What exactly does the Line <> Stomp switch do? HD500X

Hi, I'm using 4CM and tweaking the gain of each stage is important when trying to maximize signal to noise ratio when saturating my amp's input section.  So please what exactly does the LIne <> Stomp switch do?  It seems like maybe it effects both the send and return gains - anything else?

The Line <> Stomp switch on the rear is assignable?  I'm having trouble finding that in the manual, please assist?  The FX Loop block has Send and Return gain knobs, but switching the LIne <> Stomp switch on the rear does something above and beyond that...

From the manual

"Note: Use the LINE-STOMP switch on the back of POD HD500X to choose between levels for Rack FX versus Pedals. This Send parameter can then be used to further fine-tune the level fed to your connected devices"

Based on the labels and the fact this note is direct behind the send, I would Guess if set to "Line" it would send a line level signal out of the FX Send. So a0db (or close) level out. "Stomp" on the other hand would seem to send what would typically be a "Stomp" box or a <0db level out of the FX Send.  I don't use the 4 cable method but I would Guess you would want the "Stomp" option as your output in that method would be going to your Amp's preamp input so you would not want a line level signal as it would overdrive the preamp. While overdrivine the pre-amp is normal thing for some grit in your tone that would be better done with a overdrive effect where it could be better controlled.

So yes, an educated guess would be Line would be higher level than Stomp - does it then also adjust the Return sensitivity/gain?  A stomp box (and the input section of my amp) could or probably have lots of gain....    I realize I can "play" with this, but when I buy a tool I'd like to "know" what it is doing and how to use it...

Yes, my respose is an educated guess as I use a DT with the L6 link.

and Yes your input could have lots of gain, but if you had the swtich set set to "line" it would likely be not as controlable. So when you wanted to get a clean tone it will still have bit of overdrive coming from the board on a switch on the back you could not easly turn o and off. Better to have that when you want it via overdrive or other effect. I don't see anything on the Return level in the manual.

It's to change the impedance to the appropriate intake. It not only changes the level but also helps not fry anything.

  • 2 years later...

so I'm not sure what the outcome was of this thread. I am about to embark on the 4 cable method journey and have few questions. My amp has FX loop with mix knob to it. From what I understand HD pod fx loop block has levels mix too. So what do I set HD poD levels to and what levels on Loop mix on amp?

The thread is 2 1/2 years old... you didn't hijack it. You've resuscitated it. ;)

Hahaha.. Just being careful. Lol.

So, what really is the difference between amp and line switch?  What is it's relation to the stomp/line switch?

I measured that and reported it here. Line has a 6dB hotter signal than Amp. It changes the output level at the 1/4" output jacks. I assume line/stomp is the same (line has a 6dB hotter signal than stomp) and changes the levels seen at the 1/4" FX send/return jacks.
