Factory Presets......

Had my Helix just over week now, have to say despite a few niggling issues ( e.g. volume memory on patches) I am very happy.

 

I use an L2m as a floor monitor and still working on dialling in my tones, but why do the factory presets sound so unusable? apart from cleans most others are very fizzy despite using XLR or l6 link.

 

I was told, on an earlier post of mine  that all I needed was to select PA mode and factory presets would sound great, unless I have missed some other setting?

 

Anyone else have the same experience?

For XLR, are you using a 110 ohm AES/EBU cable?  It seems to make a huge difference.

 

Also, is your XLR Outputs setting in Global Settings on Line or Instrument?

 

Does your Helix sound good through headphones?

 

I don't know why L6 Link wouldn't be sounding good.

I have the AES/EBU cable and its set to Line,  it sounds terrible through headphones as well. :(

Agreed.  I came real close to sending my Helix back the first day because I fired it up with headphones and went to factory presets and was severely disappointed.  

 

The headphones sound horrendous.  It could be that headphones need to meet a certain ohm rating or something I dunno - but mine are I think Seinheizer HD300's or something along those lines.  I didn't think much of it with those because they've sounded terrible with my Boss GT-100 and POD-HD500X as well.

 

As far as the presets they are pretty terrible.  I had hoped they would spend a lot of time designing nice presets and made a post as such a while back -  I'm not sure how they are being designed but I am simply plugging up my Helix direct to studio monitors.  If I start a new patch, drop the JC120 model in and a plate stereo reverb - it's sounds amazing - much better than any preset I could find.

Those factory presets are 98% useless, I was very concerned when I first started playing them, fortunately it isn't hard to get really good tones by creating your own. I think their choice of cabs and mics is the culprit.

The factory presets should sound better with the 1.03 firmware. There was a bug in previous firmware a that set the mic for all the cabs to be the SM57 at 1". This is a pretty harsh sounding mic in many cases, and it's not what most of the factory presets were actually meant to have.

I have yet to try Helix, but I'm not surprised at your experience with the factory patches. It was the same with the 500 series PODs. Mostly unusable...personally I chalk it up to the myriad variables that go into patch creation. What else plays a role? Everything. The guitar, the pickups. How is the sound getting out? FRFR/PA speaker(s), a tube amp, headphones, or studio monitors? How about the room the guy was sitting in? Wall-to-wall carpet, wood floor, concrete warehouse? There's just no way you can expect them to sound the same when you change half of the elements in the equation.

 

The moral of the story? You gotta shape your own tones. It's been the case with every amp/fx unit/modeler I've ever owned. I don't expect that to change anytime soon.

Guitar In Impedance - by setting this to Auto made the presets sound better

L2M on floor monitor default floor  monitor mode, changed to PA mode also made a improvement.

 

Played back  a few of the presets and they start to sound a lot better, any more suggestions?

The info about the '57 mic bug is huge. I almost never change microphones on the different cabinets. I just quickly scrolled through the 50 or so presets I've created. Almost all of them have 57 mic on them! How did I not notice that?

I've been using the high cut on the same page to dial out everything over 10k.

Changing the cab to another cab & back again replaces the '57 with the default mic. Looks like I'm doing more tweaking....not that I'm complaining. This this sounds so good already and is so much fun!

When I first got it it had firmware 1.0 I went through the whole factory preset one and was not really happy at the sounds I was hearing then I noticed there was a factory 2 bank started going through that and was pleasantly surprised and really liked the presets that were there I have yet to go back to the other factory presets even since loading the newest firmware.

 

I have been able to make some pretty decent patches myself which was a task for me on my 11 rack I also have found that using third-party IR's is definitely good...

Depending upon the equipment used to listen to these patches can make a huge difference in sound quality and appreciation.

Would be nice to know what kind of equipment Line 6 used to create them.

Here is all the tests that I've made so far:

 

Audio Technica ATH-M50x (38 ohms imp): 

Clean preset ok, overdrive/distortion preset sound is not good, some bad distortion introduced.

 

Shure SE 535 In Ear Monitor  (36 ohms imp): 

Sound is ok for EIM, not for create presets.

 

Presonus Eris E5 studio monitor (5.25" Speaker), freq. response (53Hz - 22 kHz): 

Sound good, missing some low end obviously

 

Mackie SRM-450 Powered Speaker Monitor/PA, freq. response (42Hz - 23 kHz): 

Here is where the big grin kicks in and start to play for hours...
Sound is excellent compare to above items. 

 

So now, the only option I have to create my presets are the SRM-450 monitors...

 

Would be nice to have an FRFR speaker to check the difference, but don't want to 

invest on this since we'll play straigh into PA, no amp on stage like we use to do with 

POD HD500x.

 

About the headphone issue, this might be related to this note from Helix manual:

 

NOTE: Helix provides plenty of gain for high impedance headphones. With lower impedance headphones, you may notice a bit of distortion if the PHONES knob is turned all the way up. This is normal.

 

The above headphones are consider low impedance compare to a pair of Sennheiser HD650 (300 ohms).

There is there is a guy that I met on the 11 rack forum he goes by the name "Singtall" he made a preset pack of dang near every artist that you could think of and nailed all of them then he got the EPSI IR loader and Took the 11 rack to a new level the guy has definitely got in the ear for dialing up tone on these amp simulating machines he recently got an atomic amplifier and started to make presets for it someone over at atomic evidently caught wind of some of what he was doing and put some of his presets on on their site for people to download I've always said if one of the big three companies would grab this guy and give him their machine and let him do all the factory presets they would definitely pay for themselves as people would be singing the praises of their machine because right out of the box there would be useable presets that people would notice.

