Question about MIDI signals

Recommended Posts

Sometime ago I watched a video on Periphery's live set rig and I learned that they used a DAW to send MIDI signals to their Axe-Fx to switch patches during their performance. I was curious if the Helix is capable of this and if there is a good tutorial to set it up.

Haven't tried any of this, but I think Helix responds to MIDI program change msgs in the standard way, and I think it's in Omni receive mode by default (listens to all MIDI channels), so no setup should be needed. Don't think you can change setlists via MIDI, so program changes call the corresponding preset in the currently selected setlist.

The Helix's MIDI implementation chart is on page 57 of the latest manual, and, yes, you can call up presets, snapshots within presets, toggle footswitches, and do other stuff on the Helix via MIDI. And, yes, you can change setlists (well, you can call up presets from different setlists - I'm not actually sure if the Helix changes setlists when you do this). As far a tutorial, the MIDI messages the Helix is looking for are pretty clear in the manual... As far as what you need to in your DAW, it would depend on your DAW. If you want to have it timed with a song, you'll probably need to set up a MIDI track and program the MIDI events on the timeline where you want things to change.

The DAW can trigger Helix and Helix's switches can also control your DAW's transport simultaneously. You can even have any tracks from your DAW routed to a specific set of outputs.

Thanks for the replies thus far guys, its super helpful! I guess I need to do some more research for Logic, so I can figure out how to program the changes.

Update! I've figured out how to set MIDI events to switch patches, but I can't seem to get snapshots to work.
