  1. Hi, got my first variax standard yesterday and blown away with the models. Not so with the Alt tuning which does not play isolated Alt tuning notes but a blend of original and Alt note/s. I’ve tried thru a helix lt and direct to amp (quilter tone block frfr) and on daw monitoring and it’s the same. However the recorded sound in the last instance was just the Alt notes. What’s going on? I ran monkey and can see, and have updated workbench and the supplied vdi-usb interface but monkey does not see the guitar as a device so no info on firmware or opportunity to flash etc. However, Workbench does download and update the presets to the variax and I have set custom presets with my 1/2step down setups but the same effect. The model/mags balance is set to 100% model for sure in all these examples. the only oddity I recall when unpacking was the model select knob fell off and had to be pushed back on but seems to do its job. Any advice please as I don’t want to give up on it just yet as I had high hopes.

  3. I have a 700 acoustic, but also a new Line6 Standard (strat). Admittedly I like to consider crazy things sometimes, so, I am pondering if I can use (with heavy modification), the Line6 "Standard" strat battery (like the JTV battery) to power my 700 Acoustic. The easy part is getting the connection (that is just some creative wiring and routing), so what I don't know, is the voltage/amp stuff. Specifically, is the "Standard" JTV battery gonna damage the (older) 700 Acoustic (based on a 9v or 6 AA battery) circuits? Anyone have a solid background with these circuits and wanna chime in on this crazy electrical possibility?
  4. Can't seem to find 2 factory spec measurements for my JTV69 or my Variax Standard tremolo rear edge height (as in pic - for a Fender it's 3.2mm) string height at 12th fret Yes, I know, I can just make it to whatever I'm comfortable with that doesn't affect playability or intonation. I'd like to be able to set it to factory standard though. Anybody know where I can find this information for the JTV69 and the Standard?
  5. My Variax 500 died and parts are not available to repair it. I am looking to buy a Standard or JT and see the battery is integral to for powering the new models. Will the old foot switch/power supply/stereo 1/4" cable from a 500 power the new models? I like not having to rely on a battery and also being able to route the signal via the foot switch to an amp and PA via the 1/4 and XLR outputs. Haven't been able to determine this from the product info.
  6. I don't have access to any variax in store. The standard feels like a Pacifica, great, easy enough to try out. What do the 59 and 69 most closely resemble? In particular the neck; the body doesn't matter as much to me. I prefer smaller necks and fretboards. My current guitar has nut width of 42mm, with medium jumbo frets and a 9.5 inch radius. Seems like all the variax have flatter profiles? But it's not just the specs, of course, so any specific (hopefully common!) necks I can sit down with to try out before mail ordering would be appreciated!
  7. hello guys,I’m running into some problems ,I downloaded the monkey and wb hd ,monkey have difficulties recognizing my guitar,I had to pull of and on the cables couple of times and so with workbench, both programs recognize(when they do) my standard as a jtv (I think it’s not right) and when I try updating the variax flash i get an error code code 80009000 (I’ll post the pic) i later managed to try all the usb on my acer aspire 3 laptop and i was able to let it be recognized as a standard by both monkey and wb hd(still had to plug and unplug several times), but the error code when flashing persists. the guitar has another weird problem, when i select custom one on the model selector knob and i switch model by the 5position switch, the guitar blinks on or 2 or 3 times (sometimes 1 sometimes 2 or 3) on the tuning knob and freezes,i havwe to remove the battery to make it work again...please help guys ,thank you.
  8. Hi! I'm new on this forum, I'm from Italy. Recently I purchased a Variax Standard white, I would like to transplant it into a stratocaster body and consequently replace the neck with a maple neck. I've already made a transplant of a Variax 300 into this body with fake pickups but now I would upgrade this body with all Variax Standard electronics and real pickups. Does exist any project on the web? Have anybody tried this transplant?

