DI, will there be more templates? for instance one for FL Studio?

What, no template for Digital Performer?

The testers who know FL Studio and DP were gone the week we made templates. They're really easy to make on your own, especially from HX Edit. The hardest part was deciding which commands to include.

Cool. Very Cool.

I am actually looking forward to making my own.

This feature can potentially increase/evolve my workflow for making music in the studio. Much thanks!

I was kind of wondering about that. I'm guessing with all of the available shortcuts in programs, it is difficult to come up with a template that anyone would use right out of the "box". I do not envy your guys task.

Here's the Logic/GarageBand template:

  • FS2—Click on/off
  • FS3—Cycle on/off
  • FS4—Rewind (hold for fast rewind)
  • FS5—Forward (hold for fast forward)
  • FS8—Clear take and return to previous location (doesn't do anything in GarageBand)
  • FS9—Stop > Return to Zero
  • FS10—Play/Pause
  • FS11—Record/Punch In/Out

Place the locator at the point you want to record, press FS11, and start playing. Screw up? Press FS8 and Logic clears the take and returns to the original location. If you nail a take, press FS9 twice and listen back. Rinse, repeat.

I think Logic has over a thousand (!) user-definable hotkeys now, so there's not much you can't do remotely from Helix.

From my first Pod to now, I've always figured I would need to spend at least a full day with an amp to try and get what I can out of it. Saving whatever I thought was interesting and listening to them again one or two days later. Just to have new ears listen to it from a fresh perspective. It is time consuming but it's been the best way for me to learn really what the amps can do.

Great approach!  I didn't look at at it that way. Thanks for sharing

Well, that's pretty much everything I would use. I may use that "template" for my DAW (Sonar X3). I'm assuming this is accesed via the MODE button.

I use that approach. I just pretend I've just received whatever amp I'm checking out and do what I've done before with a new amp. That took generally about a day.

Ok, help an ol fart out, please.

"Why" would I want to use the Helix Controller to control my DAW? Am I not busy enough already controlling the tones and multiple FX pedals with it on the patch I'm recording?

What did I miss here besides more options (and I love options so don't take this the wrong way ; ) )?

To me personally the cool thing is ya keep your hands on the guitar. You don't have to press a button and then quickly get your hands in position. It sounds like a small thing but it actually helps out a lot while recording. Another possibility is playing to backing tracks. You can skip to the song you want, start and stop it, all while keeping your hands on the guitar. It's not just for recording.

Ahhh well then I can see that now as a plus. Does it take away from the snapshot functions of turning on the fx, or does this "share" functions?

That's a good question I kind of addressed in a previous post. Don't know. I noticed in his previous temkplate example he didn't use buttons 1, 6, 7 or 12. Perhaps one of those buttons will get you in and out of that particular mode like button 6 will get into the stomp box mode.

Yep! But I will also add another thing I am looking forward to with it would be expanding keyboard shortcuts to the feet.

I plan on having a footswitch to open/focus on each of the following for FL Studio:

playlist window

piano roll window

mixer window

step sequencer window.

one for closing all windows.

and if it will let me, maybe a footswitch to change tiers in the playlist.

and of course one for play/stop. Which also covers recording after I arm it.

It can increase workflow efficiency while composing/mixing/and mastering. Like you said its not just for recording.

Yep. Theoretically, if you had an oven that could be remotely controlled by a computer via bluetooth and the program that did that used keyboard shortcuts, you could start your oven with the Helix. Why would you want to? How am I supposed to know?   ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all,

Just to let you all know that the wait is almost over. Here's the reply from a L6 support agent to ticket I opened. The issue was about the limitations of the L6link's handling by the Helix.

Quote : " I'm sorry to hear you're having this issue. It's likely a firmware incompatibility. The newest update is just around the corner in about two weeks or so. You may want to wait until the update comes out and then try it again. If you continue to have this issue after the update, let us know and we can assist. Otherwise, you'll need to use the Analog work around for now with 1/4" cable or XLR outs.
If you have anymore questions, feel free to let me know"
So you got it, firmware 2.8 should be out before July 18 and I suspect it might be labeled 3.0 as a way to highlight the major architectural changes.

Not that any of this matters in the slightest... but why not 4.0? Or 5.0, or 9.0? They've been talking up "2.8" for months, and they've known what's gonna be in it all along. If they were at all concerned with "highlighting" anything via an arbitrary number, then they'd have been pimping "3.0" the whole time.

I'll wager a testicle that they're not gonna change the designation at the 11th hour for the sake of numerical optics. Left or right... you choose. ;)

I think this is generally the best kind of response to the criticism, "How dare Company X add feature Y, which I don't want to use?" If it doesn't make your experience in a product you already purchased worse, let them do whatever they want with their product and let the market decide whether the new function is valuable. Very Rothbardian.

When it comes to bards I'll take Shakespeare over Rothbard any day of the week. "Bah humbard" :-)

So....theoretically, with the right interface I can reply by text with "I'm sorry, I can't talk right now" when my phone rings without taking my hands off the guitar.

Not that I'd ever do that.  But...you know...options.

This is all very fine and dandy, but when are they going to update the main thread to "Summer 2019". XD

Catching up on this, and saw a few comments on extra amps > I don't want amps, I want more fx, and better ones that allow me better options. I don't want 1:1 models of existing I want the functionality of X with the tones of Y, for instance a Triple Delay which allows for reverse etc...

I'm finding (especially in the delays) I've got the swell delay on that bit, but then another specialised bit of delay over there, and I'm having to come up with some most excellent routing... ah all fun and forced me to learn the Helix a lot more than surface. Such a great bit of kit.

Nobody knows! Welcome to the mystery...;)

I was watching an interview with the CEO on the Helix hour, and he mentioned that they'd actually extended the length of time that spring lasts in the northern hemisphere. summer was also extended, but sadly fall will be shortened.

So because of that decision it really is still spring.

Same BS the bosses at work try when they step on their own (input your phrase here) and we just snicker at them and go on.

Mine got stuck in the Update Mode as has been mentioned in this and other threads. Line6 updater would not see the helix when it was plugged in. I tried all the USB ports.  From some advice in this thread I re-installed HX Edit 2.8. Restarted the updater and this time it saw it and finished the update.

I don't think it had anything to do with the USB ports. I think it had to do with the driver getting re-installed.

The update worked swimmingly for me, but I'm a Stomp user so it already was on Helix Core.

My Helix Floor updated swiftly and perfectly as long as I watched for the onscreen instructions.  LOL
