HX Edit Won't Run - even 2.81

I'm curious if anyone else is having the issue I'm having.

Win10 PC, used HX Edit 2.7 and other Line 6 products for years, no problem.  With the 2.8 (and 2.81) HX Edit, the installation runs fine.  But when I try to open HX Edit, the screen isn't normal/black - the application screen is actually a "grab" of my desktop or whatever is open on my desktop when HX Edit runs (like a browser page, desktop with file folders, Word file open).  The menus for HX Edit work - but if I select something like Preferences, the app crashes.  This is all without connecting my Helix.  If I connect the Helix, it crashes without me doing anything.  See attached image to show what I see.

My Helix is connected using the driver just fine - I can play through my computer, use the Helix as a sound card/source - all like I have before.  I've installed HX Edit on a laptop and it works fine - that's my solution for now, but it's frustrating I can't get it to work on my desktop.  My Helix updated to 2.8, and 2.81 without any issues.

I'm a PC geek - I've tried everything - uninstall, reinstall, turning off virus software (laptop uses the same software and no issues there), minimal Win10 start to rule out a startup app conflict.  I've submitted a support ticket, Line 6 says the issue will be addressed in a future update (apparently not 2.81 since I had no success installing that).

Clearly, something on my desktop Win10 PC is a conflict - if anyone has figured out what the conflict might be, let me know.  I'm on the latest version of Win10, 1903.

Hi spenserj87,

I’m not sure if this ties in with your situation regarding HX Edit, but there has been some other variations of the “blank screen” thing on Native. You may want to try filling this thread to see if there is anything that turns up that may help you. The only thing that I managed to find by trawling the web was that it’s a Windows thing - YMMV.

In fact this is the quote I found.

Known graphics card issue, update drivers and reinstall .NET framework”

Check this thread for more.

Why am I seeing so many "Windows 10" and Helix issues?

Broken Windows got to be down to Helix and Line 6 - or at least what the users will be thinking.

Couldn’t possibly be anything else - right?

I mean it worked perfectly well before those Line 6 monkeys screwed everything up.

Round up the usual suspects.

Why do they have to keep giving us free stuff?

When can we expect v3.0 and what will be in it?

What do you want from life...

a Winnebago--Hell, a herd of Winnebago's we're giving 'em away

or how about a McCulloch chainsaw,
a Las Vegas wedding,
a Mexican divorce,
a solid gold Kama Sutra coffee pot,
or a baby's arm holding an apple?

Oh, damn - done that one before - this stuff just goes round and round and round and round and ad infinitum.

Sorry, I'm running a Mac and so far its been pretty smooth, but I have seen mucho Windows 10 issues with Helix as of late.

Don't mean that as a slam on Win OS, just what I've observed. I too have a gaming PC and luv it ; )

I’m with you there Spikey. I’m also a Mac Pilot and have been since the Mac Plus arrived, but my colleague specialises in building custom PCs mostly for music, graphics/video editing and also deals with web hosting, so he deals with all that Linux, Ubuntu and whatnot. It’s all too arcane for my sensibilities. The only time I was ever tempted to acquire a Windows machine was to use it as a dedicated render engine for my 3D graphic stuff.

Note: I mentioned this Windows thing to him and it says that it’s not his problem. No such thing as free advice from him - he charges for that, it’s a business thing.

Ya, I’ve noticed that too.  I’m also a Mac user and haven’t had any troubles at all with upgrading nor can I recall hearing of any other Mac users having problems. Could it be that most “bugs” are actually Windows problems?

Like you, I’m not trying to put Windows down ... I write multiplatform programs and have a Windows machine in my arsenal. Don’t used it for much else though.

This may or may not help you but sometimes USB ports can be finicky, even though the drivers are updated. I've run into it with other devices, not with the Helix (yet!). One thing I did notice with 2.8 was that after a period of time HX Edit would lose connection to my Floor. I rearranged my officer and wound up redoing all the cabling to my PC, including the USB cord to my Helix. I moved it to a new USB port, coincidentally going from a 2.0 port to a 3.0 port. I haven't had any issues since I recabled everything including so far with 2.81. I'm not saying this is the fix but it may be worth a shot to try another USB port.

Good advice. A large number of upgrade problems (other than not following instructions or not starting by backing up and downloading HX Edit) seem to be related to Windows losing USB connectivity with the HX device. That is why so many people have been able to resume the firmware upgrade simply by swapping out their USB cable, trying other USB connections, or simply rebooting their PC.

