JTV 69 vs 89, What is different?

Recommended Posts

Aesthetic/stylistic differences only...just depends on what style of guitar you prefer.

The 69 is basically a Strat-style design, floating bridge, with HSS (JTV69) or SSS (JTV69S) mag pickup configurations. The neck is a baseball bat...narrow where it should be wide (at the nut), and wide where it should be narrow (profile)...but that's subjective of course.

The 89 is a more typical "shredder" style instrument...flatter/wider neck, plus a Floyd.

With the exception of some of the alt tunings (which can be customized anyway, so it really doesn't matter), the modeling is all the same no matter which JTV you choose.

The 89F Floyd trem is Very different from your strat-like trem on the 69 & 69S. I'm in the 69S camp, and my band's other guitarist has a Floyd on his guitars and loves them. I'm not a trem user in general, and it's too much mucking around from me.

The other big difference besides the neck profile noted above is the 89F has 2 split coil HB pickups, where the 69 has an HB and 2 single coils. My 69S has all 3 single coils. My 59 has two traditional HB's. I use my mag pickups probably 80-90% of time, so good sounding pickups are key to me. The models are the same, but physically, they are very different.
