  1. Hi Helixists Being already aware of this post which contradicts the manual on the 1/4" outs What is the official info on Helix's Outputs? XLRs: This ones clearly Balanced! Mic or Line Level switchable, but when in Line level -10dBV or + 4dBU? 1/4": Manual says unbalanced... but are they really? Again confusion comes from the aforementioned post. Instrument or line Switchable , but when in Line level -10dBV or + 4dBU? Sends: Same as 1/4" Would be sooo nice for the manual to be clear on this. :- ) Guix the Helixist standing by.
  2. Hi there - long time Line 6 user, new poster... I recently purchased a Helix LT and PowerCab Plus 112. What I'm trying to do is set up all my patches so they could be used with any of the following: * XLRs would have cab sims/IRs. * Headphone out is monitoring the XLRs (already found and set this in global settings) * Digital - goes to Powercab through L6 link. No cab sims * 1/4" outs - might run into a poweramp and guitar cab, so no IRs/Cab sims I have the split path thing down, but can only choose 2 paths, each with a target output. So I can set up path 2A with no cab sims going to Digital and path 2B going to Multi, or just XLR, but then I don't have a way to specify which one 1/4" uses... And when I specify 2A is digital and 2B is XLR, I'm still getting the non-cab sim'd setting into headphones, even though I specified that phones monitors XLR in the global settings. Am I missing anything? I searched on YouTube and through this forum a bit and can't find anything definitive. Am I just exceeding the capabilities here?
  3. I have helix lt so it has only one volume knob. My issue was that all amps sounded very weak and i was unsatisfied with any of them. Suddenly i figured out that if i change headphones monitor setting from multi to 1/4 the sound became not only much louder but also fuller. Is this intended behavior? It was not very intuitive to figure out since i always had my volume knob turned up half way and i though that something is wrong either with my gear or the unit. But after changing this setting volume doubled. Thanks
  4. Apologies. Haven't been to the forum in a long time and haven't used my HD500X in quite a while and having to slog thru those dense guides...... Firstly, in short. Recently come to understand the importance of using a DI box/buffer between guitar and ones audio interface. Plan on getting the new IK multimedia Z-Tone thing.... however.... I was wondering if plugging my guitar into the HD, trying the various impedance settings and outputting to my interface, might that accomplish something similar. Don't want to use any of the amp models, cabs or anything... just the straight thru put guitar signal. So my question is, does whatever impedance choices I make also affect the thru signal? Second. I remember setting the input sources to get optimum sound was (and probably still is) a real big bone of contention as the default didn't sound as good. Being too brittle/ harsh/noisy or something as I recall. What would be optimum? Thanks
  5. Hi there, Any help most appreciated in advance. :-) I have seen a few videos talking about exporting a DI signal with no effects but I am still missing something. I am just wondering if there are any global settings I need to change. Currently I am trying to record a dry signal in Cubase (PC) and have an 1) XLR going out to a monitor speaker in my room using XLR output to hear a full sound to record with, and 2) I have set up a parallel chain with a volume pedal and the output is the 1/4 inch jack output. In theory this should send a clean signal. When I play and monitor in cubase I hear clean guitar, but after I have recorded a test, when I listen back to what was recorded it's the full effected sound. Seems like the effected full amp sound etc is coming out of all the outs, send 1&2. 1/4 inch etc not just the XLR Thanks in advance. Carl.
