Upgrading speaker in Powered speaker cab. Thoughts?

Recommended Posts

Hi Line 6 community,

I have a ev elx 12 powered speaker that I use with my helix. I also have a vintage ev 12L speaker sitting around and am thinking about switching the stock speaker out for the 12L. I know it's a lot heavier and fuller sounding speaker with a very flat response. Question is, will this work, are they compatible? Or would this be a waste? Any thoughts or experience would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Justin

I can't imagine a single reason why it would benefit someone to do this.  You do realize that these type of powered speakers system typically use DSP processing that tune the frequency response of the speakers and compression driver for best overall frequency response performance, right??  Changing the speaker would apply processing that's tuned for a speaker that responds differently.  It's not like these speakers just have a simple crossover between the speaker and the compression driver.  Unless you want to re-design the DSP processing also...

DunedinDragon, I appreciate your reply and what you said makes perfect sense. This really helped and I do not plan on messing with the powered speaker. It's pretty decent for what it is...

Cruisinon2, the wheels were turning, the wheel is working well so I'm not fixing it!!

Thanks!

This is a good example of how the thought process of playing through analog effects and a tube amp is so different from that used for a high end modeling rig. It's hard to wrap your head around the small differences that make a big impact. You have to sort through it one piece at a time. Which is what gives a forum like this it's real value.
