efrutchey
So I use my helix plugged into the effects return of my blackstar HT40. I just recently purchased one of the Fremen packs. I plan on duplicating my playlist and taking the cab sim out of all of the presets to use with my tube amp. Is this just as simple as taking out the "IR" in each preset since his presets use IRS?
rd2rk
Try it WITH the IRs. Try it WITHOUT the IRs. Try replacing the amp with the corresponding Preamp. Any way you go, the Fremen presets are optimized to sound good with his custom IRs thru a FRFR rig. They aren't going to sound the same thru the HT40 (I had one, and an Engl). You WILL end up tweaking A LOT.
rvroberts
Well yes and no! Removing the IRs will be a first step. As you are using a different speaker and your amp will also be colouring the sound, you will need to tweak somewhat till you get close to the expected result. Depending on the sound that was intended and the IR, that might be very little or a lot! You can't get the sound of a Vox AC30 through blue backs and a Fender Twin with say JBLs all that accurately out of your 1x12 Blackstar cab. You might get close with some well chosen EQ though. The other thing that might be a bit different will be where delay and modulation is used - if it's post the IR (for a more studio sound) you obviously will get a slightly different effect there too. The IR is essentially the speaker and the Mic combined - so it's a bit different to a speaker on it's own. Which leads to my last thought, make sure you have no Stereo effects!

But as already stated the best thing is try stuff (with a fresh set of ears). Play for 15 minutes, then go get a cup and think about what you did. Come back in an hour and tweak again for 15 minutes. After the second or third time, you will have it dialed in! ;)
amsdenj
I have tried it. See https://wordpress.com/view/jimamsden.wordpress.com. I replace the tone controls in the Normal channel of my Showman amp with Hi-Fi tone controls (flat on 5 with boost/cut) so its a good input for Helix amp models. It sounds great, but isn't flexible enough. I need to use FRFR so I can also do acoustic tones using my JTV-69S.