  6. Good day dear Line6 and everyone!! Q.1 I have POD X3 and POD HD Bean. I connect them to two KRK monitors through this mixer: www.rjmmusic.com/mini-line-mixer Please tell me which 6.3jack cables I need to use to operate one POD in stereo and where to connect them? 2 TRS or 2 TS? If I connect one or two cables, which inputs are should I use the mixer in these two separate cases? Please read the instructions for the mixer. I look forward to hearing from you, with respect. I'm playing through GearBox. Q.2 What cables should I use from this list to connect two monitors to the mixer? I also want to inform you that the engineer from RJM who produced this mixer advised me to use 2 mono-jack cables to mono-xlr (ground connected to sleeve in xlr-connector). But I want to ask you, it will be the right option if I do not have grounding in the outlet and whether there will be noise from ground fault with sleeve on every cable? If there is another connection option from the list, then please inform me of the best option. All in two photos. Q.3 How to adjust the impedance on this sound path? (Guitar Processor> Mixer> Monitors) What value should not exceed and not be underestimated at the inputs and outputs. Give an example please (Guitar processor> Mixer> Monitors). 7. Unfortunately, the design engineers decided to dual purpose an output without understanding the consequences. The PHONES/DIRECT OUT provides a stereo signal to the tip and the ring of a 1/4 Jack when inserted into the connector on the back panel. This is fine for listening with headphones but absolutely WORTHLESS when connecting to any mixing console input. Almost all mixer inputs accept BALANCED audio signals and when you send a STEREO signal to such an input you will only hear the audio that is not common to either channel. Mostly it will be a really crappy, low level signal that is impossible to use to anything. The easy fix is to lift one of the conductors on the cable (tip or ring) and leave it unconnected to anything. A more complex fix is to combine the leaft and right channels to make a mono signal and put it on the tip of a cable sent to the mixer and leave the ring unconnected. WHY? Because BALANCED audio format is one of the coolest tricks around. A balanced output has the guitar (audio) signal AND the inverse of the guitar (audio) signal both on the one cable. Signal on the tip (or pin 2 in XLR) and inverse of the signal on the ring (pin 3 of the XLR) . When these signals are sent to a BALANCED INPUT, the signals are SUBTRACTED from each other to produce a signal with twice the gain. This is all done to eliminate the noise which will be a positive signal on both conductors. Say the signal is 2 volts and the noise is .5 volts. You get 2 - (-2) = 4 for the signal and .5 -.5 = 0 for the noise. brilliant stuff because it is so simple. So when you plug your DIRECT OUT into a balanced input (almost all mixers have balanced inputs) you get LEFT SIGNAL - RIGHT SIGNAL = almost all the good stuff gone! I was shocked that a great company like LINE6 would pass this off and even tell you tpo use the DIRECT OUT to record. Really a remedial design issue that should have been caught before they made the amps. peace
  8. Hello! I'm interested in Helix LT and i was wondering if i can edit each of my presets to have cab simulation on the left output (to connect straight to PA) and on the right output without cab sims (for amp connection through fx-return) Thanks in advance!
  9. The Helix is designed for the user to set up a number of signal flow combinations. It allows for unique situations that would normally be extremely difficult to set up in real life. They can now be easily arranged within the unit. For further reading, make you also check out the Helix manual section on Serial vs. Parallel Routing and Moving Split & Merge Blocks. View the Helix manual here Having said that, you can also get some un desirable results if you're not careful with how you set up your routing. These can include phasing issues, volume drop, or noise floor increase. *Notes about Inputs and outputs · 1/4" Returns are unbalanced. · All Helix outputs (main outs and Sends) are impedance balanced, so you can plug a TRS cable and go to another device balanced input and profit from some common-mode noise cancellation. . When the Helix outputs are set to line level, they are +4dBU nominal with approximately 15dB of headroom. When set to instrument level, they -10bBu. Or more simply, they are 20Vpp max input/output. Noise floor increase due to the introduction of Sends and Returns When using the Helix sends and returns the noise floor can be increased. This is due to the number of A/D converters now used in the signal chain. Most of the increase is negligible. However, it can become more noticeable if the sends/returns are placed in front of a high gain amp model such as the PV Panama (Peavy 5150) due to its inherent high noise floor. This phenomenon occurs on the Pod HD series as well. . Potential latency issues due to the introduction of Sends and Returns This is another one that you won't notice in most situations, but could arise given certain circumstances. The tiny amount of latency introduced from another set of A/D converters is impossible to hear on it's own. An issue could occur if you merge that pathway back with another serial pathway that wasn't going through that send/return. The millisecond delay may cause some undesirable phasing. Below I have pictured a signal path that might yield poor results. If you move the merge block before the Send/Return, then it would eliminate any potential phasing issues. Using Helix Hardware as an interface to record When using the Helix as an interface with a DAW, the