A: JTV guitars use a lithium-ion battery similar to that of a camcorder. A fully charged battery can deliver at least 12 hours of continuous performance. There is a four light battery life indicator on the battery compartment on the back of the JTV guitars that can be viewed by pressing the round flush black button next to the lights. 4 LEDs = 9+ hours 3 LEDs = 6+ hours 2 LEDs = 3+ hours 1 LED = less than 3 hours 1 LED blinking = less than 1 hour, recharge battery Note: Using a non-Line 6 JTV battery will void your warranty and may damage your JTV. Q: How can I power my JTV without a battery? A: There are 2 ways to supply power to the Variax without a battery. When connected to VDI Digital Input equipped hardware, such as a POD X3 Live, power is supplied via this connection. Or, use the optional XPS-DI direct box/power supply and TRS cable. With this box you can power the Variax and it also works as an A/B box to send your signal out of a DI to go direct to a board or acoustic amplifier with certain models. When powering the JTV guitar with either TRS or VDI connection, it is suggested to remove the battery from the guitar. Q: How long does it take to fully charge a dead battery for the JTV guitars? A: It takes about 12 hours to fully charge a dead JTV battery, but leaving it to charge overnight is a good time to do this. You can get a 4-6 hour play time by charging the JTV battery for 30-45 minutes. Q: What does the indicator light mean on the JTV battery charger? A: A solid RED light on the charger indicates that the battery is charging. A blinking RED light means that either the batter is fully charged, or the battery was inserted improperly into the charger and needs to be re-seated properly. If you know the battery needs charging and you get a blinking RED light when it is put into the charger, please re-seat the battery in the charger. Tuning Gears JTV-59US and JTV-89US guitars will have Hipshot Classic Guitar Tuning Machines. They are sleek, precision-built tuners with an ultra-smooth 18:1 gear ratio. The JTV-69US guitars feature the Hipshot Grip-Lock Locking Guitar Tuning Machines that are staggered in height for maximum tuning stability. For the Korean James Tyler Variax guitars, we went with 16:1 sealed tuners on all three models. They are die-cast, modern-built, solid tuners. They are sealed permanently and lubricated to work smoothly for years to come without slipping or binding. As with the JTV-69US, we went with locking and staggered versions of these 16:1 sealed tuners. As with the staggered locking tuners, the locking pole pieces within each tuner are staggered as well to match the size the tuner. They are measured 23.4mm (x2 forlow E/A strings), 21.9mm (x2 for D/G strings), and 20.4mm (x2 for B/high E strings). New HD Acoustic Models Q: When were the new HD acoustic models added to the JTV guitars? A: The new HD acoustic models were added in firmware 1.81 and are included in all newer firmware versions of the JTV guitars after that. Q: What does the Tone knob do on the newer HD acoustic models on the JTV guitars? A: The Tone knob on the new HD acoustic models is used to adjust the amount of body resonance for the model, but it was also specially programmed to have the top 10% of the Tone knob completely remove this resonance (at the 90-100% position) for those that prefer to remove that sound from the new acoustic models to closely resemble the flat nature of the older acoustic models from previous Variax guitars. Alternate Tuning Knob Q: How does the Alternate Tuning Knob on the JTV guitars work? A: The Alternate Tuning Knob on the JTV guitars can be used to any of the preset tunings that are saved to the knob. This knob has 12 settings including two labeled 'Model' and 'Standard' Set to 'Model,' the Alternate Tuning Knob lets you access the alternate tunings you created using the Variax Workbench software. These tunings are stored on your Variax's Model knob. Set to 'Standard,' the Alternate Tuning knob overrides saved tunings to set every model to standard EADGBE tuning. The Alt Tune knob's remaining 10 settings are hand-picked for each stle of James Tyler Variax guitar. Q: How do I reset the tunings? A: The on-board factory tuning reset feature was removed starting with HD firmware (2.x and higher). That procedure was to plug in while holding down the model knob. To reset the tunings in firmware 2.0+, they have to be loaded from the Workbench HD program. A: First, ensure that you have downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the Workbench interface from the Line 6 Downloads page. Then, ensure that the battery of the James Tyler Variax is charged and inserted into the guitar. Connect the Variax Workbench interface to the computer via USB, and also connect the James Tyler Variax guitar to the Workbench interface via the included VDI/Network cable. Lastly, connect a 1/4" cable into the guitar's output jack to power on the guitar (as the Workbench interface DOES NOT provide power to the guitar, this 'dummy' plug is necessary for the interface to recognize the JTV). The other end of the 1/4" cable does not need to be plugged into anything. You should see 2 green lights on the Workbench interface when everything is connected and being recognized properly. Factory Reset and Updating the Flash Memory Q: Why doesn't the Factory Reset procedure described in the manual work? A: The reset procedure described in the JTV manual was removed from the JTV guitars to make room in the memory for the Variax HD Acoustic models that were added in flash memory update v1.80. All JTV guitars with flash memory v1.80 and newer no longer have this factory reset procedure available. To perform a factory reset, re-install, rollback, or update the flash memory on the James Tyler Variax guitars, please use the following link: Variax Reflash and Software update F.A.Q. Q: If I tune physical strings on the guitar down or up on the JTV can I use the virtual capo? A: It is not recommended as it could cause audible anomalies. The guitars were designed to re-tune from E Standard tuning. Using the Virtual Capo to tune the guitar from any other tuning is unsupported. 10. Just bought a Variax Standard. Updated to latest firmware (was 2.21, now 2.23). Workbench HD loaded and working. All behaving as it should so far. The behavior of the battery status lights on the back of the guitar is a little odd, and not as described in the manual. Battery is fully charged. First press of the status button shows 4 lights, as it should. A second press lights up lights 1 to 4 in sequence (1 comes on, then goes off, then 2 does the same, then 3, then 4). A third press flashes light 2, then light 1, then light 1 a second time, then light 2 again. Fourth press goes back to showing the status (4 lights on again). Is this as it should be? What does it mean? It's not random - the sequence is exactly the same every time, so I'm guessing it's some sort of testing or status indication. I'm a bit worried about battery life though - I bought the guitar brand new today, but I know it's older stock and the serial number on the guitar starts Y15, which I guess means it's a 2015 guitar. Shelf life on these types of batteries is typically 3 years or so whether used or not.
