Helix and amps

Recommended Posts

Hey all.

This has probably been covered elsewhere so apologies.

So I'm thinking of returning to the dark side and getting a tube amp but I wanted to hold on to my Helix and use it as an FX processor.
So my question is, how do I put some of the helix effects in front of the amp and some in the loop. As an example, I might want to run a phaser in the front and a delay and reverb in the loop.

I've mentally gone through the routing and I can't see how to get it working.

Presuming it can be done and I'm just being a numpty.

Cheers

Matt

I think you are describing a basic 4CM (4-Cable Method) configuration:

Guitar -> Helix Input

<Front-of-Amp effects>

Helix FX Loop Send -> Amp Input

Amp Effect Loop Send -> Helix FX Loop Return

<Effect Loop Effects>

Helix Output -> Amp Effect Loop Return

Here is how I have my two amps wired.  You can use this wiring method and use the templates that are supplied on the Helix to show you how to use the effects loop.  The sound is AMAZING.  It's much better than putting all of your effects in front of the amp.  I have my wah and distortion in the front with chorus and reverb going through the effects loops.

4 Cable Method (4CM) for Amp #1
Cable #1 Guitar to Helix Guitar In
Cable #2 Helix FX Send Loop 1 to Amp #1 Main Input
Cable #3 Amp #1 FX Send Loop to Helix FX Return Loop 1
Cable #4 Helix 1/4" Left (mono) Out to Amp #1 FX Return Loop

Cable Method (7CM) for Amp #2
Cable #5 Helix FX Send Loop 2 to Amp #2 Main Input
Cable #6 Amp #2 FX Send Loop to Helix FX Return Loop 2
Cable #7 Helix 1/4" Right Out to Amp #2 FX Return Loop
