  1. I thought I’d share a quick and cheap solution for those who lost their Variax VDI socket cover/plug. Google for “neutrik scf”. Works great and looks neat. Cheers!
  2. Hi. Hoping someone may be able to guide me. I've been using HD500X for a few years (with DT25). Recently I decided to start using JTV over VDI. I had a couple of issues at 2 gigs in a row this weekend. 1: When I powered the unit up for the start of our set at Gig 1 it appeared normal, and then within a few minutes of starting up, twice in quick succession it appeared to go back to the "Line 6" logo start up screen and I momentarily lost signal. This was not the first time I'd gigged with the VDI, but was the 1st time I'd gigged with additional patches where the POD was controlling the tuning. it was strange and made me very nervous for the the duration of the gig, but ultimately the POD performed as normal thereafter. 2: Before the 2nd Gig I plugged the POD into Monkey to see if any updates might be required. Only some drivers needed updating - Flash was all up to date. So I saved my setlist, did the update and then reloaded my setlist onto the POD and headed to the gig. Things started well, but during the 1st set something weird happened: I stepped on preset 1B halfway through the set, only to find that the POD had copied preset 1A onto 1B. I now had 2 identical patches and had lost my original preset 1B which I had been using just fine in the previous song. Fortunately, I had taken my laptop with me to the gig "just in case" of any issues, so after the 1st set I reloaded a set list from a few gigs earlier (where the POD was not controlling the tuning - as this was the only real change I'd made before I started getting issues) and made some changes to the main patches I was using in order to try to reduce the DSP being used, just in case this was causing any of the issues. Never had this happen before and thought it was strange and worried me. Can anyone please help me: 1: Explain what may have caused this? 2: Anyone definitely had this exact thing happen to them before? 3: I'm thinking some sort of Reflash/Factory Reset would be sensible - has this been shown to be the solution to these symptoms? Everything I've seen re: DSP suggests that the system will flag issues when creating the patch rather than let me create and use something that won't work properly. Seems strange that if DSP is the reason, it would let me use it fine for half the gig and then make random unwelcome changes on my behalf... trying to figure out if my unit has developed a fault, or if this set up will simply be unreliable and I may need to either give up on the Dream Rig set up, or think about going to Helix (which although I'd love, does not yet have DT25 integration, and I struggle to justify the outlay given the limited number of sounds I actually need/use, and the POD - in theory - pretty much does all that I need). Any help welcome!! Many thanks in advance!
  3. I'll start with a simple question, which someone may be able to answer off the top of his/her head. Then, I'll go into a tedious explanation of what I'd like to accomplish. First, the question: If my JTV-59 is connected to a compatible Line 6 device with a VDI cable, will the analog output at the guitar's 1/4" output jack be suppressed, or could it be connected via a standard guitar cord to play through an amplifier? Now for the rest of the story, which may spark an alternate solution, or may result in a 'You can't get there from here' unhappy ending... The battery on my JTV-59 doesn't seem to have much longevity, despite the fact that I use the mag pickups more than the modeling. I'd like to be able to power it for everyday use and practice by connecting it to my Pod XT Live via VDI. But I'd prefer to go wireless into my Amplifi 30 through a Relay G10 plugged into the 1/4" output, because I like the sound of the Amplifi more than the output of the Pod XT played through my stereo amplifier. In this scenario, I'd essentially be using the Pod XT Live as an expensive power supply. But that's ok -- it's paid-for... If the output continues to be available at the 1/4" jack while connected via VDI, it would also open up the possibility to use the Pod XT Live to change models on the JTV, which would be VERY cool. I'd still be using the Amplifi for amplification, but wouldn't have to play with the knobs and switches on the guitar in the middle of a song. Another option that solely addresses the power issue may involve the XPS footswitch, which I've basically never used, although I have at least two of them, supplied with my Variax 500 and 600 guitars. Maybe it would be possible to power the Variax with the XPS and it's 3-conductor guitar cable, and plug the Relay G10 into the 1/4" output of the XPS box? I know: I could try these combinations, myself. And probably will. But I thought it would be useful to throw these scenarios out there and see if others have tried or given thought to possibilities such as these. Look forward to hearing any ideas or suggestions...
  4. The VDI cable disconnect issue: I think I may have found the issue here. The cables I bought don't have the shrink tubing ( sweetwater vdi cable ). Mine both have a black knurled "nut" shown by the red arrows and if those aren't tight, the jack inside can move in an out. This may have been causing my disconnects if the cable was bumped in that area.
  5. Hi, I was wondering if there are vdi cables available to purchase in Europe? I am searching for a better quality that the one from line6 offers. Some previous posts discuss about such alternatives, but they seems to be only available in the US. Thanks for any advice you may have!
