  1. I have the 'dream rig'. I have become more and more frustrated trying to get decent usable live tones from the rig to the point where I'm thinking of chopping it in for a guitar, an amp, and a couple of FX pedals. Glen Delaune has some wonderful sounding patches which I bought but when I changed the amps in the patches to the 'Pre' version, the sound died. When I try to ramp up the volume, it sounds like I'm playing through an old 5w Tandy (RadioShack in the US) blown speaker underwater. Now, if I leave the patches as they are; using the non-Pre amps models, the sound is great. My question therefore is why should I bother with the Pre's? Am I using the valves in my DT25 head as they were intended or am I in some what bypassing all of the goodness in the rig by using the full modelled amps? For reference here is my setup; JTV59p connected with VDI to HD500 connected with AES/EBU via L6 link to DT25 head connected with 2 x mono 6.3mm to 2 x L6 1x12 cabs Global inputs on the HD500 are set to Varian 1 and Aux 2
  2. Q: How do I perform a Factory Reset on my Variax Acoustic? Variax Acoustic 700 Hard reset: See the following link: Variax Reflash and Software update F.A.Q. Variax Acoustic 700 - Soft Reset Start with unit off (TRS cable and/or Variax Digital cable unplugged from guitar). Rotate the model selector to the SITAR position.Press and hold model selector (as in Save routine) while inserting TRS cable or Variax Digital cable to power up the unit and perform reset. Variax Acoustic 300 (Steel String and Nylon) These instruments do not have a reset function. The presets are simply a variety of settings that the user can overwrite. In other words, the user cannot lose anything, except for the original settings that are provided as examples/starting points. Q: Can I use the XPS power supply from a Variax electric guitar or bass to power my Variax Acoustic? A: Yes, you can power the Variax Acoustic with the XPS power supplies from the other Variax electric guitars and vice versa. Q: What is 'neck scale'? A: Neck scale is the distance from the bridge to the nut. All Variax electric guitars have a scale of 25.5" Q: How can I adjust the intonation on my Variax acoustic? A: There is no way to easily adjust the intonation on the Variax acoustic guitar. Different string gauges can effect intonation, so try using a different string gauge if you are having intonation issues. Q: How can I raise the action on my Variax 300 acoustic (nylon or steel) guitar a the bridge? A: If you need to raise the action on your Variax acoustic 300, you will want to shim the bridge underneath the single piezo strip. If you do not feel confident doing this procedure yourself, please have an authorized Line 6 Service Center perform the procedure. Q: What are the default alternate tunings on the Variax Acoustic 700? A: The PDF file attached to this answer provides a nice little grid of all the default tuning modes for the standard Variax Acoustic 700 models. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system, you can get it from the Adobe Website by clicking on the "Get Adobe Reader" link in the lower right hand corner of the webpage. Q: Can I load Electric tones on my Variax Acoustic? A: No. Because of differences between the architecture of the Variax Electric and Variax Acoustic guitars this is not possible. Please be aware that there are acoustic guitar tones available on the Variax electric models if you want to have acoustic and electric sounds on a single guitar. Q: What size allen wrenches are used on the Variax acoustic guitars? saddle height adjustment: 1.5mm Truss Rod: 4mm Q: What gauge of Phosphorus Bronze D'Addario strings are on the Variax Steel String Acoustic guitars? E:12 (high) B:16 G:24 D:32 A:42 E:52 (low) Q: What strings come with the Variax 300 Nylon acoustic? A: D'Addario ProArte Hard Tension strings Q: What is the hole diameter for the tuning gears? A: The Variax guitars accept the standard 10mm (13/32nd") tuning gear. Q: What happens if I use different brand or gauge strings on my variax bass or guitar? A: The results will be the same as changing string type or gauge on an analog bass or guitar. The Variax guitars are no different than most other guitars regarding setup and maintenance; the may need to be set up for different gauges play correctly, or seasonally to counteract climate changes. The Variax will accept any common string gauge for that instrument type. Q: Can I put nylon strings on a steel string instrument (and vice-versa)? A: You will have numerous mechanical issues if you restring a guitar with meant for one style of guitar with the other. Nylon strings tend to be thicker so they may not thread through the nut and/or tuning gear very easily. Nylon string will have at least 30 lbs less tension on the neck, so the truss rod may not be able correct for the correct tension, and may not be able to return to correct tension if/when the guitar is restrung with steel strings. Steel string installed on a nylon string guitar can crack the body/neck as it was never meant to take the tension increase of steel strings. Q: Where can I get replacement bridge pins for my Variax acoustic guitar? A: The bridge pins used on the Variax acoustic guitars are the same as any other bridge pin available from your local Line 6 dealer. Q: Do the Variax guitars have a low or high output impedance? A: All Variax guitars are low impedance, and should be treated like they are active instruments. Q: What kind of finish is used on the Variax? A: All Variax instruments use a polyester (yes, polyester) finish. Q: What type of glue is used in the hardware? A: Hide (i.e. horse) glue Here is a document with a list of the Acoustic 700 presets with Pitch settings: acoustic700pitchpreset.tmp.pdf
