  1. Hello everyone, First time poster. I have an Orange dark terror amp head that I use with a rockcrusher recording load box/attenuator/cabinet emulator to connect to the Helix. I've just moved from a flat with three floors of neighbours above me to a house with a spacious attic room that has become my home studio. I was operating a silent recording setup in the flat but I now want to start using some form of speaker. I'm leaning towards a FRFR speaker (specifically this http://www.andertons.co.uk/speaker-cabinets/pid35447/cid690/laney-iron-heart-irtx-powered-guitar-expansion-cab.asp ) because I figure I might be able to use it with my roland TD30k drumkit as well (although that isn't a priority.) I have enough to buy one speaker but if needed I may invest in two at some point in the future. I mainly want to know whether it's possible to generate feedback from the helix amp and cab models and/or routing the orange head and rockcrusher through the Helix and using a FRFR speaker. I ask because I saw this video of a Helix and cabinet demo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IuX5L8DjtM. The guy definitely seems to be getting some feedback together and having been recording silently for the last 3 years I want to start squealing and howling again. I have two questions as I've never used a FRFR speaker before. I connect the rockcrusher to the helix and use the orange head as an insert block separate from any Helix amp and cab models and FX, sometimes in a mono serial routing and sometimes in a stereo parallel routing as two different amp and cab emulations panned left and right, and sent from the XLR outs direct to my mixer. As such having the ability to connect a stereo signal to the FRFR speaker is important to me but not necessarily outputting a stereo image to my ears (if that makes sense) ie a left and right FRFR speaker. So could I send a stereo signal from the Helix 1/4 inch outs to the stereo FX loop on the FRFR? I don't forsee using the FRFR in any part of the recording as yet (mainly due to not quite understanding how or why I would in preferance to the way I record at the moment eg using the two Helix XLR outs to connect to two channels on my mixer) and just using the speaker for monitoring the helix. Does that mean I have to complete the FX loop ie send a stereo signal back to the helix from the FRFR? I mean as I understand it feedback is the phenomenon of soundwaves from the speaker vibrating the guitar strings and being picked up by the guitar pickups, generating noise through the amp and manifesting as soundwaves from the speaker and then repeating that sequence over and over. 2nd question: is it physically possible to generate feedback using a FRFR speaker and will it damage any of the components in my theoritical rig of guitar > Helix > Orange amp > Rockcrusher > Helix > FRFR speaker and then using the Helix XLR outs to send to my mixer. Apologies if any of these questions seem simple or strange.
  2. I apologize if this was asked previously elsewhere. I tried perusing the manuals and searching the forums... For the last 4 years, I have been using Guitar Rig with Rig Kontrol live. Honestly, I might still be a happy user if NI would keep their products up-to-date and not discontinue their hardware. :angry: I can't do a live show anymore without experiencing bad audio drop-outs and worse. Time to ditch and look elsewhere... One of the cool things I was able to do with GR, however, was route speaker simulation (cab sim, etc.) to ONLY one side of the outputs. My common setup was to run the output with NO cab sim to my on-stage amp, and the output with the cab sim ON to the DI/PA system. The tones were just a little off from each other, but my stage amp has V30's, and so I'd run the V30 cab sim for the house line, and with a little EQ, I was a pretty happy camper. This became the better option, rather than A) Mic'ing the stage cab for the house feed (not a fan), and B] Running the cab sim ON to my amp signal (Redundant yuck.), or C) Using NO cab sim (horrible shrill line out). So obviously, that's my question. Can you, somehow, route the outputs on the HD500X in such a way where the speaker simulation is running to, say, the Balanced XLR output(s) - meanwhile the 1/4" amp outputs disengage any cab sim? Or...is there another option/configuration I'm not aware of that addresses this issue? Thanks for the help!
  3. I have output of the path 1 (1A + 1B) going to the inputs of the path 2. And path 2 is further is split into 2A and 2B. If I send the output of path 1 to either path 2A or 2B, volume level reduces by approx. half. If I send the output of path 1 to 2A+2B, volume level seems fine. I am probably missing some information here. Any idea what is wrong? OR, is this how it's supposed to work?

  5. So thinking or getting a Helix as well as a Fractal fx 8 . I am hoping to run the Helix as a master controller to the fx8. Would i be right in thinking this would be possible by running the fx8 though one of the 4 external loops in the Helix and then using midi to control scene selection in fx8? Will this mean i am going to have problems with a 4 cable method or by selecting the fx8 in a block in the Helix , can i change this around as neccessary to fit around Helix's amps and cabs models? I am hoping to be able to fit this in with some form of wet dry wet rig. I.e. Bogner Shiva combo and L2 or Laney irt-x expansion cabs... i really like the idea of how fexible this rig could be and also the amount of quality amps and effects on tap but just need to know whether this is just a mad rush blood to the head or could it work? Thanks in advance :)
  6. So while I had my 500 apart to fix some solder points, I modded it to have regular pickups as well. I routed out space for an HSS configuration, customized a strat pickguard and installed a balance/blend pot to go between the two. Took me a while but it works great.

