Who'd Want More Custom Model Banks?

Recommended Posts

Not that this would ever happen, because it probably won't, BUT if POSSIBLE, would you want more custom banks in the model knob?

I think I'd kill for it, because I have a lot of custom guitars that I'd like to put on my Variax, but at the same time I'm kinda OCD about keeping the rest of the default models in with the guitar so I still have the full spectrum of guitars at my disposal. I don't use Gretch or Rickenbackers but sometimes I get in the mood to jam on them from time to time because of their unique tone.

I'd love for custom models though.

Also if you want, name some presets you'd put in.

For me I'd have:

SG style models (LP with backed up pickups for more bite)

Fat Strat (Strat with 2 single coils combined as a humbucker)

Humbucker Tele

Jaguar (Rickenbacker with 2 strat single coils)

Strat modeled after a Billy Corgan custom Strat.

you do know that you can overwrite every model on the variax?

also if you use a pod XT or X3 you can have every model be custom AND access all the original factory presets?

(build the model into the tone and select the "f" models for factory, or "u" models for user models...  both f and u are the same at start)

this of course only applies to the original variax....

the factory models were removed from the james tyler variax at version 1.8+ if i recall correctly to accommodate the HD acoustic models.

I think he mentioned he was aware you could overwrite every model, but just didn't want to overwrite the 'regular' banks. I'm kinda with him; even though there are some I don't use very often, it's nice having them at my disposal should the occasion arise.

There's definitely quite a few custom creations that get swapped in and out of my Custom banks, things like

- '72 thinline (using ES-335 humbuckers; not perfect, but it does alright)

- P90 thinline (something like Fender's JA-90)

- La Cabronita

- Gibson Nighthawk (Firebird neck pickup, Strat middle, slanted ES-335 bridge pickup, etc.)

- Silver Jet w/ Filtertrons

- Strat done with P90s (sounds great)

- Neil Young's 'Old Black' (using Firebird and Casino pickups)

- Jonny Lang's custom tele (P90 middle, LP humbuckers with the output cranked)

- Sit-Dano bass (Dano body, Sitar pickups, octave down... wicked rumbling bass sound... found it in the custom bank of my pre-owned Variax 500 when I bought it, and I've kept the model around)

- Frankencaster (Tele body with Tele bridge, mini-hum middle and P90 neck... or was that P90 middle, mini-hum neck... jeez, I'm going to have to go back and look at that... plus some series/out-of-phase combinations with those)

- Custom of my custom (Recreating my Strat with wiring for bridge/neck series, bridge/middle series, and out-of-phase switch for neck pickup)

I've also got some models done up with different tone capacitor values, essentially allowing the 5-way switch to act similar to a Varitone in conjunction with the tone control.

So yeah... whole lot of crazy junk. When I see it all listed like that it makes me think maybe I need to stop tinkering and just play my damn guitar.

I know that, that's what I've been doing, but I said that I also am urged to want to keep the models I replace from time to time.

It's probably not really possible if the Variax is already using all the memory inside the guitar's hardware, but this is a theoretical question.

While you could get a POD device for custom banks, it would be nice to have a little more on the guitar itself. While technically it is possible, maybe with hardware upgrades, that would probably be a pain.

Like I said, this is a theoretical question.

sounds like an awesome collection... which there was a place on customtone for these.

Yeah, it's funny, they never seemed worried about having the Variax be part of Custom Tone; I don't know why given the Workbench capabilities. I guess Workbench was originally an purchasable add-on in the first series of Variaxes, but with it becoming part of the base package I'm surprised they haven't added it.

Fine! I'll go build my own Custom Tone website... with black jack... and hookers! in fact, forget the website.

I’d like to be able to load guitar models from Helix.

But even more importantly, I’d like to see Line6 do a next generation of the Variax models. There was clearly a big difference between the 1.x and 2.x models - and not necessarily for the better in all cases. So it would seem there’s room for improvement in the modeling process. If these could be loaded as separate model packs, I’d even be more than willing to pay for them. I have 4 Variax guitars, so clearly I’ve bought into the technology. My JTV-69S is my main gigging instrument. Its light, plays well , is stable, stays in tune, and provides the flexibility I need.

I have often wondered why Line 6 doesn't have more, at least, pickup choices. How about modeling this one (Van Halen).

https://legendarytones.com/edward-van-halen-pickup/

Or the Seymour Duncan JB or the Hot texas ones that are supposed to be like what Stevie Ray Vaughn used. There's a bunch out there But they haven't ever done that.
