  1. I'm having a very specific problem with the G-string piezoelectric pickup on my Variax 500. Much of the time, the signal goes dead; there is no sound coming from it. However, after pressing down on it, for a few seconds to a few minutes the sound will return, but it will then get fuzzy and fade out to nothing again. This started a week or two ago. Is this a grounding issue, a signal wire issue, or something entirely different? And how can it be fixed? Thanks!
  2. Hi, I have just upgraded from a Variax 300 (1st gen) to the JTV 69. I have just discovered there are a lot less pickup models on the JTV. One of my favourites was the Lester Custom which had a driven output. I cannot see model packs for the JTV, are they available and I'm just blind or is the pickup modelling a lot more limited? Thanks
  3. Would it be possible to add a new modern pickup model or two, to the Variax software/firmware, to bring it in line with Shuriken's modern good looks? I'm sure JTV owners probably wouldn't mind this either. I know a lot of folks like EMGs, Bare Knuckle, Fishman, DiMarzio, etc. I'm sure people have lots of opinions on which they'd wish for most. Would love to know how people feel about this one.
  4. I love my JTV-89F. It's one of the best guitars I ever had. But, IMO, EMG active pickups are the best. I use EMG 81 and 85 and they sound great. So I decided to install those in my Variax JTV-89F. After searching the Internet I could not find any source of reliable information regarding this topic. So I decided to share my experience. I made a video documenting the process. You can find it on Youtube. !!! WARNING !!! If you do this, you'll void your guitar warranty. After installation all the Variax models are working perfectly. Also tuning and custom tuning. Issue #1: The EMG pickups do not allow to split coils and the Variax uses a 5 way switch. While in magnetic pickups mode, position 2 produces the same sound as position 1. And position 4 the same sound as position 5. 1 = Bridge 2 = Bridge 3 = Bridge + Neck 4 = Neck 5 = Neck When you activate the modeling mode, all the positions continue to be independent, as in stock mag pickups. Issue #2: When the active pickups are powered, the volume control acts almost as an on-off switch. At 1/5 of a knob turn you start to hear sound already at almost 80% gain. Bellow 1/5 of a turn, no sound at all. Issue #3: Tone knob seems to produce no noticeable effect. That's it. To me, now I have a perfect guitar. I don't use much the tone knob, and I can control volume with my volume pedal.
  5. I've tried a lot of pickups over the years. Seymour Duncans, Dimarzios, Joe Bardins, EMGs, and of course various Fender and Gibson pickups too. For a long time I settled on the DiMarzio Super Distortion. btw - Even though I play in a Black Sabbath Tribute band I just go for a high gain tone, not trying to tone match. I use Jackson Guitars and Marshall Amps with the PODHD acting as a PreAmp into the FX returns. A friend brought his Epiphone Tony Iommi Signature SG to one of my gigs and asked if I would try it out. I did a quick level check and made sure it wouldn't squeal then we kicked in. Wow - was the only thing I could think of. The pickups were friggin' amazing. Turned out they were the new Gibson Tony Iommi Signature Pickups. I did a little research and from what I could find, Gibson was working on a new set of high gain pickups then as an after thought they named them the TI Signature pickups. Anyway, what I'm trying to say is all the little things I didn't like in my tone were gone. I now had what I'd been searching for. Thick, rich, sustainy tone and no unwanted feedback or micro-phonics. And no hint of fizz either... I'm not trying to tell anyone to use this particular pickup. What I'm trying to say is maybe you need different pickups than what you have if you can't find the tone you're looking for. Also the capacitor values on the tone knob can make a big difference too. But that's another topic and this one is already too long. What pickups do you use ? What type of tone do you typically use ? Hi-gain, Blues, Clean, Country, Jazz ? Not the best recording but gives you an idea of the tone. https://youtu.be/r0ZRJ9tKzfQ
  6. Hi all! Im having problems with Pickup height adjustment. The former owner adjusted The neck and the pickup's because he used it for Slide playing. So it would be very nice if anyone could help me with the settings. I would asume that this will also effect the Acoustic guitar sound, because The sound of the Acoustic's is not nearly as good as demo's and 700's i have testet.
  7. The pickup height on the bridge pickup is so high, and the hex wrench is too long. So how are we to set intonation on the guitar without removing the humbucker??? Also, this is yet another bad example of Sweetwater's so-called "55 point inspection" process.
  8. *NOTE: Any customization/modification performed will void the warranty if it results in damage to the guitar. JTV-59 JTV-69 JTV-89
  9. Q: How can I reduce hum/noise/feedback when playing? -Single coils pickups used with higher gain settings will often cause noise. Try combining two pickups via the pick-up selector or trying a different guitar to see if the situation is the same. Make sure all the input and output jacks are tight. Check the instrument with different pickup settings to make sure it is not a bad pickup connection. -Higher gain settings tend to be the cause of many noise and feedback issues, try to dial the gain back on your amp a bit. Remember that heavy-rock bands often triple track (or more) when recording to create a thicker sound. -Turn your volume knob off when you are not playing (even during stops in a song when possible). -Turn off other volume controls not being used (i.e. volume trim pots) -Use the highest quality cables you can afford, and the shortest distance you can live with. RF can create many noises that can be eliminated with well shielded cables. -Experiment with distance and position between your guitar and amplifier/recording rig. - Avoid florescent lighting when possible. - Make sure that your instrument/rig is plugged into the same power source as the rest of your gear/band/PA system (to avoid ground loops). - User a power conditioner/regulator to filter RF and keep the voltage constant. - Experiment with the noise gate feature on your Line 6 unit or use an external noise gate. Q: I hear a "popping" sound when I turn my amp on, is this normal? How do I reduce the popping sound I hear when I turn my amp on? A: The popping sound is normal as it is a ramp of up the switch mode power supply. You can lessen the effect by: i) not having the input plugged in (disengaging the preamp section). ii) having the master volume turned all the way down (lowering the power amp output).