  3. Q: How do I perform a Factory Reset ("reflash") on my Variax 300/500/600/700/705? A: See the following link for the reflash procedure: Variax Reflash and Software Update F.A.Q. Q: The strings on my Variax Steel string are breaking consistently at the saddle piece. How can this be resolved? A: There may be a "burr in the saddle", meaning that there is an edge cutting into the string and causing it to break. Depending on where the string is breaking you may need to replace the piezo, the saddle piece, or both pieces. Please contact an authorized Service Center for more information. Q: I am getting a high-pitched 'squeal' when I have both the ¼" TRS cable and the Variax cable plugged into my PODxt/X3 or Vetta. How do I eliminate this? A: The high-pitched squeal is indicative of an overload of the power input buffers, as the unit is receiving power from both the TRS and the Variax Digital Cable. You will need to unplug one of the cables to remove the high-pitch noise. Q: What happens if I leave my Variax plugged into an amp while using batteries (not using the power supply)? A: If you leave your Variax plugged into your amp and are not using the power supply you will drain your batteries. If you remember to turn the volume knob on your Variax all the way down, the guitar will go into a low power 'standby' mode, but the batteries will still be draining (although at a substantially slower rate). Remember to unplug your Variax if you have finished a soundcheck and are heading off to dinner somewhere before your gig. Q: I have a dead string on my 300/500/600/700 (electric or acoustic) guitar - where can I get a replacement piezo? A: Replacement Piezo pickup/bridge saddle pieces can be purchased directly from the Line 6 webstore: Variax Piezo Element Replacements Q: When I first plug it in the sound goes on and off like the power is being turned off and on and I hear a constant click...click...click...through the amp? A: The problem sounds like it's a battery issue. If the battery's power drops below a current point, even though the batteries may seem good, the guitar will cut in and out. Even if you connect the power A/B box the guitar will still cut in and out. When this occurs, you must disconnect or change the batteries. Q: Where can I get a replacement neck and/or body for my Variax guitar? A: You can order your Variax replacement neck or body from Warmoth Instruments. Q: Can the Model Select knob on the Variax 300/600 be calibrated? A: No, the Model Select knob on the Variax 300/600 cannot be calibrated. If the model knob is "out of sync", try reflashing your instrument. If you are still having problems with the model select knob not selecting the correct model, you will need to have the unit serviced at your local Line 6 service center. Q: How do I calibrate the Model Select knob on the Variax 500/700? A: Here are the instructions on how to calibrate the Model Select knob on the Variax 500/700: *Please make sure that the output from the Variax 500/700 is plugged into an amplifier or monitoring source to hear the audio beeps from the guitar. 1. Unplug RJ45 cable from guitar. 2. Turn off Power (disconnect ¼" TRS cable from guitar). 3. Turn the volume up. 4. Pull model selector knob "up" and away from the guitar body and set it to position Custom 1. 5. Set pickup selector to 4th (neck-middle) position. 6. Set tone knob to middle position. 7. Turn on power (connect "¼" TRS cable to guitar). ONCE INITIALIZED, YOU WILL HAVE APPROX. 13 SECONDS TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE: 8. Turn tone control to min and then max. 9. You will now hear a beep sequence come from the amp or monitor source the Variax is plugged into. (The beeps will NOT come from inside the guitar itself.) 10. Turn model selector from "Custom 1" through all positions up to "Custom 2" this should be timed to approximately 1 second per physical step. (Counting: "one, one thousand", making sure to turn the pot on the one). 11. You will hear a low-high-low beep when completed. 12. Model selector will now be calibrated. 13. Press the Model Select knob back in to the guitar body to the "down" position. If you hear the low-high-low beep prior to completing the entire rotation of the model select knob, unplug the "¼" TRS cable from guitar and start over again until the timing is correct. Q: How do I calibrate the strings on a Variax Bass 700/705? A: To Activate String Calibration Mode: 1.Press down and hold the VOLUME knob, then power up the bass as follows: a.plug in a TRS cable connected to a powered XPS power supply, or b.plug in a VDI cable which is connected to a powered Bass PODxt Live. 2.The LED on the bass will appear to be orange or red (not green - if the LED is green, try again). Release the VOLUME knob after confirming that the light turned on orange/red.