How does one go about making the connection between the names of the sounds assigned to the variax various settings and helix seeing them correctly. When I try to assign a specific sound to a patch, all I see are what I assumed default variax settings and nothing specific to the Shuriken or even anything I create on the workbench.

Sorry for the clickbait-title but it is true! Never understood why the slots are so restricted and there is no playground-area which could be used to try custom models. https://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/An-area-to-store-unused-presets-within-Workbench-HD/902175-23508 Please give your vote to this idea :)

My variax standard came with the Strat type bridge flat against the body. Is it ok to set it up for floating, as I'm using Floyd Rose on my other guitars, with my playing style I use a lot of pull ups on my trem?

Hi All Losing my mind here..Helix and Workbench HD, Variax JTV 69 cant get them talking... -2.21 Helix installed. Line 6 Monkey will see JTV-69 (1.74) and flashed it with 2.22 Flash memory. I run Workbench HD 2.13 and I get an error, 'The connected Variax is not compatible with Workbench HD. You must use a James Tylers Variax version 2.0 or higher.' If I disabled MIDI in Helix (Global-MIDI-MIDI to USB on) I only get a blank scan dialog and no Variax is seen. I went nuts trying to get this working and even installed the old Variax Workbench connected VDI to my HD 500 and it was seen as expected. I am using the VDI barel plug ethernet cable. I even tried a normal Ethernet cable and that connected to Helix just fine (I guess its the correct pin out) but in no case have i been able to get Variax and Helix + Workbench working together. Workbench HD just inst seeing Variax through Helix. What the heck am I doing wrong?? Is the Variax JTV-69 (blue) not really supported with Workbench HD? Anyone out there who knows whats going on please let me know. Windows 7.

Hi, Now that my beloved Variax 500 is working again (thank you Line 6!!), I'm looking to connect it to Workbench and adjust some of the guitars and pickups. I no longer have the old USB interface, but i do have a Helix LT. Question - can a legacy item like the Variax use the Helix LT as an interface with the older Workbench (As I don't think the Workbench HD would work with my older guitar) thanks in advance!

Built A Better Variax Vdi Cable
joebar23 posted a topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
Thought I would share my cable that I built to replace the cheap one provided with my JVT 89 Guitar. I got the Neutrik connectors from Parts Express www.parts-express.com part # 092-181. The cool thing about these connectors is that they can be installed on existing RJ-45 cables. The actual cable came from Amazon.com listed under "Aurum Cables - Cat5e Network Ethernet Cable (75 Feet - Red Braided)". I shortened it to 25 ft by cutting it and adding an RJ-45 connector. Total cost was about $30.00. It is much better than the supplied cable and works great. -
Greetings, I'm wondering if anyone has used the Variax/HD500 (and maybe DT) to simulate an On-Board Effects Loop. The purpose of an OBEL is to bring the post-effects sound back into the guitar in order to keep the effects sound consistent and not subject to the output volume of the guitar. Put another way, when you typically turn the volume on your axe down, the lower output cleans up the signal from the effects. Using an OBEL means this won't happen, and the volume now controls the output, post effects. An OBEL was famously used by Jerry Garcia. Here's a good explanation of OBEL: http://shop.phredinstruments.com/ProductTab/ProductCustomTab/3 On the Variax, you can use the HD 500 to assign the guitar volume control to operate the amp volume rather than the guitar pickup output (when using modeled pickups). I think this would achieve the same effect: the output of the Variax to the effects remains constant, but the post-effect output volume varies. Has anyone here used this method to achieve a similar result?

Hi. Can someone please verify the behavior of the chosen input-type of a patch. I have a traditional e-guitar, a Variax 600 and a JTV-59 and I have recognised a strange behavior, I would like to understand. For every type of listed guitar I have a setlist with similar patches and every setlist contains patches where the input-type (guitar, variax, variax mags) is chosen on the level of the preset (not global). I thought this would be necessary to get the different guitar-types to work. Today I recognised that I was playing in a wrong setlist on my POD HD500 (backup-device, no X) using a VDI-cable. This was my main setlist where I have selected "Variax Mags" as the on and only input (2. is the unused "Aux"). So I wondered why there ever was a tone and I could switch models too? So I like to ask if there is a fallback logic which I can count on, so I can reduce the needed setlists to a minimum. I recognised that "Variax Mags" allows a fallback to "Variax". But what about playing with Input "Variax Mags" and storing a chosen model and/or tune when playing my JTV? Does the stored state overwrite the chosen input-type on a preset-base? And is there the possibility to fallback to "guitar" if I play a "Variax" or "Variax Mags" preset too? Unfortunately I am not able to test this by myself because I have left my POD HD500x and my two other guitars at rehearsal and just have my POD HD500 and my V600 in reach for the next week. I always play VDI-cables on both Variax. Thank you in advance, Sascha