  6. Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and joined just after buying a jtv-69 used. It came with a battery and a charger, but no digital interface in the case. So my question is: what exactly is needed in order to connect it to my macbook and eventually to workbench hd? will a regular ethernet cable work? do I have to use the line6 cable? even on that cable, it's written that it's meant for digital connection to a PodXT and the like - so I'm not sure that this is meant to be used to connect the guitar to a computer. Maybe it's mentioned somewhere but I honestly could not find the complete info. is the "DVI" the cable itself? or some kind of a converter/adapter? assuming I have the line6 cable, does it connect to a usb or the ethernet port? how does this chain look exactly? If you could help a newbie I would be very grateful!
  7. HELP!!! I have a Variax 700 bass with VDI cable, it does not work with HD500x pod or pod XT live bass. Connecting to the XT Live pod freezes the screen. Until the cable is unplugged, it will restart. With the HD500x pod, I connect a regular RJ45 cable and work for a while but then the HD500X pod restarts. The VDI cable works well with JTV59 variax Can anybody help me?
  8. Hi. Can someone please verify the behavior of the chosen input-type of a patch. I have a traditional e-guitar, a Variax 600 and a JTV-59 and I have recognised a strange behavior, I would like to understand. For every type of listed guitar I have a setlist with similar patches and every setlist contains patches where the input-type (guitar, variax, variax mags) is chosen on the level of the preset (not global). I thought this would be necessary to get the different guitar-types to work. Today I recognised that I was playing in a wrong setlist on my POD HD500 (backup-device, no X) using a VDI-cable. This was my main setlist where I have selected "Variax Mags" as the on and only input (2. is the unused "Aux"). So I wondered why there ever was a tone and I could switch models too? So I like to ask if there is a fallback logic which I can count on, so I can reduce the needed setlists to a minimum. I recognised that "Variax Mags" allows a fallback to "Variax". But what about playing with Input "Variax Mags" and storing a chosen model and/or tune when playing my JTV? Does the stored state overwrite the chosen input-type on a preset-base? And is there the possibility to fallback to "guitar" if I play a "Variax" or "Variax Mags" preset too? Unfortunately I am not able to test this by myself because I have left my POD HD500x and my two other guitars at rehearsal and just have my POD HD500 and my V600 in reach for the next week. I always play VDI-cables on both Variax. Thank you in advance, Sascha
  9. I am interested in hacking an old Pod (or whatever) to provide a simple 1U (or smaller) unit that can be midi controlled. Basically it's a way to build my Variax VDI Idea so I don't have to wait for Line 6. What is the smallest / most hackible Variax controller that can work with my JTV and output both mags + model? Can you order just a mainboard from Line 6? This would be just for controlling the models and providing both feeds as inputs to another system.
  10. The Helix Hardware has good support for the Variax. Wondering if the software will integrate somehow with the Variax? I know the communication with the Variax is currently limited over USB, but because the VDI spec is closed we have no idea of what's possible using that or USB. FYI.. Here's my ideascale to build a stand-alone Variax interface that could be used along with Helix Native.
  11. I know - there were some threads dealing with that. But I would like to talk this up again in a more moderate way :P I am still owner of the 'old' dreamrig: JTV (Variax) --> POD HD (500) --> DT amp. POD HD is connected to computer via USB. This signal chain and workflow is really amazing! I can edit edit every part of the chain via PC and hear the 'final result' at once without regulary interrupting (annoying plugging / unplugging) the signal flow (no USB interface needed for editing Variax models). So, please  (guess what...) I know, it's on the Helix checking off list (as DI called it). To me, it'll be a wonderful christmas present - so this is on my 'Helix wish list' this year!
