Hi guys, Digital gadgetry has a bad day? Does anyone know of an issue regarding connectivity between Variax 300/600 and workbench using Pod HD500, and Windows Vista? I have no issues with connecting to Monkey, or HD Edit, via the same connection. So here's the story... I successfully reflashed the firmware using Monkey in my 300/600 vaxplant, as I was having a strange warbling issue all of a sudden on the open 6th E, and fretted F. So after reflashing, I go back into Workbench to reload all my user patches from a backup, and it won't connect. I used monkey to download Workbench again, used the Line 6 uninstaller to uninstall Workbench, then re-installed it. Still no banana. Doesn't even recognise 300/600 as being connected. Disconnect everything, reconnect, still no banana. I connected to my MacBook Pro, and everything connected fine, reloaded patches fine. So I had a workaround, but I still want to have connectivity, as my computer workspace is where I usually do it all.

Hi everyone, Newbie here. I just received a brand new Variax Standard today, and I frustratingly can't seem to get it connected in Workbench HD. It just says "Not connected." I am connecting the Variax to my Macbook (running MacOS Sierra) by the VDI (RJ-45 type) cable, plugged into the USB interface, with a fully charged battery and audio jack plugged in. The volume is turned all the way up, tuning set to standard, and the model selection knob disengaged. Line 6 Monkey seems to recognise the Variax is plugged in, and tells me the device firmware and all applications are up to date (screen shot attached). The guitar has been registered. The lights on the USB interface are both solid green (at the USB and Variax in ends), and I have tried a standard Ethernet cable that I know works, in case the VDI cable was faulty, but no go. I have no other USB drives etc. attached. Any help here would be much appreciated

Hi I bought a Line 6 Variax Standard about a year ago, I have got a 2011 Macbook Pro running OSX 10.7.5 and yet I cannot get the guitar to talk with either Monkey or Workbench. Each time it gets to the update section in Monkey it freezes then crashes. Any ideas? One side of the USB interface is green, but the side where the guitar plugs in has a red light. Hi everyone! I'm new to the forum and joined just after buying a jtv-69 used. It came with a battery and a charger, but no digital interface in the case. So my question is: what exactly is needed in order to connect it to my macbook and eventually to workbench hd? will a regular ethernet cable work? do I have to use the line6 cable? even on that cable, it's written that it's meant for digital connection to a PodXT and the like - so I'm not sure that this is meant to be used to connect the guitar to a computer. Maybe it's mentioned somewhere but I honestly could not find the complete info. is the "DVI" the cable itself? or some kind of a converter/adapter? assuming I have the line6 cable, does it connect to a usb or the ethernet port? how does this chain look exactly? If you could help a newbie I would be very grateful!

Hello I'm thinking about and buying a Variax Standard at my local music store but the seller tells me that the software is not include. Can you download the software (Workbench)? Does it work?

Hello all I'm sure this has been asked before but I can't seem to find anything. I just managed to get hold of a 15 year old Variax Acoustic 700 and its in incredible condition. Very lucky find in my local cash converters! I have a Pod XT Live and Workbench 1.75. All connect and runs perfectly. I have made a few custom tunings but I'm struggling to understand something. What i want to do is select say Jumbo and have say Eb tuning available on that, but what i want is when the selector turns red into the alternate tunings, to turn it and have say drop D. I can do that but then it also changes the sound to that model too. So it changes to Dread. Apart from over writing the Dread (or lets say Nylon which I'l never use anyway), is there a way of doing what I'm after or do you also have to reprogram each bank for the sound and that tuning, meaning you lose that guitar model? There are probably 3 or 4 sounds I would use with all the same 4 or 5 alternate tunings to hand for each sound.

Sorry for the clickbait-title but it is true! Never understood why the slots are so restricted and there is no playground-area which could be used to try custom models. https://line6.ideascale.com/a/dtd/An-area-to-store-unused-presets-within-Workbench-HD/902175-23508 Please give your vote to this idea :)

Hi, Now that my beloved Variax 500 is working again (thank you Line 6!!), I'm looking to connect it to Workbench and adjust some of the guitars and pickups. I no longer have the old USB interface, but i do have a Helix LT. Question - can a legacy item like the Variax use the Helix LT as an interface with the older Workbench (As I don't think the Workbench HD would work with my older guitar) thanks in advance!