I know this is a legacy product, but any insight would be super appreciated. I have a Variax 500 that used to work just fine, but recently stopped producing any sound. For the record, I'm strictly running off batteries at this point but this Variax did use to also work fine with a Pod XT using the variax cable. When I noticed initially the 500 wasn't working, all I got was occasional weird wooshing, spacey sounds, but absolutely no guitar sounds. I checked all the connections, made sure the batteries are fresh, and now I get no sound whatsoever. It doesn't matter where the knobs and switches are, there's just no sound coming out of this guitar. The online research I've done points to "maybe" the bridge cable being bad (it looked fine when I looked at it), but is there anything else I can try and fix to get my 500 working again? thanks!

Very poor from Line6. it's a year meanwhile since my last wish for a Variax as a Lefthand... they bring out new stuff en masse, Firehawk, Firehawk 1500, Helix, but what can i do, i still can't use the best of it, the handling with a lefthanded variax... so, i start ebay next weekend and sell the whole gear... 2 piece of DT25, HD500, and perhaps the Firehawk FX.... very poor strategy of Line6...

I have a Variax 500. Being lefthanded, getting a newer Variax isn't possible. But I look at all the new Variax's available, and I'm jealous of the fact that they don't require the VDI cable to power the guitar. They have rechargeable lithium ion batteries. I realize the battery housing is different, but in theory, is there any reason why a new Variax power supply couldn't somehow be retrofitted into a Variax 500?

I've downloaded the spank 2 preset from a message in this forum (thanks, Derek32999!), and I see the 89 high-gain guitars have been posted for 59 and 69 users. Is anyone hosting a place for Workbench HD files while we wait for Customtone to feature a Variax section?

Hi folks, I have just got into the X3 live world (OK, behind the time curve - forgive me!) and got myself a Variax guitar as well. I'm really keen to find my way to tones other people have made on customtones.com by the type of tone it is, rather than by reference to a particular guitarist or song. Is there a forum where people discuss / recommend tones? If not - can anyone at least get me started with any suggestions for:- - A good general purpose tone for accoustic simulations on the Variax. Just a nice accoustic amp / EQ, maybe a good reverb. Not adverse to a drop of chorus, but like a fairly natural sound if possible. - A good general purpose crunch tone for 60s rock type sounds. Thanks for reading.... Very happy with my new purchases. Major upgrade from my old Korg AX1500 and a Squier strat. They've served me well, but nice to have a new and better quality overall sound as I'm getting into home recording and the AX1500 was a bit 'not-great' in the amp modelling stakes.

Can the firehawk 1500 amps do all the orange amps because I just need one amp for gigging. All my orange amps are heavy to bring around so can the firehawk 1500 do that.

I have an issue with excessive hum and the jtv59. I'm running guitar via VDI cable into a HD500. I'm using the magnetic pickups and the modelling at the same time and using a panner to switch between them. For example: Acoustic jmodels and panning into a heavy magnetic-based tone. I'm running XLR right out to a EV monitor on stage and XLR left out to board. I'm getting a horrible hum now. It has happened before but seems to have gotten worse. I switched inputs in the presets in the pod to just the variax (right before the gig in a panic) and the buzz is gone. Trying to brainstorm causes and solutions. The hum sounds like a typical ground loop. I've tried the ground lift on the pod and it seems to have no effect. This venue has bad power (as does a lot of places we play). Getting a few furman SS-6B filtering power strips that may help. I could just run to the board and the send guitar back to wedge. Thought about getting the pyle PHE400. http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/555-16055?scode=DD1443&trk_msg=5JJO54U26DJ4B18OSAJ6TRMJ1K&trk_contact=765CTN3VQE3OND4R5FLA07VMJO&utm_source=Listrak&utm_medium=Email&utm_term=555-16055&utm_campaign=DD1443 Thought that is maybe a grounding issue in the JTV. If this was a normal guitar, I would gut it and foil and ground the pickup cavity. I'm a little hesitant to dig into it but will likely crack it open soon and take a look. I saw the pickup diagram that is flowing around. Afterthought: I don't know if switching to the magnetics would bring hum back. That would be a great test. Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi. I just received my new Variax JTV 69 and when I connect it to the Helix, I only get the magnetic pickups. Is it necessary for the battery to be charged and installed in the Variax? Can it be a malfunction? I will continue to do tests, but I think it is not normal. :(

