rager005
Hi I'm having a problem that I get a loud crackling noise after palm muting. It's even noticeable when you straight mute the strings with your left hand, after the palm mute. This occurs on all my 3 guitars and all patches which include at least a bit of gain. The threshold of the input gate doesn't seem to make much of a difference regarding the noise (Decay is at 10ms) The only way to get rid of the sound is to turn the tone knob all the way down. I have already tried using different guitar cables. Here are samples of the problem: After palm muting: When moving my right hand and floating bridge: And here is the patch where the problem is most prominent: https://line6.com/customtone/tone/4540547/ Does anyone know what could cause this? Thx
lungho
I've loaded this patch into Native and it sounds fine.....even with the gate off. Sounds like it might be a grounding issue. I'm curious as to what others think.
cruisinon2
Just sounds like 60 cycle hum to me... single coils, or humbuckers? Is everything plugged into the same outlet...Helix, computer, studio monitors, any external pedals, etc etc?
schapman1022
Sounds very similar to my problem. High gain, noise coming in after palm mutes or quick stops. Posted about it here except my examples are just the open sound and no playing. My issue seems to get much worse when the AC or Heat comes on. The only way I am finding to get around it so far is to put a hard gate between my boost pedal and the front of the amp. I'm just getting concerned I'm losing some toneor cutting off sustain at some point. Still trying to work it all out and find a perminent solution. rager005
Thx for the answers. I only have humbucker guitars. The problem in my case are probably the power outlets and general wiring, as I tested today. When I moved around in the room and get closer to a outlet it gets a lot worse. At certain positions and angels it isn't even noticeable. I guess it's due to us having an older house. Are there any pedals or devices which could help with that? I looked at the Sentry Gate from TC Electronics which lets you set the frequencies you want to filter out.

Is the noise there when your guitar is not plugged in? If it is only when the guitar is plugged in, I don't think a power conditioner is going to help. It hasnt helped me anyway and it sounds like we have very similar problems
rager005
Yeah it sounds pretty similar. It's dead silence when the guitar is not plugged in. In my case its interference from the old wiring inside the walls, as I plugged everything out in the room except the Helix and listend with my passiv headphones while walking around in the room. The sound got stronger when going up to walls and especially outlets. As it's not planned to redo the wiring anytime soon, I thought of getting one of those "Hum blockers". But I need to do more research on those, because for example the one you used didn't have an effect.

Definitely seems to be something in the air being picked up as it changes when you move around, just haven't figured it out yet Definitely let me know if anything helps and I will do the same. The only hum blocker I tried so far was the EBTech Hum Eliminator but it unfortunately did not work.

I recently went through this same experience and the thing that minimized it the most, to acceptable levels, was turning off c-states and speedstep in the computer's bios. Can't recall, but there were also some other obscure settings I changed that might have made a very small difference. The unwanted noise is still there, but I have to move the guitar to within ~30cm of the computer to really notice it anymore. Before I could be a couple meters away before it started to disappear. It's amazing how much stuff emits radiation that the guitar pickups pickup. Some things can even be picked up by the unplugged end of the guitar cable. But most things have to be about 10cm from the pickups though. From a laser mouse, backlit keyboard, monitor, helix itself and it's screen and scribble strips, power outlets, routers, etc. And each thing has it's own audio characteristics, in particular the mouse and keyboard. schapman1022
@rager005 Any luck on your end? I've just found on my end that I was able to cut down a lot of the noise with having the HVAC off and also anything like a dishwasher, washer/dryer...anything really with a motor in it