  8. Okay, so I've been using the pod for guitar effects for some time now. I use it for all modulation, delay, verb and then go straight into my head. I don't use models live. Because of this, I have plenty of DSP left (especially on the 500x) and I want to put it to use by adding effects to my vocals. The inputs are very straight forward, and I understand the internal signal routing aspect totally, so I know how to keep these two signals separate. Problem is, I need an unbalanced output to go to the amp and a balanced out to go to FOH for the vocals. The unbalanced outputs automatically sum to mono so I can't use one of each without sending vocals to my amp! I could use both unbalanced outs and use a DI for the vocals (seems like a TOTAL waste of a good DI and I'd rather use it elsewhere) OR I use both balanced and "unbalance" the signal going to the amp. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron so I can make the cable, but I need to know whether to short the cold pin to ground or leave it open. I definitely don't want to fry anything. Can someone help me figure this out?
  9. Hello, fellow M20d users :) I was just thinking on how I can achieve a short "effect shot" on the M20d without having a sound guy turning the effect on and off or switching Scenes during a song. I´m trying to do the following: For one song I need a long reverb on my percussion kit, just for 3-4 strokes on the intro, then I want to return to "normal operations" or better said my normal global settings for the groove of the song. I don´t have anybody who could turn the reverb on during the gig with the IPad, nor do I want to Switch Scens during the running song. My thought was that I maybe can "route" the reverb to an empty Encoder/channel and then just unmute this channel for the intro and mute it afterwards. Is there a way I can achive this with the M20d somehow? Yeah, I know I can turn on and off the effect on the channel myself, but I don´t want to switch away from the perform screen. So, I need to find a way to push just a button or encoder on the perform screen to turn on or off the reverb for the percussion kit.
  10. hi guys, • first of all I must say that my intent here is NOT to tread on anyone's toes I just don't like when an idea, not founded on reality, begins to spread and everyone thinks it's the truth, while the facts say something else • the background: many users in this and other forums reported the same "feeling" that something is wrong when using the default Input Settings which means selecting the same signal for input 1 and 2 (I'll refer to this as "guitar/same" o "both inputs active"): according to them, this setting introduces some artifact which I'll call for simplicity "the input settings phase issue" as a consequence they say that by choosing guitar/variax (therefore "disabling" input 2) you get a better tone (of course if you use a variax you must "translate" what you read, the point is: if you are using only one instrument, should you choose its input for Input-1 and "same" for Input-2 or not?) • I never read more than personal opinions on this matter and no "scientific" tests and of course simply switching between one or two inputs in the same patch is not even to take into consideration due to gain differences so I decided to run those tests by myself • even before testing I must say that, if the phase issue between input-1 and 2 was true, then it should be ascribed to a serious bug in the POD HD signal routing "both inputs active" is even the default setting so it should work as expected • if you're interested in the POD HD signal routing and to take full advantage of the possibilities of this machine, please take a look at these routing schematics I built months ago based on many tests: http://line6.com/support/topic/2033-pod-hd-500-500x-routing-schematics/ • and finally the real point of this post: I tested the difference by ear with a guitar and a looper before the pod and did not hear any difference, then I tested it in a professional way and confirmed that THE ONLY DIFFERENCE between guitar/same and guitar/variax Input Settings is the level that the first effect/amp in the pre-path will receive. So choosing guitar/variax is not "better" than guitar/same, it's just a good way to lower the input level and so reduce the distortion/saturation of your first effect/amp in the pre-path. The POD HD500 routing, as explained in my schematics, simply says that the "normal" level to send to the first effect is with both inputs active (guitar/same), this is proved by the fact that putting the same distortion/amp in the pre-path or in one of the dual paths gives the same distortion ONLY if the inputs are on guitar/same (see the last part of my post here: http://line6.com/support/topic/2033-pod-hd-500-500x-routing-schematics/ ); as I already wrote, this does NOT mean that using only one input (Guitar/Variax) is wrong, on the contrary, it is perfectly reasonable if you want cleaner tones: it gives exactly the same result as adding a fixed volume pedal at -6dB, but it's better, because you don't waste an fx block! in the same way simply no one can say that using both inputs is wrong or that it's causing problems on its own (unless he/she proves it); on the contrary, if you want to use a dual amp setup and you choose only one input (Guitar/Variax) then you have to waste an fx block (e.g. noise gate 100%-0%) to send the signal to both paths! This doesn't make sense to me at all. • I did the tests with a BC Rich Mockinbird with a DiMarzio Super Distortion on the bridge position, mounting GHS Boomers 11-50: not exactly a quiet signal... and I didn't even have to insert the input pad of the pod; so for me no clipping is caused by the use of both