I have been looking for the right tone for Jerry Cantrell, I prefer the tone he has now, on the last two albums although I do love the Bogners! I was on the Spider App, looking in the cloud for a really good one but I cant find one that's worth saving or even tweaking...Anyone have any suggestions? I cant afford the Friedman so I figured this was the best bet. I am in an AIC tribute, been playing in it for 8 years, but im constantly chasing the tone...I use G&L's as well...Any advice or help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Hey guys.. Just curious to know if anyone is running their Helix in 4CM with their Friedman BE100 or modded Marshall in 4CM? Why do I ask? Well, the plan is to keep the settings ‘neutral’ on the amp, however, I’m going to use the Helix to add an OD/tubescreamer pedal here and there (depending on the patch) to give it more bite/cut/top end etc. But, the real question is, has anyone put an EQ somewhere within the signal chain to remove some of the mids to make it a bit ‘angrier’ or a bit more ‘metal’ so to speak? I don’t want to completely scoop the mids, just enough for there to be some differentiation in sound and tone. Granted, the amp has the C45 and SAT switches but they cannot be activated by the Helix, you physically need to do this at the rear of the amp. The amp is incredibly versatile – we know this, but I guess it’s just a matter of whether this can be done, and if so, how.. I presume it’s an EQ block that would do the trick somewhat.. I’ve seen a few posts here and on the Fractal Forum.. So here’s my 2c worth on the Friedman ASM-12, having owned two myself. Loved them. Bought them purely because they were/are the closest thing to what a real cab sounds like, which was important to me. Yes, it’s FRFR and does the FRFR thing quite well, BUT, it does the ‘real sounding cab thing’ better than any other FRFR solution - this was what got me over the line. It was a no-brainer to buy. I used to own the Atomic CLR wedge and strongly disliked it. Too artificial sounding, didn’t sound anything like what I thought a mic’d up cab should sound like. Normal music sounded good through it, but playing your guitar through it didn’t cut it, not even close. I also owned 3 different active Alto speakers (a couple old Alto Elvis 10’ & 12’ which were actually quite good for a budget speaker). Might be a good time to just acknowledge that this is obviously very subjective; what sounded good to me may not sound good to you etc etc and vice versa. Having owned two Friedman BE100, Bogner XTC, 3 different H&K amps, EVH 5153, ENGL Steve Morse and Powerball etc (some decent amps I might add..), I had a pretty good idea what my ears would naturally gravitate towards tone-wise and cab-wise. I’ve only ever played 4x12 & 2x12s that were V30 loaded or combo V30+Creamback, if that helps. So, after years of playing these amps through these cabs, my ears have memory of the tone (if that makes any sense) and I knew what I would naturally like, or expect to hear. Back to the ASM.. It’s bulky and a little bit awkward to carry, but it’s worth the awkwardness given the sound that you get is precise but not over the top. It’s the only FRFR speaker that sounds very close to a real cab and pushes the air – which is what real cabs do, right!?! You can have it in the wedge position or the upright position. I kept it in the upright position 95% of the time. It could keep up with my other guitarists 100W JCM900 and delivered a good mid punch which I think A LOT of FRFR solutions really lack. Again, YMMV. Lastly, because I’m quite OCD, I had a couple custom covers made up for them because the shiny outer material looks like it can damage/scratch quite easily. Credit to Dave Friedman, the man makes some killer amps and some killer products in general, really. If I was to revisit the FRFR path, I’d get an ASM. Why did I get rid of them?!? Simply, I don’t play FRFR anymore – I’ve gone full circle and use my Helix to drive my amp which is my ‘A’ rig, and I use my Axe FX-ii with a valve power amp (VHT), which is my ‘B’ rig, into a Mesa vertical 2x12 cab.. actually, I use my two 2x12 vertical Mesa cabs! Awesome sound. Anyway, for what it’ worth I hope this helps. If anyone wants the specs for these custom covers that I got made up for it, just send me a PM. Georgy

Hey guys, I used to have the Friedman ASM-12 when I used to have the Axe FX 2, but that is long gone since. I'm about to buy one for my Helix and was curious to get people's thoughts on what they though of it? How does it sit in a band mix? Anyone using it for live shows (big or small gigs - doesn't matter)? Other than it's awkward size and handle positioning, how do you find it overall, tone/sound-wise? Any input is welcomed :) Thanks

Hey guys, Two questions :) using the metalpack and since that time, i don't know how I shall deal with the Peavy. It's a great amp but so much bass is going on there. I use the amp in combination with the XXL-V30 cab. So the result is a aggressive tone with lot of bass. Normally, reducing the "boomy-spot" with a parametric-eq has always work (got it from MeAmBobbo's gudie). Also cutting 700Hz, making some room for drums with cutting 220Hz, 440Hz (graphic eq) works well. You can also use the screamer in front of the amp to clean up the tone but...this time...these eq's (220Hz, 440Hz, 700Hz) will destroy the tone and the parametric-eq works only a little bit. Normally, I try to create rhythm-patches for modern progressive metal (aiming for a distorted tone with mids which have dynamics and you can play also big 6-string chords). Cutting the bass much on the amp makes him a knife. Maybe someone knows to handle that beast or has some good tips? The second question is: Does someone know an amp on the POD HD which tone is similar or less similar to the Friedman BE 100? Try to create some lead-patches (smooth, reverb and without for reverb) to cover some parts of "Intervalls: The Shape of Colour". I thank you in advance :)

Hey guys, I'm about a week away from receiving my Helix floor unit - and I can't wait! Having been a Fractal user for the last 2 years, I've become quite accustomed to how the Axe FXii works, what it's limitations are, and to be fair, just how damn good that thing really is. I guess this is more of a question for the guys who have come across from Fractal to the Helix.. as the title suggests, what pro's/con's have you discovered? Where does one lack where the other one is superior? Any do's and don't's? Amp sim options? I know it's all very personal and preferential, it could be a simple thing that the Fractal FX8 or AX8 do not have an expression pedal built in. Or, the fact the Helix is completely colour whereas the Axe FX looks like, as one of my friends have recently said, a 1986 Casio calculator! Apologies if this question has already been asked! I just purchased the asm-12 frfr to go with the helix. I am working towards making the jump to play live with the helix to frfr to FOH combo. I have always used modelers in the studio only, so I am nervous of this venture away from my traditional amp and pedalboard. I'd like to anticipate any issues ahead of time and be realistic. I play in an original hard rock band and we usually play out with 3-5 other bands on the bill and changeovers are quick. I don't always know what the FOH situation is so this makes me nervous since I've never sent anything other than a mic'ed cab from my rig to PA. Here are my thoughts on what I plan to do. Right now I'm planning on XLR out of helix to XLR input to Friedman then XLR out of the Friedman to FOH (Set to line output). I was initially concerned after reading about controlling my monitoring volume and it affecting FOH but there is a volume control on the Friedman. It's not very convenient in the back of the unit so if there is another way to independently control my volume without affecting FOH then please chime in. My other concerns are EQ. I will have my patches setup and EQ'ed to my liking only to have the house guy tell me it sounds terrible out front. Since I'm giving him an out from the frfr he's getting my EQ. Please educate me since this is new territory for me. If there is another preferred setup then I'm all for suggestions.