*** *** Note: If the light does not light up orange/red, make sure that you are able to press down on the Volume knob like a button. If it does not feel like a button, or if the knob does not travel down enough because it is to close to the pickguard, you should try removing the knob and pressing down on the Volume stem. In String Calibration Mode, all modeling is bypassed and the level of each string can be adjusted individually. To confirm you're in String Calibration Mode, listen to several Models, including a Synth Model; they should all sound the same: direct piezo. Important Note: As per the instructions below, the BLEND knob is used to adjust the volume of each string. The BLEND knob has a center detent, and that detent equals the Factory level volume for each selected string. You should adjust string levels from the center detent as a reference. Boosting levels too much may result in distortion, which is not good. For best results, listen to all strings and determine which ones may be too loud or too soft, then adjust accordingly, leaving the other strings at their detent levels. To Calibrate Individual Strings: (steps 5a & 5b for 5-string only) *After successfully powering up in String Calibration Mode, monitor the Variax Bass in the usual way, with the Volume knob at max, plugged into a bass amp, PODxt Live, etc. 1a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 1st Model, VinJ, to select the 1st string (G). 1b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the G string level with the other strings. 2a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 2nd Model, ModJ, to select the 2nd string (D). 2b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the D string level with the other strings. 3a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 3rd Model, PreBass, to select the 3rd string (A). 3b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the A string level with the other strings. 4a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 4th Model, Manta, to select the 4th string (E). 4b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the E string level with the other strings. 5a.Rotate MODEL SELECT knob to the 5th Model, Clang, to select the 5th string ( B). 5b.Turn BLEND knob up or down to balance the B string level with the other strings. When all strings sound in balance, press down on the MODEL SELECT knob to exit String Calibration Mode. The LED will turn green and your level changes will be saved. * Rotate the MODEL SELECT knob to load a Model and return to normal operation
  4. I need to swap out the jack plate assembly on my Variax 700. The contact when using modeled tones is intermittent. If I provide pressure to force the Neutrix connector all the way in, the modeling works but letting go on the pressure results in a disconnect. I have the replacement assembly from Full Compass. I have very bad eyesight (legally blind) so I need to know whether swapping jack plates is simply unscrewing the 4 screws securing the jack plate to the guitar body and then pulling the connectors out of their respective sockets or, if in addition, desoldering of connections from the current jack plate and soldering connections to the new jack plate is required. In the first case, I feel I can do it myself. In the second, I would have to arrange for a local tech to handle the swap. Smart blind folks don't do soldering by the touch method<g>. Thanks, Glenn
  5. Does anyone know if it is possible to custom-order a left-handed Variax guitar?
  6. Hi, I'm on that scary precipice of just about to order a new guitar. I have been torn between the JTV-69 Standard and the JTV-59. I know when in Acoustic modelling mode, the 5-way switch on the JTV-69 will change the acoustic model. But since the JTV-59 only has a 3-way switch I wonder if it has the same number of acoustic model choices. Thanks in advance for your help. P.S. - I sure wish there were Variax dealers in my area. I have never bought a guitar without playing it first, and to be honest, I'm a little nervous. Lee - Warwick, RI
  7. I love my Variax Standard, but I've been underwhelmed by the acoustic models. From what I've read online, you really need an acoustic amp for these to shine, which I don't have. I saw the Firehawk FX has an acoustic amp model specifically designed for to use with the Variax models. Has anyone used this? If so, do the acoustic models sound better through it? This is the only acoustic amp sim I have been able to find. Also, is it still worth it to get the Firehawk FX? I like the functionality of the Firehawk FX and that you can control the settings with an app as opposed to being locked in front of my computer. But is Line 6 phasing them out? I don't want to buy something that's already obsolete and in danger of losing support. Of course, I'd get the Helix in a heartbeat, but at 5 times the price it's WAY out of my budget. Sweetwater has 48 months interest free financing on these for the next two days, so I'm kind of under the gun to make a decision. Any info you guys can give is most appreciated. Thanks, and rock on! Sandy
  8. All the recent hype about the Fender Acoustasonic Telecaster motivated me to launch my "Electro-Roots Workshop" YouTube channel with a review of the Variax acoustic sounds. https://youtu.be/HyyO-1V-XLQ Much obliged!