I have had major issues with my JTV 69 staying in tune. It will not stay in tune for more then a few minutes (usually goes sharp). I have a replacement neck from Warmoth (that I love -- all maple Vortex with stainless frets). I had a guitar tech look at it and he recommended a Super-Vee Mag-Lok. I think this has addressed the tuning issue, but I hate the way it makes the trem feel. It's difficult to use it subtly (it would work okay for dive-bombs, but I am more of a Bigsby type player). Is this a common issue with this variax? I have also replaced the pups with Lace Sensor Rainbow pack and also love the mag sound now. I really want to stay with the variax, should I sell it and buy a new one? Do I need a USA version? note: Using Nanoweb 10's

Hi. Just in case anyone like to have models of JTV-59' magnetic-pickups, here is my first try. This gives you the possibility to switch to custom-tunings with the sound of your mags. Of course the tone-results may differ from guitar to guitar, but with my '59 I am 95 % there. 2017-01-01 JTV59-ModeledMags.zip content of the ZIP-file are three presets, no bank or bundle HAPPY NEW YEAR :)

Hello, I have a somewhat special question. I use the POD HD500X with a 4 cable method over a tube amp (ie no modeling) and a Strat. For some songs, I use the Variax with sitar and acoustic guitar sounds. These sounds should of course not go through the amp, but with some effects directly into the mixer. Question: How do I have to configure the POD so that the Strat signal will only go through the Amp (not the Mixer) and the Acoustic Sounds into the mixer (not the amp)? Somewhere I've read something, with a configuration of the two channels left and right, but does not know how that goes ... I would be very glad if someone could help me here. Thanks and Regards Martin

Hello All, I've tried researching this topic myself but to no avail so I humbly come to the forum asking for help. I recently purchased a Line 6 Variax Standard (white) about 10 days ago. Three days ago, I finally got some time to explore the guitar. That's when I noticed that most of the alternate tunings when played through multiple amplifiers / heads give this horrible, screechy, octave, feedback when played. Standard works fine. Open G ("Blues G") works alright, except for the A string. Anything else, even 1/2 step down is unplayable. I really don't want to return the guitar as, when it comes to the model and playablity, I love it. What I've Done So Far 1. Downloaded Line 6 Monkey and reinstalled all firmware updates 2. Downloaded the workbench Are there any other patches / installations that can fix this, or is it a hardware issue that I will not be able to fix by myself? Overall, I think the guitar is awesome, but I can't look past the alternate tuning not work...even though I will, 99.9% of the time, play in standard. Any help is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mike

Hi everyone. I am new here. New Variax Standard does not work. Out of the box I played guitar for 40 - 60 minutes and then suddenly stopped, the silence :(. I checked the batteries = OK, I checked the cables = OK. Knobs shine :). Progam Worckbench recognizes and responds to the guitar. Magnetic Pickup = OK guitar playing. what can I do ? can you help me somehow? Adam p.s sorry for my English. Greetings from Poland

I am interested in hacking an old Pod (or whatever) to provide a simple 1U (or smaller) unit that can be midi controlled. Basically it's a way to build my Variax VDI Idea so I don't have to wait for Line 6. What is the smallest / most hackible Variax controller that can work with my JTV and output both mags + model? Can you order just a mainboard from Line 6? This would be just for controlling the models and providing both feeds as inputs to another system.

I have had a JTV-69 for almost three years and have a somewhat love hate relationship. I use it a bunch to play with bands because of its versatility but am not the biggest fan of its play-ability. I have a fleet of various other guitars and I have to admit I am more a Les Paul or PRS Custom 24 fan. I love the Strat sound but not the biggest fan of its neck feel. I also love my Ibanez shredding guitars but play a different style of music. The JTV-69 doesn't give me higher register access and I just don't get a great feel for the neck. My question is -> is it worthwhile picking up a JTV-89F for its play-ability, neck feel and upper register access? I know it will have the same modeled sounds but it mags will be completely different but I use the guitar mostly for the modeled sounds anyway...