  12. I'm trying to find a way to extend my practice time by connecting my JTV ( or strat ) to a laptop and leaving the HD500x for final pre-gig setup and practice. Although I upgraded to a much better VDI cable I suppose I could use the original one to get a JTV - USB - laptop connection, but not sure how that would work with software like Guitar Rig. Or I could get something like the guitar link. Ideally I'd have something better than a bare guitar signal ( a few effects ) which could mix with a slowed down mp3 or youtube video for practice out through headphones. 13. I just bought a used Vetta version 1. I bought it sight unseen with the longboard for a really good price. I really hoped that it already had the VDI expansion card installed, but alas.... it did not. Of course, I have had no luck sourcing one. I turn, in desperation to you all. Where can I find a VDI Expansion card for my Vetta. I have been reading about a lot of "dead" Vettas. I'd love to pick up a VDI card from someone who pulled it out of their old Vetta. Scott
  14. Hey everyone, I was leading a rehearsal last night and was having some weird problems with my JTV. I use a Helix currently and earlier in the day had tweaked a couple patches and tried a few different guitar models, all with good results. I was however just using a 1/4 cable in my office. At rehearsal I switched over to the VDI to make sure my battery wouldn't die from playing a lot during the day and noticed a few different things: - Tuning - With the VDI cable, I was unable to get the guitar in tune. The tuner on the Helix looked fine, even just listening with my ears and the volume down sounded fine. But with the volume on (models and mags I think) the tuning was all over the place. Couldn't play a chord without sounding strange - EQ/Frequency/Phasing? - With the VDI I was also noticing that none of the sounds I had programmed were anywhere close to what I had worked on. I'm used to this a little bit with going from headphones to a floor wedge (through PA) but I could not believe how awfully different it was last night. It sounded as if I had no lows, extremely bright highs and a thin sound. After about a half an hour, I got fed up and grabbed a 1/4 in. cable (should've done sooner). All the problems were gone! I had my sounds back that I had been happy with. Has anyone had a similar issue? Upon a quick visual inspection, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the VDI and it shouldn't be the guitar if it all works well through the 1/4 in jack. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks
  15. I want a preset to always be saved with the Preset Variax Model set to Don't Force, even after using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model. I usually test preset changes with several Variax models, but I don't want the Variax model saved with the preset. I am using a Variax guitar and Variax cable with a Helix preset that has the Input, Per Preset, Variax Settings all set to Don't Force and the Global Variax settings all set to Don't Force. Using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model also changes the Helix Input, Per Preset, Preset Variax Model to the same model. Then when I save the preset, the Per Peset Variax model is saved with it, and any time I load that preset, the Variax guitar is forced by the Helix to use that Variax model. I don't want this; I want the preset to always be saved with the Preset Variax Model set to Don't Force, even after using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model. My work-around is to change the Preset Variax Model back to Don't Force every time I save a preset, but that is very tedious when I'm saving often. Is there a way to make the Helix always saving the Preset Variax Model as Don't Force after using the Variax guitar's controls to change the Variax model? Thanks. P.S. I love the Helix! Great job, Line 6, and thanks for an excellent support forum and for continuing development even though you are probably already working on the successor to the Helix that we'll see five years from now.
  16. Doing some tests I found out the audio with the VDI cable is just awful. With the regular pickups it sounds bright as hell, and at a lesser level it will dull the variax models. Using a regular cable makes the Variax experience much better IMO, witch is frustrating, because I got the Variax with the Helix because I wanted to be able to change my Variax settings through Helix, as well as the benefit of not having to worry about the battery. Is there a work around or am I stuck?
  17. Hey all - I recently picked up a JTV-59 and love it. I run it into my POD HD500 and Marshall JCM900 using the 4 cable method. For any of the modeled presets it sounds great. I run these into the effects return on the Marshall.. Before the JTV, I ran some presets through the "front" of the amp using the FX loop block in the HD500 and the 4 cable method. Now with the JTV running into the HD500 through the variax input/VDI, I get serious feedback when I try to engage the dirty channel. Basically the FX loop doesn't work. I tried to a/b the output from the HD500 (one to effects return on amp, one to front of amp) and only the effects return works. Anybody have this problem? I want to run the JTV through VDI to control models and supply power. But want to option to bypass HD500 amp models and go into front of Marshall for the dirty channel tone. Advice much appreciated. steve
  18. I discovered something quite disturbing this week. In order to put stomp box pedals in front of the HD500, I was testing my Variax JT69US and HD500 by plugging in both the VDI and 1/4" cables to the guitar and setting the HD500 to accept only the GUITAR input. The result was an electronic sounding noise bed so loud, it was unbearable. This happened with both the Mags and Variax PUs. Unplugging the VDI connection and operating on just the battery works fine with no noise. There's obviously electrical interference causing this issue. Has anyone else experienced this or can reproduce it on their rig? Any Line 6 techs have an explanation and/or fix for it?
