Sorry for the clickbait-title but it is true! Never understood why the slots are so restricted and there is no playground-area which could be used to try custom models. https://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/An-area-to-store-unused-presets-within-Workbench-HD/902175-23508 Please give your vote to this idea :)

Hi, Now that my beloved Variax 500 is working again (thank you Line 6!!), I'm looking to connect it to Workbench and adjust some of the guitars and pickups. I no longer have the old USB interface, but i do have a Helix LT. Question - can a legacy item like the Variax use the Helix LT as an interface with the older Workbench (As I don't think the Workbench HD would work with my older guitar) thanks in advance!

I bought a demo Variax Standard from Sweetwater Sound about a month ago and have been impressed with guitar, so I recently purchased a used JTV-69, estimated year 2012. The previous owner claims never to have used the interface hardware/software that came with the guitar. I installed the Workbench software and Line 6 Monkey onto my Mac which is running on OS 10.6.4. The Workbench hardware/software combo claims not to recognize the USB connection; it keeps telling me to plug into a USB port on the computer when it's hooked up. When I look at the interface box, I see a green light and a flashing red light, so at least I know it's getting power from the computer. I worked on this situation for some time with no success. I finally decided that the guitar probably had to be hooked up to the interface, so I tried that. Still no success. I ran out of time to deal with it, so I disconnected everything and put it away for a few days. When I got the guitar out and tried to use it, to my surprise the magnetic pickups were dead! No sound what so ever from the amp. I swapped guitars with the same cable into the same jack of the amp and that worked, so I reconnected the JTV. Still no sound. I switched to the modeling sounds through the 1/4" cable and they worked fine; just no magnetic pickups. Could the attempt to get the Workbench software working have somehow switched off the magnetic pickup output? Am I missing something here? Any ideas/suggestions would be extremely welcome at this point. I am seriously worried about attempting anything with my Standard until I know what's going on with my JTV. Thanks!!

Hi everyone, Newbie here. I just received a brand new Variax Standard today, and I frustratingly can't seem to get it connected in Workbench HD. It just says "Not connected." I am connecting the Variax to my Macbook (running MacOS Sierra) by the VDI (RJ-45 type) cable, plugged into the USB interface, with a fully charged battery and audio jack plugged in. The volume is turned all the way up, tuning set to standard, and the model selection knob disengaged. Line 6 Monkey seems to recognise the Variax is plugged in, and tells me the device firmware and all applications are up to date (screen shot attached). The guitar has been registered. The lights on the USB interface are both solid green (at the USB and Variax in ends), and I have tried a standard Ethernet cable that I know works, in case the VDI cable was faulty, but no go. I have no other USB drives etc. attached. Any help here would be much appreciated

Hi all. I've just got my son a Variax 500 off eBay for his birthday. One of the reasons for getting it was the ability to easily use altered tuning. I didn't realize it needed to be attached to a computer to do this. I understand that there's a little interface that Line 6 make but they are around £100! I could pick up a used Pod XT live for less than that. Firstly would a XT live work as an interface between the Variax 500 and a computer. Secondly can I still get a version of Workbench that will work and lastly can I get the required cables? Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance.

This summer i baught a variax guitar (variax standard). I love the accoustic presets and have a lot of fun messing about in my homestudio, but lately ive seen tons of vids on youtube etc.. where people use the workbench to sorta make new guitars, tweaqes etc.. And i would LOVE to try that. Once i got the guitar i installed both the workbench and the linemonkey, but havnt tried any of them until today, and i cant get it to work :( So i was hoping someone could tell me what im doing wrong.. My set up is: The guitar is plugged into my "focusrite solo" with a standard electric guitar cable, the focusrite is plugged into my computer via USB. I have the guitar "on" with the lights glowing on model and tuning and fully charged battery. *I doubleclick the variax workbench symbol on my desktop and get a grey thingy that pops up and says "MIDI port error, the midi port you have selected could not be opened"- I dont think i have selected a midi port, but maybe my settings elsewhere is wrong, in my DAW i use the "Focusrite ASIO" (simply because it works well on my guitars, mics and even my midi-keyboard so maybe that is something? I then click "configure" and up comes a handful of drawings of guitars with an "X" and next to it it says " Microsoft GS wavetable synth" on OUT and "No device detected" next to the ones that doesnt say "variax". I have also downloaded and installed the USB driver called "Variax USB Interface Driver v1.0.7.2 Installer.exe". But things remain the same..Am i missing something? I had hoped it would pop right up after my guitar was plugged in and turned on.. Thanks in advance RobertAllan

I know - there were some threads dealing with that. But I would like to talk this up again in a more moderate way :P I am still owner of the 'old' dreamrig: JTV (Variax) --> POD HD (500) --> DT amp. POD HD is connected to computer via USB. This signal chain and workflow is really amazing! I can edit edit every part of the chain via PC and hear the 'final result' at once without regulary interrupting (annoying plugging / unplugging) the signal flow (no USB interface needed for editing Variax models). So, please  (guess what...) I know, it's on the Helix checking off list (as DI called it). To me, it'll be a wonderful christmas present - so this is on my 'Helix wish list' this year!

