Hd500x?

Recommended Posts

hope it too.

if they cut out all the existing owners from future upgrades in the long run they could hypothetically risk to lose more users than the ones they'll hopefully gain with this new product.

I can see myself in that group but anyway, it's just one in a million

it is now possible to have different output modes simultaneously to apply. For example, you can set the jack outputs for a guitar combo or stack, and simultaneously the XLR outputs via the Studio / Direct mode deployment for use with a PA or recorder. All other functions and features have remained the same.

Hey all, longtime no see/chat/whatevah.  Hope everyone's doing well.

HD500x...hmmm...interesting, yes.  I wonder how much dsp improvement there is, and whether it's possible to max out the dsp with intensive fx, amps, etc.?  Has there been any official comment on this from L6?  Or the beta testers?

Cheers,

F2k

They never bothered changing the footswitch graphics on 2.22 lol. I they won't stop firmware updates for us 500 users & force us to buy another unit with 2x the power & round ring switch lights. It's so easy for em to say, hd500 are maxed out or whatever excuse they might have. I RECOGNIZE they don't owe us anything since they've been supplying firmware updates for years but the fact that there have still been unresolved issues with the crappy EQs etc., hope it leads them to keep including us.

I'm not getting rid of my HD 500. I am not running out of DSP in my patches and I use dual amps and 6, 7 or even all 8 blocks.

I don't think the changes are worth it for me because I got a FRFR rig with two Power Engine 60's. I got 1/4" out to the PE60 for monitor and XLR out to FOH....works great for me

If you need that amp in the room feeling...then the HD500x is for you...eliminates the 4C method I think

Hi Fester! I just got back on here myself. Just couldn't get the 500 to make me happy with many hours of time spent. Sold it and decided to get another X3 Live. I was more happy with that than the 500 so got another one.

Lets see what this unit can do!

"Dynamic DSP with more power for amps and effects"

So how much more power?

I've asked on their FaceBook status but haven't gotten a response. Anyone here know if it was a simple RAM upgrade, or was there other hardware/processing upgrades to integrate with the added DSP? It sounds like it would be synonymous to a computer upgrade from one memory slot to two, or doubling the capacity of the two cards (I have no idea of the hardware architecture of the Pods, BTW). Of course, this is assuming the motherboard and other components are compatible... Personally, I'd be willing to take the Pro apart and swap out some RAM if it meant doubling the DSP.

Actually, it's probably more analogous to upgrading the chipset in a computer - going from an i3 to and i7 or something like that. The DSP portion of it is an upgrade of raw processing power.

Could be. I looked at the situation as the modeling algorithms are already there and implemented into the processor, it is just a function of memory to be able to execute so many instances of whichever algorithm is being called upon; similar to recording in a DAW and the "compressor load" test that they use. Just saw Rain Computers do a compare/contrast test with different machines by loading X amount of compressors and monitoring computer resources. However, I'm no computer hardware jockey. Either way, if it was a processor upgrade or a RAM upgrade, would love to know if the new hardware of the 500x is able to interface with the existing hardware.

I don't think that is possible. According to the new hd500x manual, page 2-7:

"Note that this Mode setting affects the signal fed to several POD HD500X outputs: Balanced, Unbalanced & Phones outputs as well as USB Record Send & L6 LINK audio outputs"

Still the same as current hd500.

Thanks John for the answer...

Thanks Hurghanico for the manual link..

Now Id like to see a detailed comparison chart between the HD500, the Pro, and the X...

Now Id like to see a detailed comparison chart between the HD500, the Pro, and the X...

From whoever was updating the L6 FaceBook page:

Some people might want to upgrade, other folks of course will choose not to. The new POD HD500x has more processing power, tour-grade construction, and new switches and lights for more confident use on stage. It is still a POD HD of course, so when we make updates to the POD HD, all POD HD owners will be able to take advantage of them. And our commitment to customer service doesn't change one bit.

It honestly sounds like they only upgraded hardware and put some LEDs in a beefed up chassis. Fortunately, firmware upgrades will be universal. Again, makes me wonder, did they just swap part bins for a better RAM/processor in their assembly process? Really hoping that's the case.

That and i believe the ability to have a different feed from the 1/4"s and the xlr's to do amps and FOH... or so is my understanding as i've not actually used one.

