Acker
Hi! Would it be possible to put really heavy strings on the variax and still use the piezo features? With really heavy I'm thinking of: 012", 016", 020", 038", 052", 060" or something like this. So that I can tune down the Variax very low when using the magnetic pickups. silverhead
Sure it's possible. I would expect that, just like any other guitar, you will need to adjust the setup (maybe truss rod; almost certainly action and intonation) when you move to a different string gauge. Otherwise the string gauge shouldn't affect the operation of the piezos - they will simply pick up and use the string vibrations as usual. Whether or not you like the results is a different question. ;)
TheRealZap
results may vary... but you can surely do it... the biggest hassle would be filing the nut so that you don't bind up etc... if you don't make the adjustments to the nut the strings will make them for you over time... not a good thing... because you'll end up needing a new nut due to various string buzzes and possibly uneven fret wear and a fret job to go with it...