I have an "open box" JTV-69 on the way, but it doesn't include the USB interface. Does anyone know if this version work with it? http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Workbench

I'm curious about the various techniques people use to create custom guitars using workbench HD. Is there any kind of tutorial anywhere online, where people explain how the created a Texas Special Stratocaster, or a Paul Reed Smith, or a Fender Mustang? (Just three random examples) I'm interested in trying to build a Kurt Cobain Signature Jaguar, which has a PAF in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge. The best plan I have is to listen to clean sound samples of the guitar, and keep playing around randomly with workbench until my Variax sounds the same as the sound sample. Anybody else recommend a better technique, or recommend a starting spot? I was thinking of putting 89 pickups in the bridge and maybe a les Paul neck humbucker in the neck. Not sure what body.

In the November issue of Premier Guitar there is an article about Tone and Volume Pots and Capacitors and the effects of modifying them; essential information for anybody wanting to get into tweaking their Variax using Workbench: http://digital.premierguitar.com/premier-guitar-november-2015/0957504001444836288/p135

I have a HD500x. Just brought home a Variax Acoustic 700 Natural. It appears you cannot use workbench with this combination. Workbench version 1.75 - No support for HD500X It doesn't look like anyone cares about fixing this because they've brought out the wonderful: Workbench HD - No Support for Variax Acoustic Am I missing something or is this combo just not gonna work. It seems Workbench 1.75 came out 3 years ago so I'm guessing it's safe to assume there's no upgrade in the works. Seems a waste...love Line 6 but can't keep up with buying the very latest of each piece of gear just to be sure they're compatible. Fortunately haven't had to pay for this Variax Acoustic yet and not likely I will keep it as I haven't really managed to find the right sound yet and was really hoping the workbench might help me with that.

Might seem like a simple question, but I can't find the answer. I've seen Workbench HD software on sale at Sweetwater for $100, but I was also able to download it for free from the Line 6 site. I don't have a Variax guitar to test it with so I don't know if it needs a license to actually work. I'm looking at buying a Variax guitar and one that I am looking at is a used JTV from GuitarCenter. If I need to also buy the software that (presumably) is free when you buy a new Variax, I need to figure that into the price. I tried searching but didn't find any clear answers. Thanks.

Hey guys, New member here from Canada. Not sure if this is the right place to post this but a few days ago I bought a used Variax JTV-69 but the guitar did not come with the USB workbench interface. No big deal I thought to myself as I assumed the interface would be around the 20$ mark. Called today a Canadian Line6 dealer and the Workbench interface is a lot more :( This is to much money for me as funds are currently a bit tight and I want to edit the parameters on my Variax JTV but I can't :/ I don't have any POD either... I was wondering if there is a forum member who already uses his Variax through his POD willing to donate or sell his (now unused) Workbench interface on a fair price. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am running a JTV-59 through a Yamaha THR 10C into an iMac via USB or just jamming with headphones plugged into the THR. The magnetic pickups sound great with the amp sims built into the THR. In fact, I'd say the tube amp sims in the THR are some of the best hardware or software (external device or computer plugins) I have come across so far. Granted, I don't have an Ax FX or Kemper Profiler. But when I switch over to the Variax models with the same amp sims (both THR and Guitar Rig), it just doesn't sound that great. The mags sound much better. Then I finally got around to turning the THR to the "FLAT" setting where no amp sim is applied to the signal. I only had a light hall reverb on. When I started going through the models I was blown away! Especially by the SEMI, JAZZBOX, and ROCKABILLY models. To me they sound so much better without an amp sim coloring their sound, even when the amp sim is set to low-gain, clean tones. The sound is more expressive and sounds less "gimmicky". I am starting to have more respect for what Line 6 has accomplished here. I am not disappointed at all because I really like to play with very clean tones, and no distortion. I know this probably has a lot to do with the preference of my ears. I'm just very puzzled why there would be such a difference between mags and Variax models when using amp sims. Do we get better results using simulated instrument and real amp, or amp sim and real mags, but things start to break down with simulated guitar AND simulated amp?

