Free Mesa Recto SM57 IR

Ok guys, made my first IR...skipped out on work today to do it

I'm giving it away for free (attached), please let me know if you like it, hate it, or have suggestions.

I know there's a lot more learning I need to do. It's pretty raw. I could spend more time tweaking it. I've only tested it through headphones straight out of the Helix on a blank preset with only two blocks; a Helix "Amp" model (not "Preamp" or "Amp+Cab") and this IR. No EQ, effects, or any other blocks.

I did this for myself because I really wasn't liking the Helix OOTB Amps and Cabs through headphones (Sennheiser HD280 Pro), studio monitors (M-Audio BX-8), my PA speakers (JBL Eon 515XT), or even the effects return of my Mesa M9 bass amp into a Powerhouse 2x12 w/ horn (which actually sounded best). I loved Helix preamps through my Mesa Mark V, Stilleto Deuce II, Simul 2:90, or 20/20 power sections into my Recto 2x12. I loved Helix Amps into Amplitube 4 cabs only with the amps turned off. I crafted this IR to get a lot closer to those tones and get myself closer to using only the Helix.

I'm sure Redwirez and Ownhammer IR's are much better, but I havent tried them yet.

Hopefully this might show the IR possibilities to those that may not totally satisfied with the stock Helix sounds, or may just want different options.

Update 3/31/2016

To get a lot closer the real Recto cab sound, try these settings on the Helix IR block with this IR to match Celestion V30 specs frequency range:

Low Cut @ 70Hz

High Cut @ 5000Hz

Celestion V30 Specs

http://celestion.com/product/1/vintage_30/

I have also exported my Helix test and tweak presets (1024 & 2048 samples) with the Cali Rectifire Amp and Mesa Recto SM57 IR.  I had to change the file extension to *.txt to upload it to this site.  You will need to change the exported preset  "Mesa Rect IR####.txt "  back to "Mesa Rect IR####.hlx" before importing to the Helix app.

The presets have the impulses in slot 1.

Made a Dropbox account and posted and shared the 3 IR's and corresponding Helix test presets.

Will start posting to the Line 6 IR Forum

I'm sure Redwirez and Ownhammer IR's are much better, but I havent tried them yet.

Hopefully this might show the IR possibilities to those thinking about returning their Helix too.

Downloaded and liked it very much man. I dont have a 2x12 recto or any other 2x12, so its nice to have. I like to hear a few more mids in my tones than what you have here but, thats purely subjective. Much appreciated.

Thanks. The Recto cab has V30's which are darker and a little scooped. I may try different mic positions or some post capture eq, dynamics, etc. I might also try to get my hands on a Marshall 1936 2x12, another of my fav cabs I used to have.

I've almost always played and gigged sealed 2x12 cabs. I think they are a big factor to the sounds in my head when I am playing with software and hardware modellers.

Ok, I might have to join the "am I crazy" club with the other guy as I must have REALLY different personal tastes.

I just went to the Ownhammer site (someone mentioned free demos) and sure enough, they have OwnHammer 412 MES-ST V60 Free Demo based on a 2001 Mesa Boogie Standard slant 4x12 cabinet and 60 watt Celestion Vintage 30's.  this pack comes with 200+ IR's with different mics and different settings, etc. I havent done a deep dive yet, but on the 10 or so I tried so far, I STILL get the sort of nasally quality like the Line 6 HX V30 cabs with a Cali Rectifier amp model.

http://www.ownhammer.com/free/v4-demo/

Since they are free anyway, I'll post a couple of the plain Mesa Recto V30 SM57 ones here.  I did notice their file size is MUCH smaller than the ones I made, around 20% of the size.  Mine may be using too many Helix resources, more storage, etc.

When I think of a Recto cab, I think dark and ballsy.  I want it to punch me in the stomach and make me want to hurl my tacos.

Oh well, to each his own.  It's been an amazing experience for me to realize how much of a difference the cabs make on the amp models.  I absolutely love Helix amp/preamp models now.  Thanks to Line 6 for letting us load our own IR's.  It would be nice if Line 6 gave us a simple IR utility, especially since it has all of the hardware in place to do it.

Posted Line 6 IR Utility to Idea Scale.

There are some requests for Tone Matching and some other IR functionality, but an IR Utility could be very simple if Line 6 would put the pieces together for us, instead of the multiple-component, complex configuration options (for PC) that I can find right now.

Upvoted on IdeaScale.

I've never done it, but...

Voxengo Deconvolver, $49.95

Waves IR-1, sometimes very much on sale. I think it can create IR files, but maybe only in Waves' proprietary format.

Altiverb, way too expensive for me.

After playing with this IR a bit more, I found that tweaking the Low Cut and High Cut to match the Celestion Vintage 30 specs makes this IR sounds REALLY close to the Recto cab.

Try these settings on the Helix IR block with this IR:

Low Cut @ 70Hz

High Cut @ 5000Hz

Thanks.  I am actually using a demo of Voxengo Deconvolver and experimenting with a couple of DAW's (Pro Tools, Sonar, Fruity Loops) and plug ins.  I haven't tried Waves or Altiverb.  I'd hate to spend hundreds more on this.

I have also exported and attached (to the first post on this thread) my Helix test and tweak preset with the Cali Rectifire Amp and Mesa Recto SM57 IR.  I had to change the file extension to *.txt to upload it to this site.  You will need to change it back to *.hlx before importing to the Helix app.

Hah, just discovered that Studio One Pro (my main DAW) includes an IR Maker utility. When I have some time (double hah), I'll have to investigate all this. IRs of a bunch of Amplitube cab/room/mic combinations maybe?

It's not illegal to do that, or to distribute the resulting IRs, is it? I'm pretty sure the Bricasti IRs for instance have their explicit blessing, and I very much doubt IK would agree to any such thing.

Added 2 more Recto IR's here on the top post and to Dropbox.

The first one I posted was dark and deep, #2 is med-dark, and #3 is light...sort of like my Starbucks roasts that I am going to need tomorrow.  Goodnight y'all!!!

Fyi, I had accidentally left the Mesa Dual Rec amp on with the Recto cab when I made the first Mesa Recto IR. I remade it again, this time with the amp on intentionally with some more recent practices.