  9. I have a 9 string, and I’ve been wanting to replace it with a variax for my projects I have. I tune to standard, but in 432, not 440. Standard is C# F# B E A D G B E, but I’d like to go lower if possible I was looking to buy a new variax, but wanted to make sure I can recreate everything the same as I have with my 9 string. I bought a used shurkien a few months ago, but it had issues, so I returned it. I do like the new JTV-89F because of the ebony and Floyd, but the shuriken has the longer scale. Any help is appreciated.

  11. Hi all! I am new to the Line 6 family, have recently purchased a Line 6 Helix and am loving it and its flexibility! Now I want to move onto the Variax line of guitars, especially for the alternate tunings as I play in a cover band and we split between standard, 1/2 step, and full step down. Whilst at home I really enjoy the heavier side of music, in particular Drop B tuning... So the question is: Will the Variax Standard ($1400 AUD odd) be able to do this sort of tuning (Drop B) or do I need to go the Shruiken model...? Price isn't really a major issue, as you get what you pay for in everything, its more that I didnt want the 'full metal guitar look'... Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Trent
  12. I am currently using my JTV59 with a Pod HD500x. I want to reduce my foot print and would like to replace the HD500x with the HX Stomp. Will I be able to get as good or better acoustic sounds from this proposed product union? I use both 6 string and 12 string models from the JTV59 and with the HD500x and I am currently getting pretty nice sounding acoustic guitar. I don't want to buy the HX Stomp and find it lacks in this primary area of my usage. Has anyone had an opportunity to pair the JTV variax type guitar with the HX Stomp? (Specifically in the acoustic guitar sounds)
  13. Forgive my ignorance, but I picked up a used Variax 300 recently. It was my understanding that you could set it up with different synthesized tunings, but the standard "Pilot's Guide" doesn't mention this. Am I wrong? Is there an "advanced user" manual that describes how to access extra features?
  14. My brand new Variax has had only intermittent success when I've used the switch to go from mags to modeling. Oftentimes it sticks when I use it, and sometimes I can depress it several times yet still the thing won't switch modes. This can happen while switching from/to either the modeling or the mags. I seem to notice a higher success rate if I remember to hold the switch down for a couple of seconds before releasing it. Other than the problem stated it seems properly installed, and it doesn't wobble or anything. Questions: Is the switch intended to operate in the manner described so as to curtail inadvertent switching while playing? If not, should I be worried? (It is still in the return period, so I could ship 'er back for a replacement model.) Is there a simple fix? THANKS in advance for your help! Mike
  15. I've seen in multiple threads and the manual that you should be able to change the variax model per snapshot; however, it only seems to allow it globally or per preset. Using "HX edit 2.6" (in the first image) you can see that there is an option for snapshot clicking on the camera in the upper right. But in the actual selection area (second image, right side), you only have the global and preset option, nothing on snapshots. I have a JTV59 I think it is, and am using the cat5 cable between it and the helix. Although this snapshot option should be visible independent of the variax. I didn't see anything in the release notes for HX edit that addresses it so I doubt upgrading will fix it. Has anyone else run into this or is there a work around? Thanks, Bobby
  16. I finally found a great deal on a (not) scratch n dent V-Standard at SW, and after 2.2 days I'm starting to get blown away. Let me back up. I entered the modeling realm with an HD500 when they were fresh (what, 2010?), thinking that I'd have more capability than the Spider Valve MkI that amazed me. First thing I noticed on the POD was that all the stock presets sucked. Playing at very low volume, I had to develop my own, which relied on a fair bit more gain than I'd normally go for in order to achieve any kind of crunch. I moved from FRFR to DT amps, but still, always kinda had more gain than I wanted (except when I went totally clean with the lovely Twin model). I picked up a Variax 600 and finally reached "dream rig" status, but really only liked the Strat models, Tele neck, and the Rick bridge. The alt tunings seemed kinda crappy too. Most of the other electric models were just too loud--much louder and with more gain than my real guitars with hot pups. When I first tried my new V-Standard, it was looking like more of the same (except usable mags). So I wondered, how do I get away from my presets with too much gain and into presets that work for my Variax? In an epiphany of sorts, I started trying out all those presets in my HD500 that sucked, and guess what? NO MO SUCKY! They're amazing, for the most part. Also, to my surprise, they all have variax settings already. So all I had to do was plug my dream rig in, using an ethernet cable and the digital L-6 Link, and now folks, I hardly have to tweak, I can just play my heart out! Turns out those patches were very well crafted using Variaxes of some kind, and so far about 2/3 are keepers! Has anyone else noticed this as well, or am I the first to stumble on this total treasure chest? The magnetic pickups are pretty sweet too! But the other thing I'm really thrilling over is the neck on the Variax Standard. I was afraid that something this flat, this thin, and with medium frets might not work for my aging knuckles, but I gotta tell you that even with 10's at concert pitch this thing is a joy for my hand! It's the most comfortable neck I've felt since the Japanese Variax 700 I've been wishing I'd have bought--and that's saying a lot. I do have questions: Is the light on the alt tuning knob supposed to be only momentary (unless you go to the "model" position)? I wish the thing would stay lit in mag mode so I could dial up the tuning I want without activating all those other tunings in between. Does anybody know how hard it would be to change pick guards? I'm thinking white would look very sweet with my sunburst brown... THANKS!!! Mike

  18. Hello! I have the chance to buy a JTV-59 and I love the body style but I want to make sure that it has the same capabilities as the shuriken. Can anyone tell me if there are any differences other than body style?
