Routing brain fart

You can set the level to your preference in Global Settings -> Ins/Outs. Experiment. Here's what the manual says:

Choose "Instrument" when using a Send/Return pair as an FX loop for stompboxes; choose "Line" when using a Send/Return pair as an FX loop for line-level rack processors, or as additional inputs and outputs for connecting keyboards, drum machines, mixers, and other gear.

Which, frustratingly, doesn't answer your question... that said, I think it's because different amps are different in the way they handle the loop.

As above - it depends, you just need to try it and see what works.  Line level is significantly hotter than instrument, so you'll have to see what makes the amp return happiest.

... got me curious, I checked the manual and they're not specific if they're using -10dbv or +4dbv for their line level standard.  Given the pro nature of Helix I'd guess +4.  That seems pretty hot for an amp return - start with volumes low!

Thanks for advice guys..I use send 1 to a Marshall return using line level. It has a button on the back for the -10 +4 deal. Send 3 and 4 are to Laney itr-x. Great wet dry sounds...just racking my brain on the best way to connect it all....

Yeah, it all depends on the sensitivity design of the Return Input that Helix's Send signal is hitting. Try it using both of Helix's Send Levels and see which works best for the gear receiving the signal.

And, if you are routing the signal back to any of Helix's FX Returns from one of your amps, pedals, or outboard gear components, try both of Helix's FX Return Sensitivity Level settings (Line vs. Instrument) to see which works best.
