HD500x- How do I monitor thru my PC?

Sorry all, I can only imagine how many times you've heard this question but I TRULY cannot find an answer through searching.

Quite simply, Can my 500x be monitored thru my PC speakers with only the USB cord attached? I'm hoping to work on patches with the HD500x edit program without having to hook up to my interface or use a DAW.

Yes, but the sound quality will be reduced because you will have to use your PC sound card. With the USB connected to the 500X you will be able to run the edit program. But you will then have to visit the Sound section of the control panel to reset the audio device to your PC sound card (it will have defaulted to the 500X as soon as you connected its USB). Then you will need to connect the 500X analog outputs to your PC's audio input, probably needing an adapter.

I think you'll be disappointed with the results for your purpose. The degradation in sound quality will render the setup virtually useless for working on your patches. They won't sound the same when you listen to them again through the 500X. Either of the above suggestions is preferable.

I agree with everyone else. Monitor using the HD500. If the 'puter speakers are powered and use a 3.5 mm stereo jack you could unplug it from the 'puter and plug the 3.5 mm stereo jack into the Pod's headphone jack.

The most straightforward way of doing this is to hook up a decent pair of studio monitor speakers to your POD and select the POD as  the default audio device (playback/recording) on your PC.  If you leave the POD connected and turned on when using your PC, the POD and it's connected studio monitors with provide for all sound both from the PC as well as the guitar or mic plugged into the POD.  Of course if the POD is turned off you won't have sound from the PC.

... just, it should be avoided to disconnect or switch off the POD when specific apps like a DAW or media player are running (even in a idle state) and using it as the audio interface, otherwise the PC freezes and BSOD appears..

This is true on Windows 7 and Reaper with the HD500(X). On Windows 10, this doesn't seem to be a problem. Also, for Windows 7 and Reaper, Helix doesn't have this problem.

I have sort of the reverse problem.  I hope it is close enough to the subject matter of this thread to be welcomed here instead of needing its own new topic. (I'm new to this forum.)  I'm searching for a way to tell my HD500 to NOT hijack the computer audio output when the USB is plugged in.  I plug in the USB only to run the HD500 Edit interface, not to capture audio.  I want my computer audio to stay on the earphone output and go into my PA mixer into its own channel where I can EQ it to sound nice for YouTube videos, etc. to play my guitar along with. (not for recording)  I don't want the computer sound to go through the HD and come out on my PA's guitar channel, which is EQed for my guitar.  Is there a way to do this?

Also, I have the problem that hurghanico mentions where I plug in the USB just to run Edit, and whatever audio is playing (YouTube, etc.) freezes and has to be restarted.  SongSurgeon, unfortunately, freezes and will not restart again properly at all unless I do some fiddling that I can't quite remember. I think I have to turn off the HD itself, leave the USB in, start SS, then turn on the POD again.  Or some stupid ritual like this that I will have to figure out again next time it happens.  Things would be much better if I could just tell the HD to keeps its hands off the computer audio output altogether, and connect only to the Edit program.  Thanks in advance for any advise.

I never have the problem with my sound device being hijacked, but the only reason I assume that's to be the case is I have the default playback device set to my MOTU sound card.  Have you checked that your computer sound card is selected as the default playback device?

Thanks Duned and hurghanico.  Good thought to ask about the default device.  I double checked, and the default is, in fact, the built-in sound card.   But why was I so airheaded before your comments that I did not think to watch the sound card window when I plugged in the POD??  The POD does, indeed, make itself the default card every time it is plugged in.  When I right clicked to un-default it I saw the option to disable it entirely, and presto – no more HD500 audio in my face – ever.  Well, until I want the POD sound card to be active for some reason, in which case I will have forgotten what I did and probably post again.  No, jk, I will document it for later.  Thanks again you guys for helping me!  What a cool group.

All part of the learning curve.

remember that to use eventually the POD as the audio interface with some apps (like DAW softwares or media players) it doesn't need to be set as the default audio interface also for the OS..

all you have to do is to adjust the audio settings of those specific apps in order to use the POD instead of the built-in AI

Ok, that makes sense. I would have to un-disable the POD sound card for ity, but I will make my notes about that.  You are a great resource here.  I have read lots of your other posts.  Thanks again