signal routing can get a little confusing and it might become difficult to balance levels for monitoring. The typical set up would be guitar into Helix, then Helix to computer via USB. You would then monitor from the headphones, 1/4" or XLR outputs. Given that setup, the guitar and the DAW's playback are sharing the same monitoring. If you have the guitar going into the DAW and then back out, you will hear your guitar twice. You can mute the DAW's return of the guitar track to avoid this. Also, in this case the volume knob will control the total output making it tougher to balance the sound of the guitar and the DAW's playback. Try setting the volume knob to only control the feed you're monitoring, and it will no longer control the USB feed to your computer. You can also try making the playback volume adjustment from the DAW. Using Helix Hardware as an interface to record with Helix Native The above signal flow still applies, but a new level of complexity is added. Since the hardware is no longer processing the guitar, you can't mute your guitar tracks return feed, because you'll want to hear it. What works best is the set up the Helix with a blank preset, and then change the output block to your desired USB output. That way, the only thing you're hearing from the Helix is your DAW's return. Auto Impedance Switching With the Helix family, the default setting for the guitar input is auto impedance. The impedance will be determined by the first block in the signal chain. Even if the first block is bypassed, the impedance setting from that effect block will determine the input signal level. This automatic impedance will change the input volume and tone, this is most apparent with guitars that have passive pickups and are directly connected to the guitar in of Helix. Distortion Pedal Volume Drop Sometimes when adding a distortion/fuzz pedal, your signal volume drops. Here's a link to a great article written by our sound designer Ben Adrian that can explain in detail what's occurring. Although the article is written to describe what happens in the analogue world, it's affect can be experienced within the Helix and it's digital models. Distortion Pedal Volume Drop (and how hard diode clipping works)
  10. Hey all, Is there any way to set up the HD500x to have 2 effects loops? For example, could I use the Headphone out and aux input as a send and return for another effects loop? I think that the way that this would probably work practically is to have one "signal path" which goes guitar input -> internal stuff -> Headphone out. Then have a second signal path which goes "aux input -> stuff -> live outs?" I have a good bit of outboard gear that I currently use with an older POD, and really need to be able to put them in 2 separate loops (one for preamps and gain stages, one for post-amp time based stuff) which I currently can't do. Is it doable with the HD500x? or do I need to go to Helix for that?
  11. Hi everyone! So I'm trying to figure out the best way to setup my HD500x. For live shows, I use an electric through a fender hot rod deville, an acoustic, and a mandolin. I'd like all of my effects to go through the HD500x for all instruments. But, obviously, I don't want the acoustic or mandolin running through my amp. Ideally, I'd like to set it up to where each instrument would be able to have a separate channel for mixing. But since this is impossible (to my knowledge at least), what is the best way to set this up? For only the electric to go through the amp and the mandolin and acoustic basically be run direct. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!
  12. Hi Guys, Our band plays at a lot of venues with interesting sound control requirements. We run an M20d as our mixer into my Nexo sound system - we run that as per normal, but the venue is trying to cover a large area with many rooms, so they order us to plug a stereo feed into their in-house ceiling system, so that our main mix I pull from stage gets piped throughout various rooms in the venue.. So I run straight out of the M20d stereo main outs into my PA and mix that for audience directly where we're playing, but how do I patch that same mix into to the house system. They usually have two XLR inputs (left and right stereo ins) on the wall side of stage we need to plug into.. On my old desk I had a summed stereo out with separate gain knob I could use. How should I do it on the M20d - it doesn't have such a thing.. Thanks, Stu
  13. Does anyone know of a successful way to route the USB Channels to Helix's sends for backtrack use? From ableton I'm trying to send click out 1, bass out 2, guitars/production out 3/4, and BG vocals out 5/6. I can't seem to get any of the routing to happen without manually creating a path on the second open chain in each patch. This only results in two active outputs. Is it not possible to make this happen?
  14. hi folks, first time posting! im hoping to get a POD XT Live soon. i just lay down what im hoping to do with it, and you tell me if its possible ok? hopefully some of you will chime in with some educated info. ok here we go... my interest here lies in playing live gigs, so keep that in mind. ok.... - i want to use the direct output to the sound guy - while SIMULTANEOUSLY using an output to my poweramp/cab - that way the sound guy has his pristine guitar signal for front of house/PAs and i get my own signal going to my amp and cab so i can control my stage volume without effecting anything else. can i do this? thanks a lot.
  15. Hi, when connecting the balanced outputs of the UX8 to the unbalanced inputs of the Roland MC-909 should I use a balanced or unbalanced cable? What effect would using balanced vs. unbalanced have on the signal?