I've had a JTV59 for about 3 months, and I noticed that almost all the models have very quiet E, A, and D strings, while the G, B, and E are much louder. The B is the loudest, but that is typical of many guitars I've played. The problem is my higher treble notes drown out the deeper bass notes. Is this due to variations in the piezo pickup sensitivity in the bridge? The magnetic humbuckers don't suffer from this problem. This is what I've tried to correct the problem, and it helps a lot. In Workbench, I went through the models one by one and picked each string from low E to high E, listening for which strings were louder and by how much. Then I turn the individual string volume of loud strings down to between 60 and 80, depending on what sounds good with each model. Lastly, I raise the overall model volume by 2 to 5 db, to bring all the strings up to a good volume. The E, A, D strings still sound less expressive, less detail in the tone, but at least the volume is not completely drowned out by the treble strings. If the problem is the piezo, I imagine a replacement is expensive. I also noticed that raising the the overall db level on the Spank models actually helped them sound better, to me at least.

Just wondering if anyone might know, even though the Variaxes all come with the Workbench interface now, will the Firehawk act as a Workbench interface like the Pods do?

Hi, I'm having trouble getting Worckbench to see the JT59. The PC sees the usb interface which has one green light and one flashing red light. The JT59 data cable is plugged in and the there is a jack lead plugged into the guitar. The battery is fully charged, the drivers and firmware are upto date ( according to Monkey which also sees the Usb interface. The guitar is turned on. No amount of rescanning helps. What have I missed? Sifi

I have seen this issue reported in other threads, and I have just experienced this problem with Workbench and my Variax 700. I was simply trying to create a new version of one of the Lester models in a drop-D tuning. At first, when I changed the tuning on the low E string to D, I couldn't hear any result. Ah, I realized -- you have to click the Enable button above the tuning chart. That changed the pitch of the low E, but it also introduced a VERY noticeable distortion (like a "bark" at the beginning of the sound) into the A-string -- only the A string, and only when I hit it a little harder than usual with the pick. Note that this distortion only occurs when the "Enable" button is lit up -- if I click again to disable the alternate tuning feature, the A-string distortion goes away, regardless of how hard I hit the string with my pick. The distortion is clearly tied to the "Enable Alternate Tunings" feature. Has anyone figured out how to solve this problem??

Hey, So bought a new Line 6 Variax 700. Love the tones. But when i connected it to my workbench i've had a strange problem. First let me explain how i connected it. Variax 700 electric to my pod xt live using a rj45 cable. Then, via usb to the computer. I have updated all my firmwares and software. Now, heres the strange thing. My guitar is detected via the pod xt live perfectly, but when i try to change a tuning the fret board works upside down. Eg. When i drop my lowest (6th string) To a D in order to make it a drop D tuning, it changes my highest string (The high E or 1st string) to a D. While the easy and obviously way to get over this is just find out how many frets to drop each string by. There is another issue. When i drop my highest string in the software (which is my lowest string in real life) The note doesnt transpose properly. I.e. it misses the note and buzzes and stuff like that. What is the problem. I'm pretty sure that if i fix my fretboard being upside down in the software, it'll fix the problem. P.S. I've reinstalled the firmwares and drives and tried the same thing on my laptop as well as desktop. PLEASE HELP! :( :( Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone, Short story: I've got a "not working" Variax 600 from a friend to try to fix it. The problem is that the guitar is not able to save any patch. Long story: My friend got the guitar 2nd hand from a local store. It played fine for a few months and started malfunction (low volume in some strings, no sound sometimes and so on..) He took the guitar to a repair center pointed by Line6 and after 7 months they returned him the guitar saying it was Ok. It played for a few weeks and stop making sound again. One month ago he gave me the guitar to try to fix it and when I opened it I found the battery cables squeezed between the metal cage and the guitar body and one of them was broken. After changing the broken cable the guitar started to work again. Then, when I tried to change patches and save them the guitar stopped making sound and was hung until I re-powered it again. What I tried so far: - Edit and Save patches, I tried 2 methods: - Variax USB Interface The guitar will connect, sync, and I can edit any patch and hear the sound changing (connected via P10 to Amp) When sending the modifications back to the guitar (to save it), workbench hangs and the guitar no longer plays any sound in the amp. - Using the method described in the user guide, where you select the patch to be copied, hold the model knob down, rotate it to the target and releases it. Both ways, the guitar stops playing any sound in the amp, and I need to turn it off and on again to get the sound back. - Check with the oscilloscope if the Write Enable pin on the flash memory was being driven by the processor, and it was only driven when the guitar was not hung. - I also checked with the oscilloscope other pins (data, clock, power and piezos) and everything seems to be working. - Yesterday, I carefully removed the flash memory IC and soldered a new one. I was hoping that the flash memory had only data (no code) and so I would be able to write that data back through the MIDI channel (the same that is used by WB to change patches). With this new blank flash memory, the WB does not find the guitar through Variax USB interface. Questions: - Does anyone from Line6 can help me recover this guitar? - Does anyone have a raw dump from the flash memory? if so I can write it to a new one and solder it! (I still have the original flash, but who knows if I will be able to read "good" data from it) - I also want to try to force an update through the MIDI channel. To do so I need someone with a working guitar to get a log from the WB. Anyone can help me getting the log file? If you need any more details, please ask! Sorry for the long post. Thanks, Mikhail