inputs alone at least for the effects I used in the tests of course, for example, the studio eq and the tube comp have a relatively low clipping threshold with respect to the POD internal routing BUT it is a simulation of an analog clipping so it's an intended effect! and again I've got nothing against the usage of the single input if you want to put one of those effects as the first and want it to be cleaner but please then do not crank the output of the effect or you'll be back to the start! • last but not least, please if you are confused by the routing do not think that you have to use the "path A only" solution (putting everything in path A, center its pan and mute path B ), you will get exactly the same tone and simplicity by using the defaults to be more detailed: - start from the default new tone (maybe switch the inputs to guitar/same jut to avoid any possible noise from other inputs) - use the amp in the default position (pre split) - if you don't need the parallel A/B paths simply do not touch them or the mixer - put the pre effects like distortion in the pre path - put the post effects like reverb in the post path and you'll be perfectly ok this should be written in the manuals, and in part is is, I needed to clarify it • for those of you who are interested, I created a setlist with the patches I used for testing, so that you can hear for yourself; in a note inside the zip file, there are the descriptions of the patches and of the tests I did http://bit.ly/K2xOcC EDIT: • some amplifiers/fx models can have a slightly different sound thanks to an attenuation to the signal sent to them independently from their drive pot position (maybe because there is some pre-drive-pot circuit ?!? thanks to gckelloch for the idea) this attenuation can be obtained with the "single input" setting only if your amp/fx is in the pre path, otherwise you need a workaround read here for more details: http://line6.com/support/topic/4586-pod-hd500-hd500x-input-settings-phase-issue-myth-and-facts-single-input-vs-both-inputs/?do=findComment&comment=30409 good reading/testing and merry christmas!!   11. Hey Guys, I'm considering buying a PODHD for live purposes. Im a Bassist (playing a BassPOD XT atm) but i have a Laptop on stage too, so i have to bring an Audio Interface with me too. So i ask my self if it's possible to have the POD HD output my bass signal through one output to my bass amp and the "dry" laptop signal connected via usb to the PA. signal 1: bass guitar -> podhd -> bass amp signal 2: laptop -> usb -> podhd -> PA I looked it up in the manual and the forums but couldn't find a definitive answer. If somone could help me I'd really appreciate it because it would save me from carrying lots of cables and equipment to the stage. thx!

  13. the HD500 Looper could attenuate the recorded signal by 6dB ... ...depending on your routing and settings. (all of this should be valid also for the POD HD Pro and bean, but NOT for the POD HD500X since its looper routing is different) The point can be summarized saying that the Looper is a "mono wet / stereo dry" fx block; you only need to be aware of this if you use the looper in "pre" position and you are one of those who think it's better to disable input-2 (for example by assigning it to variax) also, please, understand that what I'm trying to explain here is complicated so start reading only if interested, thanks to understand what I'm talking about, you need to read this post of mine and follow the signal on my graphs here: ...so, getting to the point: "the looper is a mono wet / stereo dry fx block" means that if for example you have a situation like this: - guitar connected to guitar input - Input-1: Guitar / Input-2: Variax - Looper in "pre" position - no fx - Amp Block in Path-A (path-A at unity and pan centered, Path-B muted) and you record a riff in the looper, the looped level will be 6dB less than the original signal! explanation: as a "mono wet / stereo dry fx block" the looper attenuates his inputs and sums them, then it records the result and, when playng back, sends the recorded signal to both his outputs so if you have disabled input-2, your recorded loop will have 6dB less than the original signal and will be splitted to outputs 1 & 2 of the looper, WHILE your dry signal will be present only at the output-1 of the looper now, if the first mono effect you have is in path-A, the mixed dry and -6dB looped signals from output-1 of the looper will be splitted to Left and Right channels of path-A and that mono effect will receive them at both its inputs otherwise, if the first mono effect you have is in the pre path you will hear no difference between dry and looped signals: indeed the looped signal will re-gain its lost 6dB because it will be present at both inputs of the effect (while the dry is present only on one input). so, to summarize: if you have Input-1: Guitar / Input-2: Variax and the Looper in "pre" position: 1- if the first mono effect is in path-A, it receives the dry signal at unity and the looped one at minus 6dB 2- if the first mono effect is in pre-path, it receives the dry and the looped signals both at minus 6dB consequences: This meas that, if your purpose was to have the ability to tweak your amp settings while listening to the results on the looped riff, and your amp is in path-A, you're going to get the wrong gain setting! (because you will be pushed to turn up your amp drive pot more than needed) Now, in the same situation (even while your riff is still looping), if you move your amp in "pre" position the loop will play at the same level but the dry guitar will play less distorted! solution? set both inputs to guitar (before recording the loop), and none of this problems will occur