I’m hoping Line 6 knows the issue and it’s just taking time to fix.  They haven’t engaged with me at all other than to ask what version of Win10 I’m using (the latest).  I would have thought they would engage to find out what the common configuration is for those of us having issues.

There is a lot of this about, but see if this guy's configuration is anything like yours.

I’m with “Spikey” on this one - let’s start narrowing it down.

”spenserj87” and “naturian” both are using Windows 10 desktop machines with issues - yet both parties can run the same software on laptop machines without any problems.

Any clues there?

Mmm...?

I'm gonna post my full system specs for you:

-Windows 10 Pro with 1903 May Update

-MSI Z370 M5 Gaming

-i5 8600K

-Palit GTX 1080

-4x8GB samsung m378a1k43cb2-crc (overclocked to 3200 MHz)

-system drive: Samsung 840 series 250GB

-sound card: Yamaha AG06

any further specs you need? I already did: Windows repair/upgrade installation, deleting, (re-,de-)installing Helix, de- and reactivated .NET Framwork 3.5 and 4.7, de- and reinstalled sound and graphics drivers, restarting in safe mode, adding another user account/activating administrator account, deleting all line6 files from the pc.

I simply can overwrite 1.81/2.81 with the 1.70/2.70 and both (native and hx edit) start immediately.

It's certainly not a great solution, but if everything works perfectly by using 1.70/2.70 versions you can continue to work with that until the issue is fixed.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread.  I've updated my graphics drivers, reinstalled .NET framework.  Still not working.

I would be curious if you uninstalled your graphics card driver if HX Edit would come up normally. Btw, it has been exceptionally rare but I do remember seeing one fellow a while back who had to either uninstall or update some of the drivers that came with his motherboard. This was a very specific case only impacting his hardware configuration but I believe he was also using a gaming PC. You might want to see if there are updated versions of your MOBO drivers that might help

I don't have much time to chase this down.  The latest response to my tech support ticket is that Line 6 will resolve in a forthcoming update.  No ETA.

My specs, for what it is worth.

-Windows 10 Pro with 1903 May Update

-ASRock Z97E-ITX

-i5 4690

-Sapphire Radeon R9 270

-2x8GB G.Skill Sniper DDR3 1866

-Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD x 2, additional 4gb hard drive

-sound: Realtek HD (motherboard), LG Ultra HD (AMD HD Audio)

-Presonus AudioBox 22VSL

-Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse

-Two monitor setup (LG and Dell)

Nothing else special, old but solid system.

I get it, I guess one alternative is to load and run HX Edit 2.81 on another computer until there is a fix out. I will say one benefit of updating your MOBO drivers is you may get better general performance in all your apps as well as possibly getting HX Edit 2.81 to work. 'Course, there is always the chance you make things worse :-)  A Line6 fix could come out tomorrow or be a long time coming, especially if it turns out it is a problem with the AsRock's MOBO drivers . As they stated "No ETA".  Good luck with this!

Crazy, 2.82 still doesn't resolve this.  Ugh.  Why is a product running on Win10 so hard to fix.  It doesn't run.

When it gets to this state of affairs, I would begin to suspect that this issue is more to do with how your PC and Windows 10 are configured. As you have noted, it functions perfectly on your laptop.

There has been many complaints about the Firmware 2.80 and the changes to the Helix Core operating system, but if this issue occurred with every machine running Windows 10 then Line 6 would be under siege from disgruntled Windows users.

Therefore, I think the answer to your question, “Why is a product running on Win10 so hard to fix?” is possibly due to the fact that there are so many variables with how the basic PC can be modified and configured. You may want to check that first, rather than blame the firmware, but as you also mention, you are “not motivated to spend time on the desktop”. Well, there you have it.

It’s not the firmware, it’s HX Edit (doesn’t involve anything being hooked up to USB). Line 6 has recognized there is an issue, nothing special about my Win10 ecosystem. I mean there must be something different, but I’ve done all the normal steps and troubleshooting to look for conflicts. I’m not a PC novice. I can certainly wipe the PC and do a fresh install, but that’s not the point.

I’ve run Line 6 software for years on this PC.  I’m not running anything on this PC that wouldn’t be common for any recording musician. I’ve disconnected all USB devices. No development apps, nothing pirated, no overclocked hardware, all mainstream PC hardware. It’s silly not to blame Line 6 as it’s their responsibility to ensure their software runs on Win10 machines. At some point they will come out with a fix, proving my point. Or it’s an MS issue.  I’m not the only one having this issue, even if it is a small group.