  11. Hi all! I am new to the Line 6 family, have recently purchased a Line 6 Helix and am loving it and its flexibility! Now I want to move onto the Variax line of guitars, especially for the alternate tunings as I play in a cover band and we split between standard, 1/2 step, and full step down. Whilst at home I really enjoy the heavier side of music, in particular Drop B tuning... So the question is: Will the Variax Standard ($1400 AUD odd) be able to do this sort of tuning (Drop B) or do I need to go the Shruiken model...? Price isn't really a major issue, as you get what you pay for in everything, its more that I didnt want the 'full metal guitar look'... Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Trent
  12. My brand new Variax has had only intermittent success when I've used the switch to go from mags to modeling. Oftentimes it sticks when I use it, and sometimes I can depress it several times yet still the thing won't switch modes. This can happen while switching from/to either the modeling or the mags. I seem to notice a higher success rate if I remember to hold the switch down for a couple of seconds before releasing it. Other than the problem stated it seems properly installed, and it doesn't wobble or anything. Questions: Is the switch intended to operate in the manner described so as to curtail inadvertent switching while playing? If not, should I be worried? (It is still in the return period, so I could ship 'er back for a replacement model.) Is there a simple fix? THANKS in advance for your help! Mike
  13. I finally found a great deal on a (not) scratch n dent V-Standard at SW, and after 2.2 days I'm starting to get blown away. Let me back up. I entered the modeling realm with an HD500 when they were fresh (what, 2010?), thinking that I'd have more capability than the Spider Valve MkI that amazed me. First thing I noticed on the POD was that all the stock presets sucked. Playing at very low volume, I had to develop my own, which relied on a fair bit more gain than I'd normally go for in order to achieve any kind of crunch. I moved from FRFR to DT amps, but still, always kinda had more gain than I wanted (except when I went totally clean with the lovely Twin model). I picked up a Variax 600 and finally reached "dream rig" status, but really only liked the Strat models, Tele neck, and the Rick bridge. The alt tunings seemed kinda crappy too. Most of the other electric models were just too loud--much louder and with more gain than my real guitars with hot pups. When I first tried my new V-Standard, it was looking like more of the same (except usable mags). So I wondered, how do I get away from my presets with too much gain and into presets that work for my Variax? In an epiphany of sorts, I started trying out all those presets in my HD500 that sucked, and guess what? NO MO SUCKY! They're amazing, for the most part. Also, to my surprise, they all have variax settings already. So all I had to do was plug my dream rig in, using an ethernet cable and the digital L-6 Link, and now folks, I hardly have to tweak, I can just play my heart out! Turns out those patches were very well crafted using Variaxes of some kind, and so far about 2/3 are keepers! Has anyone else noticed this as well, or am I the first to stumble on this total treasure chest? The magnetic pickups are pretty sweet too! But the other thing I'm really thrilling over is the neck on the Variax Standard. I was afraid that something this flat, this thin, and with medium frets might not work for my aging knuckles, but I gotta tell you that even with 10's at concert pitch this thing is a joy for my hand! It's the most comfortable neck I've felt since the Japanese Variax 700 I've been wishing I'd have bought--and that's saying a lot. I do have questions: Is the light on the alt tuning knob supposed to be only momentary (unless you go to the "model" position)? I wish the thing would stay lit in mag mode so I could dial up the tuning I want without activating all those other tunings in between. Does anybody know how hard it would be to change pick guards? I'm thinking white would look very sweet with my sunburst brown... THANKS!!! Mike
  14. My variax standard came with the Strat type bridge flat against the body. Is it ok to set it up for floating, as I'm using Floyd Rose on my other guitars, with my playing style I use a lot of pull ups on my trem?