I bought a demo Variax Standard from Sweetwater Sound about a month ago and have been impressed with guitar, so I recently purchased a used JTV-69, estimated year 2012. The previous owner claims never to have used the interface hardware/software that came with the guitar. I installed the Workbench software and Line 6 Monkey onto my Mac which is running on OS 10.6.4. The Workbench hardware/software combo claims not to recognize the USB connection; it keeps telling me to plug into a USB port on the computer when it's hooked up. When I look at the interface box, I see a green light and a flashing red light, so at least I know it's getting power from the computer. I worked on this situation for some time with no success. I finally decided that the guitar probably had to be hooked up to the interface, so I tried that. Still no success. I ran out of time to deal with it, so I disconnected everything and put it away for a few days. When I got the guitar out and tried to use it, to my surprise the magnetic pickups were dead! No sound what so ever from the amp. I swapped guitars with the same cable into the same jack of the amp and that worked, so I reconnected the JTV. Still no sound. I switched to the modeling sounds through the 1/4" cable and they worked fine; just no magnetic pickups. Could the attempt to get the Workbench software working have somehow switched off the magnetic pickup output? Am I missing something here? Any ideas/suggestions would be extremely welcome at this point. I am seriously worried about attempting anything with my Standard until I know what's going on with my JTV. Thanks!!

I've downloaded the spank 2 preset from a message in this forum (thanks, Derek32999!), and I see the 89 high-gain guitars have been posted for 59 and 69 users. Is anyone hosting a place for Workbench HD files while we wait for Customtone to feature a Variax section?

Hi all. I've just got my son a Variax 500 off eBay for his birthday. One of the reasons for getting it was the ability to easily use altered tuning. I didn't realize it needed to be attached to a computer to do this. I understand that there's a little interface that Line 6 make but they are around £100! I could pick up a used Pod XT live for less than that. Firstly would a XT live work as an interface between the Variax 500 and a computer. Secondly can I still get a version of Workbench that will work and lastly can I get the required cables? Sorry for all the questions and thanks in advance.

This summer i baught a variax guitar (variax standard). I love the accoustic presets and have a lot of fun messing about in my homestudio, but lately ive seen tons of vids on youtube etc.. where people use the workbench to sorta make new guitars, tweaqes etc.. And i would LOVE to try that. Once i got the guitar i installed both the workbench and the linemonkey, but havnt tried any of them until today, and i cant get it to work :( So i was hoping someone could tell me what im doing wrong.. My set up is: The guitar is plugged into my "focusrite solo" with a standard electric guitar cable, the focusrite is plugged into my computer via USB. I have the guitar "on" with the lights glowing on model and tuning and fully charged battery. *I doubleclick the variax workbench symbol on my desktop and get a grey thingy that pops up and says "MIDI port error, the midi port you have selected could not be opened"- I dont think i have selected a midi port, but maybe my settings elsewhere is wrong, in my DAW i use the "Focusrite ASIO" (simply because it works well on my guitars, mics and even my midi-keyboard so maybe that is something? I then click "configure" and up comes a handful of drawings of guitars with an "X" and next to it it says " Microsoft GS wavetable synth" on OUT and "No device detected" next to the ones that doesnt say "variax". I have also downloaded and installed the USB driver called "Variax USB Interface Driver v1.0.7.2 Installer.exe". But things remain the same..Am i missing something? I had hoped it would pop right up after my guitar was plugged in and turned on.. Thanks in advance RobertAllan

I know - there were some threads dealing with that. But I would like to talk this up again in a more moderate way :P I am still owner of the 'old' dreamrig: JTV (Variax) --> POD HD (500) --> DT amp. POD HD is connected to computer via USB. This signal chain and workflow is really amazing! I can edit edit every part of the chain via PC and hear the 'final result' at once without regulary interrupting (annoying plugging / unplugging) the signal flow (no USB interface needed for editing Variax models). So, please  (guess what...) I know, it's on the Helix checking off list (as DI called it). To me, it'll be a wonderful christmas present - so this is on my 'Helix wish list' this year!

On the parallel pitch tab does it only allow for +12 or 0? I noticed in the manual it says that it defaults to +12 kind of implying, in my mind, that you could use other values. But that doesn't seem to be the case when I try it with Workbench. What I was trying to do was figure out a way to emulate a Micro Pog with 1 octave up, 1 octave down, and regular pitch. I had in mind that I could use alt tuning to drop an octave, parallel pitch to go up 2 octaves (+24), and blend in the magnetic pickups for standard tuning. I figured it was a long shot, but worth a try. I haven't actually messed with this via the guitar, I just had the idea while I was at work and loaded up the software to see if it was theoretically possible. Any ideas on how this could be done?

