    ReAmping with SPDIF

    Hi! A quick question which has haunted me for the last few days.... So i use my Helix Pedalboard for recording with spfif. Means i connect the cables form my interface (NI Komplete Audio 6) to SPDIF in and out on my Helix. I pan the DI 100% R and my Amp tone 100% L. So i can record amp and DI tone digitally and still use my Interface as my main interface so i can have my monitors connected etc. Now i had some tracks recorded but the tone didnt fit the song so i wanted to Reamp it. I know you can do it easily with USB but as said, i want to have my Komplete audio still as my main Interface. Since i have SPDIF already set up i thought it was as easy as sending my DI track in the DAW (Studio One 4 pro) to SPDIF out and set the input on my helix to SPDIF. But my problem is that the SPDIF out shows signal but nothing comes out of the helix (or in for that matter). I tried a lot of things, for instant i send the DI to SPDIF L and R or and i treid paanning the output on the Helix differently or choosing a completely different output on the helix but.... NOTHING :( Does anyone know how to help me here or is there a video on how to reamp with SPDIF on the helix? I searched on youtube but didnt find anything... Thanks a lot!
  2. Hi, I've got a used Pod XT Pro which is connected to to Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (1Gen) via S/PDIF. The problem is, that I do not know/understand how to setup both devices to get the signal from POD to Scarlett. The Scarlett is configured using MixControl SampleRate 41.1kHz Sync Source S/PDIF Sync Status Locked USB Driver Connected ASIO Buffer Size 6ms The POD XT Pro is setup using I/O & Dig Select Input Guitar Format 41.1kHz 24 Bit Mode Normal Gain +0db Having plugged a guitar in I see the signal led flashing. I also get a signal on the DI Out which I also connected the interface using 1/4inch. In MixControl I can see the level meters receiving signal on the analog input, but not on the S/PDIF ones. When I change the POD to 'Match S/PDIF' in the IO Select, still no signal can be received. When I restart the POD with this setting it gives a message saying: "CANNOT LOCK TO INPUT. WAIT FOR RE-CLOCK OR PRESS ANY BUTTON TO SELECT GUITAR IN AND 44.1kHz 24 BIT OUT." Can anyone help me out here, how to setup this correctly. Many thanks Sebastian

    DI via SPDIF

    Guys, I want to record both DI and processed digitally. But since I can't use my Helix USB driver and my audio interface ASIO driver simultaneously, I go with SPDIf route, Path 1 full with blockss and goes to Left SPDIF, while Path 2 with nothing in it goes to Right SPDIF. Am I doing it right? Will the DI track I get from Right SPDIF good enough for reamping?

    Hi! Trying to set up reamping with AXE-FX II and my toneport UX-8. I found a solution by using spdif, or so I thought. I cannot se spdif as an input on my DAW. I'm using reaper on W10. Very thankful for any input here. Regards Martin

    Helix Latency... What is it really?

    UPDATED AND CORRECTED!!! My apoligies for the incorrect numbers (I read the timescale incorrectly on my Oscope screen) In the original post. I'd like to begin by saying I've been very impressed with my helix so far. I'm really enjoying it, and I am not posting this to bash it in any way whatsoever. But I'm naturally curious, and mostly unhappy with the SPDIF I/O, and wanted to really understand why, which is what prompted this whole experiment. With all the connection possibilities I have been experimenting hooking different pieces of gear I own to the various I/Os, with some great, and some not so great results. One of the biggest questions I've had has been with the digital I/Os. Is it actually faster to use SPDIF? Logic would say yes. No A/D conversion. It has to be faster right? Well I haven't been so happy with Helix in that regard. My 2 notes torpedo Hasn't sounded as good as I think it should through the SPDIF I/O. So I started digging online. What I found was a lot of nonsense. Threads saying that each foot of cable added 1ms of latency (this is wrong by the way) and people claiming that Helix is sub 1ms latency. hmmm Just a few quick numbers, as tested on my Helix floor with an O scope straight thru on a blank preset. Each and every time you convert A/D -> D/A it's 1.8 ms ...Yes that means each loop you engage adds 1.8 ms So to be clear. guitar in + 4 loops (in series) + 1/4" out = 9ms maximum of latency due to A/d conversion 4 cable method should clock in at around 3.6ms (assuming no other effects in circuit) SPIDIF I/O appears to not run as fast as as the standard I/Os 48k runs slightly faster then 44.1k 88k or 96k I tested this by looping spdif send and return to itself. As you add gear latency will increase due to the outboard gear. Other interesting notes about the SPDIF I/O there is no option for sync (internal vs spdif) and it connects to my two notes torpedo and transmits and receives audio even when the two units are set to entirely different sync and sample rate settings. There's also other spdif weirdness but as I said it's not my intent to bash Helix, so I won't go into them here. On the positive side, adding blocks does not appear to slow the unit down much. like less than .2ms for an amp. I haven't thoroughly tested this but a real quick check loading blocks up till I started to run out of DSP and very little change in latency. IR Blocks may have more latency associated with them but that is probably more due to the nature of what an IR actually is rather than processing power My takeaways. Use the internal blocks in helix as much as possible. Minimize A/D conversion. Stereo loops (parallel) are 1.8ms for both Serial loops are 1.8ms each Avoid using SPDIF for live playing (it's fine for re-amping etc) Anyway... I thought I'd share this. Rock On ✌
  6. Are there any current plans to introduce the ability to set the Helix floor processor as a word clock slave? I currently use only the SPDIF connections to attach to an audio interface (and would like to keep it that way), but have to set the interface clock as the slave when recording with the Helix else it won't stay in sync. This means I'm having to constantly change my audio interface's clock when I'm not using the Helix. I believe the rack unit has this capability already, but I far prefer the portability of the floor unit and would rather not switch, if possible.