There has got to be a better way to plug in my HD500 and JTV 89 and edit. Yesterday I was in the studio and had some clicking issues when changing patches and I also wanted to write a DADGAD patch for my JTV. So when I got home... I started Monkey and had to update several things. I forget exactly what I needed to update, but it took a while. Then I needed to open Workbench. So I opened the program and realized that it doesn't work with JTV, (but I need to keep it because I still have a Variax 500.) So I opened Workbench HD. I can't find the JTV Interface and cords. I search for about fifteen minutes and it is where I looked the first time! Oh yeah, I have to have a 1/4 cord plugged in to the guitar jack. Oh no, my battery is dead. I have to charge it overnight... Today, battery charged and ready to go. Everything is plugged in. I open Workbench. It seems to be working so I do some edits and I get a message saying it can't send the preset to the guitar... I go to Line 6 Support and do a search for the exact words of the error message and nothing comes up. I do another search and I'm searching within my current results, so I back out and try it again in the forum, in the knowledge base... Nothing. Am I the only one having this problem? So I try the "Error Code." No luck. I put my problem in my own words and finally get a result that seems to apply that isn't in Japanese or German. The guys ultimate solution was sending his guitar back and getting a new one!? Somewhere in the responses someone mentions a JTV firmware update. I go back to Monkey to see if I have the most current firmware for the guitar. Now the interface is only showing one green light and one red light. I unplug. I plug. I remove the battery. I put the battery back. Somehow I get Monkey to find the guitar. But in the process I realize that I'm now installing the midi interface, which I don't need, and it is telling me I'll need to reboot the computer to complete the installation. Rebooted and read to check Monkey! I have 2.0, I need 2.1. Now Monkey isn't recognizing my guitar again. I unplug. I plug. I remove the battery. I put the battery back. Two green lights! I update the guitar! I go to Workbench HD and it works! ...Almost 24 hours later. "Elegant and user friendly, this is not," said Yoda. I don't even remember why I wanted the DADGAD patch and I'm too frustrated to play even if I could remember. Then end result is fine. I'm a big Line 6 fan. Nice guitar, great versatility, but there has to be a better way to integrate all these updates. I'll bet you Line 6 guys know I'm right and you probably wish it was better as well. I'll bet you'd have a lot more customers. $$$

Mags And Models Blended Problem
radatats posted a topic in James Tyler Variax Guitars / Workbench HD
With the great new firmware I have finally had a chance to play around with Workbench while connected to HD Edit and the JTV/POD/DT rig. Really happy with what can be done now. Finally realized what many had been saying about adjusting string volumes and it really helps to bring out string definition during play. However,I tried using the blending feature at the bottom left of Workbench and a strange problem has come up. No matter what model or mag combination I try, if I blend the mags in say to 50%, my D string sounds like it is actually a different model to the rest. For instance with Lester 1 and HB pup on my 69 - Play a scale up from the bottom E and it sounds fine on E and A, rich, warm, but as soon as I hit the D string it sounds like a Strat/single coil. G,B,E all back to the Lester/HB tone. Turn off the mags, it sounds Lester all the way up, turn off the models it sounds Lester all the way up, blend them together and D string quacks. Similar stiuation with other models and pup combinations too. it's not a big deal really, I don't plan on making use of this blending feature other than goofing off, but I would like to know if anyone else experiences anything similar. Other than that I am very happy with this latest update, I almost feel like I have a new guitar in my hands, it sounds that much better to me. The whole package has suddenly come to life. -
I own Variax Acoustic, JTV59, and just acquired a Variax Bass from eBay. The Variax Acoustic and JTV59 can connect to Line 6 Monkey via my POD HD500. I have also used the USB interface to connect the JTV59, and if I recall correctly, it is required for Workbench HD. The Variax Bass is not detected by Line 6 Monkey via the POD HD500 or the USB interface that came with the JTV59. Is there an interface to update the Variax Bass (and connect to either version of Workbench), or was the bass discontinued before the online connections were implemented? Don't want to keep chasing my tail if there is no way to connect the bass to my Mac ;-) (btw, sorry if this has already been covered; appears that there have not been any Variax Bass topics since ~2007.)