  15. Hello All, I've tried researching this topic myself but to no avail so I humbly come to the forum asking for help. I recently purchased a Line 6 Variax Standard (white) about 10 days ago. Three days ago, I finally got some time to explore the guitar. That's when I noticed that most of the alternate tunings when played through multiple amplifiers / heads give this horrible, screechy, octave, feedback when played. Standard works fine. Open G ("Blues G") works alright, except for the A string. Anything else, even 1/2 step down is unplayable. I really don't want to return the guitar as, when it comes to the model and playablity, I love it. What I've Done So Far 1. Downloaded Line 6 Monkey and reinstalled all firmware updates 2. Downloaded the workbench Are there any other patches / installations that can fix this, or is it a hardware issue that I will not be able to fix by myself? Overall, I think the guitar is awesome, but I can't look past the alternate tuning not work...even though I will, 99.9% of the time, play in standard. Any help is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mike
  16. Hopefully this will help those seeking solution to this same problem, I searched the forum and found nothing.......so hear it is; Two of the slits on the graphite nut had horrible slippage from day 1, UNbeliveable!!!! Mostly the high E string, just from picking the string it would POP right off the frigin nut!! and same for the D string only on bends around 2/3rd fret. Impatiently I started to hack away on it with a utility razor and still, finally I got the strings to stay put BUT now I have bad string buzz and neck and action/springs everything has been adjusted to various positions but....yes, I messed up and cut too deep. I have all the setup the way I like it but the high E buzz persist. Any one have the correct size info. for replacement NUT, so I can just replace it with a better one? I rather buy it my self then have to go through the warranty process and wait. Please HELP, thanx it advance.
  17. I just got my VA 2 days ago and every time i put it in the 12 string mode on electric or acoustic, the low E and A string have terrible what sounds like fret buzz. I set the intonation I changed the strings. The neck is fine. None of the other Gtr models on my instrument have this problem. It seems that others are having this problem as well. For the price I paid for this thing the quality Control should be Must be needs to be better. Any suggestion on how to fix this problem.

  19. In common with others, I found the neck on my Variax Standard a little narrow for my tastes. I play mostly fingerstyle, and it was impossible to precisely sound individual notes with the very tight string spacing. I measured the neck at 41.2mm (1 5/8") precisely, but E-E spacing on the factory nut was a very narrow 33.8mm. A quick search through Graph Tech's website found the Black Tusq XL PT-6225-00, a precut 41.2mm nut with a healthy E-E spacing of 34.9mm. Even though 1.1mm improvement sounds tiny, it makes a huge difference under the fingers. Heres a comparison of the nut widths: The factory nut popped off easily with a light tap with a plastic hammer. The new nut is a great fit, and only needed sanding on the base to bring the height down. I fixed the new nut with a single drop of CA glue, so that it can easily be removed in the future. The replacement looks better than the narrower factory nut, which didn't hide the truss rod cover: Here's the finished upgrade - you can see the frets are JUST wide enough to accomodate the new spacing: The guitar is now far more comfortable to play, and despite the wider spacing the strings don't slip off the neck (which was the biggest danger of this upgrade). For anyone reading and considering the upgrade, I recommend you measure your neck width and E-E spacing first. It could be that the factory simply cut the nut on my guitar too narrow. Also examine your fret ends - if the ends are finished with a shallow angle, you might suffer string slippage on the top & bottom E. However, this is a cheap & reversible upgrade - if you try it and it doesn't work out, just pop the factory nut back on.
  20. Hello, I just purchased and received my first Variax (Standard) Sunburst. First of all, it's a beautiful guitar and plays very well and feels great. I bought this guitar because I really needed a guitar that I could take to a gig and have so many different guitar types and tuning available like I'm sure many of you are thinking alike. Well, I was getting to know my new guitar absolutely stoked out. It played good for about 3o minute then it made a quick screeching sound and I just shrugged it off as it is working with some complex modeling systems and I kept playing. Well, maybe 10 to 15 minutes later this large airy noises started coming out of the guitar. When I turn the modeling system off and just use the regular SSS (Single-coil) system it fine but every time I push down on the modeling pot to on that guitar modeling system it starts that airy sound again. It's pretty loud and something I can't get by with. I also notice the 4th string (D string) is quite softer then the rest. I guess a new set of strings and setup might help with that but I'm totally bummed out with the noise problem. Please anyone of you can help me please let me know. I'm thinking that this could be a common situation but not sure. Much aloha from Hawaii and mahalo (Thank You) in advance.
  21. so i just bought a new variax standard to use with my pod hd500. everything seems to be working fine other than i can't save any guitar models to the presets on the pod. for example, if i wanted to change from a lester on one patch then switch to acoustic on another. the tunings change, the knobs can be assigned to certain effects, but for some reason, i can't change the guitar models. any idea why this might be? thanks!