    HD500x Output options

    Hi Guys, probably another beginner question if you don't mind. :) So far, I have tried the TRS (Amp mode), S/PDIF, and Phones output of my HD500x. They all sound different and I believe I have yet to dial in the best sound from them. Lately, I am inclined to try out the XLR output of my unit. My question now is, is there any significant differences in output between the S/PDIF and the XLR output? I mean, yes, one is analog and the other one is digital, but am I missing out on a significant difference in sound quality? Or am I missing out on a feature of the HD500x if I do not use the XLR output? I plan to send the XLR output to my monitor speakers via RCA input. One more question, if I use the TRS output in line mode, will it be the same sound I would get from the XLR output (minus the XLR and TRS noise cancellation feature)? Thanks in advance guys! Cheers!
  8. Hello and thank you in advance for your help. :) I currently have my POD HD500X connected to my firewire digital interface via SP/DIF, and everything is sounding amazing. I can record to my DAW and everything sounds exactly same as headphones direct from the Pod. What I am Trying to do: I would life to record via SP/DIF, but also use my computer to edit my tones via USB. Problem: when I plug in the USB cable from my computer to the POD HD, the audio from the sp/dif shutoff, when I unplug the USB cable the audio starts working again. I am not sure if this is normal or not. I have have read both that it should work, and should not work. :huh: Is this actually possible? Is there a setting in the computer or POD HD that I should be looking at? Thanks You, Matt B.

    Helix spdif very quiet

    Has anyone had an issue with their spdif volume being way too low? I can't hear 1/4 of the volume from the Helix through my monitors as I do any other track, and that's with the volume blasted all the way up. I plug in the old HD500, and it's plenty loud. Plug in Helix, and It's horribly quiet. Anyone have any ideas? I also have a help desk ticket open because my computer won't recognize Helix as being connected when I try to use the Helix edit app or the Line 6 updater. Thanks for any help! Joe

    SPDIF level

    I know its been talk about, and I also find it very low. Its seems to be at instrument level. It really needs to be at line level. I get about a -24 db signal max. Is this true? the SPDIF was "tapped" at instrument level, figuring because the Helix seems to do all its work at Instrument level then boosted on the output.
  11. Hi, Love my new Helix and just starting to discover it's richness and sound palets. Today I discovered something strange. I went spdif out for the first time, just because I wanted to check if this was working for me, or that I had the famous dropouts. Well no dropouts here for the moment, but strange noises coming out of my beauty! Even when the Helix was shut off ?!? Did a quick research of course where this could coming from.     Question about using the s/pdif out?

    Hey all. So I've got a 6 channel interface. I use all 6 inputs for drums. Would I be able to utilize the S/pdif connections on both my interface and the pod? What input, in logic, would I have to pick in order to record what my Pod is sending through the s/pdif?
  13. I'v bought a new interface (Focusrite Scarlett 18i8) and i'm using this along side my HD Pro X. With my old interface i was able to reamp DI signals by sending via an line out output, however the 18i8 only has 2 of these outputs, which are used by my monitors. I now have to send the signals via SPDIF between the Focusrite and HD Pro X but i can't figure it out. How do i use the SPDIF input and output on the HD Pro X?
  14. Hello everyone, I'm having trobule with S/PDIF on Line 6 UX -2. I'm using windows 7, and cubase 5 and motherboard is Gigabyte GA - MA770-UD3... I connected S/PDIF cable on motherboard and on the UX2. On sound manager I put to Default device (Playback) is "Realtek High Definition Audio" and so in Realtek HD Audio Manager. When I play some music on my PC, the 'vu metar' is showing me to something is playing on Realtek Digital Output, but I can't hear anything on my speakers, when I changed to the default device is "Line 6 UX 2" I can hear music on my speakers... So, can anyone help me about this? Thanks

I am building my home studio and thinking is it a good idea to connect pod hd500x via spdif to UA-55 is there any reason i shouldt not use SPDIF ? Main purpose is to get better sound quality to record guitars...