  19. I tried to set up my JTV TMOD-5 (neck pickup) model to be similar to my Fender 60's Player Tele neck pickup. I had my JTV connected to my HD500 with VDI and my Tele connected via 1/4" Guitar In. The HD500 connected to my PC via USB and Windows HD running. I had L mono out going to a mixing desk connected to a reference amp connected to Tannoy Reveal monitors. I just wanted to get the model strings balanced and sounding similar to the real thing - I didn't think I could get them to sound identical, just similar. So I was just using the same CLEAN sounding amp model patch in the HD500 for the comparison. Both guitars had Volume and Tone controls on Max. First off, I was surprised by how different they both sounded - the Fender Tele with rich warm notes on the 3 low strings and treble attack on the high strings but the JTV model just had high treble attack across all strings. So I looked at the GUITAR-IN-Z setting and it was set to AUTO. So I tried removing the fx blocks before the amp in the patch and when I was left just with the amp, I was getting a brighter sound but still nowhere near as bright as the JTV model. So I tried manually setting the GUITAR-IN-Z value and even with it on the highest level of 3.5M the Fender Tele did not sound quite as bright as the JTV model. It was getting closer but still far enough apart to easily be able to tell the difference. Nothing more I could do to adjust the Fender Tele tone, so I looked at options for the JTV model, and the only things available in Workbench HD are the Volume pot resistance value and the Tone pot resistance and knob position. As I always have my Tone on max, the Tone pot value was not going to be of any use, unless I decided to save a lower Tone knob position with the model. This prompted me to ask "why can't I set the input impedance for the Variax VDI just like I can with the Guitar In?". Surely that would be the best option? But it's not available. So the next question "why is it not available?". My testing with the GUITAR-IN-Z showed that those changes made a big difference to the tonal input of the guitar. Surely we should be able to do the same with the JTV? Or if not, then surely the JTV models should be very similar to the equivalent standard guitar models without any need to tweak - but they are not - they are much brighter and full of high end - well the Tele Neck pickup model certainly is. So - I could go into Workbench and spend some time experimenting with the different volume pot values to see if I could match the tonal qualities of the model with the real thing, or I could experiment with the tone pot values and setting of the knob position to achieve a similar tonal quality. But these options seem way over the top and time consuming and unnecessary when the Variax models should have the input impedance modelled in some way already or at the very lest they should respond like the AUTO setting does for Guitar In and match chosen fx or amp, but they don't. They don't appear to have any modelled tonal attenuation due to "lead length" or "Input impedance" - they seem to be constant with no high end attenuation occurring as with a real guitar/pickup/lead combination. Does anyone know why the VDI implementation does not allow for any impedance matching like Guitar-In-z ? Does anyone have any suggested values for volume and/or tone pots that I could try in Workbench HD to make the JTV Tmod-5 model behave tonally like a real Fender Tele neck pick up in terms of attenuated high end? Thanks in advance.
  20. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to get the best sound out of my JTV-59? After watching more videos showing off the sound, I'm convinced something is not right, maybe its the Amplifi amp I'm using (which means I can't use the VDI cable, WHAT???), or is it the 20 year old 1/4" that I play through, or is it just me...I cannot get mine to sound anything like the sounds in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meqkcELwew0 I'm mostly referring to the acoustic models that sound amazing in the Line6 video - 1:20-2:25 is a great example of the acoustics that I bought this guitar for! There are some cords that when I play I can tell that the modeling is dropping some strings like it can't process all 6 at once. The 12 strings are the worst by far, in the video you can hear some pretty harsh strumming tones as he plays, I have to play mine SUPER light to get 75% of the sound that he is getting in the acoustic models, and my latency is terrible on top of that. My intent is not to bash on this guitar, I love it, or at least I'm trying real hard to keep loving it. And to be fair, most of the NON-Acoustic models seem totally fine to me. I am desperately hoping that someone can give me some pointers on places I can look to get a better sound, something doesn't seem right to me. FYI, my serial number dates my "NEW" JTV-59 as a November 2012 build if that's any clue as well. Thanks!
  21. Hey Folks, Just got my new VDI cable form these guys (pic attached ) I am very impressed! its a ruggedised outer rubber and the cable is rock solid and very flexible. Closest I have got to regular guitar cable. Thought I'd share. cheers.
  22. As above really. HD500x brandnew. Guitar old now. Not really used VDI till I bought HD500X. I have the Line 6 official vdi cable. Seems to cut out when I move a certain way. I have to jiggle the cable to get it to come back on. Got first gig with new band next week and now my sounds are reliant on HD500x but I can't even get through one song at rehearsal. So frustrating. Anyone else had this problem?

  24. I've have a JTV-69 and a HD500 that are both about 2 years old. There seems to be some kind of bug this behavior is only when I'm using the VDI cable (doesn't happen with 1/4"). So often I will do this sequence of events: Turn the volume down on the JTV-69 Press and hold the "Tap" button on the HD-500 to switch to the tuner Turn the volume up on the JTV-69 Tune the guitar Turn the volume down on the jtv-69 Press the "Tap" button on the HD-500 to leave tuner mode bump the strings, make a lot of noise, because for some reason my guitar is up 100% even though the knob is set to 0. turn the tuner slightly back up and down to 0. Now it is actually set to 0 Please note that this happens on patches that have no variax settings configured (I.e. tuning, volume/tone settings, models, etc. and the tuner is set to mute on my HD500 at all times. Can anyone else confirm this is a bug? If so is there away to submit it to L6? It's annoying as crap, because even though I'm aware of this behavior. I get burned by it. I'm usually playing at an event and will be tuning while there is someone speaking, or while something else is going on, and a random guitar noise is pretty annoying for everyone else involved. Thanks!