  16. There's lots input and output options with the Firehawk line. Here's a breakdown. First let's look at what's the same on both units. USB port for updating firmware and use as an I/O interface. Variax input for any Line 6 Variax guitars 1/4" Stereo headphones (This will cut the speaker off on the 1500) 1/4" Stereo out XLR Stereo out 1/4" Stereo FX Send and Return Bluetooth Wireless for use with the Firehawk Remote app and any other Bluetooth streaming device Firehawk FX unique: 9VDC input for use with the DC3g power supply 1/4" jack for use with a outboard expression pedal (compatible with Line 6 EX1 and Mission Engineering EP1-L6) Firehawk 1500 unique: IEC power cable jack FBV cable jack for use with FBV 3 or FBV MKII MIDI in and out/thru Check out the Midi implementation chart in the manual for details XLR+1/4" Stereo Combo jacks with Gain Adjustment Knob. 17. Hi. This is my first post and any help is greatly appreciated. My SPVX is connected to iPad via lightning cable. I'm using Auria and I'm happy with it. My L and R outputs are connected (via balanced jacks) to active monitors and I also have headphones plugged into the SPVX. Direct Monitoring is on. My problem is that the sound is output to the speakers and the headphones (might sound obvious but I had assumed the direct monitoring would come through the headphones only and would not come through the speakers unless in playback). Obviously this is giving me feedback and/or unwanted audio in the recordings. The easiest way round the problem is to unplug or turn off the monitors when recording and switch them back on for mixing. However, I don't want to be fussing back and fore with that if I can help it. Any suggestions to mute the speakers during recording? Thanks in advance.
  18. Outputs When the Helix XLR outputs are subjected to phantom power, the output level is decreased. Do not try and connect your Helix to a mixer, interface, or PA system that supplies phantom power (48v) to the Helix XLR outputs. The workaround is to use the 1/4" outputs instead. If your setup requires XLR usage and phantom power cannot be avoided, we've seen some customers have success with a phantom power suppressor. Input When using the XLR input with a microphone, do not "hot swap" the cable. Do not have the 48v phantom power engaged when plugging in an XLR cable. It's best practice to plug in the cable with a mic attached to the other end, then go into Global Settings>Ins/Outs and turn on the Mic Phantom Power. Make sure to disengage the 48v before unplugging the cable as well.
  19. Greetings Line6-Community, I want to use my POD HD500 as a USB interface for my PC, instead of using my bulit in soundcard. The only problem for me is, that I need separate outputs for the PC-Sounds and the Inputs (in my case: Guitar via "Guitar IN" and microphone via "AUX IN"). Is it possible to get the PC Signal through the "phones output" and separatley the inputs through the "1/4 L/R Outputs"? Thanks advance for your help! ^_^
  20. Hey guys Trying to set up some live patches on my HD500x but running into an issue. I'm using the left 1/4" out right now to go into my laptop interface but I'm only hearing sound on one side. I have the patch's mixer set to center. When running this live, I'll most likely be giving one 1/4" out to my singer (he runs his own IEM setup) and then usually an XLR out to the front of house mixer. Is this going to mess up what the audience hears? Will they hear only one FOH speaker with guitar or will it sum to both?
  21. Hello everyone, I am considering to purchase Pod X500, but I have a big dilemma... I currently own PodXt and there's one thing about it which is really bothering me - I'm unable to route guitar to different output on it while XT is connected via USB. Elaborating a bit - I want an option to be able to send fully processed signal from guitar to, let's say, both unbalanced 1/4 outs connecting to amp, and non-processed signal from DAW to the both XLR's, leading to console/PA. I want just guitar/ in my amp, and clean DAW in PA, without guitar mixing in. Simultaneously. Also it would be lovely to know if I can route XLR input to different outputs, say, fully processed signal (achieved by dual amping in Pod) goes to the same output as DAW. Is it all possible? X500 really seems like hell of a machine - XLR input, looper, MIDI, Audio Interface, loads of I/O... But it will be nothing for me without this basic flexibility, which Pod XT doesn't have. I made a search on forum and knowledge base and there was no answer. Please, owners of X500, help fellow musician out! :) Cheers.
  22. Hello all, I can't find it today, but I saw somewhere on here instructions for sending two outputs from the HD500X - one direct to the mixing console and another to my amp. IIRC: XLR Left Output to the mixing console and the 1/4" Left output to my amp. Does that sound correct? What output setting do you recommend I use? Thanks for helping out a noob.