  19. Hi there. I´m a spanish musician playing several times a week in a cover band. Always have had Line 6 products, from the first POD model to HD500, Relay Wireless Systems... etc... Now I´ve sold my HD500 and bought a HELIX LT. I´m quite happy with it; good sound enough for giggin' and great flexibility to organize large setlists of songs with many changes and variations in gain and FX thanks to snapshots. My big problem is... I also have a Variax 500, wich I love, but I can´t see what to do now.. Old Variax models and Helix are not fully compatible. And.... there is no left handed models for the new variax range. I could put my Helix on sale and get an old HD 500 again, but it seems a lollipop solution, don't you think? I don´t want to give up to all my new bank of sounds (better than ever) and the "snapshots" flexibility. If Line 6 is not decided to create a lefty model for new Variax is OK to me, I´m fine with my old 500... but we need a solution for fixing this, and we need it soon, please. Is there any chance to create any sofware "patch" for the Workbench editor in order to connect with Helix? Or any special update for Lefty registered owners? Right handed people can update from Variax 500 to Standard, JTV or Shuriken.... but there´s nothing we can do so far.
  20. A few days ago somebody smashed out my window out in AZ and stole all of my gear from my trunk. Now, being that I’m 17, I rely heavily on modeling products to cut down on costs, but I still won’t have the funds for years to replace any of the equipment that was stolen. The idiot was able to get away with my Helix, Powercab 112 Plus, JTV-89F, and a few other miscellaneous items, but I was wondering if there’s some warranty that can cover products that were bought not directly from Line 6? They were all bought used and from pawnshops. Also is there some form of security meaure that prevents the Helix from connecting to another Line 6 account or some form of lock out precaution? I ended up creating a GoFundMe in the meantime to help fund the replacement items, but so far no one wants to donate or share the link since I’m not a 5 year old cancer patient. I’ll include the link just in case of some miracle happens from the guitar world. Thanks in Advanced, JB
  21. The Helix Hardware has good support for the Variax. Wondering if the software will integrate somehow with the Variax? I know the communication with the Variax is currently limited over USB, but because the VDI spec is closed we have no idea of what's possible using that or USB. FYI.. Here's my ideascale to build a stand-alone Variax interface that could be used along with Helix Native.
  22. Hi! Wondering if anyone knows if a new input jack would fix this. Or if i should chase something else. Here is what happens: JTV89F -> VDI -> HELIX. Mags give extra hum until I touch the end shroud of the VDI cable. Either end will do it. JTV end or HELIX end. It hums like a single coil. Using my 69S through the same path and I do not have the same issue. No change whatsoever when touching an end of the cable so I am thinking that at least rules out other components in the chain. Thoughts?
  23. While creating the Variax sample reference, I was reminded of a major, and often overlooked advantage of the Variax. My house suffers from a lot of electrical noise and the use of single coil pickups is a no go for me. Having the option to coil tap humbuckers is a complete waste of time for me. The answer is the Variax. Now I can get the tones I want with no noise. Yes, I can use filters to remove most of the noise, but at the cost of the tone. I can use a noise gate, but that only gets rid of the noise between notes and does nothing to remove the noise that overlays the guitar’s sound. The answer is the Variax. What would be great is if the Variax technology was licensed to manufacturers, to model the coil tapped sound of particular pickups and have that switched in when coil tapped.
  24. Would it be possible to add a new modern pickup model or two, to the Variax software/firmware, to bring it in line with Shuriken's modern good looks? I'm sure JTV owners probably wouldn't mind this either. I know a lot of folks like EMGs, Bare Knuckle, Fishman, DiMarzio, etc. I'm sure people have lots of opinions on which they'd wish for most. Would love to know how people feel about this one.