The good news is that I’ve gotten so much better at using, adjusting, arranging, and manipulating the Helix without HX Edit.

Hi,

Glad to hear that you are getting to grips with flying your Helix, but I feel I have to point out that you have raised your point about the issues you are having by posting in two separate threads. Consequently and FYI any replies with suggestions to help you are becoming “cross-threaded.

This has been a Public Service Announcement ;-)

Just adding an update.  For other reasons, I ended up doing a fresh install of Win10 on my PC.  Fresh install, Windows Update to make sure I had all the latest updates and drivers.  I used the MS drivers for my AMD Radeon R9 Graphics card.  Installed HX Edit.  Same issue.  Installed the AMD Catalyst drivers, latest stable drivers (since has been updated twice).  Same issue.  So I've at least removed any doubt that it was a software or hardware conflict for peripherals.  My system is a basic i5 intel system, no overclocking.  I was convinced it would work with a fresh install.  I've even run my system off the Intel integrated graphics, single monitor, HX Edit still does the same thing.  Very odd.

HX Edit has such a dated feel to it - probably a resolution issue as it just doesn't look sharp even on my laptop.  But I've tried other resolutions on my desktop, no change.  Never an issue till 2.8, no issues on my laptop.  Hopefully Line6 gets around to fixing soon and doesn't make us wait till 2.9, or worse, 3.0.

This is not because I run Line-6 stuff on a Mac, but Ive noticed "MANY" people here saying they use Windows 10 and are having issues with the later Helix update/Editor software. Im not including those that cant or wont follow installation instructions either. There seems to be something in the Line-6 software, and/or Windows 10 that just doesn't seem to get along with each other. And yet, there are some that run this same setup with no issues???

So is everyone who is having an issue, happen to be running with the same motherboard, or graphics card? And is it something like this specific hardware or software on the PC that Line-6 software has problems with I wonder? Some weird driver for IO/USB causing this?

Same issue as Spenserj87. Today, Helix 2.81 doesn't recognize my Helix LT so I get a black screen.

No issues running 2.81 on my Window 10 1809 system.  Has worked well with no trouble, even after the Windows USB driver update last April, which stopped Native Instruments USB devices from being seen by my DAW.

- Windows device manager has no errors and all supplied Helix services report working fine, i.e. audio interface In/Out, Line 6/Helix LT device.

- Installed Helix Edit 2.82. No change.

- I have a Win 10 1803 laptop with works fine. I updated the Helix firmware to 2.82 and Helix Edit works correctly.

BUT... yesterday I updated to Windows 10 1903.  It's been out a few months and many of the software vendors have supplied updates since, so I thought it was safe.  Now I Helix Edit won't connect to my LT. Line 6 Updater doesn't see it either. Seems like a Windows 1903 update must require USB drivers to behave differently. I say that because I had to re-install a USB driver for my Steinberg audio interface. So I reinstalled the USB drivers for the Helix but no luck.

Really frustrating when you think you're going to spend a happy afternoon playing music and end up troubleshooting Windows problem.  Unfortunately, it's a game that MS makes hardware vendors play to update their drivers constantly but I'm disappointed that Line6 isn't on top of this. 1903 has been out for several months. Yamaha has tons of USB devices and deals with this issue all the time.  You'd think they could share USB driver code best practice so all their product lines stay current.

Line 6 support is terrible. Tried to be helpful by providing details and now am on Response 3 to answer questions that I explained when I opened the ticket. Latest theory is a bad USB cable. They won't even answer a simple question like: "Can you verify that Helix Edit app and drivers run on a Win 10 1903 system?" I am so lollipoping done with Line 6.

I can verify that. I am running HX Edit v2.82 on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit version 1903, Build 18362.476. I am using the Line 6 drivers that were installed with the HX Edit v2.82 package. I am not experiencing any issues.

I can verify that too. Windows 10 Pro 64-bit version 1909 (befor that 1903) and no issues.

Sometimes it can happen, that this Windows update overwrites some drivers

If you have driver issues I would try this:

Unplug the the Helix and uninstall all line6 software (HX Edit, drivers, updater). Reboot the pc.

Then install HX Edit (2.82) again - When you get to the options section of the install, leave them all checked.

(All you need is included in this package)
