distorted/week input signal

Recommended Posts

Just received a used PODHD500X and having issues with a week distorted signal. Have used several different guitars, cables, amps etc and getting same sound out of all outputs including headphones. Input signal is set to guitar and started a new patch from scratch with nothing in the signal chain (problem still there). Signal does come through 90% clean if the string attack is harsh but any playing below that is crackly sounding and signal goes in and out similar to that of having a bad guitar cable. I'm thinking its an internal problem with the unit but want to make sure its not something simple (still figuring my way around the editing etc). Anyway, any suggestions would be helpful, tried searching online with no luck, thanks.

make sure the noise gate is set properly, because otherwise you could have similar problems

Currently the noise gate is off unless there is a global setting for this?

It should be a simple plug and play for sure. Hope it isn't the unit.

Usually most errors at the start will be user ones.

It appears you have done the usual trouble shoot and then some.

Does the Guitar and cable sound good in an amp or other device? So too the headphones on another source, but as I said it looks like you have done the usual checking.

A clean patch will be very low in volume and might clip if output master volume up full but should be clean with passive pick ups.

Check input impedance on Auto or change it around.

check output does not have something weird going on with global EQ. Maybe a factory reset?

If there is an internal hardware issue lets check a different input.

Try the Aux input and set input to Aux to rule out problem on the guitar jack.

Good Luck

I'm thinking it's internal as well but appreciate the feedback. I will check the the auxiliary input as suggested just to rule that out.

Before using the aux input, make sure you are using a patch that allows for the assignment of the aux input. I know he said it, but I wanted to emphasize it.

Will do, thanks.

Did you perform a Global Reset before creating your patches (as well as calibration)?

Hi, I'm having the same problem.  Second hand HD500.  Has been working fine as an FX unit going into my AC15 but now I'm using with DT25 and amp models.  I'm getting loads of clipping as described in this post.  Have tried heaps to sort it out and can't seem to get to bottom of it.  Wondering if its also a faulty unit now.  What was the outcome of your tests rockjumper?

Sounds like the OP had bad AD chips.  You're issue sounds more like too hot of an input signal.  Make sure you have Input 1 set to Guitar and Input 2 set to something else like Aux.  Also any effects before the amp may need to be reduced in volume until you find the problem.

thanks for the advice.  I have come to similar conclusion.  I went to the local guitar shop today and had a go on an HD500X and had same problems so have ruled out a fault with my unit.  the signal is fine if I bring the guitar volume down and have the pad switch on.  Seems odd to me though - I'm only using a Strat and AC15 model - not going balls out rock!  I would have thought the signal level I'm using is pretty standard.  I'll have more of a play with the settings.

but do you have active pickups?... or do you use some wireless system with its pre-amp gain/volume turned up?..

j

No. Noiseless gender passive pickups. So, the weird thing is I can create a new tone with no FX. I create an amp block and choose the AC15 preamp. The default setting is fine, but just too clean. i make a few tweaks to try to make it sound like my AC15 amp, by increasing the gain to breakup point and adjusting EQ. I now get digital clipping no matter what is adjusted - channel volume, master volume etc. if I switch on the pad and and roll back the guitar volume it goes away. I can hear the clipping with headphones also, even on very low volume so I know it's not the phones distorting.

It's getting very frustrating.

AHA! fixed it

I figured out it was my input signal that's creating clipping.  the Pad cut didnt make enough difference, so what I've done is put the Studio Pre EQ at the front of my chain and reduced the output on that FX block until the clipping goes, then adjust the amp channel volume so it matches other patches.  To do this I had already found my quietest patches (the JC120 model) and matched everything to that amp.

I'm still really surprised my Strat with single coils is causing this clipping. But anyway - fixed!

You would be amazed at how many people try to do it the other way --- matching everything to their favorite (usually loudest) patch