The ability to send to a stage amp without mic or cab simulation on while sending to the PA with mic and cab simulation on, at the same time, would be a definite upgrade...

I'll chime in.  I see NOTHING changed other than the chip, chasis, footswitches, and LCD screen, maybe RAM.  This seems aimed at the touring pro (at risk of scorning Pod HD Pro owners) who have shelled out for what seems like a now inferior product.

It's definitely about computing power.  More RAM only improves performance when you need to cache data to a disk or flash memory.  Maybe the chip itself has more cache, which is faster than off-chip memory, but I think it's clear we're looking at more raw processing power.  I doubt that the HD's algorithms are so large it has to ditch the ones that aren't processing and keep reloading them from flash.

I can attest that the HD500 footswitches are sub-par, and the upgrade is probably good.  Heard way too many stories ab footswitches not working.  One of mine occasionally gives me grief and I don't even tour with it.  Don't use it live, so I can't say if the LCD is an issue or not.  Can't hurt to improve contrast...

The raw power is welcome but the overall architecture is still bogged down.  Why not add more effects blocks?  Dual output?  IR loading?

WHAT THE ____ ARE THE DEVELOPERS IN THIS COMPANY DOING?!?!?!?!

And the best question.  Why in the ____ do the demo pics of the unit show NINE, YES NINE, effects in the chain.  It's a BS photoshop mockup, not a picture of the actual device, which supports a maximum of 8 effects.  Stinks of false advertising.

The only thing I'd use this for is to use the additional power to fit reverb in patches I otherwise couldn't, or an extra effect or two.  I have lots of patches like that.  But unless I can hock my HD 500 and get a 500X, spending less than $100 on the turnover, it's not worth it to me.  And there's a snowball shot in hell of that happening.

I'll be waiting for the next gen to come around.  I'm hoping Digitech or a dark horse will put out an amazing product, and maybe a new Kemper generation isn't too far away and used gen 1's aren't much more than $1000.

Are you talking about this picture? Looks like 8 effect blocks to me... Are you sure you weren't counting the looper.

I actually wish they did have more effects blocks, too. Perhaps that's something that can be added now that there's more processing power.

Anyone know if I'd be able to load my patches from my POD HD 500 into the HD 500X?  I'd like to have a back up rig.  I'd get the X and use my old unit as a backup if I can load it straight but otherwise I'll probably pick up a used HD500 as a backup.  I use it live straight to the board and it works fine like that but always pays to have a backup, and I spent way too much time programming to start from scratch.  i have a separate patch for each song we do.

Ah, was hoping they would at least make the looper functionally equivalent to the 20 year old DL4 or M series- you still can't control the volume of it with the exp pedal (according to the posted manual). I guess the good news is that it saved me from taking the hit on upgrading. Maybe one day they will add this to the 500 or X.

They just upgraded the unit, improving some physical issues for new buyers.

Why not, I don't think they expect people who already own one to buy a new one... People that felt limited by the DSP limit might be interested but probably not a lot of people.

What surprises me is that there is still no power switch :). This was an issue we heard everywhere when the HD500 was released !

GuitarGuitar have them in stock. I'd've been able to wander into their Newcastle store on my lunch break to check one out if they hadn't moved my office out of the city centre a week ago. :-(

Do you think it's likely/unlikely they'll make a Desktop X too?

I have a decent price on a used one but if the prices are going to drop further, I ought to wait...

Then again if the non-X versions can be upgraded with firmware the way it sounds like, maybe the prices won't drop.

What to do.

EDIT: also, are they spacing out their announcements over the course of NAMM this weekend, or is HD500X the only thing we're going to see from them this summer?

Hey Toneman2121, where's that dog of yours?  Been good, actually joined a band with some friends in the neighborhood.  We suck but it's fun.  Bought a Peavy 6505+ combo and cut the head off it.  Running that with a GT100 and it works amazingly well for what we need.  I'd consider another HD500, but I'd want to play one before purchasing it.

Hope all's well on your end...

I can't believe that the HD Pro didn't initially come out with more processing power...this seems like a kick in the junk for those guys.

So if this HD500X is to freshen things up for new customers...how much longer do we all have to wait?  Haven't seen a Firmware update for months with the HD500, so what....another 6 months?

The peasants are largely unimpressed and restless...