Hey guys, as many of us use a digital amp like a Pod, AxeFx or Kemper in combination with some wireless system (e.g. a relay...as you read this post ;) ), our signal path is quite full of AD and DA conversions. Therefore I'm thinking of a wireless unit that has digital outputs as well as the good old analog jack. Most of those digital amps have spdif (coax) in- and outputs, hence a spdif-out in the wireless receiver would be nice to have. Are there already plans for such a wireless systems? (Haven't found any topics regarding this with the board search :rolleyes: ) I hope there are some of you, who would like that kind of wireless system as well - if so, raise your voice :) ...the Sennheiser Digital 9000 with its AES-outputs is pricey for a "normal" user :D Greetings Stefan
  17. Hello I have recently purchased a ux2 and Im quite excited to use it, but I've ran into a problem. I bought some Behringer MS16 speakers to monitor the sound, but there is only one SPDIF output, which is used to connect to the other speaker. I have tried to connect straight from the one speaker just to see if it will work, but no sound at all. The input meter from the guitar in pod farm is moving, meaning at least the sound is being registered. I think I need to buy like a rca (Red and white connectors) to spdif cable to connect to the ux2 to get the sound out, but again Im not sure if I'm right. Could anyone confirm this is the type of cable I need to finally get my ux2 up and running, and if not, direct me to the correct type of cable to use? Thanks Liam

    Gain Line-up Measurements

    In order to get a feel for the signal levels suitable for the HD500, I've made a few measurements of the gains available from the different inputs to the various outputs. I've also measured the gain of all the FX. A small Excel spreadsheet containing the data can be found here (unfortunately, I can only upload a PDF version of the data, which I've done here). A brief summary is shown below: All measurements were made at 1kHz with Master Volume = max, S/PDIF gain = 0dB, and Input2 = Variax (although this didn't make any difference because I had Inputs 1 & 2 panned hard Left/Right). Guitar input pad = -5.2dB compared to normal. 1/4" (line) output has 6.1dB more signal than 1/4" (amp). Aux & Guitar (normal) have the same gain structure (except Guitar has programmable input impedance). Guitar (normal) input to 1/4"(amp) output has 4.9dB of loss with no FX, no Amp, and Mixer = 0dB. Compared to 1/4" (amp) output, the XLR output is 9.4dB less while the phone output is 15.4dB more. Compared to the Aux/Guitar(normal) input, Mic (min gain) has 6.2dB less gain while Mic (max gain) has 38dB more gain. Aux/Guitar(normal) input clips at 0dBFS (measured at S/PDIF) with 8.3Vpp Mic (min gain) input clips at -1.1dBFS (measured at S/PDIF) with 14Vpp Mic (max gain) input clips at -1.1dBFS (measured at S/PDIF) with 91mVpp CD/MP3 input clips at various levels near 20Vpp, depending on which output is used (XLR, 1/4", or Phones) By far most of the FX have 0dB of gain, but there are several exceptions (e.g., Graphic EQ = 2.9dB, Tape Echo = -5dB, and others). FX were measured with Mix=0% (to eliminate comb filtering effects) and Gain=0dB (usually). The PDF files contain the whole list. Using some of this data you can see the clip level is essentially set by digital clipping, although the mic input stage only gets you to within 1.1dB of fullscale (close enough to call it fullscale in my opinion). The output stages will not get close to their clip levels (unless you use the CD/MP3 input which bypasses the digital engine). That is, it's sufficient to look at the S/PDIF signal to keep your signal below fullscale. You don't have to worry about clipping the input stages. You also don't have to worry about clipping the analog output stages. I hope you find this useful in optimizing the setup of your equipment. IO Gain.pdf FX Gain.pdf
  19. After seeing the interest expressed in my EQ frequency responses, I decided to take the HD500 back into the lab to measure gain. How much gain is there from the various inputs? How much gain thru the various EQ (my previous post lists some of that)? Perhaps look at gain thru some of the FX? Or maybe I shouldn't look at gain. I am soliciting other ideas to look at while I have it in the lab. Do any of you have any ideas?