 

So if somebody's over at Line 6 would get a hold of the guy give him a helix and let him make a preset pack and just start with the next firmware update change all the factory presets to his. I guarantee you wouldn't be sorry.

I had the same problem with my HD500.  Right now (meaning as I type this) I'm over playing heavy stuff and getting back to funk for the day.  I went in to the HD500 presets and was pretty disappointed.  So I just take the ones I made for heavy sounds, dialed 'em back, and letting the funk do it.

Maybe this is in the Helix and I haven't found it yet, but would LOVE and option to delete ALL factory presets with one selection.  Nothing against Line6's presets, but 97% of them are useless to me and having to go through every bank and delete all the presets so I can set up the board I want is a big pain in the arse.  Thanks for the samples Line6 but give us a quick way to nuke them all after we are done scrolling through them....

You could export a blank setlist and then import into the factory preset setlists. And then make a completely blank bundle, so when you want to blank everything after a reset or something, it would be a simple import of a bundle.

There are also two empty banks beyond the first to factory banks the second factory bank which I thought had some useful things or leaset let me see some of the stuff that Helix could do. It wasn't too bad and was only about half is full

I used to think all presets sucked as well.  But here we find the beauty of the Helix....if there is one setting or effect in a preset that you like, you can simply copy that block and paste it into your own preset. I LOVE this about the Helix....so easy to grab any part of a preset and put it right into whatever you have created.

I agree! I  love the way the Helix has so many preset slots that they were able to provide empty User lists for me to populate with my own presets or  modified presets copied in whole or in part from factory presets. I find this liberating as I don't feel like I am blowing away or modifying factory presets that I may want to refer back to. Granted you could always refer back to original presets by restoring them from the Librarian but I love having an area that is not already populated to copy and modify to, at least initially. I really like the approach Line6 took to not pre-populating every preset slot!

There is there is a guy that I met on the 11 rack forum he goes by the name "Singtall" he made a preset pack of dang near every artist that you could think of and nailed all of them then he got the EPSI IR loader and Took the 11 rack to a new level the guy has definitely got in the ear for dialing up tone on these amp simulating machines he recently got an atomic amplifier and started to make presets for it someone over at atomic evidently caught wind of some of what he was doing and put some of his presets on on their site for people to download I've always said if one of the big three companies would grab this guy and give him their machine and let him do all the factory presets they would definitely pay for themselves as people would be singing the praises of their machine because right out of the box there would be useable presets that people would notice.

 

So if somebody's over at Line 6 would get a hold of the guy give him a helix and let him make a preset pack and just start with the next firmware update change all the factory presets to his. I guarantee you wouldn't be sorry.

I had to listen to this again. This guy really nails it. Makes me vert curious to try the Amplifire. So far, I haven't been able to make my Helix sound as good as this.

FACT: ALL PRESETS SUCK.

I had thoughts about this. I'm going to guess line 6 testing with the helix would be in a studio environment ( I bet a good1) and I would also guess test at line 6 would be using some of the higher end line 6 amp/speakers and a line 6 guitar.

 

I do not have a studio.....not even close, I am not using a line 6 powered speaker, so the sound of the presets that I hear will be different.

Even guitar can change the sound.

 

My setup is not low end at all but I bet few if anyone in here is using the power amp I am, so if I made presets that sound good on my gear it might sound bad on other peoples gear.

 

Most presets just need a minor tweaking, and a few sound good. A few do kinda suck though. BUT NOT ALL:)

Well, I'm not sure you can make that guarantee. I would be VERY sorry to see Line 6 do that. As a non-metal head, every tone that guy played sounded identical to me (OK, I'm exaggerating somewhat). The presets in the HELIX have a nice blend of different styles. If you guys think this guy nails the metal tone (you guys would say tones, :)), then maybe he could put the metal presets together, but I have no interest in metal tones, so well done Line 6 for putting in a wide mix of styles in the presets.

Of course. It's a mid to high gain package. But it's very well done. And although I agree that the wide mix of styles in the presets are a nice offer from Line 6, I still have to say that I cannot make any of the amps sound like the amps in the amplifire video. I might suck at editing, but I get these sounds on my Axe-Fx...pretty close, but not on the helix. So yeah, would be curios to see what Singtall could come up with:)

This is precisely the reason that drag-and-drop tone solutions don't exist. Build your own patches folks...it's the only way you're gonna be happy. And once you get the hang of it, it's a hell of a lot quicker to dial one in than downloading dozens of "ready made" patches, and auditioning them one by one.

I think you misunderstand. I don't do "drag and drop". I make patches from scratch all the time. I audition all amps, all cabs and if they are not sufficiant...IR's.

What I am trying to say is that Singtall made some really good sounding patches on the amplifire. If I could get them, I wouldn't use any of them exactly like he's done it, but I would be curious to see what he's done to the setup. But maybe it's not doable on a helix, and the amplifire is just a better unit for that kinda sound. That's of course possible:)

I think the biggest problem with the factory presets is that they have zero or not sufficient cut in the highs... As soon as I applied a high cut at about 7-8khz in the global EQ most of them sounded much better. However, I still cannot get the Helix to sound as good as my (old) Axe FX Std, I find it really hard to tweak to be honest. I think I need someone to educate me, because I am soon running out of things to tweak...  :unsure:
