Problem Saving To Custom 1 Setting

Recommended Posts

I have chosen 5 different models (D-28, sitar, etc.) I want to save to “Custom 1â€.  Standard tuning.  The saving is not "sticking" when following the manual instructions.

 Here's what I do:

1) Navigate to the first model I want to enter into 5-way switch position1 in Custom 1 or 2

2) Press the Guitar Model Selector until the alternating blinking occurs

3) Turn knob on the Guitar Model Selector to Custom 1 and move Pickup Selector Switch to position 1

4) Press the Guitar Model Selector until the quick blue-blinking occurs

At this point it is my understanding that the model should be copied to the new position.  It is not.  Just the passive guitar pickup sound is heard.  Am I doing something wrong?

if it's a JTV-89 you can't currently use custom 1 (it has hard coded models of the factory pickups for use with alt tunings)

you'll need to use custom 2....

if its a different JTV you may have a different issue.

Yes, a JTV-89.  I tried saving to Custom 2 and it will not either.  The blue light doesn't "flutter" like Custom 1 did when holding it down.  When I take my hand off the knob, the blue light turns to white in a couple of seconds.  I notice that on some models you have to pull up a knob, but the instruction booklet didn't say to.

I don't have an 89 to know firsthand the limitations, but custom 2 should not be a problem... also you can save the models anywhere not just custom 1/2...

How would you copy one model sound and add it to the Custom model bank your Variax (without using Workbench)?  Sometimes it can apply to other models.

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking, but the procedure for storing models in the Custom banks is provided on page 13 of the JTV Pilot's Guide, as follows:

Let’s say you found a sound that you know you’ll be coming back to again and
again. Here’s what you do:
1. Be sure your sound is exactly as you want it. This is going to store the
guitar model and tone knob settings.
2. Press and hold the Guitar Model Selector knob for 2.5 seconds or until
the LEDs begins to blink to enter customization mode.
3. Now turn the Guitar Model Selector to CUSTOM 1 or CUSTOM
2. It’s your choice. The Alternate Tuning LED is no longer lit.
4. Move the Pickup Selector Switch to the desired position you want to
store it. JTV-59 Users: Push Alternate Tuning Knob then move Pickup
Selector Switch to access positions 2 or 4.
5. To save an alternate tuning to this position, select the desired tuning
on your Alternate Tuning knob. Skip this step if you do not want an
alternate tuning.
6. Press and hold the Guitar Model Selector knob for 2.5 seconds.
Presto!, you just saved your first guitar model to a custom bank! Don’t
forget to set your Alternate Tuning knob to MODEL if you want to
recall the tunings exactly the way you’ve saved them.

Yeah, that's what I tried to describe in my post up top.  I wonder if anyone here has been successful with this procedure because, unless I'm missing something, it's not working for me.

The v1.9 firmware update for James Tyler® Variax® features enhanced palm muting for a more natural response to muted guitar parts and aggressive playing styles. It also provides faster updates with additional error checking.

For JTV-89 Customers Only: In addition to the 28 electric, acoustic and eclectic instruments, you also get five high-gain models exclusive to JTV-89 loaded into custom bank 1. Each model is based on a different pickup position, and delivers high-gain guitar tone while allowing you to access drop tunings, custom Dream Rig configurations and more.

The five high-gain models come with a couple caveats:

1. For the time being, they are not editable in Workbench, nor will you be able to mix and match the body or pickup models.

2. For the time being, the High Gain Model is hard-wired into the Custom 1 bank. You will not be able to overwrite the Custom 1 bank from the guitar or from Workbench.

Thanks everyone.  I was on the phone with Line 6 support today.  They were VERY helpful.  Evidently when copying an existing model to Custom 2 (without Workbench), the procedure needs to be done quickly or it may "time out" thus wont save.  Line 6 support also experienced this anomaly on their end while on the phone.  After quickly doing the procedure, as they recommended, I was able to successfully save to Custom 2.
