of an interesting site with a huge repository and has some extraordinarily different IRs available for download. There are definitely many in the mono 48khz format preferred by the Helix. The stereo ones can be used as well but you will only get the left channel per the documentation in the Helix. I suppose if you know how you could possibly also transform the IRs that are not in the proper format for the Helix. If you find an IR you like just click on the link and then select the "Impulse Response" tab. I have successfully downloaded the IRs from there. Note: Some browsers will automatically try to play .wav files; you will need to make sure you use a browser that doesn't, or change the settings so that it gives you the option to download or play. I have to admit I have yet to use them but it looks like there is some amazing potential here. These are not mic/cab IRs, they are IRs from all kinds of spaces and structures, natural and man-made, taken from locations around the globe, I imagine they could be used in lieu of a reverb or echo for instance, or perhaps even instead of a cab. Thinking some of these might also work well for acoustic guitar as well as electric. Hello every one. Does anyone know how to find some IRs for acoustic guitar ? I didn't find anything by googling. I need some IRs in order to use in my Helix for recording acoustic guitar through cable or mic ( which I don't know which one may works better with IRs) The purpose is creating a killer sound with a not perfect acoustic guitar! ...and please advice how to use it? I mean ordering. TNX :)
