HD500X downloaded metal patches sound horrible?

I recently picked up the HD500X and decided to download some patches to kind of use to figure out my own patches. All of the patches I downloaded were metal patches and when I actually hook the HD500X into my amp the patches sound very very sharp, they can't be played without a headache. I recreated the patches myself on the HD500X and the sound is not sharp at all. I don't understand why the downloaded ones sound so bad. If this helps I'm using a Marshall Mg100HDFX with an LTD EC1000.

Because someone else created them. With their guitar, their combo amp, or guitar cabinet, or FRFR speaker, or headphones, or studio monitors, etc etc etc. Maybe they did it at 110 dB, or maybe it was whisper-quiet bedroom volume. Maybe it's a patch built by a 15 yr old kid who's been playing for 3 months and has no idea what "tone" is. Maybe it was done by a guy who's been playing for 30 years...but he's tone-deaf, still trying to master "Smoke On The Water", and he has no idea what "tone" is. There's no way to verify any of it, and no way to tell what it actually sounded like on their end.

We can sit here all day listing one variable after another. What other pieces are there in the rig? Other external FX pedals, outboard EQ...the list is of Biblical length. And even if you had the info, the odds that you'll just happen to own the exact same stuff that the guy has in his rig, is basically zero. In fact, its very likely that the ONLY thing the 2 rigs will have in common is the POD. There's not much anyone can do with only one piece to a very large puzzle. That being the case, the fact that the tone sounds as awful as the smell of a boiled jock-strap, is not at all surprising. Customtone is largely a waste of time...you might occasionally get lucky, but on average, I'd say less than 1% of the stuff you download will turn out to be usable.

Be sure you are going into the FX loop of the amp too. For me, the HDs sound best using the Studio Direct output mode.

Look for some patches by UncleJason (Jason Stallworth - great guy and guitarist from Jason's Metal) not too bad out of the gate.

No dl'd patch is going to be "the one" without some work.

Nico has a great thread here: http://line6.com/support/topic/21670-collection-of-artists-patches-made-by-l6-products-specialists/

Don't give up - see how the patches were built and where you need to take them for your tone.