I have an "open box" JTV-69 on the way, but it doesn't include the USB interface. Does anyone know if this version work with it? http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Workbench

Might seem like a simple question, but I can't find the answer. I've seen Workbench HD software on sale at Sweetwater for $100, but I was also able to download it for free from the Line 6 site. I don't have a Variax guitar to test it with so I don't know if it needs a license to actually work. I'm looking at buying a Variax guitar and one that I am looking at is a used JTV from GuitarCenter. If I need to also buy the software that (presumably) is free when you buy a new Variax, I need to figure that into the price. I tried searching but didn't find any clear answers. Thanks.

In the November issue of Premier Guitar there is an article about Tone and Volume Pots and Capacitors and the effects of modifying them; essential information for anybody wanting to get into tweaking their Variax using Workbench: http://digital.premierguitar.com/premier-guitar-november-2015/0957504001444836288/p135

Does anyone else think that the Variax edit workbench takes too long to initialize and update? It takes forever to initialize and update here. I have an 8core CPU that is lightning fast. The workbench acts as if it is being strangled. I have reinstalled it twice and still no joy. I have the dream rig and I am using the HD500 for the interface. I am also using the JTV59 Thoughts?

I have a HD500x. Just brought home a Variax Acoustic 700 Natural. It appears you cannot use workbench with this combination. Workbench version 1.75 - No support for HD500X It doesn't look like anyone cares about fixing this because they've brought out the wonderful: Workbench HD - No Support for Variax Acoustic Am I missing something or is this combo just not gonna work. It seems Workbench 1.75 came out 3 years ago so I'm guessing it's safe to assume there's no upgrade in the works. Seems a waste...love Line 6 but can't keep up with buying the very latest of each piece of gear just to be sure they're compatible. Fortunately haven't had to pay for this Variax Acoustic yet and not likely I will keep it as I haven't really managed to find the right sound yet and was really hoping the workbench might help me with that.

Hey guys, New member here from Canada. Not sure if this is the right place to post this but a few days ago I bought a used Variax JTV-69 but the guitar did not come with the USB workbench interface. No big deal I thought to myself as I assumed the interface would be around the 20$ mark. Called today a Canadian Line6 dealer and the Workbench interface is a lot more :( This is to much money for me as funds are currently a bit tight and I want to edit the parameters on my Variax JTV but I can't :/ I don't have any POD either... I was wondering if there is a forum member who already uses his Variax through his POD willing to donate or sell his (now unused) Workbench interface on a fair price. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I am running a JTV-59 through a Yamaha THR 10C into an iMac via USB or just jamming with headphones plugged into the THR. The magnetic pickups sound great with the amp sims built into the THR. In fact, I'd say the tube amp sims in the THR are some of the best hardware or software (external device or computer plugins) I have come across so far. Granted, I don't have an Ax FX or Kemper Profiler. But when I switch over to the Variax models with the same amp sims (both THR and Guitar Rig), it just doesn't sound that great. The mags sound much better. Then I finally got around to turning the THR to the "FLAT" setting where no amp sim is applied to the signal. I only had a light hall reverb on. When I started going through the models I was blown away! Especially by the SEMI, JAZZBOX, and ROCKABILLY models. To me they sound so much better without an amp sim coloring their sound, even when the amp sim is set to low-gain, clean tones. The sound is more expressive and sounds less "gimmicky". I am starting to have more respect for what Line 6 has accomplished here. I am not disappointed at all because I really like to play with very clean tones, and no distortion. I know this probably has a lot to do with the preference of my ears. I'm just very puzzled why there would be such a difference between mags and Variax models when using amp sims. Do we get better results using simulated instrument and real amp, or amp sim and real mags, but things start to break down with simulated guitar AND simulated amp?

I've had a JTV59 for about 3 months, and I noticed that almost all the models have very quiet E, A, and D strings, while the G, B, and E are much louder. The B is the loudest, but that is typical of many guitars I've played. The problem is my higher treble notes drown out the deeper bass notes. Is this due to variations in the piezo pickup sensitivity in the bridge? The magnetic humbuckers don't suffer from this problem. This is what I've tried to correct the problem, and it helps a lot. In Workbench, I went through the models one by one and picked each string from low E to high E, listening for which strings were louder and by how much. Then I turn the individual string volume of loud strings down to between 60 and 80, depending on what sounds good with each model. Lastly, I raise the overall model volume by 2 to 5 db, to bring all the strings up to a good volume. The E, A, D strings still sound less expressive, less detail in the tone, but at least the volume is not completely drowned out by the treble strings. If the problem is the piezo, I imagine a replacement is expensive. I also noticed that raising the the overall db level on the Spank models actually helped them sound better, to me at least.

Just wondering if anyone might know, even though the Variaxes all come with the Workbench interface now, will the Firehawk act as a Workbench interface like the Pods do?
